00:00It looks like there is a high likelihood that Nick Chubb becomes a Houston Texan running back
00:06from Cleveland who had several great years in Cleveland and then injuries the last couple
00:11years have really robbed him of those two seasons. A catastrophic knee injury two years ago,
00:16able to come back from that last season but then broke a foot late in the season and just
00:21last year was the first season where you look at his numbers and you go, okay, well that looks
00:26like a guy who might be a shell of what he used to be. I didn't realize, I did not realize
00:32how amazing Nick Chubb's numbers had been for the Cleveland Browns when he was healthy. He
00:39didn't have a season where he was under five yards a carry in the first four or five years
00:44of his career. He was amazing. And he ends up last year having 3.3 yards per carry, which
00:50does annoy me. Anybody who's read any of the articles about this signing, they just kind
00:55of lump in and they say, well, in the last two years he's averaged 3.9 yards per carry.
01:00That's bogus because in 2023, before he got injured, he was running just as well as he's
01:05ever run. He was above five yards per carry as well. Last year, it was, and it was everything
01:11and it wasn't just because he was on a bad Browns team. He'd been on bad Browns teams before.
01:15His yards after contact were much, much lower. He was at last year where previously in his career
01:24it was four yards after contact. Some people point out that he was hit behind the line of
01:29scrimmage a lot. He, sometimes that's what happens when a guy is less explosive than he
01:34used to be too and you're not hitting the hole as hard. So he just wasn't, he wasn't the same
01:39guy. This in a lot of ways feels like the Cam Akers signing. If they sign where you're going
01:46to get him on a good deal, likely a one-year deal, a lot of incentives. Diana Rossini reported
01:51that he had better offers of more money elsewhere. And yet he feels like this is the best situation
01:57for him. And that makes me feel like, yes, this is the best situation for him. You're getting,
02:02if he hits those incentives, then God bless him. It was worth everything. If it doesn't work out,
02:08then just like, I mean, with Cam Akers, it worked out. You ended up getting draft compensation for
02:12him, but the upside I think is higher than it was even for Cam Akers. Oh, for sure. Yeah. Like,
02:18if you get, if you get a, you're not going to get peak Nick Chubb again, I don't think,
02:23but if you get a healthy percentage of peak Nick Chubb and he's over the broken foot and he's now two
02:28years removed from the knee injury. Um, here was Jeremy Fowler was the first one that I saw have
02:35this news yesterday and it was on sports center. Here was Jeremy Fowler with the first report on
02:41the Texans and Nick Chubb's mutual interest in one another. Nick Chubb, free agent, one of the top
02:46free agent names still out there. I was told that he's hoping to sign here soon and maybe he gets
02:51something done before a mini camp gets into a team four-time pro bowler. The return to Cleveland's
02:57not totally off the table from what I'm told, but plan drafted multiple running backs. I'm told
03:03Houston could be one to watch here. They've been looking at that running back market, maybe adding
03:07somebody with Joe Mixon. Okay. Yeah. It develops very quickly yesterday. Cause that was yesterday
03:12morning. Yep. And then within a few hours, Jordan Schultz and Diana Rossini and probably others.
03:17Those are the two I saw basically said, no, this is, this is expected to happen as long as he passes
03:22the physical and probably it'll happen on Monday. Yeah. Yeah. Today in town today, take the physical
03:28and then, um, and then hopefully that will be fun. You know, if you get, if you get Nick Chubb now,
03:33I guess the, okay, two interesting things here. There's probably more than that, but two that are just
03:37popping into my head as you and I are talking this through, I would love to know who the other
03:43teams were that were offering Nick Chubb more money to where he saw this as an opportunity to
03:50come here for less money. Cause let's, let's face it. I would imagine. And we'll, if Nick Chubb signs
03:54with the Texans, we'll get a chance to ask him this at some point. Um, but what, you know, what,
04:00what exactly, what's his motivation? You know, what he's, is this a, is this a one year prove it deal
04:05where he's expecting if he has a good season, someone, I'm not, I don't think someone's going
04:09to fork over 20 million form or something like that, but he gets one last good contract from
04:14somebody. What, I guess my question, Seth, is what would make this an enticing situation in which
04:20to take less money in what could be an incentive laden contract. When you consider that a Joe Mixon
04:26is here and B Joe Mixon did a lot of what he did last year on his own. It was not because of the
04:31blocking upfront. Yeah. The, the positives are, I think specifically Joe Mixon. Cause I think I'm
04:37guessing Nick Chubb after the year, he had a state injury two years ago. He doesn't, I think he
04:45probably realistically looks at him as I can't be expected to get 25 carries per game. I don't want
04:50to get 25 carries per game. I just want to go out and get back what I had on a one year deal.
04:56And I can do it alongside a guy who is a workhorse, but that I'll probably, I'm going to get my reps
05:01and I can fit in seamlessly to this offense. Right. The downside is, man, that offensive line
05:07last year was not doing much for Joe Mixon. He had to do it on his own. So that'll be interesting
05:12to see, which, uh, you know, if, if Nick Chubb signs and after he talks to the media, who on the
05:19Texans did he talk to? I mean, Kamari Lasseter is a Georgia guy that probably probably has posters,
05:25probably had posters up on his wall, Nick Chubb as his senior year in high school. So in whoever
05:32else the common ties are, I think it's the CJ Stroud. It's Joe Mixon being here. A lot of times
05:38people might think, well, why would Nick Chubb want to go where there's already an established
05:42running back? In this situation, he wants to go specifically because there's an established
05:46running back. It is a prove it year for him. Um, and then whatever, if he had conversations
05:51with Nick Caley or D'Amico Ryans about just what they're planning to do on offense this
05:57year, it, it, it, that's, it, it probably just felt like, all right, I like these guys
06:02upside. Yeah. Yeah. It's a little, as we kind of talk it through, it reminds me a little
06:06of Dalton Schultz signing his one year. I'm not saying Dalton Schultz before getting here
06:11was what Nick Chubb was in Cleveland, but when Dalton Schultz signed here, it was before
06:15they'd even drafted CJ Stroud. So it was a, you know, when Schultz signed here, it was
06:20a bit of a bet of Casario, probably Bobby Slowick a little bit. Similarly, I think this
06:24is Nick Chubb coming in and this is a bit of a bet on Nick Caley and Cole Popovich to
06:29some degree with Nick Chubb, right? You know, so it's a little bit of unknown and a prove it
06:33contract. Yeah. And, uh, I think that with Mixon too, it's, I, I thought, I hope he didn't
06:40just think, oh yeah, it's D'Amico Ryans. He came from San Francisco. Our offense is very
06:44similar to San Francisco. So it'll be the same offense. Cause I don't think it's going
06:47to be, it's going to be a lot more like a new England offense. Um, and I, I doubt he thought
06:51about it that way, but I think that's kind of like the knee jerk. Oh yeah, they, they run
06:56like a, the, they're trying to be San Francisco and that's very similar to Chicago, uh, to Cleveland
07:01scheme. I don't think it's as, it's not as basic as that. It's, it's more basic in that.
07:06I like the people who are in charge. I like the idea of being, uh, sharing carries with Joe
07:11Mixon and I like CJ Stroud. Is there a dollar amount? I mean, it sounds like it's going to
07:16be a one-year deal. Is there a one-year deal? I'm guessing it's like, I'm guessing it's
07:20like, this is my pure and total guess. I'm guessing it's like 4 million with a boatload
07:24of incentives. I think that, I think so too. And what I was going to ask you was, is there
07:27a dollar amount where you would cringe a little bit and go, Ooh, that's a little too much
07:30for, for Nick. It was 10 million or something like that. It says Diana Rossini says it's going
07:35to be an incentive laden contract and that, that tickles me where I like to be tickled.
07:40Yeah. I mean, Mixon's making like nine, there's no way he's making more than Mixon. You know
07:45what I mean? So it's, I, that's, I think you nailed it. I think it's, I guess it might be
07:49what are the incentives? If the incentives, uh, because the, whatever you feel about the
07:54Texans and how aggressive they should be, Casario has done a really good job of managing the
07:58cap where these like huge guarantees, et cetera, et cetera, but they're shorter term contracts.
08:06And if you go out two years from now in 2027, the Texans have one of the best cap situations
08:11in the league. So they have a lot of flexibility to kind of push money off into the future.
08:16And it's not, it's not irresponsibly. So, so if the incentives are something like he's on
08:23the roster and he gets this and that and that I'll be a little disappointed. I'm guessing
08:28it's a lot more performance based. I bet it's both. I bet it's, is he on the day, you know,
08:31is he on the game day roster? And then he's got probably season incentives for yards and
08:35things like that. If I had to guess. One of the other things that a lot of people I've
08:39seen bring up and I did a live stream on this last night, a lot of people brought up, man,
08:43he's got such a reputation as just, uh, the right kind of guy works his butt off, like cares about
08:49the team, all those things that, uh, and I think Chubb is the classic guy that I think,
08:55I don't think you would have had a miles Garrett type situation. I know he had a little bit of a
08:59contract, uh, leveraging there a couple of years ago, but it seems like he, he just, he wanted to,
09:06he wanted to do right by the team and his teammates. And I think he, he's a good guy to
09:11have in that. I think a lot of times we'll play this in the seven o'clock hour, but a lot of times
09:15you can gauge what kind of guy it was at least by how the city that's losing him is reacting.
09:21They hate this in Cleveland. They hate this in Cleveland. There, there were people in Cleveland
09:25that knew he was a shell of his former self, but just wanted him back on the team. Cause he's Nick
09:30Chubb because he's that he's the right kind of guy. I think there's, I'm guessing there are a lot
09:34of people in Cleveland that are like, all right, you guys bent over backwards for miles Garrett.
09:38Who's awesome. And everything, but the same about him that I do about Nick Chubb. That's exactly right.
09:44That's exactly right. We'll get to that in the seven o'clock hour. Um, Aaron Wilson had a really good
09:48sit down with CJ Gardner Johnson over the weekend. I don't know if it was over the weekend or how
09:52recently it was. Um, but, but the quotes in the video started dropping this weekend from
09:57the interview, then we may need to skip around a little bit here. Um, the most interesting quote
10:03to me was let's do CJ Gardner Johnson too, Ben. Um, on his new team, CJ Gardner Johnson was not at OTAs.
10:11His explanation as to why he missed voluntary, voluntary, why he missed voluntary OTAs with his
10:18new team. The week I was there, it was very, very close to the places I've been before. Um,
10:27because this is a brand new, this is a brand new organization.
10:31We're trying to be the first team to put a bull on the ring. Um, that's, that's something that,
10:37you know, what is organized with really 10 years in here, really not really crazy, you know,
10:42what 10 plus 15, really not really too many years. So, um, I had to step back on too much
10:51sometimes. And I think coming off a Superbowl, it's a little too much for guys who, you know,
10:56feel like they're at, at us at the top of their profession right now because where they are.
11:01That's respectable. So we had to step back and I still had to humble up because now I'm at the bottom
11:06of the mountain with a team that never to the top. So I can't come in the top of the mountain,
11:11bring the top of the mountain to the bottom of the mountain. I can't do that.
11:13Okay. So just to explain the beginning there, he was here for a week back in April. He did,
11:17he did media. Remember he has
11:19hat. He has the way I hear that Seth is CJ Gardner Johnson is admitting that maybe he can be a little
11:27bit extra. It can be a little too much, but no, but almost like that because he's coming from a
11:33place where almost, uh, he's come off an experience that's too good. And I don't know if the Texans
11:39are ready to handle everything that I bring. I like, this is like, nah, Hey, I can't give this
11:44kid his first beer and then, and then give him his, uh, uh, chased by black tar heroin. Uh, like we
11:52just, this is, uh, I'm just, they can't handle exactly the me and my purest form. Yes. We need to,
11:58we need to, we need to ease them into me. I love that. And I, you know what? I give him a complete
12:02pass for it as well. Good job. Good self-awareness, CJ Gardner Johnson. It's, it's funny how this goes
12:08by various teams and whatever situation guys are in when it comes to OTAs. It's weird. It's almost
12:13arbitrary when people make a big deal out of an OTA, a voluntary OTA absence or not, because there
12:20are multiple other veteran players, uh, especially on the defensive line that weren't there for
12:24voluntary OTAs. And I don't think for, for injury purposes or whatever, they're just veterans
12:29exercising their rights. By and large, it's usually not a big deal. Um, but when a guy just got traded
12:35for and he's got a reputation or at least eyebrows raised about like, Hey, what, what kind of guy is
12:39this? Then it starts to get more attention, but for whatever it's worth, we didn't, nobody really
12:43focused in on the fact that CJ Gardner Johnson wasn't out there last week. I think fans in general
12:48have gotten more forgiving for guys missing OTAs. And I think this era of Texans football
12:54D'Amico doesn't seem as worked up as maybe previous head coaches might have been about
13:02Well, they've all been, I mean, they've all gotten the memo and teams have been fined if they are
13:06critical of any veterans. So they try really hard to not. Yeah, that's true. To at least act like,
13:11no, that's a good point. Maybe it's different. Maybe, maybe the chatter behind the scenes is
13:15different than what he's saying in front of a microphone. That's fair. Um, I don't really care.
13:20Like, I think, you know, this tomorrow will be the big one. You know, if they're missing the
13:23mandatory stuff, then something's up. That is the one that just that that's way more consistent.
13:28When guys miss mandatory mini camp, like Aaron Rogers last year, people are more inclined to be
13:33like, Hey, what the hell, man? Yeah, exactly. Exactly. And then we start caring about the money
13:37they're missing out on. That's right. How could you, how do you hate this team so much that you're
13:41giving up $300,000 or whatever it is? I'll tell you this though. Someone tweeted yesterday,
13:45I guess Lamar Jackson, some of these guys have bonuses built in if they do show up for the
13:49voluntary stuff. And I guess Lamar Jackson's got like a $750,000 workout bonus. If he shows up for
13:56the voluntary stuff and he doesn't show up for it, it's seven 50 dude. I know you make 60 million a
14:01year, but seven 50. And people ask like, why would they even put that into the contract? I saw a lot
14:06of people criticizing Lamar Jackson or wondering whether he should have an agent or something.
14:09Some of it just comes down to, uh, the team has a policy that they're going to put those
14:13workout bonuses in and they're not like, okay, we're just, it's going to be in there.
14:18Yeah. And the player knows it up front and already is just, he's already figured, no,
14:23I'm not going to do that. I personally, I don't, I don't know if there's any amount of money.
14:27I don't think if I were a billionaire, I could turn down the $750,000 to show up at minicamp.
14:33Easy to say when you're not a billionaire. There's a lot of things I say I would do if I
14:37were a billionaire that I, that I know are bogus. I feel like I actually would.
14:43I promise you I would. Well, if I, if I, if I became one from like, there was a time in my
14:47radio career that I had like $170 in my checking account. So just knowing that I experienced that,
14:52I'd be like, I, on principle, I've got to go to this $750,000 thing, especially like a foundation
14:57or something like that. Like you give it to your charity. Yeah. Just give it. Yeah. Yeah.
15:01I don't know, but they're also, I don't want to pay Lamar. Lamar Jackson is the devil or anything
15:04like that. But at the same time, when you put yourself in that, like, okay, they're also making
15:09that much in interest over any given period of time. So I'll give it, listen, I'm giving the
15:15money to charity. I just, whatever. I understand Lamar Jackson's time is more valuable than mine
15:19on an hourly basis. I get that. I totally understand that. You know what he'd say? You
15:23could say, Hey, this $750,000 is money that just goes back into the salary cap. So I'm helping the
15:28team out. That's actually true. Yeah. I am giving you $750,000 extra to just go ahead and, uh,
15:37you know, spend on other players, which is way easier to do. If you play for the Ravens,
15:40a team that makes really good decisions with the salary cap, you're playing for like any
15:44of like 25 other teams. You'd be like, all right, here you go. You know what? That is
15:48a whole nother topic, by the way. I mean, that's when, when guys like Pat Mahomes signed the
15:52deal that they did, which was very team friendly. It's a lot easier to say, look, I'm willing to
15:57take less. If you trust that they're going to do the right thing with the money. Yeah. It's a
16:01but it's like, it's like loaning money to, uh, your, you know, one friend who's a solid
16:07citizen versus your other friend who's a crack head or something. Yeah. Right. Like, okay,
16:11no, I'm just, I don't, I don't trust giving you this money. A lot of crack heads on these
16:15GM streets in the NFL, man. I'm just telling you.
