00:00:00Domino's Pizza, for Hot and Wow, call Domino's, now.
00:00:06And we welcome you back to our studio in New York, Greg Gumbel, along with Chris Collinsworth, Mike Ditka, and Joe Gibbs, as we run down the scores and highlights for you.
00:00:15And we'll begin with the game in Philadelphia, where at halftime, the Eagles are leading the Miami Dolphins 21-11.
00:00:21Dan Marino, designated as the emergency QB today, he's just a month with a broken ankle.
00:00:26On Philly's opening possession, Ricky Waters, the hole up the middle, takes it 46 yards to the Miami 38-yard line.
00:00:32Waters has rushed for over 100 yards in three of his last four games.
00:00:36The very next play, Ty Detmer, with all kinds of time, finds former Dolphin Irving Friar, 38 yards and a touchdown.
00:00:44Can he be more wide open? The Eagles off the 7-0 lead.
00:00:47Detmer to Friar again, this time 2 yards, 14-0 Eagles.
00:00:51Jimmy Johnson, a little bit concerned about the bad start.
00:00:53It was 14-3 Eagles, Erickson to Randall Hill for 6 yards.
00:00:57The Dolphins added a 2-point conversion to close to within 3 at 14-11.
00:01:01But the Detmer to Friar combination is clicking today.
00:01:05This one is worth 12 yards and a touchdown.
00:01:0821-11 is the score at halftime.
00:01:11And you'd have to say, Jimmy Johnson is certainly surprised by what's going on.
00:01:14Yeah, but the key to this football game, at least in the first half, has been the fact they got Ricky Waters untracked early in this game.
00:01:20Jimmy Johnson then was forced to say, all right, we've got to shut him down, take him away, force Ty Detmer to beat us.
00:01:25And guess what? He's doing a pretty good job of it.
00:01:28Meanwhile, Mike, does Jimmy Johnson still have to stick to the running game?
00:01:30He does. And the key to this game, I beg to differ, is the officiating. It stinks.
00:01:34And the other thing that's bad is the call by Gary Stevens on second and two.
00:01:38He goes, pass, pass, interception. He's in trouble.
00:01:41Who'd you pick today?
00:01:42Can you guess what he picked here?
00:01:45In Dallas, the 3-3 Cowboys hosting the 0-6 Falcons.
00:01:50The law of averages on the Falcons' side today.
00:01:52They lead it by one at halftime by a score of 18-17.
00:01:56The game that you are watching in Indianapolis, the Patriots are leading the Colts by a score of 10-6.
00:02:02And, Joe, the Patriots have had problems inside the 20-yard line.
00:02:05The Colts have had problems scoring inside the 20-yard line today.
00:02:07Well, I think they've had problems, as we talked about before the game, period, scoring because of the offensive line play right now.
00:02:13And the injury problems haven't helped Indianapolis at all.
00:02:16No, it really hasn't. They lost a couple of guys off that defense.
00:02:19But any time you take the ball three times inside your opponent's 10-yard line, like the Colts did in that first half,
00:02:24and come away with three points, you deserve to be behind.
00:02:27Mike is smiling.
00:02:28Oh, it's just great defense.
00:02:29All right. In Washington, how about those Redskins?
00:02:34The Redskins at halftime leading the New York Giants 28-0.
00:02:37Terry Allen has scored three touchdowns for Washington.
00:02:40Darrell Green has returned an interception 68 yards for a touchdown.
00:02:44And you're looking like a proud papa over there, Joe Gibbs.
00:02:47How come I couldn't do this to the Giants?
00:02:49These guys, I mean, can you believe it?
00:02:51It's not going to be the Cowboys leading the division, not the Eagles.
00:02:53It's going to be the Redskins, 6-1.
00:02:55Because the Giants didn't have Dave Brown quarterback when you played him.
00:02:58I knew it was coming.
00:02:59All right, guys.
00:03:00And in Carolina, the Panthers hosting the New Orleans Saints.
00:03:02The Saints lead it by one at halftime.
00:03:04The score is 7-6.
00:03:05When we come back, we'll hear from the great Jerry Rice.
00:03:08His 49ers host the Bengals in one of our doubleheader games today.
00:03:11And we'll get to that right after these words from your local station.
00:03:13Halftime in Indianapolis with the Patriots leading the Colts 10-6.
00:03:27And, Bob, that was about as ugly a first half as we've seen this season, I'd say.
00:03:30Yeah, no argument from me.
00:03:32The Patriots lead and the most valuable player of the first half of the Patriots was Cliff Gross.
00:03:37So, unfortunately, he plays for the Colts.
00:03:39He put the ball to the ground twice.
00:03:41The Patriots come up with 10 points off of those two fumbles.
00:03:45And a look at Teddy Bruschi.
00:03:46Reminds us that it's time for the Coors Light halftime stats.
00:03:50Oh, you guys do take liberties.
00:03:55But you can see the yardage by Indianapolis excellent.
00:03:59But it's just the two turnovers.
00:04:01Look at the 20-10 in time of possession.
00:04:05Colts have done everything that they want.
00:04:06They've been inside the 20 four times.
00:04:09Two field goals, a fumble, and they lost one on a four down.
00:04:14So, I mean, it's just been an awful half.
00:04:16Squandered opportunities by the Colts and the Patriots.
00:04:19Normally the best in the league in first downs had only five.
00:04:23Four by way of the pass and one rushing first down in that first half.
00:04:27So, a half filled with frustration on both sides of the football.
00:04:37And here's the kickoff.
00:04:38Gardaki sends it downfield on a bounce.
00:04:41Picked up by Troy Brown.
00:04:44Brown tries to get outside and is unable to do so.
00:04:50Diedrich Mathis first to arrive on the scene with good coverage of the kick.
00:04:55A little scuffle breaks out there.
00:04:57Nothing serious.
00:04:58Yeah, there might have been a scuffle in the locker room at halftime.
00:05:01Oh, wow.
00:05:07Drew Bledsoe left the field at the end of the half.
00:05:09Wanting to go for it on fourth down as they took the field goal instead.
00:05:15Six of 11 in the first half.
00:05:17The magic number again on Bledsoe, 60%.
00:05:20Patriots are 3-0 when he hits 60 and 0-3 when he doesn't.
00:05:25Send Coates in motion on first down.
00:05:33First down pass.
00:05:34Bledsoe lost it to Gash.
00:05:36Makes a good catch for about five yards.
00:05:38Bumped out of bounds by Steve Morrison.
00:05:41Gave him six yards on the play.
00:05:42Yeah, well, one thing we're going to know about the New England Patriots offense.
00:05:45It will be fresh leading into this second half, playing just 10 minutes.
00:05:5010 minutes of possession.
00:05:51Yeah.
00:05:52And ahead.
00:05:52Good, fresh legs for this New England offense.
00:05:55Delayed handoff.
00:06:09Curtis Martin will be about a yard short of the first down, tripped up by Ellis Johnson.
00:06:16Check those other scores.
00:06:17Boy, Irving Fryer, the former Patriot, with three touchdown catches from Ty Detmer today.
00:06:26Never seems to age, doesn't it?
00:06:28Doesn't it?
00:06:30Curtis Martin now with nine carries, 33 yards.
00:06:34It's third down and one.
00:06:39Ah, it's going to be third and six.
00:06:43Max Lane for the second time with a false start.
00:06:47And this is where the first half started.
00:06:51There was a false start on the offense, number 68, five-yard penalty, third down.
00:06:58Well, you hope that your team is ready mentally to play, but Max Lane is right there in motion,
00:07:04and he really breaks out.
00:07:07Is there something going on in Indiana this weekend?
00:07:10Notre Dame kind of looked like this yesterday.
00:07:13Yes, it did.
00:07:18Let's all load it up and fires it in, complete intended for Coates.
00:07:23Too much on it.
00:07:24And on their first possession of the third quarter, the Patriots will give it up.
00:07:28Tom, remind me, isn't that the first pass attempt in the direction of Penn Coates?
00:07:32A couple that were close to him.
00:07:34We couldn't decide whether they were intended his way or not, but yes, the first one we know
00:07:38for sure was headed toward the Patriots' leading receiver.
00:07:42Our soldier took a chunk out of Max Lane as he walked by.
00:07:46A large bite.
00:07:48Tom Tupa will punt.
00:07:57Sails it toward Marvin Harrison, who has to backtrack to the 19-yard line.
00:08:02Tupa with another boomer and a fumble.
00:08:05Patriots have it.
00:08:08Marvin Harrison with the third lost fumble by the Colts.
00:08:14Mario Greer with the fumble recovery after that 58-yard punt.
00:08:19And there are a lot of goat's horns to spread around for the Colts today.
00:08:26Again, I didn't see real tough contact to knock that ball loose.
00:08:32He has to retreat almost 15 yards to make the catch.
00:08:37Who makes the hit?
00:08:39Actually, it looked like number 86, I believe, who was the punt-stamper.
00:08:45Now that's Mike Bartram, the tight end, makes the contact.
00:08:48I'm in the recovery and great field position again for New England.
00:08:51One thing the Patriots have done well today is take advantage of the Colt turnovers.
00:08:57Curtis Martin bounces to the outside, got a great block.
00:09:01Buffed out of bounds after a gain of 9 or 10 yards by Ray Buchanan.
00:09:04It was Bruce Armstrong, the perennial all-pro, that opened it up for Curtis Martin.
00:09:09He pulled from the far side tackle to have that lead block in front of Curtis Martin.
00:09:15And Armstrong, one of those great offensive linemen, he just parks Stephen Grant.
00:09:20And Curtis Martin does a great job of just staying there, waiting for that block to take place,
00:09:24then exploding for the first down, or almost 10 yards for the first down.
00:09:32Just a yard shy, second down.
00:09:34Martin has the first down, first and goal.
00:09:38Patriots spot the ball just inside the 5.
00:09:44Sammy Burrows, the bottom of the stack.
00:09:47Help from Bernard Whittington, but not until Martin had the first down.
00:09:53I'm getting the feeling that the Colts are now thinking that the footballs used today are visiting footballs,
00:10:00not home footballs.
00:10:01First and goal, New England.
00:10:06Dash and Martin in the eye.
00:10:08Curtis Martin cuts back.
00:10:10Tripped up at about the 2-yard line.
00:10:15Steve Morrison just got a hand on his leg,
00:10:18and it appeared he was going to sprint to the end zone.
00:10:20Well, you can begin to see some of the frustration setting in here on the Colt defense.
00:10:24They've basically done their job.
00:10:26Nice little trap run by New England.
00:10:28Excellent job by several players.
00:10:32Morrison keeping him out of the end zone, but this defense has done its job.
00:10:37Spot the ball at the 1, second and goal.
00:10:41Three tight ends, including Keith Byers.
00:10:46Martin for the touchdown.
00:10:48It looked like William Roberts pulled that time along with Bruce Armstrong,
00:10:55and Martin just waltzed into the end zone.
00:11:00And the GOAT this time is Marvin Harrison for the Colts, who fumbled the putt.
00:11:05Turnover's your friend, isn't it?
00:11:08It is today for New England.
00:11:11Fifth rushing touchdown of the season for Curtis Martin.
00:11:14There's 76, William Roberts.
00:11:17Gash, 33.
00:11:18Good lead block out there for Martin.
00:11:20Again, very patient runner.
00:11:22Waits for those blocks to take place.
00:11:25Minuteri's extra point is good.
00:11:26So after Harrison's fumble, the Patriots go 17 yards in four plays.
00:11:33Martin takes it outside and into the end zone, and New England leads 17-6.
00:11:41From downtown Indianapolis, the Indiana State Capitol, Tom Hammond, Bob Trumpy.
00:11:46And Aaron Bailey takes the kickoff.
00:11:53Flags fly from every direction, and why not?
00:11:56As Bailey is slapped down by Teddy Bruschi at the 25-yard line.
00:12:02While we wait for him to sort out the penalty,
00:12:05Ty Detmer has hit Irving Fryer for a fourth touchdown pass for the Eagles today.
00:12:11And he was given up for finished in Miami, right?
00:12:15Jimmy Johnson didn't want Irving Fryer.
00:12:20Touchdown passes, Detmer to Fryer.
00:12:22Holding on the return by the receiving team, number 50.
00:12:25Ten-yard penalty, first down.
00:12:29Elijah Alexander on the hold for the Colts.
00:12:31Detmer to Fryer from 38 yards, one yard, 12 yards, and 36 yards.
00:12:36Four touchdown passes.
00:12:41By the way, the Eagles lead the Dolphins 28-11 in that one.
00:12:45Three turnovers.
00:12:55Contributing to the scoreboard for the Patriots.
00:12:58Here's Lamont Warren on the pitch.
00:12:59Looks for a block at the point of attack.
00:13:01Stood up and driven back by Monty Brown and Mike Jones.
00:13:06And for an update on the Dolphins and the Eagles,
00:13:08let's go to Greg Gumbel in New York.
00:13:10Greg?
00:13:10Tom, as you mentioned, four times today,
00:13:13the tied Detmer to Irving Fryer combo has clicked this one from 36 yards out.
00:13:18Irving Fryer having himself a career day.
00:13:21Seven catches, 109 yards, four touchdowns.
00:13:2428-11, the Eagles lead Miami, Tom.
00:13:27All right, thanks, Greg, for that quick support,
00:13:30as the former Patriot is indeed having a career day.
00:13:34Yeah, a message maybe to Jimmy Johnson, you think?
00:13:37Could be.
00:13:37Could have been a little extra incentive for Irving Fryer.
00:13:42Play action fake as Harbaugh spritz.
00:13:45Delivers.
00:13:46And it's caught.
00:13:49Harrison.
00:13:51Lines his way to the 30-yard line and a cold first down.
00:13:55Ty Law finally tracks him down with help from Mike Jones,
00:14:00who was putting the pressure on Harbaugh.
00:14:03Tom, once you see Harrison make the catch, excellent move,
00:14:07but watch what he does when he catches it.
00:14:09He can't wait to get both hands on the ball.
00:14:11He almost dropped it again,
00:14:12then covers it with both hands to make sure he doesn't fumble it.
00:14:16What a nice completion.
00:14:19That one for 15 yards, Colts first down.
00:14:27Dilder in motion, resets on the right side.
00:14:34Harbaugh has Gross wide open, holds onto it.
00:14:38Cliff Gross, another cold first down.
00:14:42Willie Clay bangs him down.
00:14:44Cliff Gross holds on.
00:14:45He don't think that the Patriots said,
00:14:47we're not even going to defend him.
00:14:49I wouldn't blame him.
00:14:51They expected him to help him on this play somehow,
00:14:54but he fools him.
00:14:54He catches it and picks up a first down.
00:14:57You can see Harbaugh is very late looking over here.
00:15:00Gross, he's thrown the ball to him a couple of times in the first half.
00:15:03Gross has not caught it.
00:15:05Gross is trying to take out his frustration on some poor little defensive back,
00:15:09so he just hammers him.
00:15:1618 and 29 for Captain Comeback.
00:15:23First down, wins it complete to Dawkins.
00:15:26It'll be another Indianapolis first down.
00:15:28This one at the Patriots 41.
00:15:31Willie Clay knocking Dawkins out of bounds.
00:15:36Again, a great job of Jim Harbaugh on the backside of the zone.
00:15:40So you're going to see the defensive back keep backing.
00:15:42He's got help underneath supposedly,
00:15:44but that's the soft side of the zone that the Colts have exploited
00:15:47to this point in the game.
00:15:4816-yard game, another first down.
00:15:51Dawkins having a big afternoon.
00:15:57Too tight in formation here on first down.
00:16:03The late handoff to Warren.
00:16:07Not only a yard to the 40 where he's wrapped up by Monte Brown.
00:16:11That was an awful nice job by Willie McGinnis, number 55.
00:16:14The tight end lined up across from him.
00:16:17Pollard was trying to block him,
00:16:19but McGinnis fought off the block
00:16:20and really gave the Lamont Warren no place to run.
00:16:24McGinnis making the transition from linebacker
00:16:27to true defensive end this year.
00:16:29Now he thinks he can play
00:16:30with a much better consistency for New England.
00:16:35Just over eight minutes left in the third.
00:16:3717-6 New England.
00:16:40Second and nine for the Colts.
00:16:44Play action fake.
00:16:45McGinnis hits Harbaugh,
00:16:46but he finds Dilger
00:16:47for only about a yard gain.
00:16:50Monte Brown wrestles down Dilger
00:16:52as McGinnis was coming after Harbaugh.
00:16:57This is a very shallow cross run by the tight end.
00:17:01Middle linebacker picks him up,
00:17:02throws him a little shove.
00:17:03That's legal.
00:17:05And shortens the pattern.
00:17:06It started out being five yards deep,
00:17:08and when that push,
00:17:08it made it two yards deep.
00:17:10Did he gain anything at all?
00:17:11Well, maybe a half yard.
00:17:14Third catch by Dilger for 25 yards.
00:17:16Third and long,
00:17:17so they're looking at seven DBs.
00:17:27Harbaugh.
00:17:28Only to the 35-yard line
00:17:32where Harrison catches it.
00:17:33He'll be short of the first down.
00:17:34Ty Law made sure he didn't get any further upfield.
00:17:39He'll be about three or four yards short.
00:17:42I believe this is Harrison right here.
00:17:45He runs the out.
00:17:46Of course,
00:17:46there's defense now
00:17:47with the seven defensive backs.
00:17:48They do an excellent job
00:17:49of making sure the receiver
00:17:51does not get too far down the field.
00:17:53Harrison does the right thing,
00:17:54comes back for the football,
00:17:56but not enough to be even close
00:17:58for the third down conversion.
00:18:01Four yards short,
00:18:02but they're going to go for it.
00:18:03Fourth and four,
00:18:05and the Colts will go for it
00:18:06from the 35 of New England.
00:18:08Again, seven DBs for the Patriots.
00:18:13Quick strike and almost intercepted.
00:18:15Ty Law had it timed pretty well.
00:18:18Harrison was the intended receiver.
00:18:21Had Law held on to the ball,
00:18:23he would have taken it all the way
00:18:25for the touchdown.
00:18:26As it is,
00:18:28the Patriots will take over on downs.
00:18:30Second time in the game,
00:18:32they've stopped the Colts on downs.
00:18:35Ty Law makes this play.
00:18:36Patriots hold on to a 17-6 lead.
00:18:43This is the NFL on NBC.
00:18:48Back in Indianapolis, number 24.
00:18:51The Colts fought the law,
00:18:52and the law won.
00:18:53Ty Law, yes.
00:18:56Play action fake.
00:18:57Drew Bledsoe going deep.
00:18:59Lofts it downfield,
00:19:00and it is incomplete.
00:19:01Intended for Sean Jefferson.
00:19:03Diedrich Mathis was running with Jefferson,
00:19:08who appeared to have a step,
00:19:09but the ball sort of
00:19:10hung up there too long,
00:19:14and Bledsoe now falls to 50% completions.
00:19:177 of 14 for 59 yards.
00:19:19Yeah, 59 yards.
00:19:2017 points on 59 yards.
00:19:23Look at this.
00:19:247 first down, 17 points.
00:19:26118 yards, 17 points.
00:19:29We've had touchdown drives
00:19:31of 8 yards and 17 yards.
00:19:33That's amazing.
00:19:34Courtesy of Colt Miskew.
00:19:38Bledsoe finds his outlet man,
00:19:40Gash.
00:19:41Gash,
00:19:42feet chopping,
00:19:42can get nowhere.
00:19:43Herod and Morrison
00:19:44combined to take him down.
00:19:46Five-yard gain.
00:19:57It'll be third down
00:19:58for New England.
00:20:01As the Colts get there
00:20:02and nickel defense on the field.
00:20:09Keith Byers in the backfield
00:20:11along with Meggett.
00:20:12Colts in motion.
00:20:19Bledsoe's passes complete.
00:20:21First down at midfield,
00:20:22Sean Jefferson.
00:20:26Colts playing so much,
00:20:28paying so much attention
00:20:29to Dave Meggett.
00:20:31We're going to see Meggett
00:20:32come out of the backfield
00:20:33right here,
00:20:34and it really opens up
00:20:35a nice little lane
00:20:36for the pass to Jefferson.
00:20:38See, Meggett drew that guy out.
00:20:40Just opened the defense
00:20:41underneath Sean Jefferson.
00:20:42for an easy completion.
00:20:44It goes for 10 yards.
00:20:46Eugene Daniel,
00:20:46the tackle.
00:20:47Ball resting
00:20:47on the midfield stripe.
00:20:54Draw play.
00:20:55Martin.
00:20:56Hit in the backfield
00:20:57by Bernard Whittington.
00:20:59Took his feet out
00:21:00from under him,
00:21:00and he falls forward
00:21:01for a yard.
00:21:02The Colts have done
00:21:03an excellent job
00:21:04of keeping Curtis Martin
00:21:05in check for the most part.
00:21:07He really hasn't
00:21:08broken a big run.
00:21:09Scored a touchdown,
00:21:11but that was down
00:21:11on the goal line,
00:21:12so the Patriots
00:21:14have had to go
00:21:15almost exclusively
00:21:17with the run
00:21:18against Washington.
00:21:19He had to, what,
00:21:19164,
00:21:21his second best
00:21:21personal performance ever.
00:21:2210, 100-yard rushing games
00:21:25and 22 career starts.
00:21:26And the Colts
00:21:27have controlled Martin.
00:21:28Quick drop,
00:21:29screen,
00:21:30gel,
00:21:31or Glenn it is.
00:21:33And Glenn has
00:21:34bumped out of bounds.
00:21:34Let's see the spot
00:21:35of the football.
00:21:36It'll be short of the first down.
00:21:38Ray Buchanan
00:21:39blasted him out of bounds.
00:21:42Looked to me like I saw
00:21:43a pair of hands
00:21:44just kind of
00:21:44flash
00:21:46by their,
00:21:47right where Bledsoe
00:21:47was throwing it.
00:21:49And it does
00:21:49go for a completion.
00:21:55So far,
00:21:56the best drive
00:21:56the Patriots have had today,
00:21:58isn't it?
00:21:58It is.
00:22:00As we pointed out earlier,
00:22:01their touchdowns
00:22:02resulting from
00:22:03short drives
00:22:04after turnovers.
00:22:05Third down in the yard,
00:22:06timeout New England.
00:22:09Something that Bledsoe
00:22:11didn't like
00:22:11because he had
00:22:1210 seconds
00:22:13to get the playoff.
00:22:14Instead calls timeout.
00:22:17A big third down play
00:22:18coming up
00:22:18when we return.
00:22:21Hope you'll join us
00:22:22Saturday,
00:22:231.30 Eastern time.
00:22:24Getting along,
00:22:25John's packed.
00:22:26Be up in Toronto
00:22:27for the Breeders' Cup
00:22:28at Woodbine Racecourse.
00:22:29First time we've had
00:22:30the Breeders' Cup
00:22:30outside the borders
00:22:32of the United States.
00:22:33Seven races,
00:22:34$11 million.
00:22:35Racing's richest day,
00:22:36will see Cigar
00:22:37one of the all-time greats
00:22:39in the
00:22:39$4 million
00:22:41Breeders' Cup Classic.
00:22:45Third and one.
00:22:47Bledsoe drops
00:22:48the fade.
00:22:50Cock-o!
00:22:50Jefferson!
00:22:51First down,
00:22:52New England.
00:22:53Inside the 20
00:22:54of the Colts.
00:22:56Boy,
00:22:56what a tough choice
00:22:58of plays.
00:22:59Third and short,
00:23:00and you go
00:23:00with the up route.
00:23:02Great pattern run
00:23:03by Sean Jefferson.
00:23:05This is beautifully
00:23:06thrown by Drew Bledsoe.
00:23:08Good separation
00:23:09by Jefferson
00:23:11to get away
00:23:11from the cornerback,
00:23:13Diedrich Mathis.
00:23:15Boy,
00:23:15that's a pretty pass.
00:23:1624-yard gain
00:23:18and a first down,
00:23:19New England.
00:23:19That's why you invest
00:23:20all you can around
00:23:21Drew Bledsoe.
00:23:23In years to come,
00:23:24he's going to win
00:23:24more than he's going
00:23:25to lose for you.
00:23:27Martin.
00:23:28Curtis Martin
00:23:29breaking free.
00:23:30Down to the
00:23:3110-yard line.
00:23:32And Ray Buchanan
00:23:33trips him up.
00:23:36About a 9-yard gain
00:23:37on first down.
00:23:38Tom,
00:23:38we're beginning
00:23:39to see the effects
00:23:40of those turnovers,
00:23:41the effect it has
00:23:42on the Colt defense.
00:23:43They're just not quite
00:23:44as up to it right now.
00:23:46They've kind of
00:23:46lost a little confidence.
00:23:47Jim Johnson,
00:23:48the defensive coordinator,
00:23:50his troops have
00:23:51basically done their job
00:23:53at the short field,
00:23:55giving New England
00:23:55an awful lot of confidence
00:23:57and his Colts
00:23:58now are a little
00:23:58discouraged.
00:24:02Again,
00:24:03Curtis Martin
00:24:03on the carry.
00:24:04Not much there
00:24:05this time.
00:24:06Only needed a yard
00:24:07for the first down.
00:24:09Stephen Grant
00:24:10at the bottom
00:24:10of the stack
00:24:11for the Colts.
00:24:14It's amazing
00:24:15how football games
00:24:16take twists
00:24:16and turns.
00:24:18As much as
00:24:19the Colts
00:24:20dominated the first
00:24:21quarter and a half
00:24:21of this football game,
00:24:22you put the ball
00:24:23on the ground,
00:24:23you allow the other
00:24:24team in
00:24:25and give them
00:24:26some confidence
00:24:27and Lindy and Funney
00:24:28is looking at
00:24:29the deployed defense
00:24:30there on Polaroid
00:24:31pictures
00:24:32to try to help him
00:24:33with what his offense
00:24:34is going to do.
00:24:35My best suggestion
00:24:35is just hang on
00:24:36to the football.
00:24:38It's going to be
00:24:39third down in a yard.
00:24:41Tight formation.
00:24:45Martin,
00:24:46he's got the first
00:24:47down to the five-yard line.
00:24:48First and goal,
00:24:49New England.
00:24:53So much of
00:24:54playing professional
00:24:55sports is a motion.
00:24:57So much of
00:24:57professional sports
00:24:58is just having
00:24:59confidence in
00:24:59if you do your job
00:25:01on your side
00:25:01of the ball,
00:25:02the other side
00:25:03of the ball
00:25:03will do their job.
00:25:04Well,
00:25:04the offense
00:25:05and the fumbles
00:25:08by Harrison
00:25:09and Gross
00:25:10have really
00:25:11sapped the confidence
00:25:12of this Colts defense.
00:25:14Tenth play
00:25:15of the drive
00:25:16coming up.
00:25:16Best drive
00:25:17of the day
00:25:17for New England.
00:25:18First and goal
00:25:19from the five
00:25:20of the Colts.
00:25:23Curtis Martin,
00:25:24the workhorse,
00:25:24cuts it back
00:25:25into the end zone
00:25:26for the touchdown.
00:25:27Ready.
00:25:31Play not designed
00:25:32to go to that side.
00:25:34Curtis Martin's
00:25:35great athletic ability
00:25:37cuts all the way
00:25:38back behind the center.
00:25:40That's the stuff
00:25:41you can't teach.
00:25:42Coaches try to take
00:25:43credit for it,
00:25:44but watch the way
00:25:45he makes the circle
00:25:46and goes back away
00:25:47from all of the pressure.
00:25:48That move right there.
00:25:49As much as coaches
00:25:52would like to say,
00:25:53I taught the kid that.
00:25:54No, no, no.
00:25:55He was born with that.
00:25:57Second touchdown
00:25:58of the day
00:25:58for Curtis Martin.
00:26:00And Vinatieri
00:26:01will try the extra points.
00:26:08And it's good.
00:26:09So the Patriots
00:26:13finally have it going.
00:26:14A 10-play,
00:26:1565-yard drive.
00:26:17Curtis Martin
00:26:18carries it across.
00:26:19The extra point
00:26:20makes it 23-6.
00:26:22Well, there's a flag down.
00:26:36It's not 24 yet.
00:26:38That's why the scoreboard
00:26:39still says 23.
00:26:42Long discussion, too.
00:26:43It looks like there's
00:26:44going to be something
00:26:44assessed on the kickoff.
00:26:46I didn't even see the flag,
00:26:47to be honest.
00:26:48There it is.
00:26:50Bucky saw it.
00:26:51Yeah, that's definitely
00:26:52a flag.
00:26:54I still don't see it
00:26:55on the field.
00:26:57It's down here
00:26:57in front of the marker,
00:27:00the sideline crew.
00:27:01Here's the call.
00:27:04Offsized by the defense.
00:27:06The kick is good.
00:27:08Ministered on the kickoff.
00:27:10And now it's 24-6.
00:27:13And now,
00:27:13as planned earlier,
00:27:14we'll take our break.
00:27:16And officially it is
00:27:1724-6.
00:27:18Thanks, Mr. Flag.
00:27:21Can Captain Comeback
00:27:24work his magic
00:27:25one more time?
00:27:26He's got his work
00:27:27cut out for him.
00:27:28Colts trailing the Patriots
00:27:2924-6.
00:27:311-57 left
00:27:32in the third.
00:27:39Military will kick off
00:27:40for New England.
00:27:42Aaron Bailey
00:27:43awaits it
00:27:43at the goal line.
00:27:44odd-looking kick
00:27:56which bounces
00:27:57to Bailey
00:27:57at the two.
00:27:59Aaron Bailey
00:28:00tripped up
00:28:02short of the 25-yard line.
00:28:04Teddy Bruschi
00:28:05with another
00:28:05special teams tackle
00:28:0624-6.
00:28:09We'll take a break.
00:28:0924-6 deep
00:28:15in the third.
00:28:15Many Colts fans think
00:28:16that's their
00:28:17presidential candidate,
00:28:18Captain Comeback
00:28:19Jim Harbaugh.
00:28:20And tonight on
00:28:21Dateline,
00:28:22what do Americans
00:28:23really want
00:28:23in a president?
00:28:25JFK Jr.
00:28:27and George Magazine
00:28:28join forces
00:28:29with Dateline
00:28:29to find the ideal candidate.
00:28:31Who is he?
00:28:32You may not know him,
00:28:33but our polls say
00:28:33you want him.
00:28:34Watch Dateline Sunday
00:28:35later tonight
00:28:36on NBC.
00:28:37And number four
00:28:44for president indeed,
00:28:45but he's going to
00:28:45have to pull this one out
00:28:46to keep his candidacy
00:28:48viable.
00:28:49Tony Mandrich
00:28:50replaces Jason Matthews
00:28:52at right tackle
00:28:53on this drive.
00:28:59Our ball's pass
00:29:00again in the flat.
00:29:01Gross with the reception
00:29:02in the second of the game
00:29:03after dropping two
00:29:04in the first half.
00:29:05Pounds across
00:29:06the 30-yard line
00:29:07where Ty Law
00:29:08moves him out of bounds.
00:29:11If Jim Harbaugh,
00:29:12Captain Comeback,
00:29:13pulls this one off,
00:29:14he's King Comeback
00:29:15as far as I'm concerned
00:29:16forever.
00:29:19Amazing how
00:29:19flat an effort
00:29:21it has been
00:29:21for the Indianapolis Colts.
00:29:23with very much
00:29:27to gain.
00:29:30Getting an assist
00:29:31from the Eagles
00:29:32right now
00:29:33and maybe the Dolphins
00:29:34won't gain any ground.
00:29:35There's
00:29:35false start
00:29:38by Doug Wydell.
00:29:39The left guard
00:29:40will cost the Colts five.
00:29:45False start
00:29:45on the offense.
00:29:46Number 64.
00:29:47Five yard penalty.
00:29:48Still second down.
00:29:49He is the
00:29:55left guard
00:29:55comes right up
00:29:56out of his stance
00:29:57and William McGinnis
00:29:58takes advantage of it.
00:29:59Defensive linemen
00:30:00will do that on you.
00:30:01You know?
00:30:02Don't try to get
00:30:02a free shot
00:30:03on anybody.
00:30:0558,000
00:30:06725
00:30:07silent fans
00:30:08at the moment.
00:30:08Play action fate.
00:30:18Harbaugh's in trouble.
00:30:19And Warren
00:30:20has it
00:30:21short hopping
00:30:22as Harbaugh
00:30:23went down
00:30:23under the rush
00:30:25by Chris Slade.
00:30:28Patriots defense
00:30:29beginning to take
00:30:30control here
00:30:31a little bit.
00:30:32Their choice
00:30:33has been
00:30:33a five defensive
00:30:35back set
00:30:35a four man rush
00:30:36and two linebackers.
00:30:37Slade with the
00:30:39good pressure
00:30:39got around
00:30:40Tony Mandarich
00:30:41and
00:30:42right in
00:30:43Harbaugh's face.
00:30:44Again,
00:30:45an incompletion
00:30:45doesn't count
00:30:46as a sack
00:30:46but a hit
00:30:48on Captain
00:30:49Comeback.
00:30:53Third down
00:30:54and ten.
00:30:59Harbaugh has time
00:31:01here
00:31:01and it's
00:31:04complete
00:31:04to Staveline.
00:31:05Brian Staveline
00:31:06by about a yard
00:31:10has enough
00:31:11for the first down
00:31:12in front of
00:31:12Otis
00:31:13my man
00:31:14Smith.
00:31:15Yeah,
00:31:15Otis
00:31:16my man
00:31:16Smith
00:31:16when he was
00:31:17with the Jets
00:31:17he made some
00:31:18comments about
00:31:19Jim Harbaugh.
00:31:19I said
00:31:20Harbaugh can't beat you.
00:31:21The Colts can't beat you.
00:31:22Well,
00:31:22he did.
00:31:23And he's
00:31:23released,
00:31:24picked up by
00:31:25New England.
00:31:25Here's Otis
00:31:26my man
00:31:26Smith again.
00:31:28Staveline with the
00:31:28first down
00:31:29keeps the drive
00:31:30alive.
00:31:30Hey,
00:31:31Otis
00:31:31my man
00:31:32Smith.
00:31:32That's what
00:31:33Harbaugh called him
00:31:33and had the last
00:31:35laugh in that game
00:31:36may not in this one.
00:31:39Again with time
00:31:40Gross on the reception
00:31:42for about five
00:31:43wrapped up by
00:31:44Todd Collins.
00:31:45Yeah,
00:31:45Gross must have
00:31:46gone in at halftime
00:31:46and put his hands
00:31:47on right.
00:31:48Got that stick-em.
00:31:49Well,
00:31:49maybe he had his
00:31:49palms out last
00:31:51in the first half.
00:31:52Got them palms in
00:31:52now and they're
00:31:53working a lot better.
00:31:54Final seconds
00:31:55of the third quarter.
00:32:01And that's the
00:32:02end of three
00:32:03in Indianapolis.
00:32:05Patriots up
00:32:0524-6
00:32:06will return
00:32:07after these
00:32:08messages
00:32:08and a word
00:32:09from your
00:32:10local station.

00:32:25Start the fourth
00:32:26quarter with the
00:32:27Patriots leading
00:32:27the Colts
00:32:2824-6.
00:32:30Harbaugh and his
00:32:31offense have
00:32:3227 minutes
00:32:33of possession time
00:32:34to only 18
00:32:35for New England
00:32:36and only two
00:32:37field goals
00:32:37to show for it.
00:32:39Screen pass,
00:32:40Gross.
00:32:41Blockers in front.
00:32:42He waits for him
00:32:43to make the play
00:32:43and gives time
00:32:44for Law
00:32:45to get in there
00:32:46and make the tackle.
00:32:48No captain
00:32:49comeback.
00:32:50Made his reputation
00:32:51and his nickname
00:32:52by these three games
00:32:54last season.
00:32:58And several other
00:32:59near misses
00:33:00including the AFC
00:33:01championship game
00:33:02which was what?
00:33:03A fingernail away
00:33:04from sending him
00:33:05to the Super Bowl.
00:33:05Yeah, the pass was
00:33:07that was in
00:33:07Three River Stadium
00:33:08the pass was
00:33:09there in Bailey
00:33:09and it's called
00:33:1160 Rockets
00:33:12and it almost
00:33:14took him
00:33:15to the Super Bowl.
00:33:17And they had
00:33:17the first down
00:33:18by half the length
00:33:19of the football
00:33:19and Cliff Gross
00:33:21we sort of
00:33:22singled him out
00:33:23as the go
00:33:24to the first half.
00:33:25He's made four catches
00:33:27here in the second half.
00:33:28Well, he's still got
00:33:28some making up to do.
00:33:29Those two fumbles
00:33:30that resulted in ten points
00:33:31he's not done yet
00:33:32to atone for the first half.
00:33:34Ball just across
00:33:40the Indianapolis 45.
00:33:42Reaction fake.
00:33:43First down pass
00:33:44Harbaugh
00:33:45behind Dilger
00:33:46and a flag comes flying.
00:33:49Vernon Lewis
00:33:50with interference
00:33:51on Cam Dilger.
00:33:54Now that's the
00:33:55defensive adjustment
00:33:56that Al Groh
00:33:57and the Patriots
00:33:58have made
00:33:58in this second half.
00:34:00They've gone an awful lot
00:34:01with the five
00:34:02defensive backs set
00:34:03and you're going to see
00:34:03Lewis hook up here
00:34:04with Ken Dilger.
00:34:06Now if Lewis is looking
00:34:07back at the ball
00:34:08they'll allow that contact
00:34:10but because he was
00:34:11staring right into the eyes
00:34:12of Ken Dilger
00:34:13they get the flag
00:34:15and the automatic
00:34:16first down.
00:34:17It amounts to a
00:34:1720-yard penalty
00:34:18on the interference
00:34:19and gives Indianapolis
00:34:21a first down
00:34:22at the 34-yard line
00:34:24of New England
00:34:25as Parcells argues
00:34:27to know if they will.
00:34:27Harbaugh
00:34:33again to the flats
00:34:34Lamont Warren
00:34:35Warren
00:34:36tracks down
00:34:37the sideline
00:34:38knocked out of bounds
00:34:38after a 9-yard game
00:34:40by Willie Clay.
00:34:41Now some linebacking
00:34:44his offense a little bit
00:34:45as long as they can
00:34:46hang on to the football
00:34:47again.
00:34:48The outlet receiver
00:34:49out in the flat
00:34:50zone
00:34:51you see the linebackers
00:34:52dropping
00:34:52watching the quarterback's
00:34:54eyes
00:34:54very soft over there
00:34:56on that side
00:34:57Lewis again
00:34:5743 the closest man
00:34:59along with Clay
00:34:59knocks him out.
00:35:04Second and one
00:35:04see if he goes
00:35:06for the end zone
00:35:06though they'll run
00:35:07with Warren
00:35:08and he has the
00:35:09first down
00:35:09just short of
00:35:11the 20-yard line.
00:35:13Todd Collins
00:35:14tripping up
00:35:14Lamont Warren
00:35:15but after he picked
00:35:18up another
00:35:18Indianapolis
00:35:19first down.
00:35:20Now drive started
00:35:21at 25
00:35:22well sustained
00:35:24here but
00:35:25in the first half
00:35:26we saw him
00:35:27down in this area
00:35:27four times
00:35:29that came away
00:35:29with just two
00:35:30field goals.
00:35:36Harbaugh's in
00:35:42the shotgun
00:35:42first down.
00:35:46Blitz came
00:35:46and the pass
00:35:48deflected by
00:35:49Willie McGinnis.
00:35:51Chris Slade
00:35:52was coming on
00:35:52a blitz.
00:35:55It'll be second
00:35:56and ten.
00:35:57And here come
00:36:07the extra
00:36:07DBs in the
00:36:08ballgame now
00:36:09for the Patriots.
00:36:12See if they got
00:36:13seven.
00:36:14Four.
00:36:14Yeah they got
00:36:15seven in there.
00:36:18Colts respond
00:36:19with three wide
00:36:20receivers.
00:36:23Shotgun formation.
00:36:26Harbaugh
00:36:27hit as he
00:36:28released it
00:36:28by Chris Slade.
00:36:30It was coming
00:36:31again.
00:36:31Got a hand on
00:36:32Harbaugh's passing
00:36:33arm just as he
00:36:34tried to deliver
00:36:35the football.
00:36:36Slade got around
00:36:37to Troy Ozien
00:36:38that time.
00:36:39Good speed rush.
00:36:40You're going to see
00:36:40the top of the
00:36:41screen here.
00:36:41Slade just come
00:36:42right around
00:36:43Troy Ozien.
00:36:44Hits his arm.
00:36:45Ozien loses
00:36:46his feet.
00:36:48And Slade
00:36:48right there to
00:36:49disrupt the pass
00:36:50and just drop it
00:36:51down on the ground.
00:36:52Harbaugh knows
00:36:53if I got protection
00:36:53that's a complete
00:36:54pass.
00:36:56Harbaugh said
00:36:5626 of 41
00:36:58223 yards
00:36:59with no
00:37:02touchdowns.
00:37:06Chase from the
00:37:07pocket.
00:37:08Slade
00:37:09after him
00:37:09he heaves it
00:37:10downfield.
00:37:11Dawkins can't
00:37:12get there.
00:37:14This is going to
00:37:15happen again.
00:37:16Down here in the
00:37:1620 yard line
00:37:17and all they come
00:37:17out with is a
00:37:19field goal.
00:37:20They had first and
00:37:2110 at the 20.
00:37:22Am I right Tom?
00:37:23Right.
00:37:24Did not gain an
00:37:26inch.
00:37:28There's
00:37:28McGinnis on
00:37:29Mandarich.
00:37:31When Harbaugh is
00:37:32flushed and
00:37:32actually he's
00:37:33flushed more by
00:37:34Ferrick Colons and
00:37:37Willie McGinnis
00:37:38just throws it out
00:37:39there in desperation.
00:37:41So 10 plays
00:37:43result in another
00:37:44field goal attempt.
00:37:47It'll be up by
00:37:51Blanchard and
00:37:52good from 38 yards.
00:37:56Third field goal of the
00:37:58day for Blanchard but
00:38:00little to show for
00:38:02holding the ball much
00:38:03of the game.
00:38:03Well the Colts have
00:38:07definitely been in a
00:38:08trot and not a
00:38:09gallop today with
00:38:10only nine points to
00:38:11show and trailing by
00:38:1315.
00:38:15Garadaki fielded by
00:38:19Meggett at the one.
00:38:22Dave Meggett sailing
00:38:24upfield bouncing off
00:38:25one tackler and then
00:38:26caught from behind
00:38:28and taken down.
00:38:31Sluts in the backup
00:38:32tight end with a
00:38:35special teams tackle.
00:38:37Update on the other
00:38:38scores around the
00:38:39NFL and this AFC
00:38:41East will tighten up
00:38:43a bit should the
00:38:44Colts lose.
00:38:45New England back in
00:38:46the race.
00:38:46Miami losing at the
00:38:48moment 28 to 18.
00:38:51And Buffalo facing
00:38:53the Jets.
00:38:55And of course
00:38:56Buffalo already has
00:38:57a win over the
00:38:59Colts who have
00:39:00beaten up on the
00:39:01AFC East over the
00:39:02last two years.
00:39:03Ten and three against
00:39:05AFC East opponents
00:39:06coming in to today.
00:39:08Curtis Martin, Bruce
00:39:10Armstrong blocking in
00:39:11front of him.
00:39:12Martin dancing his
00:39:16way for the gain of
00:39:17three or four yards
00:39:18when it didn't appear
00:39:19to be much there.
00:39:20David Tate forced him
00:39:21out of bounds.
00:39:21That was an awful lot of
00:39:22effort for just three
00:39:23yards.
00:39:24He never gives up on a
00:39:25play this young man.
00:39:29Ball is at the 31-yard
00:39:31line which will make it
00:39:33second down about eight.
00:39:3471 yards rushing today for
00:39:40Curtis.
00:39:41That's respectable for what
00:39:42for just how little the
00:39:45Pittman offense has had
00:39:46the ball.
00:39:47Actually two touchdowns
00:39:48instead of one.
00:39:51Bledsoe caught perfectly
00:39:54timed route by Sean
00:39:55Jefferson.
00:39:56Bledsoe had the ball there
00:39:57just as he made his break.
00:39:59Goes into Colt territory to
00:40:01the 49-yard line.
00:40:02And he spun Diedrich
00:40:03Mathis around like a one
00:40:05of those cheap tops you
00:40:06used to get at a when
00:40:07you were a kid.
00:40:07Watch this.
00:40:08That inside move.
00:40:09Wait, wait, what?
00:40:11No.
00:40:12That ball is halfway to
00:40:14Sean Jefferson.
00:40:16By the time he turns
00:40:17around and looks at it,
00:40:18beautifully done.
00:40:19Matthews, Mathis handled
00:40:21on that one.
00:40:2121 yards.
00:40:22First down for New
00:40:24England.
00:40:29Martin.
00:40:29Stacked up after a gain
00:40:33of three.
00:40:36Siragusa and Herod on
00:40:38the defense for the
00:40:39Colts.
00:40:40I realize this is
00:40:41premature.
00:40:4111-51 to go in the
00:40:43fourth quarter.
00:40:44But with New England
00:40:45leading 24-9.
00:40:47This was absolutely
00:40:48handed to the New
00:40:50England Patriots.
00:40:50Just the only thing
00:40:52missing is a nice big
00:40:53bow on top of the
00:40:55package courtesy of the
00:40:56Indianapolis Colts.
00:40:57No.
00:40:58But he has gotten a
00:40:58real gift.
00:40:59He and his team have
00:41:00gotten a real gift
00:41:01here today.
00:41:13Play action fake to
00:41:14Martin.
00:41:15Bledsoe throws it away.
00:41:19Jefferson closest to it
00:41:20but he was pretty well
00:41:21covered by Ray
00:41:23Buchanan.
00:41:24His quarterback's now
00:41:25got to be careful.
00:41:25They allow them to
00:41:27throw that ball away
00:41:27but you've got to make
00:41:29sure you get outside the
00:41:30tackle.
00:41:31That was very close to
00:41:33Drew Bledsoe throwing the
00:41:34ball away which would
00:41:35have been intentional
00:41:36grounding.
00:41:37He can't be so
00:41:38nonchalant about it
00:41:39anymore.
00:41:41Bledsoe is 12 of 20
00:41:43for 126 yards.
00:41:44Pass is caught.
00:41:55First catch of the day for
00:41:56Ben Coates the tight end
00:41:58and spot of the football
00:42:01fairly generous gives him
00:42:03a first down.
00:42:05That is really generous.
00:42:06But marking where the ball
00:42:14is always a pretty
00:42:15inexact science.
00:42:17You're going to get your
00:42:18share and you're going to
00:42:19miss some.
00:42:21But Coates kind of flanked
00:42:22out there a little bit.
00:42:25And he just goes up in the
00:42:26air in that spot where he
00:42:27catches it.
00:42:29I don't know.
00:42:31Very hard to say where the
00:42:34officials are right or wrong
00:42:35with that spot but it
00:42:36results in a first down.
00:42:41Look on a day like this
00:42:42for Indianapolis and
00:42:44Lindy and Bunny that's
00:42:46the way it goes.
00:42:47Everything else is going
00:42:47on.
00:42:48Absolutely.
00:42:49I stand by my original
00:42:51statement.
00:42:51I love this pretty
00:42:51generous spot.
00:42:53No argument for me.
00:43:01Parcells and company
00:43:02needed this win and they
00:43:03are leading 24-9.
00:43:07Officially a seven yard
00:43:08gain on the completion
00:43:09of Ben Coates.
00:43:12And from the 38 yard line
00:43:14the Patriots drive
00:43:15continues.
00:43:22Curtis Martin bounces to
00:43:24the outside.
00:43:26Short gain Ray Buchanan
00:43:27with run support on the
00:43:29tackle.
00:43:29So Indianapolis had a game
00:43:34lead on Buffalo and Miami.
00:43:36Miami's losing at the
00:43:37moment.
00:43:38If they do lose and New
00:43:39England wins they'll be
00:43:40tied at four and three.
00:43:42Buffalo and the Jets play
00:43:43later.
00:43:45Buffalo heavily favored
00:43:46which would make them five
00:43:48and two and tied with
00:43:50Indianapolis for the lead.
00:43:50Actually when you say
00:43:52Buffalo.
00:43:52Buffalo.
