00:03Employees at a Claycross packaging plant have been told their jobs are at risk
00:07as the company's new American owners considered closing the factory altogether.
00:12Earlier this year, DS Smith, one of the UK's leading suppliers of retail packaging
00:17to the likes of Tesco and Amazon, finalised a takeover by Memphis-based International Paper,
00:23the largest such company in the world, in a reported £5.8 billion deal.
00:27In May, the new management announced that it was looking to restructure its UK operations
00:33with the potential closure of five sites, affecting around 300 rolls by the end of 2025.
00:39The workforce of about 140 people at the Claycross base on Pilsley Road in Dainsmore
00:44have now learned of more concrete proposals to relocate their factory's workload
00:49to other premises around the country.
00:51Paul Clarke, Managing Director for the UK and Ireland Packaging Division said,
00:55In what are tough trading conditions for the industry, we must do the work now to optimise
01:00the business for the future.
01:02We are in consultation with the employees and union representatives regarding the Claycross
01:06site and the proposed closure.
01:08This is a proposal at this stage and no decisions have been made.
01:11The consultation process is ongoing and we cannot comment further.
01:15Demolition work on a Darmish home severely damaged by a possible gas blast explosion is set to start today.
01:25Emergency services remain on Eden Street in Alverston following the blast that took place on Tuesday
01:29at around 7.24pm.
01:32Due to the complexities of the process, alongside the investigation into the cause of the explosion,
01:37demolition work is expected to take several days.
01:39Detectives investigating the cause of the incident are keen to hear from anyone with any information,
01:45as well as anyone who witnessed the explosion.
01:48Officers would like to speak to the driver of a black Ford Fiesta,
01:51which was seen to drive past the property shortly before the explosion,
01:54as they may have information which could help with their investigation.
