00:00:00With San Diego and Houston, plus the fact that they've won four of the last five,
00:00:03but the real winner here today, because of everything that happened,
00:00:06the Indianapolis Colts, with the big win over Philadelphia on Thursday night,
00:00:10all of a sudden, they are the team that, should the playoff start today,
00:00:13would be in the playoff picture.
00:00:14And have a long time to rest and get healthy for their next time out.
00:00:18In Tampa, look at what the Bucs did to the Washington Redskins today.
00:00:2024-10, Tampa the final score.
00:00:23Bucs were absolutely pumped up for the Redskins today.
00:00:26Trent Dilfer to wide-open Jackie Harris for 22 yards.
00:00:30His first touchdown of the year, Tampa led 7-0.
00:00:3216-3 Bucs in the third.
00:00:34Dilfer to rookie fullback Mike Allstott, who breaks to the sideline
00:00:38and lunges in to complete a 13-yard touchdown.
00:00:41Two-point conversion, 24-3.
00:00:43North Turner's team continues to spiral downward.
00:00:46The final score, 24-10.
00:00:48The Redskins fall to 8-6.
00:00:49They have lost five of their last six games.
00:00:52Soldier Field in Chicago, late explosion by the Bears,
00:00:55carries them to a 35-9 win over the Rams.
00:00:58Chicago defense dominated the Rams today.
00:01:01Ranked next to last in the league, their offense is.
00:01:03Dave Craig airs it out for Curtis Conway.
00:01:0528-yard touchdown, 7-0.
00:01:07Chicago Craig also scored on a one-yard run.
00:01:10Rashan Salam rushed for 115 yards today.
00:01:12This four-yarder, his second touchdown of the day,
00:01:14he had just one entering the game.
00:01:16And the Bears rolled 35-9,
00:01:19the most points that Chicago has scored this season.
00:01:21In Cincinnati, the Bengals over the Baltimore Ravens today.
00:01:2521-14.
00:01:27Ted Marchabrota's Ravens loses a 4-5 coming in.
00:01:3013-7 Cincinnati in the fourth.
00:01:31After trailing most of the way,
00:01:32Vinny Testaverde avoids the sack.
00:01:34And then to the rookie, Jermaine Lewis,
00:01:36with a seven-yard touchdown.
00:01:38The Ravens take the lead, 14-13.
00:01:40But here comes Jeff Blake and the Bengals.
00:01:42Fakes the handoff to Kajana Carter.
00:01:44One-yard touchdown pass to Tony McGee.
00:01:46Two-point conversion, 21-14.
00:01:48Ravens with a last chance on fourth down.
00:01:50Testaverde to Carwell Gardner, short of a goal line.
00:01:53Sam Shade was there waiting for him.
00:01:55The Ravens miserable in the red zone this afternoon.
00:01:58And in the snow, the Bengals win it by a score of 21-14.
00:02:02The Bengals are 6-8 on the year.
00:02:04In New Orleans, a couple of 2-11 teams doing battle.
00:02:07The Falcons came out winners 31-15, the final score.
00:02:11Our NFL and NBC halftime activities continue.
00:02:17Welcome back to Foxborough.
00:02:25Marv Albert with Sam Weiss.
00:02:27The Patriots with a commanding 20-3 lead on the Jets.
00:02:31Well, let's see.
00:02:31The Jets lost 35-10 the previous two weeks.
00:02:36Today at the half, they're down 20-3.
00:02:39So, right on base.
00:02:42As Vinatieri kicks it off to the combination of Cobb and Van Dyke.
00:02:49And the return by Reggie Cobb.
00:02:52Out across the 25-yard line.
00:02:5627-yard return.
00:02:59Taken down by Larry Wiggum.
00:03:00Take a look at the Coors Light halftime stats.
00:03:04And the numbers certainly reflect what took place.
00:03:08All New England.
00:03:10215 total yards.
00:03:12Twice what the Jets accomplished.
00:03:14And the 17 yards of possession in the first game back in November.
00:03:18The Jets had the ball for 21 minutes in the first half.
00:03:21So, they have reversed what trap they fell into in game.
00:03:24And a first down for Glenn Foley and the Jets.
00:03:30Foley throwing off the mark.
00:03:33Intended for Keyshawn Johnson.
00:03:35It was covered by Todd Collins.
00:03:37You know, patterns like that.
00:03:38It's called a shallow cross by most teams.
00:03:41You're running across the field about five to eight yards.
00:03:43And when you read a zone, your best bet is to turn and to stop.
00:03:47Gear down.
00:03:48And the way you tell the quarterback that you're going to stop is you square your shoulders.
00:03:51You turn your shoulders back to the quarterback.
00:03:53Of course, that did not happen.
00:03:55Foley looked like he expected him to stop.
00:03:58Gear down.
00:03:59It was his lousy throw.
00:04:01Foley now 9 of 18 for 80 yards.
00:04:04Morrell trying to dance his way.
00:04:06Could not hit for the loss.
00:04:08Mark Wheeler, the left defensive tackle.
00:04:11Celebrating the moment.
00:04:12Mark Wheeler in his fifth season out of Texas A&M.
00:04:16In the first half, the New York Jets' possession was an interception punt.
00:04:24They got the field goal.
00:04:25And then it ended the half on down.
00:04:28So they just didn't get it done on offense with a young quarterback.
00:04:31It was a third.
00:04:32And tap.
00:04:34Opening middle of play.
00:04:36Third quarter.
00:04:39Bad snap handled by Foley.
00:04:41You'll see the flags come flying.
00:04:45The Patriots were moving quick.
00:04:47And I think they caused the offense.
00:04:48It wants somebody on the offensive line to flinch.
00:04:52False start.
00:04:54Number 70.
00:04:55Offense.
00:04:56Moving prior to the snap.
00:04:58It's a five-yard penalty.
00:04:59Third down.
00:05:00That's the right guard.
00:05:01Matt O'Dwyer.
00:05:04Called on the penalty.
00:05:06Seven defensive backs now come into the ballgame.
00:05:09Anticipating the throw.
00:05:11Third and long.
00:05:12Matt O'Dwyer.
00:05:13I'll tell you, Matt O'Dwyer is one of those guys that you want on your team.
00:05:16Because he is full speed all the time.
00:05:19It's a third.
00:05:21And 15.
00:05:22Back at the 25-yard line.
00:05:24And Foley's pass.
00:05:26A diving attempt.
00:05:28A flag is thrown.
00:05:30Keyshawn Johnson with a terrific effort.
00:05:34And a penalty marker down.
00:05:35Ty Law on the coverage.
00:05:37This will be interesting because both of them were jockeying,
00:05:40almost trying to gain their balance by holding on to the other guy.
00:05:43It's going to be the opinion of the officials as to who was fouling who on this one.
00:05:49That was a very, very good catch, though.
00:05:51One-handed by Keyshawn Johnson, regardless of the foul.
00:05:58Pass interference.
00:06:00Number 24 defense.
00:06:02That penalty is declined.
00:06:03Takes Rizzotto to play.
00:06:05First down.
00:06:06So, it's a 20-yard advance on the catch by Keyshawn Johnson.
00:06:11Ty Law was called for the interference that was declined.
00:06:16Most of the time, these kind of throws are thrown back behind the receiver.
00:06:20In other words, they want him to run up the field and then run back down the sideline.
00:06:23And with the field the way it is, he just couldn't get himself underway.
00:06:25That's a defense that anticipated the snap count.
00:06:41I thought they were going to call all sides on the Patriots on this one, but here they come.
00:06:44You can see them.
00:06:45They didn't quite leave before the ball, but they could read the rhythm of the quarterback.
00:06:49They could anticipate the snap.
00:06:51That's how they get the jump on him.
00:06:52You know what really happens there is the defense is moving before the offense comes out of their three-point stance.
00:06:59They have no chance.
00:07:01The quarterback, young quarterbacks, don't do it.
00:07:02Sometimes they have to mix the count up.
00:07:04Patriots with their third sack of the day.
00:07:08First of the year for Malloy.
00:07:10And here is Foley fighting Johnson, but immediately rocked by the middle linebacker.
00:07:17Ted Johnson with the tackle on Keyshawn Johnson.
00:07:21Second down and long.
00:07:23They're playing a zone, letting everything happen in front of them.
00:07:25Now watch Keyshawn this time.
00:07:26You see him turn around.
00:07:27See his shoulders pretty well square up right there.
00:07:30He should stop when he squares his shoulders because the quarterback doesn't know if he's going to keep going.
00:07:34He obviously can't run at the same speed when he's turned halfway that way.
00:07:38Well, Keyshawn with five catches for 62 yards.
00:07:43Third and ten for the Jets.
00:07:45And Foley's pass was picked off and then dropped.
00:07:53Looks like Willie McGinnis had a shot at it.
00:07:56It is ruled incomplete.
00:07:59Immediately ruled that one incomplete.
00:08:00There was no question in the minds of the officials.
00:08:02Four rushing defensive linemen all zoned behind it.
00:08:06Shotgun snap.
00:08:06Nobody back there with Foley.
00:08:08He's going to throw the ball.
00:08:09Just puts it right into the arms of Willie McGinnis who just can't hold on to it long enough.
00:08:14That's the old rule.
00:08:16Put the ball away before you run.
00:08:17So, Brian Hansen with his second, actually his third punt.
00:08:27One of them ended up where, off the bad snap, he had a run for his life.
00:08:33Megan again with the punt.
00:08:36Second time that that has occurred is a 44-yard punt.
00:08:41And the Patriots back to the offense when we return.
00:08:4412-21 remaining in the third quarter here in Foxborough.
00:08:52Patriots 20 and the Jets 3.
00:08:55And New England starts out from its 21-yard line.
00:09:03That's a long look and then hit Martin.
00:09:06But Curtis Martin trapped back behind the line.
00:09:09Rick Hamilton involved on the stop.
00:09:11And it's a loss on the play.
00:09:12They actually came out with four wide receivers that time on first down.
00:09:16The Patriots in their possessions.
00:09:18Remember, we talked about their first meeting that the Patriots fumbled the ball once through two interceptions
00:09:23and punted in their first four.
00:09:26You can see their first four were much more successful along with a fifth field goal this time.
00:09:31That earlier meeting at the Meadowlands four weeks ago.
00:09:35And the Patriots beat the Jets 31-27 after trailing 21-0 at one point in the first half.
00:09:43Letso coming up short.
00:09:45Sam Gass, the intended receiver, crowd looking for a penalty, and it is thrown.
00:09:51Crowd wanted interference on Bobby Houston.
00:09:57He's grabbing that right knee.
00:09:59You hate to see anybody reach for that particular part of their body because it's the most vulnerable part of a football player.
00:10:08He's throwing back.
00:10:09He shouldn't throw it back across his body anyway, but you can see he's got his knee twisted up underneath plus the split.
00:10:17That one, you won't know for a while how serious that one might be.
00:10:23Sam Gass is one of those guys that fits Bill Parcells' description of a fullback.
00:10:27Catch and block.
00:10:28He can do that.
00:10:29Bill Parcells was talking about him as being one of those guys that was wasting a lot of energy.
00:10:33It took him two or three years to calm him down to where he did just that catch and pass.
00:10:39Said he never stopped until he heard glass before.
00:10:42I guess that means until he heard full contact.
00:10:44Yes.
00:10:45It is a first and ten on the interference penalty.
00:10:51And here's Barton.
00:10:53It is Barton out to the 30, stopped by Marvin Jones.
00:10:56Sam Gass has had a terrific season as a blocker and a pass receiver.
00:11:02Bill Parcells saying that he's come such a long way that he learned to play the game in a more relaxed manner.
00:11:08He felt that last year he was too much full speed.
00:11:13You know, I'm talking to Drew Bledsoe.
00:11:15I asked him about Gass.
00:11:16And everybody on the team likes him, of course.
00:11:19See, when he got a chance to get back on the kickoff team to run into that wedge,
00:11:23he just came back all excited again because he likes to do that.
00:11:26But Bill's trying to measure that, not to get him into the excitable part too much.
00:11:30Second down and six.
00:11:32One-handed catch by Glenn.
00:11:36Terry Glenn covered by Aaron Glenn.
00:11:38That's the third catch of the game.
00:11:41For Glenn, let's see where they spot it.
00:11:43It is right at the marker.
00:11:45Things have really turned around for Terry Glenn, who had the injury problem earlier in the season.
00:11:57He was a controversial first-round selection.
00:11:59It was clear that Bill Parcells preferred a defensive player.
00:12:03It was not his pick.
00:12:04And, Bill, a little slow in coming around in terms of accepting the skills of Glenn,
00:12:11who coming into today with, well, that is updated, 70 catches in all,
00:12:16trailing Earl Cooper of the San Francisco 49ers,
00:12:19who holds the all-time record for rookie receptions.
00:12:23That was back in 1980.
00:12:25And, Sal, I believe you were a member of that 49er stat.
00:12:29Well, I worked for the passing game on with Bill and Matthews the running game.
00:12:32You know, another telling stat with Terry, not only 70 receptions,
00:12:36but coming into this game, he was the target on 124 throws.
00:12:39That means they're going to him a lot as well.
00:12:41It is a throw down.
00:12:43And just inches away from the first down.
00:12:46So, Bledsoe looks to pick it up on the sneak.
00:12:49This will be strictly the spot of the official right there.
00:12:53Did he get enough movement?
00:12:54And you're really not looking at the ball carrier, the quarterback.
00:12:57You're looking at the offensive line versus the defensive line.
00:12:59If there's any movement, they usually give it to you.
00:13:01And the word on Sam Gash.
00:13:04Sprained left knee, and he's out the rest of the game.
00:13:09You see hobbling along the sideline.
00:13:13Sprained knee is a very generic term.
00:13:14That could be a very minor injury.
00:13:16Could be something very serious.
00:13:18Well, New England did pick up the first down on the quarterback's sneak.
00:13:22A first down of the 36-yard line.
00:13:25Play action.
00:13:27And looks out of the sideline.
00:13:29Completes.
00:13:30Grant runs it out.
00:13:32Making the catch in front of Gary Jones.
00:13:36And that particular style of play is called a waggle pass or a bootleg.
00:13:40The quarterback is going to go to the right,
00:13:42and then he's going to throw the ball back to the left.
00:13:44And here he goes back to the right.
00:13:45He looks for a moment,
00:13:46and then he throws back pre-designed all the way back to the other side.
00:13:51You like to see those passes because what you're getting is flow from the defense,
00:13:55and you throw it back across the drain.
00:13:56And it's good for 25 yards.
00:13:59So it's been another splendid day for Drew Bledsoe.
00:14:03He cuts off what Bledsoe felt was perhaps his best performance of the season last week,
00:14:12last Sunday night against the San Diego Chargers.
00:14:14And look out.
00:14:17Extracurricular activity with the penalty marker thrown.
00:14:20It's Hugh Douglas involved.
00:14:23Bruce Armstrong wasn't going to let that one pass either.
00:14:27Defending his quarterback.
00:14:28The whistle did blow.
00:14:30The play was over.
00:14:33And then Hugh Douglas came back and made a little swat at the ball.
00:14:38You know where that's dangerous is.
00:14:40You got your hand on that ball.
00:14:41You can jam a finger in a second on that one because you're not expecting it.
00:14:46You're not protecting it.
00:14:47Your hand or protecting yourself against a blow.
00:14:50And the officials want to talk about this one because this one was stopped.
00:14:56So it's an offensive penalty to begin with.
00:14:58They want to see what the penalty should be.
00:15:02Ball starts.
00:15:03Number 11.
00:15:05Pulling out without the ball.
00:15:07Five-yard penalty.
00:15:08First down.
00:15:12Quarterback sometimes forgets the snap count himself.
00:15:14See him pull away from it.
00:15:15When he moves like that,
00:15:17that's the same as an offensive lineman or illegal motion.
00:15:22Actually, that wasn't Hugh Douglas.
00:15:24That was Marv Washington who came in there and made the swat at the ball.
00:15:28They take it by Armstrong.
00:15:30It was the first and 15 of the 44-yard line.
00:15:34A floating pass for Keith Byers.
00:15:37That's his first catch of the day.
00:15:39And hauled out by Victor Green.
00:15:42And Keith Byers told me the other day,
00:15:44he said, December is when you separate the pretenders from the contenders.
00:15:49And plays like this,
00:15:51not just the catch,
00:15:52but holding on to it after the catch like that.
00:15:54That's part of the determination.
