00:00Kingston Council has announced plans to ban junk food, vaping and gambling adverts to tackle a health and mental health crisis.
00:12Adverts promoting unhealthy food, vaping and gambling could soon be banned across Kingston as part of a new effort to combat rising obesity and diabetes rates.
00:25A recent report from council officers cited by the local Democracy Reporting Service outlines a proposed advertising policy aimed at improving public health by limiting residents' exposure to harmful products.
00:44Now, according to Kingston's 2023 Joint Strategic Needs Assessment, over 2,000 new diabetes cases were likely linked to excess weight.
00:55The report also identified tobacco use, alcohol consumption, high BMI and poor diet and high blood pressure as the top five risk factors for ill health and early death among adults in the south west London borough.
01:11Under the new proposed policy, advertising for products deemed harmful would be restricted on all council-owned properties, assets and through council advertising contracts as well.
01:26If approved, the council would have final say on whether specific adverts meet those new requirements and standards.
01:34Now, the new move in Kingston is to ban those junk food advertisements, but also vaping and gambling as well.
01:42So, would Londoners like to see that kind of advertising banned across the capital?
01:48I think it's a great thing that they've started to ban it. Should have done it a long time ago.
01:55It's things that you see when you're a kid, a lot of like fancy posters, colourful posters, and those images just stick in your mind.
02:01Like sometimes, even I get takeaway food, sometimes it's like, oh, I see that nice burger on the poster.
02:06I'll grab one of those.
02:07But yeah, no, I think it's a great idea going forward.
02:11And for my children who are now grown up, they can go and buy a KFC or, you know, whatever they want to do.
02:19They don't need to be sold it.
02:21Yeah, there shouldn't be any adverts for either vaping or gambling at all, especially vaping where there's so many young kids, you know,
02:27taking as alternative because it's a lot cheaper and easier to access.
02:31So, again, it's all like the posters, the design they're trying to make, like, you know, kind of two sides for a coin.
02:40When I'm with my children, we play cards, so we're gambling.
02:45And then someone else is showing them how to gamble and lose all their money.
