TTFA first vice-president Colin Murray feels this country's performances in the last few months suggests that the team is capable of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup.
Transcript
00:00Even though Trinidad and Tobago lost to Costa Rica by two goals to one,
00:06the result was good enough to take the English-speaking Caribbean country to the final stage of World Cup qualifiers.
00:11That's where they face three other nations in another group,
00:15with the table topper automatically getting to the World Cup,
00:17while the runner-up might have another shot at getting there depending on other results.
00:22First Vice President of the TTFA Colin Murray has lauded Dwight York for being able to deliver
00:27ever since his appointment as coach of TNT.
00:30Let me firstly say that I think Dwight York is doing a super job.
00:35He came into the team in a difficult position when we had drawn with Grenada 2-0,
00:42we had hammered the Bahamas, but qualification for the World Cup was really, you know, was a little bit dicey.
00:51I think he's now, what he has done, he's brought a professionalism to the team,
00:55he's brought a desire to the players.
00:59Having said that, Murray is aware it's a work in progress,
01:02as York has to address certain areas, with TNT aiming to qualify for their second men's Senior World Cup.
01:09Murray uses the example of the qualifier against Costa Rica,
01:13where the Twin Island country conceded twice before cutting the lead in half.
01:17More or less, he's found what he's looking for.
01:20There's still one or two little gaps that he has to close.
01:22I think defensively we're not as tight as we should be.
01:25And he mentioned it, he said he wanted to keep a clean sheet against Costa Rica.
01:29I'll tell you, going to Costa Rica is always difficult.
01:31You're going to a country that is ranked higher than us,
01:34you're going to a home crowd that is very partisan.
01:37So, you know, I think at the end of it, 2-1 was a pretty good result.
01:41When York was a player, he got a taste of World Cup action as TNT qualified for the 2006 prestigious tournament in Germany.
01:50So the question is, can he get to do so as coach?
01:54I think we have a good chance as anybody.
01:56You know, yes, I'm maybe a little bit biased.
01:59But the way the team is playing and the progression I've seen of the team in the last few months,
02:05I think we have a decent chance.
02:08Prior to the next round of World Cup qualifiers,
02:11TNT will be focusing on the CONCACAF Gold Cup
02:13with the opener on Sunday against USA.
02:17Vinod Nawani, Chiefs Expoort.
