00:00Another generation losing another brilliant young comedian.
00:09Today in Chicago there are tears over the death of Chris Farley.
00:12Farley's brother found the 33-year-old comedian dead on the floor.
00:17Chris Farley was the irreverent comedic genius who rose to fame on Saturday Night Live.
00:23What?
00:24Everyone loved Chris.
00:26As soon as he opened his mouth, the audience started laughing.
00:28David, you are terrible.
00:31His relationship with the audience was pure love. They laughed at him like crazy.
00:36His unique blend of no-holds-barred slapstick and vulnerability has captured the hearts of millions.
00:42Okay. Enough jokes.
00:45He had that sweet puppy face that attracted people.
00:49Yeah, man.
00:49But on December 18, 1997, Chris's body was found on the floor of his Chicago apartment.
01:00He died alone at the age of 33.
01:04The cause of Farley's death is still unknown.
01:06An autopsy should provide answers tomorrow.
01:09Chris Farley was the kind of person who could liven up any party.
01:14And his wild lifestyle was known.
01:18But did he die prematurely simply because he couldn't stop?
01:23Or is there a darker medical side that drove Chris to excess?
01:28Dr. Michael Hunter is a renowned forensic pathologist.
01:41He has already performed more than 4,000 autopsies to investigate and reveal the cause of death.
01:49Today he is the chief coroner of one of the largest cities in the United States.
01:58This is Chris Farley's autopsy report.
02:00And I'm going to use it to try to figure out why an extremely popular artist ended up dying alone and at such a young age.
02:14Sunday, December 14, 1997, Chicago.
02:20Four days before death.
02:21Chris?
02:22Comedian Chris Farley is at his local church.
02:26He is a devout Catholic who goes to Mass and confession weekly.
02:31In Hollywood, the 33-year-old bachelor is on the rise.
02:35With his last film, Beverly Hills Ninja, he earned 6 million dollars.
02:42But he's eager to swap popular comedies for more challenging roles.
02:47And I know God is there, but...
02:48He was cast in a David Mamet film about Ferry Arbuckle, which was going to be a very serious film.
02:54And he really wanted to play that role.
02:56I wanted to show the world that I had this other side.
03:00The role had the potential to redefine Chris's career, but it would require a new level of discipline.
03:06Hours after leaving church, Chris heads to a downtown bar to celebrate Christmas with friends and family.
03:21It's awesome, man.
03:23Without any serious relationships, he makes the most of his life as a Hollywood star.
03:29Man, I love you guys. I'm serious.
03:31I love you, man.
03:32And I love you too.
03:33Chris would walk into the bar where I worked, and then people would come after him.
03:38Anyone on the street was attracted to him.
03:41The energy level of the place rose considerably when he walked through the door.
03:47Let's drink!
03:48Let's go!
03:49Let's show him!
03:50Chris is a beloved local celebrity.
03:53And there's no shortage of fans wanting to shake his hand and buy him a beer.
03:57Do you remember that, man? Do you remember that?
03:59But in four days he will be dead.
04:03The first thing I notice when looking at Chris's autopsy report is his weight.
04:09When he died, he weighed 300 pounds.
04:12And he was only 1.72 meters tall.
04:15This gives a body mass index of 44.9.
04:19He was morbidly obese.
04:21Chris Farley was born in 1964 into a large Catholic family in Madison, Wisconsin.
04:32Your weight has been a problem since childhood.
04:35But he soon finds a way to turn it to his advantage.
04:38He learned early on that if he took a shine to himself before anyone else did, no one would pick on him.
04:47He literally made the jokes before others had the chance.
04:50Chris idolizes his own father.
04:55And from an early age, he and his four brothers constantly compete for her attention.
05:01His father was an imposing figure.
05:04And Chris, in a family of great comedians, was the best at making him laugh.
05:09So he soon discovered that making his father laugh was by far the best feeling in the world.
05:19It's a feeling you look for on stage.
05:22In his early 20s, he is living in Chicago and building a career in improv comedy with the famous Second City theater troupe.
05:32In improv comedy, I take what you give me and add something to it.
05:36I add more seasoning to the sauce.
05:38And Chris was the best of them all.
05:40He would take something that was already good and send it into the stratosphere.
05:43Now, tell me something.
05:46I liked him right away because he listened to me.
05:49And he admired me.
05:50He said, you are a very funny guy, uncle.
05:53And I respect your timing.
05:56Chris looks to other burly comedians for inspiration.
06:00John Candy, John Goodman, most of all, John Beluche.
06:05He idolized him, wore his clothes backstage, imitated his mannerisms, he glued his eyelids with duct tape to look like John Beluche.
06:15And he decided he was going to be the new John Beluche.
06:17But Chris soon makes his own mark on the comedy circuit as Second City's most promising young talent.
06:27With his aggressive stage presence, audiences come to his shows just to see what he is capable of.
06:33Chris had no limits.
06:37He took off his clothes, lowered his pants.
06:39He literally did everything he was challenged to do.
06:47Looking at the external examination of Chris's body, the next thing I notice is a series of bruises around his left eye and on his buttocks.
06:55Are we going to be friends or are we going to fight all night?
06:59Despite his size, Chris is an extremely athletic man, known for his stage antics and absurd ideas.
07:07Yeah, you and me!
07:09It was like a hurricane entering the room.
07:12He decided to dive in right away.
07:16So all you saw was this huge guy flying out of the wings, falling hard to the ground and getting up and saying...
07:25Sorry, sorry, I'm late.
07:30My stud!
07:32He would fall to the ground, he would roll, he would punch others just to be funny.
07:38So when he took his shirt off, he was all purple because, you know, he was the padding.
07:46He didn't wear any protection.
07:49Chris' most famous character, the annoying, clumsy, and incompetent motivational speaker Matt Foley,
07:56was the perfect vehicle for his no-holds-barred slapstick.
07:59I think it's very likely that these bruises are the result of Chris's performance or perhaps a simple fall.
08:13There is nothing here that would suggest a crime.
08:16These injuries are minimal and did not contribute to his death.
08:19What the autopsy makes very clear is that Chris was as irresponsible with the inside of his body as he was with the outside.
08:31Sunday, December 14, 1997.
08:35Three and a half days before his death, Chris is having dinner and drinks at the Cheesecake Factory restaurant in Chicago.
08:42As we know, Chris's weight was not at all healthy and this could cause a series of health problems.
08:54And the most obvious of these would be diabetes.
08:57This is annoying.
08:59It can be a fatal disease, causing a heart attack, stroke or kidney failure.
09:03Then you do it like this, look, you put the sauce.
09:06We would go out to dinner and I would ask for a starter and a margarita.
09:13He immediately ordered two dishes and two margaritas.
09:16And then I would order two more margaritas.
09:19Whatever you ate or drank, he asked for in much larger quantities.
09:23This is Scocci cheese, man.
09:27Chris was known among his friends for his ritual of ordering double the amount of any dish.
09:33It's a six bedroom apartment, man.
09:35The autopsy report does not make it clear whether Chris had diabetes.
09:39But you can see from the glucose level that he was not hyperglycemic at the time of death.
09:44So even if he had diabetes, it didn't kill him.
09:49Even so, the strange habit of eating double of everything indicates a propensity for compulsion and addiction.
09:57The more exaggerated, the better.
10:00Exaggerated and better.
10:01Come here, talk to us here.
10:02But his volatile personality is a double-edged sword.
10:09After performing a striptease on Saturday Night Live with Patrick Swayze, he becomes a household name.
10:15But fame comes at a price.
10:19I said, did you feel bad when they laughed at you in that painting?
10:24He thought and said, I became a guard.
10:27I stayed.
10:29But you know, that's what they wanted me to do.
10:31So I did.
10:32His motto was, the fat man falls to the ground.
10:36He knew he was stereotyped and I think he saw it as a burden.
10:40A sad burden, like, this is what people expect of me.
10:43I have to be a clown.
10:45Then after the treadmill I'll go.
10:46But playing the fat clown is what makes him rich and famous.
10:53Then a conflict arises.
10:55I know that being overweight and drinking so much and eating so much is not good for me.
11:00But what if I'm not the funny fat guy?
11:02Who am I?
11:04Serious?
11:05We have evidence of Chris's distress and depression in the toxicology portion of the autopsy report.
11:16They found traces of fluoxetine, a type of antidepressant, in his blood and liver.
11:23It is a very strong medicine, used in the treatment of various psychological problems, including major depressive disorder.
11:35Did the medicine play a role in his death?
11:39Or does his presence just indicate that there were bigger demons in his life?
11:45The drug is used to treat depression, but also to treat obsessive compulsive disorder.
11:53He would come walking down the hall and he would touch his coat, lick something, smell something, touch a step, go up a step, go down again.
12:06It was a quirk of Chris's.
12:08He licked and touched things and everyone accepted it, as if it were an eccentricity of that crazy giant.
12:15OCD, obsessive compulsive disorder, is an anxiety disorder that generates intrusive thoughts, obsessive thoughts.
12:24The person keeps mulling things over without stopping.
12:27The thought might be, something bad will happen unless I turn the light on and off.
12:31And it's usually very ritualized, it's turning it on and off a number or couple of times.
12:36In Chris's case, the obsessive thoughts were related to his profession.
12:43It seems that the compulsion increased before a performance, so he began to touch certain objects before going on stage,
12:51licking certain objects, according to some reports.
12:55And then he felt good, that everything was going to go well in the presentation.
12:58Now that I've done all this, everything will be fine.
13:01What is it? It's a carpet for a bunch of cameras.
13:06Antidepressants stimulate the production of substances in the brain that control mood,
13:11relieving the feeling of anxiety that OCD causes.
13:16Compulsive habits such as licking and touching things, and always ordering double the same dish,
13:21may seem like harmless eccentricities.
13:24But OCD is often associated with much more dangerous compulsions.
13:30The autopsy report shows that Chris had high levels of fat in his liver,
13:38which may indicate a drinking problem.
13:42The liver's job is to filter harmful substances from the blood, such as alcohol.
13:47Excessive alcohol consumption damages liver cells and reduces the organ's ability to process fat,
13:56resulting in a build-up of fat that can cause kidney failure and, as a consequence, death.
14:04Could Chris's liver have been so damaged that it played a role in his untimely death?
14:09December 15, 1997, 1 a.m., three days before his death.
14:18Chris is drinking in downtown Chicago.
14:23There was a line of people following Chris, and even the people who were already at the bar were surrounding him as if he were some kind of magnet.
14:32And you could see that he was already quite upset about that thing.
14:35Chris had been drinking heavily since his college days.
14:40And by 1997, his drinking binges were legendary.
14:45Chris loved alcohol.
14:48And he drank with gusto, the drink running down his face.
14:53And I said, Chris, nobody's going to take your bottle.
14:57When the bars closed at three in the morning, the normal customers thought,
15:00Okay, that's enough.
15:01But no, Chris.
15:02For him, the party was just beginning and there was no off button.
15:08And according to eyewitnesses, December 15, 1997 is no different.
15:15Chris continues drinking until nine in the morning.
15:18The autopsy report indicates that Chris's alcohol abuse had caused a fatty liver.
15:34But he appeared to be functioning normally as there was no evidence of cirrhosis.
15:38December 15, 1997.
15:46After a night of bar hopping and drinking heavily, Chris recovers at home.
15:52Your friend Tino Malley is going to visit you.
15:54He was crying.
15:56I said, what's wrong?
15:57He said, David Mamet wrote a movie about Ferry Arbuckle and he offered me the role.
16:02Then people will take me seriously, you know?
16:04That is great.
16:05It's important to me, it's a tragic story.
16:08I won't be the clown anymore, I'll be able to play a dramatic role.
16:13You have to take care of yourself first, okay?
16:15While Chris may seem like the perfect choice to play silent film star Ferry Arbuckle, his lifestyle is anything but perfect.
16:24It's different for you, you can do it, but I...
16:26He said, the only condition is that I stay sober for two years before filming.
16:31That was his fear.
16:32He said, I can't, I can't stay sober for two years.
16:36Chris has tried to kick his addictions many times, but his relationship with rehab has never been easy.
16:46Chris has undergone 17 rehabilitations throughout his life, with varying levels of difficulty.
16:53Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't, but he took it as a break.
16:57It was something he did to make ends meet.
16:59Chris's habits are influenced by his equally obese father.
17:08Chris adores his father and always seeks his approval, even telling friends that he was still overweight to please him.
17:16And Tom Farley, Sr., despises rehab.
17:21Chris had a famous story about when he and his father went to a spa.
17:25At group therapy time, his father looked at Chris and said,
17:29Let's go.
17:31And they went and stuffed themselves.
17:32They went on vacation.
17:34Yeah, that gives you a good idea of how his father viewed rehabilitation.
17:39Chris has a dilemma ahead of him.
17:41Does he need to stop drinking or will this be the end of his dream of a career as a serious actor?
17:47From the autopsy report, I don't see any sign that Chris was taking it easy.
17:52And it seems to me that his much-loved father may have unwittingly played a crucial role in the development of certain addictions.
18:02But the results of the toxicology report are a big surprise.
18:06There was no alcohol in his system when he died.
18:12This indicates that he had stopped drinking and had a chance to metabolize all the alcohol.
18:17But the toxicology report shows he had used illicit drugs.
18:25Small amounts of THC, or tetrahydrocannabinol, have been found in the urine.
18:30And this is the active component of cannabis.
18:33December 16, 1997, 8:25 am, a day and a half before death.
18:43Chris is in his apartment, drinking vodka and smoking weed.
18:51So, are we going?
18:52Yeah, great.
18:53Despite being rich and famous, and surrounded by admirers, he regularly used escort services.
19:03When a woman was interested in Chris, he always thought, what did she see in this fat guy?
19:11Why does this beautiful woman want to be with me?
19:14He always questioned whether it was just the money, whether it was just the fame.
19:18With the prostitutes, at least the agreement was clear.
19:20And he didn't have to think about it.
19:24But according to the prostitute, Chris doesn't want to have sex.
19:28And he seems interested only in your company.
19:31He is downcast and agitated.
19:35The effects of cannabis on the brain are hotly debated.
19:39But combining alcohol with cannabis can increase feelings of anxiety and depression.
19:45The autopsy report shows a very low concentration.
19:49So this did not contribute to his death in any way.
19:52But his reckless behavior suggests a mental condition that may have led him down a self-destructive path.
19:59It was very clear to people that he had psychological problems.
20:09I suggested that maybe he should talk to someone and he said...
20:13No, I'm Catholic.
20:15I speak to the priest twice a week.
20:17So I don't need anything like that.
20:19He said that confession and the priest spoke...
20:27You are acquitted.
20:28And I said...
20:29Chris, when you get acquitted, it's not about the drinking and the drugs.
20:35He's not saying you can go out and drink again.
20:38And you have to understand that.
20:41You have sinned.
20:41I used illegal drugs...
20:43It appears that Chris was not receiving adequate treatment for his psychological problems or his various addictions.
20:51If his depression had been getting worse in those last few days...
20:54I wonder if he wasn't using even stronger drugs to keep going.
20:59December seventeenth, nineteen ninety-seven.
21:05The night before his death.
21:08Chris is drunk and upset.
21:11He calls his friend Tino Manley.
21:14I didn't know where he was, how much he was suffering or what he was thinking and I didn't...
21:20How much pain he was in.
21:22We could go to the bar, man.
21:24I'm in need...
21:25I just knew he was crying and begging and I said...
21:28I'll see you at ten tomorrow.
21:31And try not to call anyone.
21:32I missed the stage.
21:33I spoke...
21:33We're not going to a bar, Chris.
21:35I said we'll see each other tomorrow at the meeting.
21:39Tim convinces Chris to join an alcoholic recovery group the next day.
21:45You will be able to get back on track and live.
21:49Because I knew it was a matter of life or death at that point.
21:52I'll see you tomorrow.
21:54The two friends will never speak to each other again.
21:58Two in the morning.
22:09Chris goes out drinking for the fourth night in a row.
22:15He is drunk and hyperactive and witnesses describe him as altered.
22:21He was driving around Chicago.
22:23He dated people he probably wouldn't have dated under other circumstances.
22:28The close friends and relatives he hung out with earlier this week are tired of his excesses.
22:34People said the first hour with Chris Farley was the best hour of their lives.
22:40The second hour was pretty cool.
22:43The third hour was hell.
22:44But a Hollywood star with a reputation for partying is unlikely to drink alone.
22:53People who wanted to be his friend or act like friends would go out drinking with him thinking it was always a party with Chris Farley.
23:03That's how he'd end up in a stranger's apartment somewhere or taking a limo to a strip club or whatever.
23:18Three thirty in the morning.
23:21Chris's party continues at a luxury apartment in Lincoln Park.
23:26And there is no shortage of drugs.
23:28According to the coroner's report, the Chicago Police Department found a small package of what appeared to be drugs under Chris' body.
23:38And the toxicology report shows the presence of cocaine, both in his blood and in his stomach contents.
23:47After several hours of snorting cocaine, Chris is approached by prostitute Heidi Houser.
23:53According to Reis, Chris jokes about his appetite for drugs, saying he loves cocaine.
24:04When it comes to drugs, cocaine is one of the most unpredictable and dangerous substances in the world.
24:12And its presence in the autopsy report is very significant.
24:16But I found another interesting piece of evidence.
24:22Chris Farley's heart weighed 533 grams.
24:26This is almost twice the normal size of a heart.
24:31Cocaine stimulates the heart, causing it to beat faster while also constricting the capillaries and reducing blood flow.
24:40The stress on the heart increases as it has to work harder.
24:45Over time it gets bigger but less efficient.
24:51The fact that Chris has an enlarged heart may be evidence of prolonged cocaine use.
25:00Chris's relationship with cocaine dates back to his days in improv comedy,
25:05when excessive consumption caused concern.
25:10He was in the dressing room, inside a bathroom, and he was drinking a gallon of wine and snorting a gram of cocaine.
25:23And I told him, Chris, you can't do that.
25:26And he told me, I can't stop.
25:30At some point in Chris's career, alcohol and drugs stopped being recreational.
25:36and became the fuel that fueled his comedy.
25:40He believed he was better when he was on drugs.
25:47Most deaths caused by cocaine are related to the heart.
25:51And examining the condition of Chris's heart, I discovered something really shocking.
25:57He had severe coronary artery sclerosis, or coronary artery disease.
26:05Coronary artery disease is the leading cause of death in the United States.
26:11It occurs when cholesterol builds up in the artery walls and the body attacks the area with white blood cells.
26:17Over time, this process causes plaques to build up and thicken the artery walls, restricting blood flow.
26:27But when the plaque ruptures, it can cause a blockage, leading to a heart attack.
26:34Christian has up to 90% blockage in his coronary arteries.
26:38And that's incredible for a 33-year-old.
26:41He was a walking time bomb.
26:43He could drop dead of a heart attack at any moment.
26:47In his final appearance on Saturday Night Live, Chris's health issues become clear to his colleagues.
26:56They left the oxygen cylinders out of the camera's field of view,
27:02because he was so out of breath that no one knew if he would make it to the end of the program.
27:09And you could see he was in terrible shape.
27:13And it broke my heart.
27:17Severely damaged coronary arteries and constant cocaine use are a catastrophic combination.
27:23But I saw something else in the autopsy report that intrigued me.
27:29They tested for the presence of gamma hydroxybutyric acid in the blood, better known as GHB or liquid ecstasy.
27:36GHB became a popular drug in the 1990s.
27:42It is a muscle relaxant that reduces heart rate and gives users a feeling similar to being drunk.
27:50But an overdose can lead to fainting and respiratory failure.
27:55According to reports, there was GHB at Chris's last party.
27:59The fact that they tested for GHB leads me to believe that a cocaine-induced heart attack doesn't tell the whole story.
28:14I suspect that darker forces than just cocaine led to Chris's death.
28:20December 17, 1997, two-thirty in the afternoon, the day before Chris died.
28:31After a morning of drinking and snorting cocaine at a downtown party, Chris finds himself at the apartment of prostitute Heidi Hauser.
28:40And he doesn't seem to want the party to end.
28:45He calls a drug dealer.
28:47Even the addicts around him said he was one of the worst addicts they had ever seen.
28:53He was more than addicted.
28:55He had a level of dependence and obsession and compulsion that was beyond the most serious addiction.
29:03Continuing to read the toxicology report, I can see that the GHB test came back negative.
29:09I can already rule it out as a possible cause of death,
29:11but this raises the possibility that there are other drugs involved besides cannabis and cocaine.
29:19With the help of the autopsy report, I am getting closer to the truth.
29:25Dude, that's it.
29:28Chris buys a thousand dollars worth of drugs, including crack cocaine.
29:33Always a pleasure doing business with you, man.
29:35Crack is just another means of consuming cocaine.
29:38Instead of snorting a powder, the user smokes a rock or crystal that causes a feeling of intense euphoria.
29:45But the euphoria doesn't last long, so the desire to get more increases.
30:09Throughout the afternoon, Hyde and Chris continue to have fun.
30:13These photos are among the last taken of Chris alive.
30:19In this one, he is surrounded by objects for drug consumption.
30:23Looking at the latest photos of him with Hyde Hauser, he looks resigned.
30:29There are lines of drugs on the table and his eyes look weird.
30:33He doesn't look like someone with life in his eyes anymore.
30:35He looks like a defeated person.
30:38Around 8:45 pm, Chris orders a limo.
30:43Oh, I wish...
31:13Goodbye.
31:14Goodbye.
