00:01In a new report, the London Assembly Economy, Culture and Skills Committee suggests that serious financial and practical barriers, including
00:10the cost of childcare and housing, have played a major role in families moving out of London.
00:17The Mayor of London has now been told to take a number of measures to reverse this trend, including implementing
00:23specific requirements for homes suitable for children in the next London plan.
00:31Ultimately, the Cross Party Committee said the Mayor should help ensure London achieves child-friendly city status with UNICEF. So
00:40is London too expensive to raise a family?
00:43It's a good debate because I've lived in London. I'm actually from the north of England, but I've lived in
00:48London now for 30 years.
00:53We've got a relatively young family and during COVID, we looked at the possibility of moving out, as a lot
01:02of people did, getting out of what they call the metropolis, full of its dangers.
01:08I personally am really pleased that I stayed. I think London has a lot to offer for people in terms
01:18of, you know, especially with children growing up.
01:22I, you know, we talk about the dangers of London with crime and so forth, but I don't think it's
01:28much different to any other city.
01:30Well, you think London's expensive anyway to everyone. It's not necessarily, well, it's naturally expensive to have a family and
01:39London is one of the most expensive cities on the earth.
01:41So it's like, it's not necessarily, well, it is a problem currently, but at the same time, it's not, it's
01:51not a problem that I think everyone should like very much focus on.
01:56It's naturally expensive to start a family.
01:58I think the cost of living, yeah, I mean, things are expensive. Rent is incredibly expensive.
02:05Housing, you know, mortgages to buy houses here. I mean, we recently bought a house just in this area two
02:14years ago.
02:15And for what you get, value for money compared to what I could get up north is astronomical. It's incredible.
02:22London's an expensive city. So it's a case of, if you want to move out, if you can and want
02:28to stay here, fine.
02:29But if you can't, then you just have to evaluate if you can actually have a family yet.
02:35But it's all relative. It's London. You're living in London, you know, in an area like this, Battersea.
02:42It's a, it becomes a village in itself. It's a great place to live. And you're only half away from,
02:48half an hour away from the National Gallery.
02:51You know, so London has an awful lot to offer for people growing up here with young families.
