Greater Manchester’s Transport Update

Let’s have a look at some of your transport news for this week, including Metrolink developments for Heywood, and a new cycle path near the airport.

00:00Hello and welcome to Manchester World, my name is Theo Hewson Betts and it's another

00:03great day here in the city of Manchester. So let's keep the vibes high with some brilliant

00:07positive transport news for the region. And we're going to be starting over in Haywood

00:12which is a lovely little town on the border of Rochdale and Bury that's been starved of

00:16effective transport links into Manchester and the surrounding towns for a long time.

00:20But last week's announcement from the government that we'll see £2.5 billion invested into

00:24Greater Manchester's transport projects could offer a big chunk of hope to residents there.

00:29The money is set to be directed towards trains, buses and even some cycle projects but the

00:33one that matters most to the people of Haywood is the Metrolink. The town is set to be connected

00:38into the lines that serve both Rochdale and Bury and it will offer a new lease of life

00:42to the businesses there as well as making it a more attractive area to live for people

00:46who work in the city. The hope is that work will start fairly soon and we'll endeavour

00:50to keep you up to date here at Manchester World but nevertheless it's incredibly positive news

00:55for the town.

00:56Moving on to some more positive news this time from a cycling perspective with a new

01:00access point having been opened up on a popular trail that runs near to Manchester Airport.

01:05Now the new access point is located ironically enough on the old Ultringham Road and connects

01:10to the airport orbital route which is used by hundreds of people each day many of whom work

01:13at the airport and use it as a sustainable means of travelling to work.

01:17Now while this access point will serve a portion of people already it's actually part of an even

01:20bigger plan to build a 26 mile Greater Bolin Trail which would be a walking and cycling route

01:25designed to connect to the Trans Pennine Trail over towards Dunham Massey towards the Middlewood Way.

01:31Finally Transport for Greater Manchester have released their advice for staying safe in

01:34the warm weather over the next couple of weeks with a focus on staying hydrated and avoiding

01:39travelling during the hottest parts of the day.
