00:00At this time, it is my pleasure to introduce to you the next head coach of the Miami Dolphins.
00:27And the new year began dramatically in Miami.
00:32Demanding and dynamic Jimmy Johnson, twice a Super Bowl winner with the Dallas Cowboys,
00:38returning to Miami, replacing the winningest coach in NFL history, Don Shula.
00:44The Jimmy Johnson era begins today on a hot, humid Southern Florida Sunday afternoon.
00:50Temperature over 100 degrees on the field.
00:53Hello, everyone, and welcome to the start of a new season with Phil Simms and Paul McGuire.
00:57And Jimmy Johnson brings to the NFL a collegiate spirit.
01:01Yeah, he really does.
01:02And I think it's evident in the five running backs that are dressed for this ballgame.
01:06Three of the running backs are rookies, and two of them are going to be starting.
01:09Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Stanley Pritchett.
01:11And, you know, you talk about the atmosphere in this camp.
01:13We asked Dan Marino yesterday, Dan, what was this camp truly like?
01:16He said, did you see the movie Full Metal Jacket?
01:19That's it.
01:19I have a feeling New England, it was the same Phil Simms, because Bill Parcells, in talking with us last night,
01:25looked at Phil and said, Sims, it's going to be the way it used to be around here.
01:29Oh, and that means for those players, that means he's going to go back to being the way he used to be.
01:33Mean, ornery, and tough.
01:35And Bill Parcells is all about attitude.
01:37That's the reason he's been successful in this league.
01:40So far this preseason, his team has shown that attitude.
01:43And last year, many times he said to us, I have no flag bearers, in other words, leaders on the team.
01:48This year, he has them on both sides of the ball.
01:51So a matchup of coaches today.
01:52In the last ten years, they represent four Super Bowl championships, Johnson and Parcells.
01:58First, to our New York studios.
02:07Hi, everyone.
02:08Welcome back to our studio here in New York.
02:09Let's quickly run through the scores of the early games today in the National Football League,
02:13beginning with the game in Baltimore.
02:15And the Ravens, they make it a winner today.
02:1819-14 is the final score, despite two Billy Joe Hobart to Tim Brown touchdown passes.
02:24In Jacksonville, the Jaguars beating up on the Pittsburgh Steelers today, 24-9.
02:29The bad news for the Steelers, a serious knee injury suffered by linebacker Greg Lloyd.
02:34In Indianapolis, the Colts beat the Cardinals today, 20-13.
02:38Jim Harbaugh temporarily knocked out of the game in the first half with a bruised right hand,
02:43but he finds rookie receiver Marvin Harrison for a 35-yard touchdown pass.
02:47Harrison's first in the NFL, Harbaugh's second of the game.
02:51The Colts start their season with a win.
02:53The final was 20-13.
02:55In Houston, the Oilers trailing the Kansas City Chiefs in the final moments, 20-19.
03:00In Washington, the Eagles beat the Redskins for the eighth straight time, 17-14.
03:05In St. Louis, that game down to the final moments, and the Rams are leading the Cincinnati Bengals, 23-16.
03:13Lawrence Phillips has scored two touchdowns for St. Louis today.
03:16In Minnesota, the Vikings lost Warren Moon to an ankle injury earlier.
03:20That game is tied at 10 in the fourth.
03:22And Carolina, all over the Atlanta Falcons today, 26-6.
03:27We'll send you back to Miami.
03:27Welcome back to Miami.
03:28I'm Jim Gray.
03:29Well, a short time ago, I spoke to Jimmy Johnson, and he said that he really had very little to say to his team in his pregame speech.
03:35He said he emphasized two points.
03:36Simply have fun and relax.
03:38He didn't want to have any more because he didn't want to clutter their minds on game day.
03:41But there have been several messages in the Dolphin locker room all week long.
03:45Up on the bulletin board, Jimmy Johnson has assembled.
03:48There is one main message.
03:49Get to the Patriots' $6 million man, Drew Bledsoe.
03:52Joe Parcells, they met four times in the NFC.
03:56Parcells won all four games.
03:58Giants against the Cowboys.
04:00Joe Nedney, the left-footed new kicker for Miami, sends it on its way.
04:05And this NFL season begins in Miami.
04:10Dave Meggett with a return.
04:12The former Giant breaks loose at the 30.
04:14Nedney gets a piece of him and drags it out of bounds at the 48-yard line.
04:19And Meggett with a sterling return, 41 yards.
04:26One of the reasons Jimmy Johnson kept Joe Nedney is he's supposed to kick that ball in the end zone.
04:32He didn't want to put his defense in tough position.
04:35And right there you can see the big hole for Dave Meggett.
04:38The Miami Dolphins probably expecting that ball to be kicked in the end zone.
04:42Maybe we're a little surprised.
04:44Joe Parcells looks at Drew Bledsoe.
04:47So, Bledsoe from Washington State in his fourth year.
04:51A critical season, says Parcells, about Bledsoe's performance.
04:54And before the snap movement on the forward wall, flags are down.
05:00Bowens and Gardner make the tackle as they sort out the penalty.
05:03Let's take a look at the New England Patriot offense.
05:08Offside.
05:09Referee today is Jerry Austin.
05:11Bruce Armstrong, the pro bowler, with Roberts, Wallabaugh, Cratch, and Lane, the forward wall.
05:18Bledsoe with Curtis Martin, who led the AFC in rushing last year as a rookie.
05:22Sam Gash is the blocker.
05:23Sean Jefferson, the former charger, at one wide out.
05:26Wilmore, the other, and Ben Coates, the all-pro, tied in.
05:33Penalty marked off to the 47-yard line.
05:36Offside Miami.
05:38Bledsoe throws incomplete as receiver had fallen down.
05:42Daniel Stubbs was in the backfield for the defensive play for Miami.
05:47Wilmore, the intended receiver.
05:49Armstrong, Gardner.
05:50He's the rookie from Bela, the number one pick.
05:52Tim Bowens and Daniel Stubbs.
05:54All number one picks except for Stubbs.
05:56He was a second pick of the 49ers.
05:58Hollier, rookie Zach Thomas from Texas Tech in the middle.
06:01Chris Singleton, the backers.
06:02Buckley and Jackson are the corners.
06:04Veterans Oliver and Atkins at safety.
06:08Second down and five.
06:11First down for Curtis Martin, and he slips down at the 43-yard line,
06:16covered there by Terrell Buckley.
06:18Martin, who last year rushed for 1,487 yards.
06:23You know, Phil talked about Deadly kicking off,
06:25and I'm going to just go back for a second,
06:26because Jimmy Johnson said to us, Dick, he said,
06:28we cannot afford to have anybody start at their 35-yard line
06:33and expect to beat anybody with this young football team.
06:36That's the reason he traded Pete Stoyanovich,
06:39the popular kicker here for many years, to Kansas City.
06:42Third and short.
06:46Flag down.
06:47Burke was in motion, the tight end,
06:48and that usually means illegal motion against the offense.
06:53Before the ball was snapped, ball started.
07:00Number 83.
07:02Five yards, and it's still third down.
07:06Oh, it'll be third down and six for Bill Parcells,
07:10now in his fourth year in New England.
07:13You know, Phil, it's got to drive a coach nuts,
07:15even a quarterback.
07:16I mean, here you are, you've got third in a little bit,
07:19and you've got a wide receiver that goes in motion.
07:21I mean, it's crazy.
07:24Three wide receivers, and Bledsoe out of the shotgun.
07:27That's been added to the New England offense this year.
07:30Good protection.
07:32He throws complete at the 38-yard line,
07:34as Ben Coates, the tight end,
07:37spears it, and a first down New England.
07:40As we welcome those of you who have seen
07:41the Pittsburgh Steelers and Jacksonville,
07:45and the Jaguars with a 24-9 win
07:48against the defending AFC champions.
07:51Here in Miami, the last play is this,
07:54from the opening kickoff,
07:55the New England Patriots getting a third and sixth completion.
07:58And Bledsoe to Ben Coates,
08:0011 yards in the play, first down at the Miami 37.
08:06Lag down with him here at the Dolphins offside,
08:08slipping in the backfield as Curtis Martin,
08:11as Darryl Gardner in on the play.
08:14Dick, two things that I saw in that play right there.
08:17One, Drew Bledsoe drawing him off sides.
08:19He's done that all preseason.
08:21Something they must have worked on.
08:22His snap count has been excellent.
08:24Offside, on the defense, the nose tackle.
08:28Five yards, repeat first down.
08:31Is that Bowen's number 95?
08:33Yes, it is.
08:33And also the other thing, watch him right here,
08:35you'll watch Drew Bledsoe.
08:36Seen flinch right there?
08:38Tim Bowen's heard the voice real hard,
08:41and he jumps off sides.
08:42But the other four plays so far,
08:45and I've seen three players slip down the field.
08:47It's hard, but the top surface is wet.
08:50First and five, it was Gardner who actually leaned offside.
08:53This is Curtis Martin.
08:55He gets very little trying to slash off the left side.
08:58Zach Thomas in on the tackle.
09:03You know, Jimmy Johnson said to this team, Dick,
09:05let's have fun.
09:06I mean, all the nervousness, I mean, all the heat is on me.
09:08I'm the new guy here on the block, not you guys.
09:11Go out and have some fun.
09:12These guys are making an awful lot of mental mistakes.
09:14But again, when you start at the beginning
09:16about the collegiate atmosphere,
09:17there are a lot of new faces on this football team.
09:20There are 23 new members of this Miami team
09:24that weren't with Don Shula last year.
09:26Oh, you talk about Oliver,
09:37Lewis Oliver reading the play and filling the hole.
09:41And this is what safeties are supposed to do.
09:43Number 25 is Lewis Oliver.
09:45Now watch on the bottom of your screen.
09:47You're going to see him come into play.
09:49Martin's right there, but Oliver just beats everybody.
09:51There's nobody there to block him.
09:53And he hits him for a loss, actually, of a yard.
09:59Third down, call it five.
10:01Oliver, the veteran from Florida.
10:06Bledsoe from the shotgun.
10:11And it's taken by Oliver.
10:13He has a close pass.
10:16Bledsoe to beat.
10:17And he's dragged down at the 10-yard line.
10:23Oh, he gets through for a touchdown.
10:27Sean Hill.
10:31And the lateral from Oliver.
10:36Oh, my.
10:37We talked about a collegiate play.
10:40The interception by Oliver.
10:41And that being caught from behind off the Sean Hill for the score.
10:5460 yards of the 70 to Oliver.
10:57The final 10 to Sean Hill.
10:59Those aren't boos.
11:10That's Lou for Lou.
11:12Oliver.
11:13Netany's try for point.
11:15On kids hold.
11:16And the Dolphins strike on the interception for a touchdown and lead 7 to nothing.
11:25Lewis Oliver standing back there.
11:27Nobody to cover.
11:28All he does is watch Drew Bledsoe.
11:30He looks left all the way.
11:32Reads it.
11:32Steps in front of the receiver.
11:34Easy interception.
11:35Big mistake by Drew Bledsoe.
11:48Welcome back to Miami.
11:49Especially those of you who have watched the Kansas City Chiefs.
11:52He got a 2019 win over the Houston Oilers here.
11:56Miami has scored on a pass interception and fumble.
12:00Lewis Oliver and Sean Hill combining on a 70-yard score with the interception.
12:05Picking off Drew Bledsoe.
12:07Dan Marino on the Miami offense on the field for the first time in the game.
12:11A pair of rookie running backs behind Marino.
12:13And Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, the third-round pick from UCLA, gets the call and pick up a four.
12:20Here is the offensive line for Miami.
12:24Webb, the pro bowler.
12:26And Sims, also a pro bowler.
12:27Ruddy Gray and James Brown acquired free agent from the Jets.
12:31Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, UCLA.
12:33Stanley Pritchett, a rookie from South Carolina.
12:36First time they've ever started a season.
12:38Two rookies in the 30 years in Miami.
12:41Second down, six.
12:47Jabbar, twisted down at the 33.
12:51And a flag goes down.
12:52A late hit, apparently.
12:54Ricky Reynolds made the contact.
12:57And then Mike Jones also in on the play, perhaps late.
13:02Mike Jones comes in late and just throws a shoulder.
13:04Personal foul.
13:06Unnecessary roughness.
13:07Number 96 of the defense.
13:0915 yards.
13:10First down.
13:11This is a good call.
13:12So, I mean, the guy is down.
13:14You see him down.
13:15And you can avoid it.
13:15That's why they call the play.
13:17Now, watch Jones.
13:18Here he comes in.
13:19The man is down.
13:19And now you hit him with a shoulder.
13:21He could have avoided it.
13:22That's why they threw the flag.
13:23It's an excellent call.
13:24Bill Parcells says, I don't want a dumb team.
13:26And so far here in the first quarter, we've seen a couple dumb plays.
13:30We've seen some dumbness.
13:31Some dumbness.
13:3215 yards out to the 48-yard line.
13:36The coaches in all sport will put up with a certain amount of physical errors.
13:39But mental errors are unforgivable.
13:43First down at the 48 for Marina.
13:46I've yet to throw a pass.
13:49Here he goes.
13:50Here he goes.
13:51A play action complete to McDuffie.
13:53And McDuffie, a first down at the 39-yard line.
13:58Ty Law made the tackle.
13:5914 yards on the play.
14:05Well, the New England defense believes their defensive backs are better cover guys.
14:09So right here is a blitz against the Miami offense.
14:12You can see Ty Law trying to cover O.J. McDuffie coming across the field.
14:16Tough assignment right there.
14:17You know, the thing about it is that Marino told us, and it's been in the newspaper,
14:20my go-to guy is going to be O.J. McDuffie.
14:23I mean, there are no secrets to who he's going to look at first.
14:25You know, that relationship developed late last season.
14:28McDuffie had 11 catches in the playoffs.
14:30And Will Jamal showing the kind of explosive start that gained him more than 1,400 yards at UCLA last year.
14:4012 on that play.
14:42What a great block by Pritchett, the rookie.
14:45Now, watch this block right in the center of the screen.
14:49There's Pritchett, comes down, makes the block, and they're off and running.
14:52I mean, that's outstanding.
14:53That's Wheeler.
14:53Mark Wheeler, number 97, was there.
14:55But Pritchett just took him out.
14:57Leading 7-0.
14:58Miami a first down at the Patriot 26-yard line.
15:02Pritchett is 232 pounds.
15:04Fourth-round pick from South Carolina.
15:13Jabbar to the 23-yard line.
15:15A chance now to introduce the men in blue on defense.
15:18The Patriots line up this way.
15:204-3 defense.
15:22First time in 22 years they've not been in a 3-4.
15:24Devin Wyman is the 300-pound rookie from Kentucky State.
15:28Willie McGinnis had 11 sacks last year.
15:31Saab for the injured slate.
15:32Johnson and Brown.
15:34Brown, the former Buffalo Bill.
15:36The backers.
15:36Law and Reynolds at the corners.
15:38Terry Clay.
15:39Terry Ray and Willie Clay.
15:40Clay had eight interceptions at Detroit last year.
15:44Picked up as a free agent.
15:45You saw Bill Belichick, the former Cleveland Browns head coach,
15:48has rejoined Bill Parcells.
15:52Second down play for Marino.
15:54Out of the backfield.
15:56And it's Stanley Pritchett.
15:57Twisted down at the 20.
15:58Shy of a first down.
15:59Dwayne Saab made the tackle on this first day of the NFL regular season.
16:06You look at the other scores and the Baltimore Ravens open with a win against the Oakland Raiders.
16:11Surprising Jacksonville.
16:14Maybe there'll be a quarterback change in Pittsburgh.
16:17Indianapolis came within a play of going to the Super Bowl.
16:20They start the new year with a win.
16:22Jairus McPhail and other rookies from East Carolina.
16:25And maybe the fastest player on the Miami team.
16:28Number 32 replaces Abdul-Jabbar.
16:31As Marino, third down and four.
16:35Gets it to McPhail.
16:36And he's denied the first down at the 17-yard line.
16:39A yard short, it would appear.
16:42As Willie McGinnis and Mike Jones make the stop.
16:44On comes the field goal unit.
16:46Well, so far, seven offensive plays.
16:48I think that's five runs.
16:50And you better believe the Miami Dolphins are going to commit to this running game.
16:54And Friday, I got a chance to watch their practice.
16:56What if I could see?
16:57Usually on Fridays, you go out there, and it's almost all passing, trying to get it choreographed and ready.
17:02The Miami Dolphins, it was almost all running on Friday's practice.
17:06That's a big surprise.
17:07There's nobody in the league does that on Friday afternoons.
17:1135-yard attempt.
17:12Kidd holding for Medney.
17:15The new field goal.
17:16Pick a four-line.
17:18And Medney drills it.
17:2210-0 Dolphins.
17:24You're watching the NFL on NBC.
17:29Welcome back.
17:3010-0 Miami.
17:31Drew Bledsoe told us yesterday, he said it was a long offseason,
17:34waiting to erase the bad memories of a definite off-year for him.
17:40He waits another turn.
17:41One for six today.
17:42High kick by Medney.
17:44Taken by Megan.
17:45Megan, seven returns for touchdowns in his career.
17:49Takes it to the 26-yard line.
17:51Here comes Drew Bledsoe.
17:53Well, Drew Bledsoe had a tough start so far today.
17:56He's going to rely on some of the things he learned this offseason.
17:59Footwork.
18:00Learning to throw over the top of defenders.
18:03Moving his feet when there's pressure around him in the pocket.
18:06And maybe all this training this past offseason will come in play right here.
18:11Because as a quarterback, you get off to a bad start.
18:14Sometimes it's hard to overcome that.
18:16And this is going to be a tough situation for him to overcome.
18:19But Dick yesterday, he looked at us with a whole lot of confidence.
18:22We talked to him last year.
18:23He was kind of down.
18:24But he looked pretty good yesterday.
18:25Down was yesterday.
18:27Hands off to Curtis Martin.
18:29Misdirection.
18:30And Martin trying to get outside.
18:31Gets to the 33-yard line before Zach Thomas can make the tackle.
18:36Let's go to New York.
18:39All right, Dick.
18:40At Mile High Stadium in Denver, the Broncos get on the board first against the New York Jets.
18:45John Elway to his favorite target, Shannon Sharp.
18:48From 13 yards out, another field goal makes it a 10-0 Denver lead over the Jets.
18:55That is in the first quarter.
18:57Dick.
18:57Wasting no time against the Jets.
19:01Thank you, Greg.
19:01Up, up, up, up.
19:03Here, second down and four.
19:05Martin.
19:06To the 35-36-yard line before Gardner, the rookie.
19:11And Thomas, another rookie in that Miami defense, can collaborate on the stop.
19:15Zach Thomas, number 54.
19:17He was picked in the fifth round.
19:19This is his 23rd birthday today.
19:23He said, I've been playing linebacker since the third grade in White Deer, Texas.
19:27Yeah, I'll tell you.
19:28We asked him who were his heroes at linebacker.
19:32And, of course, he said Sam Mills and Mike Singletary.
19:36Two other.
19:37Little guys.
19:38Yeah, little guys.
19:39He's not real little.
19:40Look at the neck on this guy.
19:41But he's only 5'11".
19:43And usually you get demerits for that height in the NFL.
19:46Well, he did.
19:47That's why he was chosen in the later rounds in the draft.
19:49But the one thing everybody said about him coming out of the college and going into the draft,
19:54he makes a lot of plays.
19:55But it's amazing how you get knocked down in this league because you don't hit that certain height or weight.
20:00I told Bledsoe yesterday, I said, he knocks down one of your passes.
20:03We're going to replay it a half a dozen times.
20:04That's right.
20:05First down for the Patriots on the measurement.
20:10And Coach lined up outside and that brought in motion as they try to free him up at Bledsoe.
20:16Swallowed at the 30.
20:17And Zach Thomas was in on the tackle.
20:22Darryl Gardner, the rookie, got a piece of him as well.
20:26Zach Thomas.
20:28Well, Zach Thomas, the one thing he has is just great instincts.
20:32Knows how to get to where the ball is.
20:34And you see him working on the center.
20:37Gets around Dave Wollabaugh.
20:38Keeps hustling.
20:39And gets to the quarterback.
20:41That's the key to this whole thing.
20:42Watch his legs.
20:43His legs never stop moving.
20:44He's moving around Wollabaugh.
20:46He gets knocked off his feet a little bit.
20:47But he gets right back in and makes the play.
20:51Second down.
20:53And 17.
20:57Little short screen.
20:59And Megan to the 37-yard line.
21:02Where Lewis Oliver and Zach Thomas make the tackle.
21:05Let's go down to Jim Gray.
21:06Whoops.
21:07All right, Dick.
21:08Well, it's very hot down here on the field.
21:09As you pointed out, 104 degrees plus 40% humidity.
21:12Well, the Dolphin players have all been ordered on defense by Kevin O'Neal, their trainer, and their coaching staff.
21:17You must have two glasses of water every time you come off the field.
21:20It's not an option.
21:21We don't want any dehydration.
21:23Dick.
21:24All right, Jim.
21:25It is quite hot in the sun.
21:29Third down seven.
21:30Let's go.
21:31Goes to the gun.
21:32Incomplete.
21:40Well covered with Sean Jefferson.
21:41A flag.
21:42A late flag is thrown.
21:45There you go.
21:45Base of pass interference here.
21:50Extra defensive backs in for Jimmy Johnson.
21:53And he said that ball was uncatchable.
21:55Well, that's, I think it's J.B. Brown was the guy that they called, number 37.
22:05He's not waving to a tall guy.
22:08That's right.
22:09He's not talking about his hair either right here.
22:12I want to be 6'8".
22:13But you know what?
22:14It wasn't, you know, this, it should be a penalty.
22:18Drew Bledsoe threw the ball high because the receiver was being held, and he just kind of threw it away.
22:24Defensive pass interference.
22:25Number 37.
22:27Automatic first down.
22:30J.B. Brown, who lost his cornerback starting job to Calvin Jackson.
22:33He's the 6th defensive back.
22:35Now watch it, baby.
22:36Right there is his defense.
22:37That's actually holding right there.
22:38Well, he has his hands 10 on the receiver 10 yards down the field, and that is a definite penalty.
22:43Remember, 5 yards.
22:45After 5, you can't.
22:49And we welcome those of you who have watched the Bengals and the St. Louis Rams.
22:54Rams winning 26-16.
22:56DeKemburg.
22:57Paul LeBarco sends in Miami.
23:00Oh, Ben Coates, who rarely drops a ball.
23:02Has that one go off his chest?
23:04Incomplete.
23:05The Miami Dolphins lead here 10-0 on a striking interception touchdown early
23:11as Louis Oliver and Sean Hill combined on a 70-yard play.
23:16Dick, you're a little low.
23:16Watch how this ball hits him in the head.
23:18Doink.
23:21That's what you call looking it in, isn't it, Phil?
23:22But watch him right here.
23:23Just at the last second, he's turning his head to look for where the defensive back is coming towards him.
23:28Almost stuck it in his ear.
23:29That's a sin as a receiver.
23:31Dolphins got their other points.
23:32That's a 34-yard field goal by Nedney.
23:36Patriots second down and 10.
23:37Play action.
23:38But it's the Sean Jefferson.
23:41Jefferson, who played the last several years with the San Diego Chargers, near a first down at the Miami 42.
23:46Well, it's a good thing you have a nice, strong arm as a quarterback.
23:53And right here, Drew Bledsoe, Sean Jefferson does a good job of driving the defensive back Calvin Jackson off
23:59and comes back and goes towards the football.
24:03Jackson getting up slowly.
24:05Second-year corner from Auburn.
24:07You know, we were watching these guys warm up, so you looked at it, and the one thing you said before this game even started
24:13and, of course, during the week was how small the corners are in Miami.
24:18And when you've got a guy like Sean Jefferson, I mean, you've got to send these guys downfield.
24:22But the one thing we've seen so far is how aggressive they are in attacking the football and the receiver.
24:30Jackson making the tackle on Jefferson and gets twisted underneath on the play.
24:48This is the NFL on NBC.
24:54Welcome back.
24:55Calvin Jackson able to leave the field under his own power.
24:57This is Curtis Martin on the first down.
25:00And Martin bumped out of bounds by J.B. Brown, who has replaced Jackson at the right corner.
25:05Zach Thomas also in on the play as they look at Calvin Jackson.
25:09Yeah, but, you know, he walked off the field.
25:10But watch, you can tell the pain.
25:11Watch when they see him.
25:12They just turned his knee a little bit, and he jumped.
25:15But the good news is he did walk off the field.
25:18They're looking at it.
25:18J.B. Brown will take over.
25:23Jackson caught the eye of new coach Jimmy Johnson and outplayed J.B. Brown in the preseason.
25:30Second down and seven for Bledsoe and the Patriots.
25:32The trail, 10 to nothing.
25:35Good protection.
25:37Comes him off to Sean Jefferson and Sean Jotich in the play.
25:41A gain of about three and a half.
25:43Chris Singleton led the charge.
25:45Let's go to Greg Gumbel in New York.
25:46All right, Dick, at San Diego, the Chargers have taken the lead.
25:52Stan Humphrey, from two yards out, finds Tony Martin after a little bit of a scramble.
25:57All alone in the end zone with the extra point.
25:59The Chargers in the lead over the Seahawks, 7-0 in the first.
26:02Dick?
26:04All right, Greg.
26:06Here in hot and fortunately not too humid.
26:0940% humidity.
26:10Miami, the temperature well over 100 degrees down on the field.
26:15Third and four.
26:19Now, the Dolphins were offside.
26:21Were they drawn?
26:22Flags fly.
26:26And the signal is against Miami.
26:28Daniel Stubbs appeared to be the man who jumped first,
26:31and that would give New England a first down.
26:34I think Stubbs, first of all, lined up offside.
26:36Then he got himself in that zone he couldn't get out of.
26:38Number 96 of the defense.
26:40See, as long as he doesn't touch anybody, they will allow the play to go.
26:44You'll see him on the bottom here, Stubbs.
26:45You see now he's across the line.
26:47He's gone.
26:48Stubbs is there.
26:49They also had some movement by Gardner.
26:51Yeah, Darrell Gardner moved.
26:52That's what made Stubbs jump, I think.
26:54He saw his teammate move, so he figures,
26:56well, I need a good jump right here to get to the quarterback.
26:59Stubbs, one of many former Miami Hurricanes
27:01who linked to Jimmy Johnson's collegiate days.
27:05They're not a brother of the Dolphins.
27:08Let's all wide open on the sidelines to Jefferson.
27:12A good move by Jefferson, and then he's hammered at the 16.
27:16Another first down for New England, 15 on the play.
27:20Did you see what Jefferson did to J.B. Brown?
27:22I mean, he just left him, Phil.
27:24Well, that's called respect, and Sean Jefferson is the speediest wide receivers
27:28the New England Patriots have, and right there, just a good move up the field.
27:31This is what I like.
27:32He catches it, and then turns it back up inside and gets that extra yardage.
27:36Lewis Oliver with the tackle.
27:38First down, they mark progress to the 15-yard line.
27:41Final seconds of the opening quarter.
27:43Dolphins lead 10-0.
27:46Deepest penetration by the Patriots at the Miami 15.
27:50Curtis Martin shreds a couple of tackles, gains about three before Dwight Hollier can bring him down.
27:57Just eight seconds remaining in this opening quarter,
28:04and this Miami crowd brought to its feet on a 70-yard interception for a touchdown.
28:09Dolphins lead 10-0.
28:19If you're a big man and you have to run down the field today,
28:22look at Ben Coates, number 87, running down there.
28:25It is hot on that field, and he is trying to get it there any way he can get it.
28:30And he's walked off the field a couple times.
28:33Paul, that's what you call sucking wind, man.
28:35This guy is tired.
28:38They say 40% humidity, but I was on the field before the game, and it feels like a lot more.
28:4310-0 Miami.
28:44We open the second quarter.
28:45Second down and six for Bledsoe and the Patriots.
28:48It's all incomplete.
28:49Really, Hassan Graham tried for the one-handed catch, couldn't pull it in, and he was open.
28:58Red zone.
28:59Bill Parcells said, this is where we must improve.
29:02Plenty of opportunities last year.
29:04They had 62 positions inside the 20, came away with only 24 touchdowns,
29:08but plenty of improvement, Phil, in the preseason.
29:11Well, really, I think to be a great red zone team, you must be able to get inside the 20,
29:16throw it in the end zone, or run it in there.
29:19Good running teams are always good in the red zone.
29:22Third down and six.
29:23Shotgun Bledsoe.
29:25Underneath the Coates.
29:26He has the catch at the five.
29:28It's going to be very close.
29:30No, he's going to be about a half a yard short.
29:33And you're 10-0.
29:36Now, you know Parcells.
29:37What are you going to do?
29:37You know, you're in this position right now.
29:39He's going for it.
29:40There's no doubt.
29:41I mean, you just don't get these many situations where you've got a chance to get seven points.
29:45You have to go for it.
29:46See, I would even call it whether, I mean, you could call for a measurement.
29:50Make a measurement.
29:51Yeah, give these guys a break.
29:52There was another good example.
29:54Ben Coates.
29:55Paul, he's running across that field.
29:56He looks like you.
29:57That's how slow he's running.
30:00Say that again.
30:00Come on.
30:05He gives us a feeling, doesn't it?
30:10NBC is brought to you by Domino's Pizza.
30:13Call now to enjoy a hot and delicious Domino's Pizza by halftime.
30:17For hot and wow, call Domino's now.
30:23Very light breeze from the west.
30:25And that isn't helping the comfort level.
30:29The heat index is well over 100.
30:32Testimony is Ben Coates.
30:33They brought in the heavy equipment now.
30:35Try to cool the big guy down.
30:36Oh, he's got a big bag of ice on him.
30:39He's been out there a lot.
30:40The offense for New England, 13 and a half minutes.
30:44And Dan Marino and Miami, although they lead 10-3, not much of a chance.
30:49Jarris McPhail decides to take it out and gets it back just to the 20-yard line.
30:54In three weeks on NBC, Saturday nights, they're going to get a whole new look and feel.
31:00Dark skies is coming.
31:02And we've all heard the reports about life on Mars.
31:04Well, could it be that alien life has been on Earth for a long time?
31:08The battle is about to begin.
31:09Dark skies coming to NBC Saturday in three weeks.
31:14We have been here for a long time.
31:16I know.
31:16You should get some guest shots on that show, Paul.
31:19I really should.
31:2110-3 Miami.
31:22The difference, the interception, and fumble return for touchdown by the Dolphins 70 yards early.
31:30Marino sends McDuffie in motion.
31:33Gives all to Abdul-Jabbar.
31:36A gain of two.
31:37It's 10-3 here in South Florida.
31:40Let's check elsewhere.
31:41Greg Gumbel.
31:44R.I. Dick in Denver.
31:45John Elway supplying his own highlight reel for the season already.
31:49191st career game.
31:50He ties a franchise record.
31:52This is his second touchdown pass of the day.
31:54A bullet to Ed McCaffrey.
31:5539 yards.
31:56The Broncos lead the Jets 14-0.
31:59That's a second quarter score, Dick.
32:02All right.
32:03And Phil Simms, he still can wing it, can't he?
32:05He is still the best at moving in that pocket and throwing it downfield.
32:10Second down and eight for the Dolphins at their 22.
32:13Marino, that trigger to Byers.
32:15Byers now playing tight end in the Jimmy Johnson offense.
32:19First down and 129 consecutive games with a reception for Keith Byers.
32:27And the streak is still alive.
32:29Well, Keith Byers moved to tight end.
32:31And really, that shouldn't be a problem for him because he was known as a receiver out of the backfield.
32:36And Jimmy Johnson doesn't expect his tight ends to be great run blockers.
32:41So, Byers now 129 straight games.
32:43Fifth best all-time.
32:45Art Monk, the career record holder.
32:49Steve Largent.
32:50Jerry Rice.
32:5116 yards on the floor.
32:53Good.
32:54That's it.
32:56Abdul-Jabbar into the secondary and drives to the 50.
33:01Again, 12 more.
33:03You know, the one thing about Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, now when I saw Jimmy Johnson in Chicago three weeks ago,
33:08he said, I don't know what this guy is going to do.
33:10He makes a great run and he gets hurt.
33:12He goes and sits on the sidelines.
33:13Even Marino, Dick looked at us yesterday and said, you know, look at this guy.
33:16We don't know exactly what he can do, but he is a great runner.
33:19Here is an example of why Jimmy Johnson loves this guy because he is a player.
33:24He's averaged six yards a carry today.
33:2734 yards on six attempts.
33:29First down at midfield.
33:33Behind the block.
33:35Richard gets Jabbar again.
33:37Nine more yards.
33:40Well, we were also told by the Jimmy Johnson yesterday, they're going to run on that left side.
33:44They're going to test William McGinnis against Richmond Webb.
33:48There's such a big weight difference right there.
33:51And, of course, his other all-pro linemen, Keith Sims, and they're having success on that left side of the offensive line.
33:57Well, Jimmy said to us, he said, look, if we can't run against a 255-pound defensive end and a rookie tackle,
34:03then there's something wrong with our football team.
34:05And look at the difference in the weights.
34:07255 to 303.
34:09I don't care how strong you are, 255.
34:11That weight is tough to move around.
34:13The second is short, and Jabbar trips as he gets to the line of scrimmage.
34:18He'll be just shy of a first down that would appear just outside the 40.
34:23You know, Jimmy has really been kind to us because, you know, Friday he doesn't allow anyone in to training camp or practice session.
34:30They let Phil in.
34:31Boy, he gave you a great look, didn't he?
34:32Oh, it was wonderful.
34:33He was talking to us before practice, and they take off and they have practice.
34:36They go to the far left corner of the whole complex.
34:39They go the other way.
34:41They got people lined up behind them.
34:43And Jimmy comes running off the field after practice.
34:44He goes, hey, didn't you like that practice, Phil?
34:47Yeah.
34:48I saw a lot.
34:50I saw the rear ends of a lot of big players.
34:52Jabbar carrying four of the five times in this series.
34:55He's now third and short, and Marino, running out of time, will spend his first time out.
35:02Eight minutes, 35 seconds, remaining in the first half.
35:05Miami by seven.
35:07Marino's animated.
35:08Watch this, folks.
35:09And I don't know, did he see something?
35:11He couldn't hear them.
35:12We know that part.
35:13But did he see something?
35:14Look at his eyes.
35:14Oh, yeah.
35:14I think they had a pass play call, and he knew he had it.
35:17And the clock ran down on him, so he had to call a timeout.
35:20He was salivating.
35:21He thought he had something big sitting there with no time in which to execute.
35:27So it's third and about a half yard.
35:32Jabbar met rudely for a loss.
35:36Lost about a half yard.
35:38Good defensive surge by the Patriots, and it was led by number 97, Mark Wheeler, the former
35:44Tampa Bay Buccaneer, came over to build Parcell's unrestricted free agent.
35:49This surprises me because Jimmy Johnson told us we're going to go to Webb's side.
35:54We're going to go left, Webb's and Sims, because of the guys they have over there, and they
35:57tried to go right.
35:58But that was a check play.
35:59Dan Marino came up to the line of scrimmage, and what defense they were in determined where
36:04he was going to run the football.
36:05Well, they go for it on fourth and two.
36:07I'm surprised here, too.
36:17And the lay of game against Marino.
36:20Couldn't quite beat the clock.
36:22Wow.
36:22Now it would be fourth and seven, and the punting team comes on.
36:25The lay of game on the offense, five yards, and still fourth down.
36:30They were going for it.
36:31He was going to throw the quick hitch out here to Scott Miller, and Scott Miller was
36:35open.
36:37And any time that clock runs down, where it's a delay of game, it's always the fault of
36:42the quarterbacks.
36:43He's responsible for watching it and controlling the football game.
36:47I'll tell you what he was looking at.
36:48Pritchett went out, and no one went out to cover him.
36:52They make it back as John Kidd will punt for the first time.
36:55Delivers from his own 42, a wobbler, shag at fair catch, at the 13-yard line.
37:03And that gives us a chance to update the action in the NFL.
37:07We go to New York.
37:10All right, Dick.
37:11Earlier in the day, defending AFC champion Pittsburgh lost to Jacksonville 24-9.
37:16The news on five-time Pro Bowl linebacker Greg Lloyd is not good.
37:19He suffered a torn patella tendon in his left knee.
37:22He is out for the year.
37:23Devastating news for the Steelers, who lost Rod Woodson for virtually the entire year
37:27last season, when he suffered a knee injury on opening day.
37:30Let's go back to Dick Enberg, Phil Simms, Paul McGuire in Miami.
37:34All right, Greg, and one of the premier defensive players in the entire league, out for the year.
37:39Dick, he's half of their defense.
37:41I mean, he's half of it.
37:42This guy does everything.
37:43Well, he does.
37:44He just sits the emotional edge that that team has.
37:47It's all set by Greg Lloyd.
37:48And they lost Kevin Green to free agency.
37:50Dave Megan giving Curtis Martin some relief out to the 15-yard line.
37:58A gain of a yard and a half.
38:01It'll be second down and a short nine.
38:03Trace Armstrong, Darrell Gardner, and Dwight Hollier on the tackle.
38:07Well, because of the heat, Bill Parcells did tell us yesterday that he was going to have to put Dave Megan in here
38:13and give him a few series so Curtis Martin can keep his legs fresh.
38:17Sean Jefferson to the left.
38:19Will Moore to the right.
38:20Second down and long.
38:21Ten to three.
38:22Miami leads it.
38:24Bledsoe.
38:25With the sidelines to Jefferson, who spins away from Jamie.
38:29Brown fumbles the ball.
38:30And Miami recovers.
38:31It's Lewis Oliver again.
38:48You see Sean Jefferson on the outside catching it, trying to turn it back inside.
38:53He's done it early in the game.
38:54He's going down.
38:56He just fumbles the ball.
38:58He did.
38:58He doesn't have the tip of the ball on his fingers, Paul.
39:03That's what they teach you right away.
39:04Take that ball.
39:06Secure your fingertips over one end.
39:08Stick the other end up into your body.
39:10Look how he's carrying it.
39:11Like a loaf of bread.
39:12And that's.
39:13Oh, and J.B. Brown does hit it with his hand.
39:15That's what knocks it out.
39:16Boy, I'll tell you what.
39:17You just try to do something more than you're capable of doing.
39:20Big break.
39:21Dolphins.
39:22They lead 10-3.
39:22Take over at the 25.
39:25Out of the backfield is Abdul-Jabbar.
39:28Big loss.
39:29Mark Wheeler, 97.
39:31And Willie McGinnis make the play.
39:34You know, it tells me you have a pretty good team.
39:36You're going to see Mark Wheeler make a play here.
39:38But when the offense gives the ball up and the defense gets back and they get fired up,
39:43look at Wheeler.
39:43He just goes through and makes the play in the backfield.
39:46He went right through.
39:47Tim Ruddy never had a chance.
39:48Well, Tim Ruddy didn't have a chance right there.
39:50That's just a bad blocking assignment.
39:52He's to the right.
39:53And you're asking, Tim Ruddy, to get around and stop him when the play is going to the right?
39:56Too tough of a job.
39:58The loss of 7.
40:01Second and 17 for Marino with Byers, the tight end in motion.
40:06Marino skips away from trouble and throws.
40:10Was it intercepted or trapped?
40:12They're calling it an interception.
40:14This is Terry Ray.
40:16And Ray, who played at Oklahoma, goes all the way to the Miami 47-yard line.
40:22I just said it tells you a good football team when a defense responds after the offense gives up.
40:27You're down by 7, and yet they come back defensively.
40:29That's the difference in this.
40:31Hopefully the difference Bill Parcells thinks in this team this year.
40:34Defense has some personality.
40:36Terry Ray, excellent job of reading a quarterback's eyes.
40:40Breaks on the ball as Dan Marino's throwing it.
40:42And then does an excellent job of getting up and getting yards after the interception.
40:46Did you see what he did, though, Dick?
40:47He got his knees under the ball so the ball wouldn't hit the ground.
40:51And when you're a quarterback and you throw an interception in this league,
40:54you better pay attention because those defensive linemen search out the quarterback.
41:0043-yard return by Ray.
41:03Trailing 10-3.
41:04Bledsoe goes to work.
41:05It's Jefferson, same pattern.
41:07Brown can't tackle him, but others...
41:09Oh!
41:10He fumbles again!
41:11Recovered by Oliver!
41:13No, it's Tim Bowens!
41:1595!
41:16Oh, that is...
41:17I'm telling you.
41:18That is unexcusable, really, to take a catch like that and keep breaking across the field.
41:25And Coach Parcells can't believe it either.
41:27You know, the worst part about it, he has the first down if he turns to his right.
41:30But, no, he comes back inside again.
41:32You already fumbled once, and now, that was Edmund just nailed him and knocked the ball out.
41:38When you go back inside, you've got to expect pursuit from the defense.
41:41You're running into all the bodies.
41:43Sean Jefferson, two plays, coughs it up twice.
41:51Marino, look at this.
41:52He was on the phone talking upstairs.
41:54He got the ball back.
41:55Oh.
41:56I'll tell you what, as a quarterback, you really never lose sight of what's happening on the field.
42:01You're watching every play, hoping for something good.
42:04Well, Miami, leading 10-3, gets the ball back at their 39-yard line.
42:11Jamar breaks one tackle and fights his way to the 47-yard line.
42:16A gain of eight.
42:18Dick, this is...
42:19That was Devin Wyman.
42:21I mean, he's in the backfield, should make the tackle.
42:23Number 72, I mean, he is there to make the play, but watch Abdul-Jabbar, the strength of him.
42:30Wyman, 72, is there.
42:31He's got his arms around him.
42:33Abdul-Jabbar just throws him away and goes up into the hole, picks up nine yards.
42:37Jimmy Johnson says Abdul-Jabbar, he can find that crease better than any running back we have,
42:42and as Nate Newton once told us, he knows how to run the daylight.
42:45One, two, one, nine, two, one!
42:47And his second, and one.
42:49Jabbar again.
42:51Finds daylight, hit hard, but not.
42:53Not until he picks up a first down at the 44.
42:57Terry Ray made the stop.
42:59And that was a crease right there.
43:00He had a little hole right there, and he hits it full speed ahead.
43:04Hits the only spot in that offensive line where he has a chance to get positive yards.
43:09Watch right there.
43:10Little hole squeezes right through at full speed.
43:13Excellent job of running.
43:14Yeah, a little hole, but how about Pritchett?
43:16I mean, Pritchett is blocking.
43:18This young man can block.
43:20Changed his name from Sherman Shaw a year ago.
43:23Kareem Abdul-Jabbar gets a breather.
43:2652 yards for him.
43:27Bernie Harnelly in the middle.
43:29Ball slip, and he shoots up the middle.
43:32Another first down.
43:34Jimmy Johnson proclaimed early word going to run the ball.
43:40Do you believe him now?
43:41I mean, it's hard to believe we're watching the Miami Dolphins, because this is an excellent
43:45job of staying with the run, keeping it to the defenders, and the running backs are doing
43:52an excellent job of running to the hose full speed and getting positive yards.
43:56But see, the knock on this offensive line at the beginning of the year is, how are you
43:59going to run when you've got Marino back there, and all you've ever really done is pass block?
44:03Well, they're proving today that they can also run block.
44:06Harnelly again after 17 on the last carry.
44:09He's knocked down after a two-yard gain as he reaches the 25.
44:15Paul, you can just see him.
44:16Pritchett just, I mean, he nails Wheeler.
44:18Mark Wheeler, number 97.
44:20It really is an easy block, but he comes down the line of scrimmage.
44:25We're talking about this young guy.
44:26One of the reasons, watch 36 here, folks.
44:28Look at this block.
44:29Boom!
44:30You're out of there.
44:31And what you're going to see, New England's going to have to get a safety involved up
44:35there, and Dan Marino and Jimmy Johnson said once they've got to get up there to help against
44:40that running game, we're going to go big outside.
44:43Rushing New England almost 3-1.
44:46On second and eight.
44:49And the catch by Scott Miller, who has started his first game with the Dolphins, now in his
44:56sixth year here in Miami.
45:01Scott Miller, the sure-handed receiver for the Miami Dolphins.
45:06Ty Law, the defensive back, does an excellent job of reading the quick step.
45:10Step by Dan Marino makes the break, but Dan Marino doesn't let the ball hang in the air
45:14too long.
45:16Now, no wonder.
45:16You know what?
45:16See how heavy he looks here?
45:18That's what television does to me.
45:20Yeah, that's right.
45:23First down for the Dolphins, leading 10-3.
45:26The toss to Parmalee, breaks one tackle, missed tackle by McGinnis, who had it.
45:33As we approach the two-minute warning here in South Florida, the Miami Dolphins leading
45:38the New England Patriots by seven, and looking for more.
45:42On the NFL, on NBC, the Wild West rivalry is renewed.
45:48Steve Bono and the Kansas City Chiefs host Tim Brown and the Oakland Raiders.
45:52John Elway and the Broncos battle Rick Meyer and the Seahawks.
45:55The Ravens take on the Steelers.
45:57Original action, next Sunday at 12 noon Eastern on the NFL on NBC.
46:01With Paul McGuire and Phil Simms, Dick Henberg, welcome back to Miami, where Jimmy Johnson's
46:09Dolphins have been very impressive in this first half.
46:12The score is 10-3.
46:13Miami has the ball at the 12-yard line of New England, where it's second down and six.
46:18And Dick, I believe, and Paul, we talk about it all the time, running is an attitude.
46:23Jimmy has brought that attitude to the Dolphins, and it's, I'm surprised they're having this
46:27much success, but they're going to continue to run this ball hard all year long.
46:32Carmelie, the running back, but Marino fades the throw underneath, an incomplete, almost
46:37picked off Stanley Pritchett, the fullback, was the intended receiver, and Ted Johnson,
46:42Patriots middle linebacker, had a hand on it.
46:45You know, Dick, we talk so much about the running game and how both of these guys would like to run,
46:49but this is the reflection of this is going to be later on in the season.
46:53This is when they're really going to need it.
46:54When they play in cold-weather areas, in the rain, when you have to run the football,
46:58the Miami Dolphins have not been able to do that.
47:01And that's what he wants to establish.
47:02Call that, and it preserves your defense.
47:04That's the biggest thing.
47:05And it teaches your team, you practice a run, you become tougher because of that.
47:11Dolphins go to four wide out with Jarris McPhail with Marino.
47:15McDuffie is the man he likes to go to.
47:17He looks for McDuffie, but he can't get it off.
47:20And he throws it.
47:21Finds McDuffie in a first down at the five.
47:24And what an effort by Dan Marino.
47:27You think he isn't tough?
47:29I'm telling you what.
47:30These guys are draped all over him, and he knows where everyone is on the field.
47:34He was going to go to McDuffie anyway.
47:36That was the first guy he was going to throw to was O.J. McDuffie.
47:40Now watch him.
47:40He gets caught up inside.
47:41But watch Marino.
47:43He steps up.
47:43He can't get it to him.
47:45He brings it down, and then he just flicks it.
47:46Whoops.
47:51Whoops.
47:51You're not allowed to do that.
47:52Well, that was accidental, right?
47:54But that's an excellent job of Dan Marino.
47:57Throw from any angle, just flicks it with his wrist.
47:59First and goal at the five.
48:01I think Javar picks his nose off tackle and picks up a couple of yards.
48:06Well, we've talked about it through the years.
48:08Marino now in his 14th season with the quickest release.
48:11Once he decides to go with a pass, can deliver faster than anyone, perhaps, in the history of the game.
48:17And that time from the most awkward of positions.
48:20I think Willie Clay said it best yesterday.
48:23You really have to play receivers and not the ball because he throws it so quick and hard.
48:27You just can't react to it.
48:30Second and goal at the three.
48:34Javar touchdown.
48:36Now, Jimmy Johnson said we'll run.
48:59They have.
49:00And Marino says Abdul Javar's been the workhorse.
49:03Give him the touchdown chance.
49:05And the young man from UCLA has his first professional score.
49:12Joe Nidney, the driver point.
49:16Good job by Kidd, respotting the ball.
49:19And Miami takes a 17-3 lead.
49:25Kareem Abdul-Javar, great blocking up front.
49:2961 yards and 10 plays for Miami.
49:32You're watching the NFL on NBC.
49:37This guy says he's looking for Dan Marino.
49:39I wasn't aware of any visitors for Dan.
49:4139!
49:42I like that kind of body!
49:45Sorry, Dan's busy.
49:46Going somewhere.
49:48And you are...
49:49Oops.
49:50So sorry.
49:51Didn't I tell you this is private property?
49:53Marino throwing deep.
49:54Hands of that open.
49:55Hey, maybe we can give Dan a message for you.
50:01Here, make this good block on Ted Johnson.
50:04Opens the hole to the end zone for Kareem Abdul-Javar.
50:08Kareem Abdul-Javar with 57 yards rushing in this opening half.
50:12What a debut for him.
50:14And a 17-3 lead.
50:16Only 35 seconds remain in this first half.
50:19Stay with us at halftime.
50:21All the scores and highlights from New York of this opening day's action.
50:26And the Patriots, a couple of critical fumbles by Sean Jefferson denying potential drives.
50:32Well, you know, Sean Jefferson, when he was with San Diego, he used to catch the ball and just didn't drop it.
50:37Now, with New England, he catches it, then runs with it a little bit, and then drops it.
50:41So, you know, he's holding on to it a little bit longer.
50:44One of the reasons why he was waived by San Diego.
50:49Dropped too many passes out there.
50:50At least that's what they thought with the organization.
50:52And he's catching the ball.
50:54You're right, Paul.
50:54But showing he's not doing a good job of tucking it away once he catches it and tries to make those runs.
51:00So, Troy Brown and Dave Megat are at the goal line for New England with just seconds remaining in this opening half.
51:07And that knee kicks it off.
51:12Megat at the two.
51:17And fights to get just to the 15-yard line.
51:23O.J. Briggins made the tackle.
51:25The tradition of Notre Dame football returns to NBC Sports.
51:29And that'll be in just two weeks.
51:31Start quarterback Ron Paulus and the Fighting Irish welcome the Boilermakers of Purdue on campus.
51:36Notre Dame football on NBC in two weeks.
51:39The Fighting Irish and the Boilermakers.
51:43Miami Dolphins will get the ball in the second half.
51:47They better figure out a way to slow down this running game.
51:49I mean, is that unusual to say?
51:51Miami.
51:51Miami.
51:52Miami.
51:54Bledsoe just going to take a knee.
51:56And with less than 30 seconds remaining, both teams eager to get into the air-conditioned locker rooms at the intermission.
52:03Jimmy Johnson has opened his era in Miami.
52:08And, well, at the end of the first act, the fans here give him a standing ovation.
52:17It all began with a 70-yard touchdown play early in the game.
52:21Lewis Oliver intercepting.
52:23Fumbled.
52:23Sean Hill finished the 70 yards.
52:25The final 10.
52:26And we'll be sending you to our NFL NBC studios right after these words from your local station.
52:33Here in Miami, three New England turnovers.
52:36Two by wide receiver Sean Jefferson, combining with a new-look running game,
52:41has given the Dolphins an impressive 17-3 lead at halftime.
52:45Now to Greg Gumbel in New York.
52:50This is the Domino's Pizza NFL on NBC Halftime Report.
52:54Brought to you by Domino's Pizza for Hot and Wow.
52:57Call Domino's.
52:59Now.
53:02All right.
53:03Thank you, Dick.
53:03Welcome, everyone.
53:04Greg Gumbel along with Joe Gibbs, Mike Ditka, Chris Collinsworth
53:07as we run down scores and highlights of the action today.
53:09The game that you are watching, the Miami Dolphins leading the New England Patriots at halftime
53:13by a score of 17-3.
53:15This Dolphin team looking any different to you?
53:17Oh, there are a lot of defensive coordinators around the league right now going, uh-oh.
53:21Well, Dan Marino with a running game.
53:23Last year, the Dolphins ran the ball only 41% of the time.
53:28So far in this game, 17 runs.
53:31Dan Marino only seven passes.
53:34He used to get that in the first drive of ball games.
53:36This is a scary situation for the rest of the league.
53:38And Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, 14 of those carries for 56 yards.
53:41In Denver, it's a Broncos romp thus far, 28-0 as they approach halftime at Mile High Stadium.
53:47Two touchdown passes.
53:49John Elway, one to Sharp, one to McCaffrey.
53:51What's going on there, Mike?
53:53Well, you know, I really like Denver a lot.
53:55I told you the two teams I like the most are Denver and Miami and so forth.
53:58That's holding up.
53:59Denver is solid all the way through.
54:01And I think it looked like they found a pass right.
54:03Oh, Donna wishes he was back at Pittsburgh.
54:05Believe me.
54:05You bet.
54:06All right, in San Diego, the Chargers and the Seahawks, as they approach halftime,
54:10the Chargers lead it by a field goal, 10-7, the score there.
54:13In San Francisco, the 49ers all over the Saints, 24-0.
54:17Vardell and Rice have scored touchdown runs for the Niners.
54:20In Tampa, the Bucs and the Green Bay Packers, the Packers lead it 24-3.
54:25The Brett Favre to Keith Jackson connection has clicked three times today,
54:29the last time for 51-yard touchdown, 24-3 Green Bay.
54:33Earlier today, Baltimore, the Ravens, their home opener.
54:37They beat the Oakland Raiders 19-14.
54:40That's former Colts great Johnny Unitas.
54:43Reading Ravens coach Ted Marchabroda before the game,
54:45Ravens quarterback Vinny Testaverde can't find an open receiver,
54:48so he takes off on his own.
54:49Nine-yard touchdown run, Baltimore led 7-0.
54:52Billy Joe Hobart playing for the injured Jeff Hostetler
54:55connected with Tim Brown on a pair of scoring passes.
54:58The nine-yarder gives the Raiders a 14-7 lead at halftime.
55:02Ernest Beiner put Baltimore ahead to stay with a one-yard touchdown run.
55:06The two-point conversion failed, but the Ravens held on to win 19-14
55:10as the fans celebrate the first win in team history.
55:14In Jacksonville, the Jaguars beat up on the Pittsburgh Steelers today.
55:1824-9 was the final score.
55:20Steeler linebacker Greg Lloyd carted off the field
55:23with a season-ending injury to his left knee, torn patella tendon.
55:27Meanwhile, Jaguars quarterback Mark Brunel threw two touchdown passes.
55:31This 15-yarder to Keena McCarnell just before halftime
55:33put the Jaguars up 14-6.
55:36The Steelers rotated all three of their quarterbacks without success.
55:39Mike Tomczak picked off by number one draft pick Kevin Hardy here.
55:43The Jaguars outplay the Steelers and win by a final of 24-9.
55:47The Greg Lloyd saga is only part of what was just an overall bad day for the Steelers, Joe.
55:51An absolute nightmare for Bill Cowher.
55:54Think about this.
55:54In the offseason, they decided to let O'Donnell go,
55:57and now it looks like they have a totally confused quarterback picture.
56:00Then they decided to let Kevin Green go, one of their pass rushers.
56:03Today, Lloyd gets hurt.
56:04Now you've lost your pass rushers.
56:06I can't picture a worse day for Bill Cowher.
56:09Pittsburgh Steelers look like after one game that they could be in trouble.
56:12Jaguars only had 17 sacks all last year.
56:14They registered four today, three by Jeff Lagerman.
56:17In Indianapolis, the Colts beat Arizona 20-13.
56:20New Arizona head coach Vince Tobin, the Colts' defensive coordinator,
56:24passed two years against his old team.
56:26This is a scary moment for the Colts.
56:27Jim Harbaugh's passing arm hit hard by defensive tackle Eric Swamp.
56:31Harbaugh left with a bruised right arm but returned in the second half.
56:34And in the fourth quarter, he looks for and finds rookie receiver Marvin Harrison,
56:3835 yards and a touchdown.
56:40Harrison's first NFL TD.
56:42Harbaugh's second of the game.
56:43It was 20-6 at that point.
56:45The Colts win it 20-13.
56:46In Houston, nip and tuck game taken by the Kansas City Chiefs today.
56:5120-19 was the final score.
56:53In Washington, the Eagles outlasted the Redskins 17-14.
56:57That is eight straight wins for the Eagles over the Redskins.
57:01Eagles coach Ray Rhodes hoping to avoid the slow start that hurt his club last year.
57:04Rodney Peet, touchdown pass, put Philly in front.
57:07But Terry Allen takes it in from the two to tie the game at seven.
57:10Allen had 110 yards rushing and two touchdowns.
57:13Pete broke the tie by finding Chris T. Jones with a nine-yard touchdown pass here.
57:1914-7 Philly.
57:20Pete finished with 267 yards passing and two touchdowns.
57:24The Eagles, 17-14.
57:26St. Louis at home beat the Cincinnati Bengals today.
57:2926-16.
57:31Lawrence Phillips scored two touchdowns.
57:33Minnesota at home beat the Detroit Lions.
57:3517-13.
57:36The winning play, a Brad Johnson touchdown pass to Chris Carter.
57:42And in Carolina, the Panthers over the Atlanta Falcons by a score of 29-6.
57:47We will send you back to Miami for the second half right after these words from your local station.
