This documentary explores why some parents resort to feeding their babies fast food. It follows three families as they desperately try and get back on the right nutritional track.

Junk food addiction is dropping alarmingly down the age ladder, and we are now rearing a generation of fast food babies. This film reveals babies and toddlers eating a diet of chips, burgers and kebabs, all washed down with bottles of fizzy drinks.

00:00Fast food is everywhere.
00:07He likes KFC, chicken nuggets, kebabs, fish and chips.
00:13Anything that's bad for you, he'll eat.
00:16Our kids just can't get enough of it.
00:20He does love fizzy pop.
00:23A lot of cans, probably on average say six throughout the day.
00:27I got no control of what he eats.
00:29And now we're rearing a nation of fast food babies.
00:34Banana!
00:35I see tooth decay, iron deficiency anemia, rickets even.
00:41It's a ticking time bomb of massive health problems.
00:47They are a recipe for heart disease, diabetes.
00:52We meet three families with three different fast food problems.
00:59A clan of takeaway addicts whose diet is shared by even their tiniest tot.
01:05Nice and still. Nice and still.
01:08A 19-month-old whose mum and dad are frightened by his refusal to eat healthy food.
01:14Michael.
01:15Eat.
01:16Michael.
01:17Michael.
01:18And a three-year-old whose mum has never cooked him a healthy meal.
01:27Can I have a small donut meat with chips, with cheese and mayonnaise please?
01:31All the families desperately want help.
01:34They're teaming up with experts to see if their babies can kick the habit.
01:40I just think maybe I just need to be reined back in and start from scratch with him.
01:46But if I've got an expert's help and I've got someone telling me what to do then I'll be able to change it.
01:5219-month-old Cuba Fish from Cardiff is a fast food baby.
02:14He likes McDonald's, he likes KFC, he likes Indian.
02:22He likes his pizzas, also his chips with plenty of salt, that's it.
02:26Cuba has one big problem.
02:29His whole family are takeaway addicts.
02:32Most people have a Friday night takeaway.
02:35But we have Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday night takeaway.
02:39How are you doing, buddy?
02:41You're welcome.
02:42They've been ordering for years actually.
02:46I'm very goofy.
02:49The takeaways are soaked in harmful saturated fat.
02:55Cuba's consuming half a litre of oil a week.
02:58So what do you have in there, Shay?
03:00I have some chicken, please.
03:04Construction assessor Simon could be a driving force behind this fast food feeding.
03:12Are we hungry still?
03:13Yes.
03:14Good.
03:15Guaranteed Friday and Saturday for me on the weekend, I'll take the kids, McDonald's.
03:21Simon's long working hours means he spoils Cuba rotten.
03:25It's hard to say no to him.
03:27You know, he's got a lovely, big, cute smile on him.
03:30It's hard.
03:31Because it's burning.
03:32You need some salsa.
03:33If Cuba's mum, Sam, does cook a home meal, the reception is lukewarm.
03:38Sam, your pasta is half cooked.
03:39Do you know what?
03:40Do you know when you buy pasta from a shop, right?
03:41Yeah.
03:42Do you know when you get those chilled ones?
03:43When you eat it, it's hard, isn't it?
03:44Yeah.
03:45Right there you are then.
03:46It's like shop bought pasta then.
03:47Nobody eats it and then they all run off and I'm left with just mess.
03:48Does anybody want this pasta?
03:49No.
03:50No.
03:51Sam works two days a week as a banking consultant.
03:53The other five are spent cleaning her home, meticulously.
04:00I just fed up a cleaning, so it means eating out about that and doing a lot of dishes.
04:01Brilliant.
04:02Cuba and sisters Cleo and Shae also have free reign to plunder the food.
04:03It's so nice.
04:04And it's really nice.
04:05It's so nice.
04:06I've got to do this.
04:07Yeah, I've got to do it.
04:08Yeah.
04:09It's really nice.
04:10I've got to do this.
04:11Do you want this pasta?
04:12No.
04:13No.
04:14Sam works two days a week as a banking consultant.
04:15The other five are spent cleaning her home, meticulously.
04:17I just fed up a cleaning, so that means eating out about that.
04:20And doing a lot of dishes, brilliant.
04:25Cuba and sisters Cleo and Shay also have free reign to plunder the sweetie cupboard.
04:33If I had to say a number, I would say at least 30 times throughout the day.
04:38He helps himself. I've got no control of what he eats.
04:41Whilst the girls have learnt self-control, Cuba hasn't.
04:50The toddler knocks all the fast food back with an unbelievable amount of cola.
04:56Up to six cans a day.
05:01It's out of control.
05:04Cuba can't sleep and Sam is now worried about his health.
05:08I'm totally conscious of it now.
05:09I just think maybe I just need to be reined back in and just start from scratch with him.
05:15I just don't know where to start, really, I think, with it.
05:18Sam is prepared for change.
05:21But is Simon?
05:23I'm not too sure about the fast food.
05:25I quite enjoy that.
05:26I think he enjoys that, so I wouldn't like to stop too much of that.
05:33The person responsible for sorting out family health in the local community is Jane Imperato.
05:38She's a hugely experienced family health visitor who spent 20 years coaxing families onto healthy diets.
05:47I think that I am reasonably firm.
05:49I think I'm a good parent to my parents.
05:53Hi there.
05:54Cuba has no choice in what he eats.
06:05To crack his problem, Jane will have to crack the whole family.
06:09Tell me all about what's been happening and what you feel your main issues are.
06:14Oh, we're just absolutely drained with him, to be honest with you, Jane.
06:17He's not eaten properly.
06:19I'm totally aware that he's not.
06:21How many takeaways do you have in a week?
06:23At least five.
06:24At least five.
06:26You don't know what's in those takeaways.
06:28And generally speaking, they're going to be high in fats and salt and sugar.
06:32And basically, they are a recipe for heart disease, diabetes, cancer.
06:43Okay.
06:43Okay.
06:44His diet at the moment, Sam.
06:46Is that bad?
06:47Worse than bad.
06:48It's dreadful.
06:48Oh, it's sick.
06:49It's really bad, yes.
06:50Cuba is consuming 3,200 calories a day, 700 more than is healthy for a grown man.
07:01There are long-term health risks, but in his short 19-month life, Cuba's diet may already
07:07be taking its toll.
07:09My main concern is that he might be anemic because he's not having an iron-rich diet.
07:15Right, okay.
07:17That's quite scary, really, isn't it?
07:18And it's been quite long-term this day, it's been as well, to be honest with you.
07:21How long has it been going on?
07:24For practically as long as he's been born.
07:28In the UK, one in eight toddlers are now iron-deficient.
07:32This can, in the worst cases, slow a child's development.
07:37Cuba will need a blood test to see if he's anemic.
07:41Right now, Jane lays down the ground rules for the whole family.
07:45We need to start cooking in this household.
07:47I want him on three meals a day.
07:49Sam, cooking?
07:50It's not all about me, no.
07:51It's not, no, it's not all about Sam.
07:53I need you to back Sam up.
07:55When you're looking after the children, I need you to cook for them.
07:59And maybe...
07:59Are you listening to this?
08:00Yes, you.
08:01Maybe give him during the week.
08:02You can cook, Sam.
08:03You can cook.
08:04It's just getting the time with yourself, obviously.
08:06Yeah.
08:06We have to see your time.
08:07Working from home.
08:07And were you saying that you didn't like the mess involved in cooking?
08:10Oh, the mess he makes, it's just irritating.
08:14I do have dishes and Sam's there behind me, cleaning everything up, saying, look at all the mess made.
08:18You see, the thing is, is that you've got to get your priorities straight.
08:22We need the mess, okay, unfortunately.
08:25Sorry about that, Sam.
08:26Oh, good.
08:27The sweetie cupboard, Simon, it has to be gone.
08:30Are you listening to this?
08:31No, I'm serious.
08:32We're really serious.
08:33Seriously, it has to go.
08:35So just by getting rid of that, it means that Cuba's going to have to forage for more...
08:40Stuff.
08:41Oh, I want to get his face.
08:43For more healthy food.
08:45You've got to be healthy.
08:46More bananas.
08:47See you.
08:48A shake.
08:49Losing the sweetie cupboard will be particularly tough for Cleo and Shae.
08:53Shae, come here, girls.
08:54I've got something to tell you.
08:56What we're going to do is, we're going to get rid of the sweetie cupboard.
09:01And you've got to be brave about this.
09:03It's not so much that you're the problem.
09:06The problem is your little brother.
09:08You've got to set him a good example.
09:10What do you think, Shae?
09:12No.
09:12What do you think, Cleo?
09:14No.
09:14Oh, well, okay.
09:15Sorry, girls, it's happening.
09:17Okay.
09:17The grown-ups are in charge.
09:20With me and Dad, he's taking control back.
09:22Yeah.
09:23Yeah, Shae?
09:24What are you doing?
09:25Oh, I want me to be a girl.
09:31Oh, dear.
09:33Come on, Shae.
09:34He's quite a shock.
09:35Okay, don't let her pull on the old heartstrings.
09:37We're not being mean.
09:38We're being cruel to be kind.
09:41Okay.
09:42All right, Shae?
09:43Yeah.
09:43For the sake of your little brother, really.
09:44Because he is completely out of control.
09:46I've never come across a single family before
09:51that actually just lived on takeaway food
09:55and just did no cooking whatsoever.
09:57It's to an extreme.
10:00It really is.
10:01Jane allows just one takeaway a week as motivation.
10:06Their diet's been turned on its head.
10:09It's all easy to agree.
10:11We cook every night.
10:12We're making plans.
10:13It sounds really good and I want to do it.
10:15And I don't like it.
10:20Yeah, we feel really, really sad.
10:21I'm not cooking tonight, unless I start tomorrow.
10:25For the Hwinan family in Surrey,
10:37it's not fast food eating parents that's the problem.
10:41Have your lunch.
10:44Full-time mum Cara and sports event coordinator Gareth
10:47eat a balanced diet
10:49and prepare 19-month-old Michael healthy food for every meal.
10:53It's Dindin's.
10:57I actually love cooking
10:59and I'll cook dinners fresh from scratch.
11:04We eat pretty healthily, to be honest.
11:07Michael, don't spit.
11:11Yes, you have to eat.
11:14Yes.
11:15Eat your dinner.
11:17Yes.
11:19Michael.
11:20Michael.
11:20Come on.
11:21Eat.
11:22Come on.
11:26Michael.
11:27Look, they're youngies.
11:28So nice.
11:29The trouble is, the more they try and control his eating,
11:34Michael.
11:35The more Michael rebels.
11:38That was very...
11:40No, you don't do that.
11:41You don't do that.
11:43Very naughty.
11:45Very naughty.
11:47Yes, naughty.
11:48This is what it's like every mealtime.
11:55He's not going to eat that, is he?
11:57No.
11:58It's affecting Cara and Gareth's relationship.
12:01Me and Gareth will, you know, be stressed each other
12:04because of what's going on
12:06and having to clean up all the food.
12:08And, yeah, it's a stressful time.
12:12Michael, sit down, please.
12:13Lunchtime.
12:16It's lunchtime, OK?
12:17Come on.
12:18Hey, hey, hey, hey.
12:20Every meal ends the same way.
12:22Cara and Gareth resort to fast food feeding.
12:25It doesn't help that they live directly above a fish and chip shop.
12:30Hi.
12:31Can I get a regular cod and small chips, please?
12:34When I give him fast food, I do feel like a bad parent.
12:37I really do, but I just think to myself,
12:39if he's eating something, then, you know,
12:42that that's better than having nothing.
12:45Thank you very much, Steve.
12:46Bye.
12:47Bye-bye.
12:48We've got to feed him.
12:50And if we can't give him the right things,
12:51you've got to give him something, don't you?
12:53So...
12:54The end result is that Michael is one toddler
12:57who knows how to get exactly what he wants.
13:00The shopping trolley always fills up with his favourite fast food.
13:06There you go, Mikey.
13:07Do I put them in the trolley?
13:08Put them in the trolley for us.
13:16On an average day, like Cuba in Cardiff,
13:19he's clocking up a whopping 3,000 calories.
13:25Michael's bad habits began after he became seriously ill.
13:28Michael came down with meningitis when he was six months old.
13:33The doctors were telling us that it was very, very serious.
13:37You know, we were sort of preparing ourselves and thinking the worst.
13:42When Michael had meningitis, yeah, it was very stressful.
13:45Yeah, I was talking about him nearly dying.
13:48Sorry.
13:53I can't even explain how terrible...
13:56I mean, for any child to go through that,
13:58especially when it's yours, it just is heartbreaking.
14:01Eat up.
14:03I think it's definitely affected how we behave with Michael
14:06because we give in to him.
14:09We just, like, spoil him a bit more than, you know,
14:13maybe we would if he hadn't have had meningitis.
14:15When most babies are starting to come off milk onto a normal diet,
14:21Michael was fighting for his life.
14:31For Cara, twice a week,
14:32it's a walk of shame into Michael's toddler group.
14:35All the other children have taken some fruit and vegetables
14:54out of the pots in the middle,
14:55put them on their plate,
14:56and they're all eating them.
14:57I always have to bring stuff with me to put on his plate,
15:00otherwise he won't eat what the other children are eating.
15:02Come and eat some fruit, Michael.
15:08Come and sit down and eat your fruit.
15:10Thanks, man.
15:13I feel really embarrassed as a mum
15:16giving my son, like, sweets and crisps and chocolate and stuff
15:20because I do want to give him healthy stuff,
15:23but it's just because he doesn't eat it,
15:26I want to give him something rather than nothing,
15:29but, yeah, I would say I am embarrassed, yeah.
15:34Cara and Gareth are desperate for help
15:36and are meeting Dr. Catherine Dendy,
15:40ex-head of feeding at Great Ormond Street Children's Hospital.
15:45Hello, I'm Catherine.
15:47I come to see Michael.
15:48Nice to meet you.
15:49As a clinical psychologist,
15:51she looks at the deep-seated reasons
15:52why children refuse healthy food.
15:55I've come along, actually, today
15:57to see Michael having a meal
15:58and just being able to experience with you what happens
16:03and, as far as possible,
16:05if you could just do what you would normally do...
16:08Catherine sits back and observes a typical mealtime.
16:12Carrot.
16:16Potato.
16:16Stop playing with your food.
16:26Put it in your mouth.
16:27It's yummy.
16:31No, no.
16:34No.
16:35No.
16:36Come on.
16:37Time to eat.
16:39Carrot.
16:41Please.
16:42As usual, Cara and Gareth end up giving in to Michael's demands
16:46and put him in his favourite spot on the sofa.
16:50Okay.
16:51Right, do you want to watch your programme?
16:52Yeah.
16:53And have some dindas on your lap?
16:56Yeah.
16:59In her consultation,
17:01Catherine starts with the impact of Michael's meningitis.
17:05It seems to me that what's happened to Michael
17:07is that this really, really important stage of weaning
17:10and building up the new tastes and the new textures
17:13has been interrupted
17:15and you've been feeling really, really anxious about it.
17:20If he starts eating something,
17:22you say, great,
17:23and you give him more of it.
17:24Yeah.
17:25And it just...
17:26It's like a circle, isn't it?
17:28Even if he's, like, the slightest bit,
17:31something's not right,
17:33just the very tiniest bit,
17:35I'm like, oh, there's something wrong with him.
17:38Yeah, yes, inside.
17:39It's natural, though, isn't it?
17:41Perfectly, perfectly natural.
17:43He is keen to put his hands into things and try them out.
17:48And you actually used a very interesting phrase.
17:50You said,
17:51don't play with your food, Michael.
17:55And I know we're all brought up not to play with our food.
17:59And I thought, actually,
18:03what we want him to do
18:05is play with his food.
18:07His table manners will come later.
18:10What I would like you to do
18:12is to take him to some classes
18:14that are run for little children
18:17to help him get used to fruit and veg
18:20and actually end up popping them in his mouth
18:23and maybe even enjoying them.
18:26Hopefully, yeah.
18:26But done in a fun way.
18:28Yeah.
18:29That would be really good.
18:30That would be great, wouldn't it, yeah.
18:31Catherine will be referring Michael
18:33to a children's feeding expert
18:34called Lucy Thomas for practical support,
18:37while she will work with Cara and Gareth
18:39on the reasons behind their anxieties.
18:49Right, how many pieces of garlic bread do you want, mate?
18:51I'll give you two, then, to start off with,
18:53just in case you want some more.
18:54Yeah!
18:54Just one, then.
18:56Harley Evans lives in Runcorn.
18:58There's no battle here over fruit and veg.
19:01He's reached the grand old age of three
19:03without his mum ever having cooked him a healthy meal.
19:07A milkshake.
19:08And look, what is it?
19:11It's yellow.
19:12Banana.
19:13Yep.
19:14Banana.
19:15Look at it!
19:16Each week, he eats around two portions of Donna meat,
19:20eight pieces of fried chicken,
19:22four portions of chips,
19:24two frozen pizzas,
19:26and 20 frozen nuggets.
19:28Wow, smiley faces!
19:30Worst of all, he'll guzzle 24 glasses of fizzy drink.
19:35Every seven days,
19:36he's basically eating two half-kilo packets of sugar.
19:39And there's one big reason.
19:43He's eating what his mum eats.
19:45Yeah.
19:46Can I have a small donut meat with chips,
19:49with cheese and mayonnaise, please?
19:51I always have fast food.
19:52It's just quicker, easier.
19:53Someone's made it for you.
19:55You don't have to stand around waiting for it to cook.
19:58And it tastes nice.
20:01Is there not a bottle of Coke?
20:02I usually order a kebab every night.
20:04Sometimes it's not always a kebab.
20:05It's like KFC or something else.
20:08But mainly it is kebabs.
20:11Teen mum, Taylor, had Harley when she was just 15.
20:16Sister Tiana followed two years later,
20:18and she combines being a single mum with studying part-time.
20:21Be careful, you.
20:24Taylor is frazzled,
20:26and Harley is becoming more of a handful every day.
20:31Stop it.
20:34I said no.
20:37Recently, I've noticed that Harley is more hyperactive than he has been.
20:42It's probably due to the food that he's eating.
20:46I can see the chocolate.
20:49Oh, burgers.
20:50Should we go and get some pizza?
20:52Do you want pepperoni or cheese?
20:54Chicken.
20:55I got one of them.
20:56Pears.
20:57I like pears.
20:59You've never tasted a pear.
21:01Veg, Taylor.
21:02I don't like that.
21:04Taylor's mum, Mandy, helps out during the week
21:07and has major concerns about what Taylor feeds Harley and herself.
21:11You've missed all the good food out, Taylor.
21:14It's all right.
21:14It's pasta.
21:15We've got some mashed potatoes.
21:18No, I don't like it.
21:19It takes ages to make.
21:20So if you're going to buy pasta, buy a pasta pot.
21:22Can I have some of your chocolate, please?
21:24No.
21:26A little bite.
21:27No.
21:28Last time Taylor had a vegetable, it was from the kebab shop,
21:34deep fried in the form of chips with cheese on top.
21:38If she carries on the way she is, she's going to end up obese.
21:42So if you're maybe going to get fat?
21:43No, but if you carry on with your takeaways, that's how it's going to go.
21:49Exercise.
21:51How do you exercise?
21:52I'm not allowed after Harley.
21:53It's a bottle of liquid.
21:56And a packet of wotsits.
21:57That's it.
21:58To exercise.
22:02Harley's diet really does need to change now
22:07because otherwise he will think it's the norm
22:10to eat what Taylor's given him.
22:11It's just not healthy.
22:18Taylor should know more than most
22:20what her diet could be doing to Harley.
22:23Last year, she suffered a heart attack.
22:26They couldn't find any known explanation for it.
22:29They said the only thing they can put it down to
22:31was all the stress of pregnancy.
22:33I wouldn't ever, ever want to go through that ever again.
22:37It was the worst four days of my life.
22:41I think even the doctors and everyone was shocked
22:46with her age, with her being so young.
22:48You just don't expect it to happen.
22:52Taylor has been told to change her diet
22:54to avoid any more stress to her heart.
22:56If I carry on eating the way I am,
22:58probably won't be here in ten years' time.
23:00Obviously, I think we have arguments
23:03because I am concerned about Taylor.
23:06If she carries on,
23:08it could lead to another heart attack.
23:11That could leave
23:12her children without a mum, basically.
23:17It's a tragedy that Mandy hopes can be avoided
23:20if Taylor takes action right now.
23:22After talking to her mum,
23:39Taylor agrees to see community dietitian
23:42Hayley Cooter,
23:43who specialises in paediatric nutrition.
23:45Can you see that number?
23:47That shows you what big boy you are.
23:48One in five children in the UK
23:51are now overweight by the age of five.
23:53A junk food generation
23:55is a ticking time bomb
23:56for a really worrying amount of problems.
23:59I'm seeing a lot of overweight
24:01and obese children at the moment.
24:03I see tooth decay, constipation,
24:07rickets even from lack of vitamin D.
24:10These are all caused by an unbalanced diet.
24:13According to this BMI,
24:16it is above average,
24:17and we're going to need
24:19to watch his food intake.
24:20Yeah.
24:21Really.
24:22These takeaways,
24:23is Harley having as well?
24:25Everything I've got, he wants.
24:27OK.
24:28And if you say he can't have it?
24:31I don't think I've ever said he can't.
24:32I'll just give it.
24:34OK.
24:34Do you think he copies you?
24:35Yeah.
24:38Hayley is most concerned
24:39about the enormous amounts
24:41of sugary cola
24:42that Harley is consuming.
24:43From this bowl of sugar,
24:48you might be able to measure out
24:50how much you think
24:51would be in his daily diet.
24:54Can I have a go?
24:55A little bit more.
24:57What's that about that?
24:59Can I have a go?
24:59Can I have a go?
25:00Yeah.
25:00Do you want to have a go?
25:01Because it's more than that,
25:03I'm afraid.
25:03Oh.
25:06Oh, Harley knows.
25:08Keep going.
25:10That is about
25:12how much sugar
25:15you, Mr. Harley,
25:17are eating
25:18in one day.
25:21It's about 150 grams there.
25:23Can we eat that sugar?
25:24No.
25:27Harley is having
25:28almost four times
25:29the amount of sugar
25:30that is recommended
25:31for his age.
25:33Not surprising,
25:34as diet-wise,
25:35he's just a mini version
25:36of his mum.
25:38Do you think
25:38your sugar intake
25:40would be more,
25:40or if you have more?
25:41No, I think mine would be more.
25:42Can you show me
25:43how much more
25:43you think you're having
25:44in a day?
25:45Cheers.
25:48After this,
25:49I want to go again.
25:51About luck.
25:52Okay.
25:52I'm afraid you're having
25:53a bit more than that.
25:55Shall we try it again?
25:56Yeah.
25:57Is this a day?
25:58This is in one day.
26:00Do you want me to keep going?
26:01Keep going.
26:02Oh, my God.
26:04Yeah, that's it.
26:06That's 500 grams,
26:07Taylor,
26:08in one day.
26:10Taylor is having
26:1110 times the recommended
26:12daily amount
26:13for a grown woman.
26:15Sugary foods
26:16give us
26:17instant bursts of energy.
26:19They push our blood sugar levels up.
26:21We also crash.
26:22Our blood sugar levels go down
26:24and we end up tired
26:26and grumpy
26:28and irritable
26:29and teary
26:31and mad.
26:32Do you think this
26:34goes on in your house?
26:36That describes me.
26:37Yeah.
26:38Can you maybe
26:39explain for me
26:40why you think
26:41you eat like this?
26:43It's probably
26:44through laziness.
26:45Do you think maybe
26:46if I could show you
26:47how to eat healthily
26:48and it was cheaper
26:49and it was cheaper?
26:49Would that
26:50even interest you?
26:52Yeah,
26:53if I could save money
26:53and get more stuff
26:54for me.
26:57Hayley set some
26:58clear guidelines
26:59for a healthy diet
27:00to start
27:01straight away.
27:03It is going to be hard
27:04but I'm going to try
27:04my best
27:05and with Harley as well.
27:07I'm just not going to
27:08buy any stuff in.
27:10I'm going to have to
27:11be really strict
27:12with myself.
27:12She's forgotten
27:15that food
27:16and health
27:17are connected
27:17so she has
27:19no idea
27:20that the sugar
27:20the fat
27:22the saturated fats
27:23the salt
27:24that she's
27:25putting in her body
27:26is having
27:27any effect
27:28whatsoever
27:29on her health.
27:33In Cardiff
27:34Sam Fish
27:35is facing
27:36a huge struggle
27:37to get Cuba
27:37on the right
27:38nutritional track.
27:40His current diet
27:42is likely
27:42to cause anemia
27:43which in some cases
27:45can slow down
27:46a child's development.
27:47He's hitting home
27:48the effect
27:49of his diet
27:49that we've allowed
27:50him to have
27:51is affecting him.
27:52He's going to have
27:53a blood test now
27:54he could be
27:54anemic.
27:55It's obviously
27:56affecting his health.
27:58It does make me
27:58feel a bit guilty.
28:01Right, okay
28:01we're just going to
28:02pop this little strap
28:03on his arm
28:03it doesn't hurt
28:04it's just a bit
28:04of pressure, okay?
28:05Okay, yeah.
28:06Just pop this on
28:07a minute mate
28:07just pull it
28:08nice and tight
28:08okay?
28:10There we are
28:11saying good boy
28:12you know
28:12you shouldn't
28:13feel that
28:13okay?
28:14Okay, yeah.
28:15Okay.
28:17Good boy
28:18nice and still
28:18nice and still
28:20nice and still
28:21okay
28:21nice and still
28:22darling
28:22nice and still
28:23okay
28:23I'm sorry
28:24I'm sorry
28:25okay okay
28:26okay
28:27okay darling
28:27okay
28:28what makes
28:30them so upset
28:31is because
28:32they're being
28:32in the day
28:34you know
28:35all right
28:36that did not
28:38go well at all
28:38it's traumatic
28:39for Cuba
28:40it's traumatic
28:41for me
28:41it's just
28:43I feel quite
28:44so devastated now
28:45the results
28:56will come through
28:57in a couple
28:58of weeks
28:58back at home
29:03Sam is determined
29:04to start changing
29:05her family's diet

29:21that's what's there
29:22there's one pack
29:24of biscuits
29:24which are oat
29:25biscuits
29:25so they make
29:27them with oats
29:27and there's no
29:28chocolate on them
29:29Sam's also
29:36facing up to
29:37her fears
29:37of a messy
29:38kitchen
29:38and has been
29:39cooking fresh
29:40meals for the
29:41last two evenings
29:42the problem
29:43is
29:44Simon is
29:45finding it
29:45hard to
29:46cut out

29:54in tears
29:54when I came
29:54home from
29:55work Friday
29:55I was really
29:57really deflated
29:57with you
29:58I think

29:59how disappointed
30:00I was
30:01but I enjoyed
30:01my takeaway
30:02yeah
30:03and I'm not
30:03I don't think
30:04it's going to be
30:04realistic to be
30:05honest with you
30:05to get rid of
30:06everything
30:07you know
30:08for years
30:08anemic
30:08from his diet
30:09really
30:09it's amazing
30:10we've got to
30:10take responsibility
30:10for that
30:11sign
30:11oh
30:18shall I get
30:19to ask
30:19my butcher

31:15being a teenager
31:16how you getting
31:22on with it

31:25he's still eating
31:25them but he's
31:26just like not
31:27having all the
31:27crap in between
31:28that was his
31:29favourite word
31:30cake
31:31yeah it's like
31:32every time we
31:32used to take him
31:33out and that
31:33he'd be the
31:34first one
31:34mostly to ask
31:35for a
31:35McDonald's
31:36celebrate
31:40we should

32:07like to put
32:07them back for
32:08mummy
32:08and shut the
32:09shut the
32:10three weeks
32:10into what's
32:11meant to be
32:11a new routine
32:12three year old
32:13Harley is still
32:14on his fast food
32:15diet
32:16there you go
32:17there you go
32:17there's your smileys
32:18your dippers in
32:19your sauce
32:19oh so they're
32:22easier to eat
32:23yeah
32:23what about your
32:24smileys
32:25you're going to
32:25try some of them
32:26I haven't really
32:29I haven't really been
32:30able to achieve any
32:30of the goals that
32:31Hayley set
32:32because I've had
32:34things going on in
32:35my life and my
32:35mind's been preoccupied
32:36when I first got them
32:38I was like yeah I'm up
32:39for a challenge I'll do
32:39this and in my head I was
32:41like yeah I will do
32:42this I want to do
32:42this but then the
32:43reality of life
32:44didn't fit in with
32:46my lifestyle
32:47with difficult clients
32:49dietitian Hayley
32:50Kuta will sometimes use
32:51a more dramatic
32:52approach to drive the
32:53dangers home
32:54and with sugar mad
32:55Harley there's one
32:57immediate danger
32:58has you been to the
33:01dentist before
33:02no I'm scared of the
33:03dentist
33:03you're scared of the
33:04dentist
33:05what's that
33:07let's go
33:09let's go
33:11nearly 30,000
33:14children under five
33:15are admitted to
33:16hospital every year
33:17with severe tooth
33:18decay
33:18you just see on the
33:21side of this tooth
33:22down here
33:23he's that little
33:24mark just on the
33:25side of the tooth
33:25there
33:25and what those
33:26little marks are
33:27are just very early
33:28signs of decay
33:29developing in the
33:29teeth
33:30so all these
33:32sugary drinks and
33:34the things are
33:34starting to actually
33:35have an impact on
33:36his teeth there now
33:37okay well done
33:39Harley
33:39it's a massive jolt for
33:46Taylor and a hard
33:47lesson about the harm
33:48she's doing to Harley
33:49it shocked me really
33:52what the dentist said
33:53I knew that it would
33:55be harming Harley's
33:56teeth but I didn't
33:57realise how much it
33:59was affecting his
34:00teeth but now I'm just
34:01going to cut drinks out
34:02altogether other than
34:04water or milk and the
34:05stone for me as well
34:06I'm thinking of
34:08Taylor finally agrees
34:11to take expert advice
34:12on board and gets
34:13started on changing
34:14her and Harley's diet
34:16she tells me that her
34:17mum and her friends
34:20and family are
34:20supporting her in
34:21this and yet she's
34:24not fully able to do
34:25it at the moment by
34:26herself so I do think
34:28a support group is
34:29going to be going to
34:30be useful even if
34:31it's just for some
34:32cooking or talking to
34:34other mums who are
34:35in a similar position
34:36Taylor finally
34:40realises Action is
34:41needed and is
34:42inspired to attend
34:43Parent Power a
34:44support group for
34:45young parents run by
34:46Action for Children
34:47at Houghton Youth
34:48Service
34:49we meet every Friday
34:50afternoon we cook
34:51healthy alternatives to
34:52popular food like
34:53pizzas kebabs
34:54cakes
34:56do you cook at home?
34:58I've tried
34:59never set the house
35:01on fire
35:01I've got it into
35:02my head that I
35:03can't cook it but
35:03I'll probably put
35:04if I try it
35:05it's easy
35:06we do a lot of
35:07different stuff
35:07we've done spaghetti
35:08bolognese we've done
35:09roast dinners
35:09healthy option pizzas
35:11looks like I've just
35:12got out into my garden
35:13and decided to make a
35:14pizza
35:14with the grass
35:16Taylor's freshly
35:18prepared pizza contains
35:19around 470 calories
35:21whilst Harley's usual
35:23delivered variety
35:24would tot up a
35:25massive 3000
35:27would you like to
35:29come to a good
35:30like this or have you
35:31ever close
35:31come to a good
35:32I've been offered
35:32to come to different
35:33groups like this but
35:34I don't know why
35:35I always think people
35:35are going to judge me
35:36for being a young
35:37single mum
35:37before I come here I
35:38used to just order out
35:40and put stuff in the
35:41people
35:41that's all I did
35:42but I started coming in
35:44here and I started
35:45eating like pasta and
35:46stuff like that
35:47I would have never
35:48actually sat and
35:49thought yeah let's try
35:50this
35:50I'll definitely come
35:53again and then it's
35:54something I can take
35:54home with me
35:55me and Harley can do
35:56you can actually sit
35:57and say oh I made my
35:58tea I made this
35:59and then that'll bring
36:01us closer together
36:02in a healthy way
36:03in Surrey Cara and
36:14Gareth try and feed
36:1619-month-old Michael
36:17healthy home-cooked food
36:18every day
36:20he hasn't touched
36:21his toast
36:22since contracting
36:25meningitis a year ago
36:26they're over-controlling

39:30that we just
39:32tried
39:32I don't
39:33I'm not keen
39:34on that anyway
39:34just a matter
39:36of confidence
39:37for me doing it
39:37as well
39:38I suppose
39:38Cara and Gareth's
39:42relationship
39:42is still suffering
39:44and meal times
39:44are still chaos
39:46do you want to go

39:55thankfully their
39:58first consultation
39:59with Dr Catherine
40:00is scheduled
40:01what particularly is it
40:04that worries you
40:04I don't know
40:05it's just that
40:06he's not going to
40:06reach his milestones
40:07and maybe miss out
40:09on things
40:09and be a bit slow
40:10I get really scared
40:12when he doesn't
40:13eat enough
40:14I think he's like
40:15he won't be able
40:16to tell us
40:17and he'll get
40:19thinner and thinner
40:20and I don't know
40:21I just
40:21like I think he's
40:23going to get so hungry
40:25he's going to starve
40:26he's a silly guy
40:29and you're right
40:30there with
40:31the sort of emotion
40:33that was around
40:34when he was ill
40:36yeah
40:37you tend to think
40:37the worst
40:38isn't it
40:38yeah
40:38yeah
40:39definitely
40:39yeah
40:40yeah
40:40is he unhappy
40:42does he
40:44look at those
40:45he's got energy
40:46yeah
40:47is he reaching
40:50his milestones
40:50see we're silly
40:52because we know
40:52we know
40:53all this is
40:54we know he's okay
40:55like yes
40:56I think we're
40:58too quick to get
40:59stressed aren't we
41:00and start fretting
41:01yeah
41:02you know
41:02children are naturally
41:04suspicious of food
41:05and use all their
41:06senses to work out
41:07what's okay to eat
41:09we're going to play
41:11a game together
41:11and I hope it's
41:13going to be fun
41:13and it's about
41:14experiencing how
41:16Michael feels
41:17when he's presented
41:18with food
41:20that he has
41:20not a clue about
41:21hopefully what
41:22Cara and Gareth
41:23are going to do
41:24is feel
41:24what it's like
41:26for Michael
41:26I just have to
41:28warn you
41:28that some of them
41:29are not edible
41:30it's a bit worrying
41:32when you say
41:32some of them aren't edible
41:33that smells like pain
41:34so would you eat that
41:38no
41:38no
41:38well done
41:40it smells foodie
41:42I can't put that
41:43finger on it
41:43I smell that loads of times
41:45it's not bad
41:50so I put you out of your misery
41:55it's an iron tonic
41:59you know tonic
42:01kind of thing
42:02because I was going to say
42:02it does smell iron-y
42:04and tastes a bit iron-y
42:06yeah
42:06now
42:07if you're Michael
42:08and I put some food
42:09in front of you
42:10and I say
42:11eat that
42:11it's good for you
42:12what's Michael
42:14going to do
42:14oh my gosh
42:16that's so true
42:17yeah
42:17he's going to reach out
42:19he's going to touch it
42:20and feel it
42:21and he might do
42:22some squishing
42:23and that's really important
42:25that's not bad manners
42:26that's
42:27what is this
42:28children
42:30when they're presented
42:30with a new food
42:31need on average
42:3416 tastes of it
42:3516 times
42:37to actually get used to it
42:38wow
42:38it's so strange
42:40to see it
42:42from Michael's point of view
42:43new foods
42:44tasting it
42:45smelling
42:46feeling

44:34aren't they
44:35oh Cuba's getting stuck in
44:37aww Cuba
44:39it should be a time

45:13to the family home
45:16what are you most missing
45:18from your diet
45:19put it this way
45:19I think if Sam wasn't here
45:21and she was in work
45:22I could have quite easy
45:22checked all the kids in the car
45:23and gone to get some chicken
45:26quite easy
45:26you just succumbed to temptation
45:28oh yeah
45:29I've got a little challenge for you Simon
45:32oh
45:32what is it
45:34what's this challenge
45:35I'd like you to go
45:37and buy your most favourite

45:41oh yeah
45:43the fried chicken and chips
45:45do I get to eat it
45:46yeah
45:46and then what I'm going to try and do
45:48is to put you off it
45:50oh like you know
45:51this kind of water
45:52as you're eating it
45:52I'm just going to tell you
45:53a few home truths about it
45:55okay good luck
45:56because I don't get put off that easy
45:58a bit of a bristle in there
45:59but I don't get off eating me
46:00pumped up chicken with water
46:02on your way then
46:03no problem
46:03don't forget the beans babe
46:05oh
46:06Simon reunites himself
46:13with a supersized bucket
46:14of fried chicken
46:15in lightning quick time
46:17I think this is going to be
46:19really hard giving up this
46:20you couldn't resist could you
46:23no I can't
46:24does it still look
46:25appealing to you
46:26it doesn't smell nice though
46:28it doesn't smell nice to me
46:30it smells very
46:30very greasy really
46:32there's more than eight pieces
46:36in their slime
46:36yeah that's a spicy wing
46:37but comes with eight pieces
46:3916 pieces of chicken
46:40so would you normally have bought
46:41this amount of chicken
46:42yeah
46:43that's quite a lot of chicken
46:46isn't it really
46:46yes
46:47oh gross
46:49look you can actually squeeze it out
46:52can you hear there
46:53yeah
46:54look at it
46:55it's all bubbling to the surface
46:56oh
46:57it's pretty gross
46:58isn't it
46:58yeah
46:58oh
46:59rivers
47:00rivers
47:01rivers of grease
47:03running down my hand
47:04how gross is that
47:06this should not be all
47:08your daily diet
47:09this is food gorged in harmful fat
47:13what exactly does that mean for Cuba
47:15gross isn't it
47:20so this is the amount of saturated fat
47:24that Cuba was getting in his diet
47:27every week
47:28he should have been having about a fifth of that amount
47:31okay so it's really bad news
47:35this is a heart attack diet
47:36yeah
47:37because what we're storing up is health problems for the future
47:39we've had this like three times a week in one week haven't we
47:42oh maybe more
47:43less than we've had to ever take away on top of this
47:45don't look so tasty
47:46are they
47:46maybe fried
47:48next Jane wants to make sure sisters Cleo and Shay
47:52aren't hiding away any snacks for a foraging Cuba
47:55what's the contraband we've got here
47:59what's the contraband we've got here
47:59wow
48:02bye bye
48:03my goodness me
48:05anything under the pillow
48:06and what's in the bin
48:09oh my word
48:12oh look at this
48:16wave bye bye to your sweeties then
48:18old habits are hard to break
48:23it might seem tough on the girls
48:25but Jane has Cuba and the whole family's future health in mind
48:29in Surrey contraband is nowhere to be seen
48:36there we go
48:36now what you can do Gareth is you can show Michael how you can break the broccoli
48:40with the help of feeding expert Lucy Thomas
48:43Michael has spent the last two weeks exploring healthy food in the home
48:47and now when it comes to the table
48:49it won't be just something that's put down there
48:51and oh it's time to start eating
48:53okay
48:54ta
48:54wow
48:56thank you
48:57thanks
48:57what we can do here is Michael wants to keep a piece of the broccoli
49:02so let's give Michael a piece of the broccoli to hold
49:05here we go look Michael
49:07would you like to hold one
49:10no okay well we're going to give it to mummy to cook
49:13yeah
49:13and we're also
49:14we're also going to put some of these in aren't we
49:17look look at the shape you shape them
49:19look you shape them
49:21what did you want the broccoli for is it because it's your broccoli
49:26is that what it is is it your broccoli
49:28yeah because you did all the cutting
49:31thank you
49:32lovely
49:33thank you you can have that bit
49:35that's for Michael
49:37that's for Michael okay
49:38great let's go and take it and show daddy
49:39come on then
49:40yeah
49:41Michael is continuing to make small changes every day
49:45Kara and Gareth are much more relaxed with his progress
49:49seven weeks after her first visit psychologist Dr Catherine Dendy is doing a final check on Michael
50:10he's just picked up the biggest bit of broccoli and put it in his mouth and he's munching away
50:31he'll eat mounds of broccoli
50:36he'll delve right in
50:38he'll delve right in
50:39he's like a different boy at the moment
50:41so it's such a big change
50:43I think before when we talked about the memories of him being diagnosed and going into the hospital
50:49this was understandably really upsetting
50:53yeah we'd never really openly talked about his meningitis before to anybody but after
51:00we had done we actually went home and talked about it ourselves
51:03and
51:04it's a big help just to get things out
51:08yeah definitely
51:09and then
51:10I think we were just bottling it up too much
51:12just to see the way he is now
51:13yeah
51:14you know he's obviously picked up on everything so far
51:16and I don't think he's going to have many problems
51:19yeah
51:20if at all
51:21and you two together look much happier
51:23mmm
51:24stressed all the time isn't we
51:25yeah definitely
51:26now we're relaxed with each other
51:28and don't argue as much
51:31as much
51:32I love it
51:33it helps because we're getting married
51:36great
51:37yeah
51:38I think in the future you're going to need to really be firm
51:41not only with Michael but actually with yourselves as well
51:44I think we've learnt a lot ourselves
51:46definitely
51:47yeah
51:48I think we'll be able to do it
51:49we'll do it
51:50yeah
51:51in Runcorn it's a week after the cooking class
51:57and Taylor is for the first time in her life starting to cook at home
52:01what do you do babe?
52:04what am I doing? I'm cutting up tomatoes
52:07it's healthier for her heart and healthier for Harley
52:12there to go and our super healthy pizzas
52:16wow I'm shocked at your mum making her own pizzas like this
52:20clever aren't I?
52:21do you want me to show you what to do now?
52:23yes
52:24right you get this
52:25then you squeeze some in the middle
52:27your turn
52:28and then you get the spoon and spread it all over
52:33wow
52:34right let's go and put these in the oven
52:37I used to think that I couldn't cook
52:39but it's evidently clear that I can cook
52:42I didn't ever think I'd be able to do this in me life
52:44I deserve like a certificate or something like a medal
52:48oh they're done
52:50how exciting
52:52yeah let's get them all out first
52:54yeah
52:56that's a bit
52:59his diet still isn't perfect
53:02but he's cut down over half his sugar intake
53:05and is a much calmer child
53:07it's good isn't it?
53:09doesn't seem as bad as he was in the beginning
53:11probably because he's not getting as much junk in him
53:14I feel so proud of myself for making these
53:16I understand now like why my mum was moaning at me
53:19I need to start eating healthy because of my heart
53:22and if I just ignore the fact of what happened
53:25and carry on eating how I did
53:26there's more chance that it will happen again
53:28and I don't want that for the kids
53:30I realise now that the problem is
53:32lack of motivation and just laziness really
53:35but now I've had people there telling me what to do
53:38showing me how to do things
53:39and I've not just been left to my own devices
53:41and I now know that I can do things
53:43so then now I will carry on to do them
53:45and my mum will probably still be there giving me a kick up the back
53:48telling me I need to do these things
53:51Harley, which pizza is nicer?
53:54that pizza or the pizza that comes with the kebab?
53:58this one
54:05Cuba, come on lovely
54:10In Cardiff, Cuba's blood test for anemia has finally come through
54:15he's borderline anemic
54:18which I sort of knew when the wake up call
54:21meeting Jane, going through everything
54:23he's sort of brought home
54:25so if God knows how bad he would have been
54:27if we carried on with the old diet
54:29he would have been severely anemic within another year
54:32wouldn't he?
54:33so that's something that I'm glad we've nipped in a bit then
54:37the Fish family have totally changed their eating habits
54:42Simon's curbed his fast food cravings
54:45and Sam is triumphing with her healthy home cooking
54:49what's your thinking guys?
54:50I'm cooking everyday now to be honest with you
54:52which is not too bad
54:54Cuba's new diet is improving his sleep patterns
54:57and most importantly he's now well on the way to beating his anemia
55:01what we were giving him before with the fried chicken and stuff like that
55:09was way too much for him
55:10we didn't think it was affecting him as much as it was
55:14when you actually see it for yourself
55:16then you're going to change that
55:20although Sam may never quite get over her messy kitchen
55:24not for that!
55:25it's a whole need to make her mess
55:26what do I say to you mate?
55:27that will get washed up
55:29you can't let someone stand
55:31ultimately the whole family and of course Cuba
55:34are on the path to a healthier future
55:38looking back at it all now
55:39it was nothing to do with Cuba
55:41absolutely nothing
55:42so the problem definitely laid with us
55:44in that we didn't take control of
55:46control of our baby
55:47basically he was controlling us
55:49so he was definitely definitely with us
55:54I'll see you next time
56:24I'll see you next time
56:25I'll see you next time
56:26you
