00:00:00Good afternoon, everyone. I'm Don Crickie with Beasley Reese. If there is one quality that defines this Buffalo team, it is optimism. The Bills are going for their fifth AFC title in the last seven years. And as quarterback, Jim Kelly says, Beasley, every time we take the field, we expect to win, although it looked like a long shot in their opener.
00:00:20Well, they were down 17 to nothing to the Giants last. It did look bad, but we talked to Jim Kelly, and he said that at no point, I mean, he knew his team was going to come back and win. It's a veteran football team, and I tell you, they know what they're going to do. Here's a shot last week that woke the Bills up. It's a 60-yard shot to Andre Reid, a veteran football team, knows that they can come back, and they certainly did it.
00:00:43The Patriots have reason to be optimistic. They've beaten Buffalo three straight, although right now the Patriots' great young quarterback, Drew Bledsoe, is struggling, had a bad game at Miami, might be feeling the scrutiny, which has been awful heavy from the media and the fans and everyone involved.
00:00:59I think this is a critical year for Drew Bledsoe. He set the league on fire a couple of years ago, had two interceptions last week and a loss to Miami. They have been hitting him a little bit in the press, questioning whether or not he's got the confidence.
00:01:11And he'll get some help today. His number one draft choice, Terry Glenn, will make his NFL debut, and he's got a lot of speed.
00:01:19Patriots are hurting at wide receiver, but they do have Glenn in the lineup for the first time, and he runs about as fast as anybody in football.
00:01:26The kickoff is coming up after this.
00:01:31His team has defeated the Buffalo Bills three straight, including two here in Orchard Park, and one of the reasons they've done so well, the Patriots, particularly last year,
00:01:41was rookie Curtis Martin, who has just two tremendous games against the Bills, Beasley, and Ben Coates, who's been unstoppable.
00:01:47Well, nobody knew much about Curtis Martin. He came in and rushed for a combined 275 yards and really set everybody on the net.
00:01:55Everybody knows Ben Coates. He's absolutely fabulous, and has played very well against the Buffalo Bills.
00:02:00Marv Levy, who was just inducted his name to go on the Bills' Wall of Fame, a very emotional speech by Marv before the game.
00:02:07As Manatieri kicks off for the Patriots, here is Mould, the rookie from Mississippi State.
00:02:12The Bills' top draft choice watches the ball go out of the end zone, and the Bills will start from their 20.
00:02:18As Jim Kelly with the K-Gun offense, ready to go to work.
00:02:23Kelly slimmed down, his arm feeling as good as it ever has.
00:02:26They shot a new player, Corbin Lucina, at left guard.
00:02:30Brown is out in the backfield.
00:02:33Thurman Thomas will be in there with Jim Kelly much of the time.
00:02:36Andre Reid back in peak form.
00:02:38Quinn Early, the other wide receiver, a thousand-yard receiver last year at New Orleans.
00:02:42Tony Klein will join Lonnie Johnson as an extra tight end.
00:02:45We'll see a lot of two tight ends for the Bills.
00:02:48As they open now in the three-wide receiver set.
00:02:52Thurman Thomas alone set back and coming to throw on first down.
00:02:55Lost the ball downfield.
00:02:56And incomplete, he was looking at his tight end, Lonnie Johnson, who might be a guy they'll target much of the day.
00:03:02As we look at the Patriots on defense.
00:03:06Slade, Collins, Wyman, and McGinnis.
00:03:09The nickel defense starting out because of the Bills.
00:03:11No huddle offense.
00:03:13Ricky Reynolds, high lawsuit.
00:03:15Law two very good cover corners.
00:03:17Secondary deep backs.
00:03:19The safeties are something the Buffalo Bills are going to go after.
00:03:21As Thurman Thomas runs and not very far as he's quickly shut down Mike Jones making the stop for the Patriots.
00:03:29The Patriots are lined up in their traditional offense that, I'm sorry, defense that puts the two corners up on the wide receivers.
00:03:37You'll see them put a lot of pressure.
00:03:39They had some success with some blitzing.
00:03:42And they'll offer some of that because Buffalo had some trouble with it last week.
00:03:46A lot of trouble.
00:03:47Bills his sack.
00:03:48Seven times Kelly's sack by the giant defense as he goes out of the shotgun out.
00:03:53Takes a look.
00:03:53Fires the ball.
00:03:54Not close.
00:03:55So the Patriot defense stands tall in this first series.
00:03:59Three and out.
00:03:59Kelly missing two throws and a run went nowhere.
00:04:02There's a real gamble by New England that paid off.
00:04:04They blitzed number 23, Terry Ray, up the right side of their defensive unit.
00:04:09It wasn't a lot of pressure placed, but Kelly did see it and overthrew his receiver.
00:04:17There's the deep man as Chris Moore will kick the ball to David Meggett.
00:04:22Moore, a very high putter.
00:04:23Very few of his are returned.
00:04:24That's his specialty.
00:04:26Meggett will return this one, though, from his 37th.
00:04:29One block.
00:04:30And Meggett cuts ahead and gets to the 43-yard line.
00:04:34So Bledsoe and the Patriots will go on offense with very good field position to start their first offensive.
00:04:39Drive of the day.
00:04:41Bledsoe hit half his throws wet last week at Miami.
00:04:44He was intercepted twice.
00:04:45The first INT run back for a touchdown off the opening drive.
00:04:49Lewis Oliver.
00:04:51Bruce Armstrong, a left tackle, has a career record of doing very well against Buffalo's great pass rusher, Bruce Smith.
00:04:59Two rookie wide receivers, John Cherry Glen, a top draft choice.
00:05:03And Dietrich Jell, a free agent.
00:05:11Crowd kicks in.
00:05:12To the run they go.
00:05:13Here is Curtis Martin looking for room.
00:05:16And Chris Spielman, who had 17 tackles last week, is in to make the stop.
00:05:22Inside linebacker who came from Detroit.
00:05:24Washington's played well at nose tackle, playing on a bad ankle today.
00:05:27Bruce Smith really won the game with a sack of Dave Brown that caused a fumble.
00:05:32Rice Popp, the NFL Defensive Player of the Year.
00:05:35The Buffalo Bills on both sides of the ball loaded with all-star talent.
00:05:39Again, they go to the run.
00:05:42And this time, Curtis Martin breaks it as he did a year ago.
00:05:45A penalty marker comes in from the back judge.
00:05:48As Martin broke it for 12 yards on a second and 10 play.
00:05:52Spielman got him at way downfield, Beasley.
00:05:55Well, one thing to note, as we see the penalties of face masks against the Buffalo Bills,
00:06:01is that it's wet here, it's rainy, the wind is blowing.
00:06:05Personal style, face mask, number 28, defense, first down.
00:06:12The wind is blowing the sheets in sideways out here.
00:06:16So you're going to see a lot of running.
00:06:18And who better to do it than this man because he's had so much success.
00:06:22Number 28, Curtis Martin, against the Buffalo Bills.
00:06:24It's very good blocked by number 33, the fullback, Sam Gash, springing Curtis Martin.
00:06:31First down, New England, down at the Bills' 30-yard line.
00:06:35Bledsoe takes a look, close in the flat.
00:06:39And the ball is dropped by his fullback, Sam Gash.
00:06:41Bryce Hoff was covering on the play.
00:06:44So it'll be second down and 10.
00:06:46Patriots really misfired with those four turnovers at Miami.
00:06:49It was a 24-10 game at the end.
00:06:53Bledsoe has felt the wrath of his coach.
00:06:55Parcells has told him, and Bledsoe agrees, that part of playing the position is withstanding the scrutiny of bad games.
00:07:02But Bledsoe has an absolute almost unlimited talent.
00:07:06First player picked in the draft when he came out of Washington State.
00:07:11Delayed draw.
00:07:13And the Bills shut it down.
00:07:14Curtis Martin is struck down by Bryce Puff and Chris Spielman.
00:07:19Drew Smith putting pressure on inside.
00:07:23Take a real good look at number 78.
00:07:25He's one of the best in the business.
00:07:26Left side of your screen.
00:07:28Dash is inside.
00:07:29He's knocked down.
00:07:30Gets back up.
00:07:31Grabs enough jersey to hold on and allow his teammates to come in to help.
00:07:36Go, go, go.
00:07:38Third down and 11 now.
00:07:41Bledsoe has to throw.
00:07:42And the Patriots go into a three-wide receiver set.
00:07:45Megat's coming out of the backfield.
00:07:48And they're going to make it on a draw.
00:07:51And Dave Megat's inside the 20.
00:07:53And he has a first down for New England.
00:07:54So a great play called by the Patriots.
00:07:57Catches the Buffalo Bills in an all-out pass rush.
00:08:01An 11-yard gain on third and 11.
00:08:04It's a first down.
00:08:06Well, this is excellent play calling.
00:08:09Megat acts like he's checking to see whether or not he has the block.
00:08:12Drew Bledsoe walks over, slips the ball underneath, right in his stomach.
00:08:16And just super running by David Megat as always.
00:08:19Well, we talked to David Megat yesterday.
00:08:20He talked about one of the things about being a veteran is knowing and learning what you can't do,
00:08:24where you can't go.
00:08:26John waits for the hold open.
00:08:27Then he's shot in there.
00:08:28Here's Curtis Martin.
00:08:30The second year back from Pittsburgh.
00:08:32Works his way near sideline before the strong safety.
00:08:34Henry Jones knocks him out after a gain of about four.
00:08:38The Buffalo Bills talk about Curtis Martin in terms that are surprising for a guy who's
00:08:44only in his second year and who's really only done it one time.
00:08:48They compare him to Hall of Fame backs.
00:08:50I mean, it's the respect that they have for the guy is unbelievable.
00:08:53Look at that.
00:08:541,487 yards last year.
00:08:56And as we showed you, 275 of those yards against Buffalo last year.
00:09:00Yeah, Spielman said, Beasley, the only harder guy in the league to tackle is Barry Sanders of the Lions.
00:09:06He rates Curtis Martin second.
00:09:07Martin running again with those quick cutback moves and good lead blocking by Sam Gash.
00:09:12Marleau Perry, an outside linebacker, making the stop for the Bills.
00:09:16But the ball is advanced down close to the 11-yard line.
00:09:19Short of a first down, third and two.
00:09:21Yeah, Spielman said that Martin was like trying to get a wet fish, you know, in the boat.
00:09:26Just kind of a guy that squirms and bounces around.
00:09:31Martin was shut down last week at Miami.
00:09:33Only 23 yards rushing and 11 carries.
00:09:38But as pointed out earlier, he had 275 yards in two games against the Bills last year.
00:09:45Let's go.
00:09:45Goes to the run on third and two.
00:09:48And the Patriots on a slant counter come back with Curtis Martin,
00:09:52who's knocked down by Bryce Paupp and another inside linebacker, Mark Maddox.
00:09:57But they have a first down.
00:09:58It is first and goal, New England.
00:10:00And see, this is the type of offense that Bill Parcells is very comfortable running.
00:10:06He's tried to throw it one time, and that was a short little throw.
00:10:09Everything else has been relying on his offensive line.
00:10:12The good lead blocking by his fullback, Sam Gash, and running by Curtis Martin.
00:10:17Curtis Martin staying right on top of Sam Gash, letting him find the hole.
00:10:20And he shoots in behind it.
00:10:22Here's Martin again into the Bills defense.
00:10:24Spielman with another rocket hit.
00:10:26But Martin again has plus yards as he's down close to Buffalo's seven-yard line.
00:10:32Well, this is the personal challenge against the Buffalo Bills defense right now.
00:10:36People like Chris Spielman, they are going to, you know, it's a matter of pride now.
00:10:40These guys are just pounding, pounding, pounding into Buffalo.
00:10:43And you've got a lot of pride, like Spielman and Smith and all those guys.
00:10:47Bryce Puff, they'll try to make a play here.
00:10:50Ben Coates also could figure large in the play coming up.
00:10:55Like, so it all goes back to the run.
00:10:56Martin inside the five.
00:10:58He's down to the three.
00:10:59So a critical down comes up now for both teams.
00:11:02It'll be third down and goal from the three-yard line.
00:11:05Phil Hansen, the left end for the Bills with the tackler.
00:11:07Boy, I can't emphasize how important this drive is for Bill Parcells and his offense.
00:11:13If he can allow Armstrong, Roberts, Wallabaugh, Cratch, Lane,
00:11:17those guys to line up and just push the Buffalo Bills out of the way,
00:11:21this would figure in exactly into his game plan.
00:11:25His game plan is largely Curtis Martin so far.
00:11:28Eight carries, 25 yards for Martin.
00:11:32Third and goal.
00:11:33Penalty markers are down.
00:11:37We'll see if they came down before the snap of the ball.
00:11:44As extra receivers not coming on the field.
00:11:48It is a legal procedure call against the Patriots.
00:11:52Well, I believe it was number 87.
00:11:54False start.
00:11:55Moving prior to the snap.
00:11:57Number 87.
00:11:58Offense, five yards.
00:12:00Third down.
00:12:01So, closest to you, bottom of your screen, there goes Ben Coates.
00:12:04He was the primary target on that play.
00:12:08And a little too eager to get out into the paddock.
00:12:11Plexo was going to try to hit him for a touchdown.
00:12:15Third and goal from the eight-yard line for the Patriots.
00:12:17No score.
00:12:18Negus in the backfield.
00:12:21Plexo, under the rush.
00:12:22Falls on the field.
00:12:25Bruce Smith with the shot, bringing the ball.
00:12:27Then it's lost by the Bills as they try to recover.
00:12:31And the Patriots will get a long field goal try.
00:12:34So, Smith makes another almost-made play that can turn a whole game.
00:12:39But his teammate couldn't hold on to the loose ball.
00:12:41Well, Bruce Smith is known for this play in this situation.
00:12:46Now, his number one nemesis, Bruce Armstrong, in a one-on-one battle, lost his block against
00:12:52Bruce Smith.
00:12:53You see the ball coming out, and the Patriots very fortunate to fall on that football.
00:12:57But Bruce Smith has done that for so many years.
00:13:00It's a big play at the right time.
00:13:01Adam Venatieri, the rookie place kicker from South Dakota State.
00:13:06The try will be from the 33-yard line, a 43-yard attempt.
00:13:10Jim Jeffcoat blew that for the Bills.
00:13:12He only plays seven get plays a game.
00:13:14And he tried to run with it rather than fall on it.
00:13:16And the Patriots capitalized.
00:13:18So, Venatieri drives it through.
00:13:21And it is a 3-0 game, New England.
00:13:24Defensive coordinator, Bruce Smith, delivers the goods again.
00:13:28But the Patriots get the ball back on the fumble by Bledsoe and then kick the field goal.
00:13:32Boy, Bruce just does it over and over again.
00:13:36Beating his blocker, forcing the fumble.
00:13:40He's got to go down as one of the greatest pass rushers in the history of the game.
00:13:45I think he's got 125-plus sacks right now.
00:13:48And you know what?
00:13:50He's in a bit of a contract dispute.
00:13:52More than a bit, yeah.
00:13:52Well, it's quiet right now, but only because of Bruce's respect for the season.
00:13:57Listen, it's a rare offering by an NFL player.
00:14:01You know, you see so many guys that hold out no matter what.
00:14:05His main complaint is that he's the 19th highest paid defensive player in the league.
00:14:10And he doesn't feel like that's right.
00:14:14Venatieri will now kick off.
00:14:17He has been good.
00:14:18They cut the net bar at New England because Venatieri showed an ability to kick the ball into and out of the end zone for touchbacks.
00:14:25He did it on his first kickoff today.
00:14:28He hits another big kickoff.
00:14:30This one will come back.
00:14:31Here's the great young returner, Eric Moles.
00:14:35I believe he said he could be one of the greatest kick returners ever.
00:14:38And he looks all that part because he takes it out to the 24-yard line.
00:14:42He led the nation in kick returns at Mississippi State.
00:14:46He ran that one back about 26 yards.
00:14:49So the Bills go on offense until we come back.
00:14:54You, you, and you have the right to play sports until the cows come home.
00:14:59You have the right to assemble.
00:15:01You have the right to be equipped.
00:15:03You have the right to free speech.
00:15:05But anything you say can be held against you.
00:15:07That's life.
00:15:08Liberty.
00:15:09And the pursuit of the goal.
00:15:11But you don't have the right to remain thirsty.
00:15:13Not when there's Gatorade.
00:15:14Because every athlete has the right to be quenched.
00:15:17These are your rights.
00:15:19Now get out there and exercise them.
00:15:21Litton and Dyer Straits should they lose today.
00:15:24They could be two games behind three teams in their division.
00:15:27Bills, the Colts, and the Dolphins at day's end.
00:15:30The Colts and the Dolphins are both favored today.
00:15:33Thurman Thomas runs and the Patriots shut it down.
00:15:36Middle linebacker Ted Johnson, who was blocked very well by the Dolphins last week,
00:15:40shoots the gap, makes the stop.
00:15:43Be checking here, Beasley.
00:15:44Well, what they do is they get still photos of the offensive formations
00:15:48from the other teams looking over.
00:15:51Interception.
00:15:52A big blitz on Jim Kelly.
00:15:55And Chris Slade gets the ball with a room service interception.
00:16:00He almost dropped the tray.
00:16:04That was it.
00:16:05Wait a minute.
00:16:06The holding call against the defense, it appears.
00:16:08So the Buffalo offense is coming back out.
00:16:10The play could be negated.
00:16:11Marcel's has him ready this week.
00:16:16Coming with blitzes.
00:16:22Terry Ray, one of the safeties, just comes flying through.
00:16:26A strong safety.
00:16:27Well, this is the second time that Terry Ray has been called in the blitz.
00:16:32The New England player was touched by his own man and hit the ground.
00:16:39Therefore, he's not down by contact.
00:16:42Get up, put the ball down.
00:16:43When Buffalo picked it up, it was still a live ball.
00:16:46First down.
00:16:46So Dale Hamer gives a whole new reading, and it's the Bills ball and a first down.
00:16:54Look at number 23, Terry Ray unblocked right in on Kelly, but as he always does, he stands
00:16:59and takes the shot.
00:17:00Chris Slade bobbles the ball.
00:17:02Let's watch what happens at the end here.
00:17:04See, he was touched by his own man.
00:17:06He put the ball down.
00:17:07He was touched by his own man, so it was still live.
00:17:10Now Kelly again throws.
00:17:12This time he makes the completion to his rookie number one draft choice, Eric Moulds, who makes
00:17:16a terrific play on a high-thrown wobbly pass that carries the ball out across to the, about
00:17:24the 32-yard line, he'll be out of bounds.
00:17:26Gain about almost seven on the play.
00:17:28They'll call it second down and four.
00:17:30Don, Chris Slade will have to, boy, he won't live that down for a long time.
00:17:35He put a live ball on the ground, and Buffalo picked it up.
00:17:40There he is now.
00:17:41He goes back to the run, and the Bills go with Thurman Thomas, weaving his way across
00:17:45the 40s.
00:17:47He's ahead for a gain on the play of eight yards, nine yards they give him, and it's a
00:17:52first down for the Bills.
00:17:53Stopped by Willie Clay and Terry Ray, the safety.
00:17:56A little thermolation here.
00:17:57You see the backside lineman pull, and we've seen Thurman over the years run this play so
00:18:02well.
00:18:03Jumping out of traffic there.
00:18:04He had 97 yards left against the Giants, still running great.
00:18:08Kelly again throws a high pass.
00:18:10He's intercepted on the play by Ricky Reynolds.
00:18:13So Kelly, off target all day, has this one skip off the hands of his receiver.
00:18:19It was the tight end Lonnie Johnson, and it's picked off by Ricky Reynolds, one of the Patriot
00:18:24cornerbacks on New England, again, with great field position.
00:18:27Now, I want everyone to remember, it is raining.
00:18:30I don't know if you can see it at home, but it is sheets of very light, fine mist.
00:18:35Very difficult for Jim Kelly to hold on to the ball, and we're going to see a lot of this
00:18:38today.
00:18:391996 Atlanta, what better place to ask people about the taste of Wheaties, the breakfast of
00:18:47champions.
00:18:48It's got that good whole wheat flavor.
00:18:49The reception shows that Jim Kelly is going to take a short three-step drop.
00:18:54He thinks he's throwing a stop route to Andre Reid.
00:18:57The tight end reaches up Lonnie Johnson and taps it, and it goes straight to the Patriots.
00:19:03Now, the Patriots leading 3-0, go back to the run, and here's Curtis Martin.
00:19:09Here's 10th carry of the game, carries him inside the Bills' 35-yard line, where Spielman
00:19:14makes yet another tackle for the Bills, but he does it downfield as the Patriots are running
00:19:18well.
00:19:20Well, this is exactly what the Patriots dreamed of.
00:19:23Bob Crash, number 61, and Sam Gash leading the way around the corner.
00:19:27They do an excellent job of opening a small lane for Curtis.
00:19:30And, man, that's exactly what the Patriots want to do.
00:19:3532 yards for Martin so far.
00:19:39Terrific block by the pulling guard, Bob Crash.
00:19:43End up, up the middle, a first back to Sam Gash, and he is stuck hard.
00:19:47Coming up to get him was the 325-pound Buffalo nose tackle, Ted Washington.
00:19:54Number 92, but the Patriots again in long field goal range.
00:19:59It was interesting, Beasley, at the outset of the game, the Patriots won the toss, but
00:20:03they elected to go with the win.
00:20:05They have the win at their back in this opening quarter.
00:20:07It is gusting very hard.
00:20:10You know, I'm expecting the Buffalo Bills to make some adjustments in their offense,
00:20:15maybe go with a little eight-man front, because I think it's clear, certainly clear to me,
00:20:19I'm sure it's clear to the coaches, that New England's just going to pound it.
00:20:22But I would start eight-man fronts, walk my safety up a little bit,
00:20:25get more people at the point of attack to stop the run.
00:20:31Patriots getting the great blocking angles on the Bills defenders
00:20:34and breaking Curtis Martin for 32 yards so far.
00:20:38A limited number of throws by Drew Bledsoe so far early in the game.
00:20:41Terry Dwan, number 88, out of Ohio State, the number one draft choice of the Patriots.
00:20:46Some teams had him rated as the number two player in the whole draft last year.
00:20:52Very interesting story.
00:20:53Signed a $12 million contract.
00:20:57Ourself would have preferred to draft for a defense that the scouting department overruled.
00:21:02They had Glenn rated so high.
00:21:04He can run by everybody, although he still is somewhat troubled by the hamstring.
00:21:08Lexo looks, goes to the flat, and the ball is Aaron, looking at Sam Gass.
00:21:13Good coverage by Bryce Poff, who can not only rush the passer, he can cover backs out.
00:21:18Terry Glenn was open across the middle, but it looks like probably because of the rain,
00:21:22Drew Bledsoe is opting to go straight to his release receivers right now,
00:21:28that being the backs out of the backfield.
00:21:30And so far, that's not working.
00:21:32But Terry Glenn had a little pocket in the seam, in the zone, downfield.
00:21:36On second and ten, Glenn has slipped wide to the right.
00:21:42Back to the run, look at Curtis Martin shooting to the gas.
00:21:45Bryce Poff comes up quickly.
00:21:46The NFL defensive player of the year a season ago, knocks him down after a gain of about three, almost four.
00:21:56I can see Poff.
00:21:56What a mistake the Packers made, letting him get away as an unrestricted free agent.
00:22:01Leading the NFL in sacks with 17 and a half.
00:22:04The Bills, as a team, led the NFL with 49 sacks.
00:22:08Right now, Beasley, they almost lead the league in sacks allowed.
00:22:11Seven last week.
00:22:13And they get back in the Patriots' backfield.
00:22:16On third down and seven.
00:22:17Bledsoe stands in.
00:22:24A diving attempt at the ball by the rookie Terry Glenn.
00:22:27And Irvin was covering on the play.
00:22:30And Adam Venateri comes out for a long field goal with the wind at his back.
00:22:35Well, Terry Glenn is coming from a lower hamstring pull.
00:22:40Number 88 in the inside of your formation there.
00:22:43Looking in breakout.
00:22:44Trying to get to the ball.
00:22:46Not quite able to.
00:22:48The ball just a little bit far outside.
00:22:51And Drew Bledsoe, of course, that's the kind of pass that you have to throw before the guys even open.
00:22:57A little bit far out.
00:22:58Has been good from 42.
00:22:59Now he tries from 45.
00:23:01And he hits the upright.
00:23:02Nick Terram's up.
00:23:03No good.
00:23:06The Patriots unable to capitalize on a second interception of Jim Kelly today.
00:23:11Mills have the ball in a moment.
00:23:16Mitsubishi Motors presents Diamonds in the Rough.
00:23:20In the most dramatic single-season turnaround in NFL history, the Baltimore Bulls.
00:23:28Jim Kelly struggling early, but that doesn't bother Jim Kelly.
00:23:32As we pointed out, this man is an optimist with a short memory.
00:23:35He puts mistakes behind him and goes right on.
00:23:37That's one thing.
00:23:37He doesn't let negative developments get him down.
00:23:40No.
00:23:40You want to know why?
00:23:41Because he has a history, he can go back into the recesses of his memory and remember great things.
00:23:48He knows he can do it because he's done it before.
00:23:50He's wary of the Patriots, though.
00:23:52We asked him about losing three straight times.
00:23:54And we've had problems with the Patriots ever since I've been in Buffalo.
00:23:56Here's Eric Mould going to end around.
00:23:58Eric Mould.
00:23:59The rookie number one draft choice.
00:24:01What a fine-looking receiver.
00:24:02He is at 215 pounds.
00:24:04He's one of the fastest players on the field.
00:24:06You know, he came into our meeting and looks like a god.
00:24:09I mean, he's just built like you draw a wide receiver.
00:24:13And just a good run, solid, you know, attacking the defender at the end of the run there.
00:24:186'1", 215-pound Eric Mould from Mississippi State.
00:24:23Now in second and short, Herman Thomas cuts back.
00:24:26And the Patriots do a good job sealing off the gap, shutting him down after a gain of only about a yard.
00:24:31Ted Johnson playing well at middle linebacker for New England.
00:24:34Makes another tackle.
00:24:36New England defense has been impressive today.
00:24:38They've filled all of the gaps.
00:24:41Ted Johnson, as you mentioned, he's a big guy.
00:24:44240.
00:24:45In the middle, number 52, playing very well against the run.
00:24:51Third and short.
00:24:52And the Patriots look like they've stopped it.
00:24:55The second effort by Thurman Thomas has propelled him to about the 47.
00:25:00Thurman, so it might be going to give him the first down where he got the ball.
00:25:03Patriots first hit stopped him, but Thurman kept chugging and got there.
00:25:09Thurman.
00:25:12Seven straight years with a thousand or more yards.
00:25:14It's not bad for a second-round draft choice.
00:25:16Nope.
00:25:17It's not bad.
00:25:18They're in that hurry-up offense.
00:25:20Build it out of huddle.
00:25:21Kelly stands in.
00:25:22He's been under direct.
00:25:23Here's a long ball going for it way downfield.
00:25:26And shield it from the ball.
00:25:27Here's a marker coming in.
00:25:29Russell Copeland was running behind the defender, Jimmy Hitchcock.
00:25:34And Hitchcock was shielding Copeland from the ball with his base to the ball.
00:25:38It's illegal.
00:25:38And the Bills will have it first and ten at the 11-yard line on penalty yards.
00:25:43Jimmy Hitchcock is only in his second year in the league.
00:25:46He's got to learn to read the receiver.
00:25:48You see the receiver's turned his back to the goal line.
00:25:50That means it's a sharp throw.
00:25:52Whenever a receiver starts to roll backwards, you know his body language is saying,
00:25:57short throw, let me spin around.
00:25:59I can make the interception.
00:26:01That's a mistake by a second-year man, a young player who's got some good talent,
00:26:06but a very good call by the officials.
00:26:07You can't do that.
00:26:08You cannot shield the receiver away from the ball.
00:26:10And Andre Reid Beasley out right now with a drawing pull.
00:26:14We don't know if we'll see him back in.
00:26:15As Kelly fakes, hands off then to Thurman Thomas.
00:26:19And the Patriots are reading number 34 all the way.
00:26:24Wyman, a rookie defensive tackle, throws him back.
00:26:28Thurman's options are really limited with no blocking back in there with him being cleared.
00:26:32No, they really are.
00:26:34And Thurman has had success when you allow him to pick his own places to run.
00:26:39And they really try to rough him up here.
00:26:41And that's not a bad option.
00:26:44They're trying to pull the ball away from him.
00:26:47And Thurman didn't like that, of course.
00:26:49Here's a blitz picked up.
00:26:51But Thurman Thomas has no room to start.
00:26:54Now, the Patriots came with a free safety blitz and Willie play.
00:26:57Willie McGinnis was in there.
00:27:00They're shooting everybody at Jim Kelly like the Giants did a week ago.
00:27:03You see both safeties coming in this time.
00:27:05And I think that's a direct result of film study.
00:27:08The Giants had success sending safeties and corners off the corner and up the middle
00:27:13in their game last week against Buffalo.
00:27:16And so the Patriots are copying that same move.
00:27:18This game is going to be a street fight all the way.
00:27:21And it might go to overtime.
00:27:22Here is Thurman Thomas looking for room.
00:27:25None is there.
00:27:26Patriot defense again stands in against the run.
00:27:28And Hitchcock was called for the penalty, makes the tackle.
00:27:32And the Bills will try a field goal into the win.
00:27:35But Steve Christie, who kicks in wind about as well as anybody in football, maybe better.
00:27:40Very interesting play there.
00:27:41They pulled Glenn Parker all the way from the back side.
00:27:44It looked like it was developing into a successful opportunity for Buffalo.
00:27:49But the Patriots defense is really running to the ball very well today.
00:27:54Chris Moore, the punter, is Christie's holder.
00:27:56Christie had a great game against the Giants.
00:27:59Three for three, including the winner in overtime.
00:28:00And look at that, into the win.
00:28:01He just powers the ball.
00:28:0333 yards out.
00:28:04It would have been good from 50 into the win.
00:28:07And the Bills have tied the Patriots.
00:28:09New England gets it when we come back.
00:28:12Little wind does not stop the fans of the Buffalo Bills.
00:28:16They're used to some real tricky stuff falling out of the sky around here.
00:28:21Place is packed.
00:28:22There's a big crowd on this field also, which makes throwing to the sidelines difficult.
00:28:26No, Kelly's an expert at it, although he's struggled today throwing the ball.
00:28:30So it's the whole Bills offense.
00:28:31They have six yards passing offense, minus 16 yards rushing.
00:28:37And Bledsoe's 0-3 throwing.
00:28:39So these kickers bloom larger than ever.
00:28:42Benatari's hit one, missed another from 45.
00:28:44Christie hit his only attempt to tie the game.
00:28:46Loose ball on the field.
00:28:52David Meggett picks it up.
00:28:53The Bills have it.
00:28:54Ken Irvin took it away.
00:28:59So a huge turnover in this game as Meggett tried to pick up the loose ball.
00:29:03And Ken Irvin, who was down the field ahead of everybody, is on the ball.
00:29:08Like a dog in a pork chop, he ate it up.
00:29:16I cannot think of a returner in the National Football League that I would rather trust in
00:29:22this situation than Dave Meggett.
00:29:24A veteran of many, many returns.
00:29:26I think this is a result of the weather that I've been talking about since this kickoff.
00:29:31It's gray out here.
00:29:33It's so wet and rainy.
00:29:34But still, the veteran Dave Meggett should have known.
00:29:37There's a clock in your head that tells you when to give up trying to pick it up.
00:29:40Jump on top of it.
00:29:41You did a lot of kick returning.
00:29:42That's right.
00:29:45Now the wind is coming stronger and the rain is falling in sheets.
00:29:49It's like a car watch out there as Thurman Thomas tries to take it inside.
00:29:52He gets to the 15-yard line.
00:29:55He gets nothing at all.
00:29:57Patriots continue to shut down the run.
00:29:59Mark Wheeler, one of the defensive tackles, was the first hit along with Chris Slade.
00:30:06John, this is going to be, it already is shaping up to be, this is going to be an old-time football
00:30:12game.
00:30:12There's not a lot of room for trickery and passes into tiny little spots because of the weather.
00:30:20You're going to see them pound it all day.
00:30:21Now they switch ends as the first quarter ends.
00:30:25And in this quarter, the Bills will have the wind at their back.
00:30:28But everybody has torrents of rain to contend with as the score is tied at 3-0.
00:30:34I believe he's no longer going like 60.
00:30:42He's now in his 70s.
00:30:45And he stays young because he thinks that way.
00:30:4771 years old.
00:30:48Only one NFL coach in history has been older coaching and team.
00:30:51That was George Hallis, the Papa Bear.
00:30:53He was 72 in his final season in Chicago.
00:30:55Marv Levy plans to go on into his 70s as head coach.
00:31:01And Ralph Wilson, the Bills owner, says flatly Marv Levy will coach this team as long as he wants.
00:31:08Kelly on the shotgun has an open man.
00:31:10Makes the connection even on a high ball.
00:31:12Thurman Thomas comes down with it.
00:31:14And he advances it inside the 10-yard line.
00:31:19Again, on the play of about six.
00:31:20Don, like I told you earlier, what you're going to see today is high balls.
00:31:23That's what the ball does when your hand is wet, the ball is wet.
00:31:26That's a very good catch by Thurman Thomas.
00:31:31Kind of behind him, over his head.
00:31:35Critical turnover on the kickoff after the Bills' field goal.
00:31:38Eggert lost the ball.
00:31:40And now the in-and-rounding, Eric Moles takes it to the sideline.
00:31:43He gets to the five-yard line.
00:31:45The Patriots' free safety, Willie Clay, a free agent who came in from Detroit, makes the tackle out of bounds.
00:31:52Eric Moles, the number one draft choice.
00:31:55He's got a lot of speed, and that's why we've seen him run two reverses today.
00:32:00Drafted number one out of Mississippi State.
00:32:03Ken Flott.
00:32:06Bill's here loading up with power people as they have three tight ends in the game.
00:32:11Lonnie Johnson, Tony Klein, and Robert Coons, and they bring in a 230-pound blocking back Tim Tyndale, who's set to the left.
00:32:19Thomas is the setback.
00:32:21Thomas behind Tyndale.
00:32:23Thurman Thomas gets down close on fourth down.
00:32:27He needed about a yard or less.
00:32:30The spot is everything.
00:32:32And apparently, the Patriots are indicating it.
00:32:35The Bills might have gotten it on the spot.
00:32:36They're not happy about it.
00:32:37Devin Wyman, number 72, ends up wrapping up.
00:32:45Thurman on the play, but not before Thurman.
00:32:47You see Devin come off of his block.
00:32:49He thinks that he's neutralized, Thurman.
00:32:51Oh, wow.
00:32:52That's a tough spot.
00:32:53And it kind of looked like he did.
00:32:56But I think Thurman might have been at the line before Devin hit him.
00:32:59It's a tough spot.
00:32:59Devin Wyman, a sixth-round draft choice out of Kentucky State.
00:33:04He has worked in as a starter, as a rookie.
00:33:07Big enough, 6-7, 3-15.
00:33:10He moves the pile.
00:33:11Close those offensive linemen back.
00:33:13But now the Bills have an almost point-blank range.
00:33:15First down and goal in this tie game, 3-3, second quarter.
00:33:19Thurman Thomas bites his way and goes in.
00:33:22With a first touchdown of the game.
00:33:30Buffalo takes a six-point lead with the extra point attempt coming up.
00:33:34A four-yard run by Thurman Thomas, who's really had to gut it out for every yard.
00:33:39Number 87, the tight end Robert Coons comes across.
00:33:43It's a tight end trap block.
00:33:46He traps the nose tackle, the inside defensive lineman.
00:33:50Creating enough of a little bit of a sleeve for the fullback and running back,
00:33:54in this case Thurman Thomas, to step in for the touchdown.
00:33:58Steve Christie, 4-4 on field goal track this season.
00:34:02Hit all his extra point attempts also.
00:34:04They saw the result of a negative humble.
00:34:06The Bills got it in close, and they take the lead for the first time, 10-3.
00:34:10Ball is in the air, and here comes David Meggett, who fumbled the last kickoff return attempt.
00:34:19This time, he works his way out to the 24-yard line.
00:34:23As coming down to make the play for Buffalo was linebacker David White.
00:34:26Let's look back at the touchdown.
00:34:30It's the tight end wham block, number 87.
00:34:33Robert Coons coming in because, not a wham, but a phew, because the defensive lineman saw him coming.
00:34:39Really, that touchdown is just a credit for Thurman Thomas.
00:34:42Jumps in the hole, sideways, squirms, and fights his way in.
00:34:45And the Patriots, down for the first time, 10-3, with a lot of time left in the first half.
00:34:5212.53 to play in it.
00:34:55Let's go, going very limited, not completing anything.
00:34:57He doesn't have to if Curtis Martin runs like this, and gets out to the 36-yard line.
00:35:03Curtis Martin on first down, 12 yards, and four new downs for the Patriots.
00:35:07Maddox makes the tackle.
00:35:09They are worried about this guy, and you see why.
00:35:11Bob Cratch, Max Lane, open up a nice little hole, a very nice hole.
00:35:15And one thing about Curtis Martin, he hits it so quick.
00:35:19Curtis Martin took care of Bruce Smith.
00:35:23Ben Coates, see the Ben Coates on the cut block on Smith, keeping him out of the play.
00:35:29Very good, well-designed play.
00:35:31Rain has stopped, put him on there, but the wins continue.
00:35:34And first down, back to the run, and Martin stuck hard with the line of scrimmage.
00:35:39By inside linebacker Chris Spielman, as we look at some of the other scores today.
00:35:45Oakland playing the Chiefs to a scoreless draw so far early in the second quarter.
00:35:50Pittsburgh, they find a way to come back, basically, even when they have a bad game and have lost players to injury.
00:35:56Bears up on the Redskins at Washington.
00:35:58After Chicago's big win on Monday night over Dallas.
00:36:01And here it is, 10-3, Bills over the Patriots.
00:36:08Second down and 10 for Bledsoe and the New England Patriots.
00:36:12Roll out, a throw, and a catch to the 41-yard line.
00:36:15Ball on the field, it's out of bounds.
00:36:18Terry Glenn was the man who last possessed it.
00:36:21It will be the Patriots' ball, but they'll have third down and long.
00:36:23You know, Terry Glenn came in motion that time.
00:36:26He stopped and went back to his normal position.
00:36:29He completely lost his defender.
00:36:31See, his defender, number 20, gets stopped on the other side of the field.
00:36:34If this had been a better throw, Terry would have at least had time to catch it and turn up for another yard or two.
00:36:40Go, go, go, go, go, go.
00:36:43Go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go.
00:37:01You know, that's where he's going when it's on the line and yet they still can't stop him.
00:37:06Well, the big matchup today, Bruce Armstrong versus Bruce Smith.
00:37:10and you see there's the matchup
00:37:12and Armstrong gives Drew plenty of time
00:37:14to step up and hit coach
00:37:15everyone knew
00:37:17everybody on Buffalo's team said
00:37:18we've got to stop coach
00:37:19we've got to stop Martin
00:37:20they have stopped Mike
00:37:22not so far
00:37:24on first down
00:37:25Martin runs into one of his own guys
00:37:27so he goes back the other way
00:37:28putting moves on everybody
00:37:29behind the line of scrimmage
00:37:31by his own man
00:37:32and a pulling guard
00:37:33got his way
00:37:34and Dilley makes it into a six yard plus run
00:37:38second and four
00:37:40you do what you have to do
00:37:41you do what you have to do
00:37:45here he runs into Max Lane
00:37:46he stops and see that's what they like
00:37:48look at those moves
00:37:49that's what they like about Curtis Martin
00:37:51you never get a good hit on him
00:37:53look at Martin's numbers
00:37:5513 carries already
00:37:5757 yards
00:37:59at only 23 yards last week against Miami
00:38:01yep that's a pullback
00:38:03Big Sam Gans gets the call
00:38:05Bill shut that down
00:38:06Ed Washington and Bruce
00:38:08in on the tackle
00:38:08Spielman 54
00:38:11he's in on virtually everything
00:38:13the former
00:38:13Ohio State All-American
00:38:15the Lombardi Award winner
00:38:16played eight years with the Lions
00:38:18with Leatherman tackles every year
00:38:19four Pro Bowls
00:38:20he's a tough man
00:38:22he'd go hang gliding in a tornado
00:38:23targeting of Jetsjivane was a real treat
00:38:29I'll get into some of the things
00:38:31he told us later
00:38:32Martin again runs into his own guy
00:38:36and again he finds a way to get ahead for a first down
00:38:39so the wizardry of Curtis Martin
00:38:42gives the Patriots four new downs inside the Buffalo 40 at the 37
00:38:46you know Chris Spielman was telling us yesterday
00:38:50just his philosophy on football
00:38:52I think it's rare for a professional athlete
00:38:54especially a millionaire
00:38:55he was saying number one
00:38:56that it is his privilege to be in the NFL
00:38:59it's not
00:39:00it's not Buffalo's privilege to have him
00:39:02it's his privilege to play for Buffalo
00:39:04and he keeps that in mind
00:39:06when he trains and works
00:39:07every day
00:39:08I think we should always feel like that
00:39:10about our employer and our work
00:39:11you only get so many chances
00:39:13he wants to make everyone count
00:39:15Glypso lofting the ball downfield
00:39:17Glenn coming back at it
00:39:18lost his footing
00:39:19Jeff Burris who was covering him
00:39:22was having a problem keeping up with Terry Glenn
00:39:25well it's hard to tell what was happening here
00:39:27sometimes they fake a bomb and let you stop to catch it
00:39:31this one is just overthrown out of bounds
00:39:34and you know the young man Glenn did not have a chance to get that at all
00:39:40that's just
00:39:41it's hard for me to say bad throw on a day like today
00:39:44it's got to be tough to hold on to the football
00:39:46but that was overthrowing out of bounds
00:39:48and the Patriots working into the win of the second quarter
00:39:51Curtis Martin runs again
00:39:53on second down and ten
00:39:54he is close to the 35 yard line
00:39:56and again it's Ed Washington and Bruce Smith
00:39:59on two tacklers for the Bills
00:40:01Bills have done a masterful job with personnel
00:40:06look at the free agent they picked up
00:40:08the NFL defensive player of the year
00:40:10he turned out to be
00:40:11walking to Jeffco to pass rusher from the Cowboys
00:40:14Quinn early was the best receiver in the New Orleans Saints team
00:40:18one of the best in the NFC last year
00:40:2081 catches over a thousand yards
00:40:22third down for Bledsoe
00:40:26and now the noise factor kicks in
00:40:28there comes the rush
00:40:31Bledsoe stands in
00:40:32makes the throw
00:40:33and it is caught
00:40:35by Terry Glenn on a diving reception
00:40:38I'll tell you what that was great
00:40:40first down a big play by the rookie
00:40:42now this is a big time catch
00:40:45now remember it's raining
00:40:46the turf is wet
00:40:47he still runs a super route
00:40:49there's great coverage
00:40:51from Jeff Burris
00:40:52I mean Burris
00:40:53that's not Jeff Burris
00:40:54actually Emanuel Martin
00:40:56Emanuel Martin
00:40:57with great coverage right there
00:40:59Glenn still finds the ball
00:41:01and pulls it in
00:41:02so the Patriots down by seven drive on
00:41:05it's ten to three in the second quarter
00:41:08eight minutes to play in it
00:41:10Curtis Martin
00:41:11behind Walker
00:41:12and he is down inside
00:41:16about the 22 yard line
00:41:17where Phil Hansen finally gets him down
00:41:19as Martin
00:41:21this workman luck back
00:41:23continues to pile up plus yards
00:41:24carry after carry
00:41:26there's nothing complicated about the play
00:41:29it's just New England
00:41:30putting people at the point of attack
00:41:32good running by Curtis Martin
00:41:35Bob Cratch having a big game
00:41:46at right guard for the Patriots
00:41:48rating out about 100% with his blocks
00:41:51again they go to Martin
00:41:53both times out in the ball
00:41:54he shoots at the Buffalo defense
00:41:56on second down and seven
00:41:57and he's close to the 21 yard line
00:41:59and bring up third
00:42:00and five
00:42:01you know there's several ways
00:42:04that you handle a talented guy
00:42:05like Bruce Smith
00:42:06and one way certainly
00:42:07it's a double team
00:42:08you see Bruce Armstrong
00:42:10gets a shot at him
00:42:11he also gets help
00:42:13from William Roberts
00:42:15number 76
00:42:16Bruce says he always expects
00:42:19either to be two linemen on him
00:42:21or one lineman
00:42:22and a back waiting
00:42:23in the backfield
00:42:23as he's double teamed
00:42:25on virtually every play
00:42:26of his career
00:42:27Bledsoe on third and five
00:42:31good pass blocking
00:42:33by the Patriots
00:42:34and a good catch by Megan
00:42:35as he scrambles ahead
00:42:36in the spot
00:42:37good give the Patriots
00:42:38a first down
00:42:39David Megan
00:42:41on the ground
00:42:42but not touched
00:42:43by a defender
00:42:44inches his way ahead
00:42:45and the ball is spotted
00:42:46where it will give
00:42:47the Patriots
00:42:47a first down
00:42:48right side of your screen
00:42:49coming out of the backfield
00:42:50Megan went inside
00:42:51stopped
00:42:52and went back outside
00:42:53and basically
00:42:54literally crawled
00:42:56for the first down
00:42:57now there's Bruce Smith
00:42:59against Armstrong
00:43:00and Coates
00:43:00he throws two Patriots
00:43:02on the floor
00:43:02and almost gets there
00:43:04what he has to contend with
00:43:07to get there
00:43:08is unbelievable
00:43:08he's a strong man
00:43:09here is Curtis Martin
00:43:12again this time
00:43:13they ding him hard
00:43:14as Martin tries to go wide right
00:43:15Washington moving well
00:43:18and Sean Moran
00:43:19a rookie
00:43:20number 98
00:43:21along with 92
00:43:23Washington
00:43:23on the stop
00:43:24Moran in for just that one play
00:43:26he was a six round draft choice
00:43:27out of Colorado State
00:43:29and he's moved into
00:43:30playing position already
00:43:31for you defensive gurus
00:43:33charting the game at home
00:43:35what I would be expecting
00:43:37right now
00:43:37is some type of play action
00:43:39pass
00:43:40maybe not on this down
00:43:42but as they get closer in
00:43:43because there's been so much
00:43:44running to Martin
00:43:45and it opens up the play action
00:43:46back to the money
00:43:51back to Curtis Martin
00:43:52when he breaks it down
00:43:53to about the 12 yard line
00:43:55as Kurt Schultz
00:43:57great safety for the Bills
00:43:58got him
00:43:59and that brings up
00:44:00fourth down
00:44:03Sam Gash's
00:44:06third down
00:44:07is going to be in seventh
00:44:08has done a great job
00:44:09lead blocking
00:44:10look at him
00:44:10take on Spielman there
00:44:12neutralized him in the hole
00:44:13knock him down on the ground
00:44:15Curtis Martin breaks free
00:44:17as a result
00:44:17and Martin goes off the field
00:44:19David Meggett comes in
00:44:21the receiving specialist
00:44:26on third down
00:44:27Patriots need six
00:44:29it's Meggett
00:44:30turns up
00:44:32turns down
00:44:33and he stops
00:44:34short of a close down
00:44:35the Patriots will have to
00:44:36try a field goal
00:44:37as Emmanuel Martin
00:44:39number 21
00:44:40a first year player
00:44:41from Albany State
00:44:42makes a big defensive play
00:44:44to keep the Patriots
00:44:45and driving on
00:44:46toward a possible touchdown
00:44:47and Adam Venatieri
00:44:52comes back out
00:44:5345 yarder
00:44:58his second field goal
00:44:59attempt of the day
00:44:59hit the upright
00:45:00and turned off
00:45:02no good
00:45:02after he hit the 42
00:45:03yarder
00:45:03to give the Patriots
00:45:04the early lead
00:45:05Buffalo is leading
00:45:0710 to 3
00:45:07ah
00:45:08let's go
00:45:09it's North
00:45:09the holders
00:45:10one of the backup
00:45:11quarterbacks
00:45:12Tom Tupa
00:45:13looking for somebody
00:45:14open
00:45:14and he lost it
00:45:15to the end zone
00:45:16and it's incomplete
00:45:17so Tom Tupa
00:45:19who was a quarterback
00:45:20at Ohio State
00:45:21Marcel digged
00:45:24into his bag
00:45:24of tricks
00:45:25but it blows up
00:45:26out of the net
00:45:26place
00:45:26there'll be more
00:45:28of those though
00:45:28so the Bills
00:45:33take over
00:45:34with a 7 point lead
00:45:35Patriots
00:45:39go to their bag
00:45:40of tricks
00:45:40Tom Tupa
00:45:40the holder
00:45:41a quarterback
00:45:41their third quarterback
00:45:42instead of holding
00:45:45for a field goal
00:45:45try
00:45:46Bryson Aaron
00:45:47passes the end zone
00:45:48the Bills
00:45:48take over on down
00:45:49leading 10 to 3
00:45:50in the second quarter
00:45:51Herman Thomas
00:45:53strikes through
00:45:54the Patriot defense
00:45:55for a gain
00:45:55of almost 10
00:45:56yards
00:45:57let's watch
00:45:57the Aaron
00:45:58pass play
00:45:59on fourth down
00:45:59teams practices
00:46:01at the end
00:46:02of every day
00:46:03very good snap
00:46:04but really
00:46:06the recognition
00:46:07by some of
00:46:08the Buffalo Bills
00:46:09defenders
00:46:09in particular
00:46:10Kurt Schultz
00:46:11number 24
00:46:12had been coached
00:46:13covered like a blanket
00:46:14that sent Tupa
00:46:16scrambling
00:46:16now a big stick
00:46:19in the backfield
00:46:20Thurman Thomas
00:46:20is hit hard
00:46:21by defensive tackle
00:46:22Mark Wheeler
00:46:23number 97
00:46:24and there's a loss
00:46:27of yards on the play
00:46:28so that brings up
00:46:29second down
00:46:29and 12
00:46:30for the Bills
00:46:30just knifed his way
00:46:34through untouched
00:46:35Jim Kelly bringing his team
00:46:42in and out of the huddle
00:46:43they work with the K gun
00:46:44and no huddle offense
00:46:45early in the game
00:46:46now they're taking a more
00:46:47measured pace
00:46:48and running their plays
00:46:49Kelly in second and 12
00:46:51throws downfield
00:46:52comes in high
00:46:53in a terrific play
00:46:54by Clint Early
00:46:55as he comes down
00:46:56with the ball
00:46:57for a first down
00:46:59well these are big time
00:47:02catches on a day
00:47:03like today
00:47:04now they might spot him
00:47:05out of bounds
00:47:06just short of the first
00:47:06down Beasley
00:47:07but he did get almost
00:47:0811 yards on the play
00:47:09he got both feet in
00:47:12clearly
00:47:13Bison catch it
00:47:16one two
00:47:17kicks down the back foot
00:47:18very good
00:47:19third and short
00:47:20a fake to Eric Mould
00:47:21and then the ball
00:47:22is dumped over the middle
00:47:23and Kelly's tight end
00:47:24Ronnie Johnson
00:47:25apparently wasn't
00:47:26expecting it
00:47:26so the Bills
00:47:27is misfired
00:47:28and they have to punt
00:47:29the ball
00:47:30now Jim Kelly's
00:47:32very upset with himself
00:47:33after this play
00:47:34or upset with
00:47:35something
00:47:36tries to dump it
00:47:39couldn't get it there
00:47:40hmm
00:47:40that's right in
00:47:42Johnson's hands
00:47:42yeah
00:47:43that makes
00:47:44Bill Parcells'
00:47:45gamble
00:47:46a very good gamble
00:47:48you know
00:47:49gambling that your
00:47:50defense will hold
00:47:51the team
00:47:51now Dave
00:47:54Negat is back
00:47:55as Moore
00:47:56hits the ball
00:47:56downfield
00:47:57and he brings it all
00:48:09the way back to the
00:48:09Bills 45 yard line
00:48:11where he's finally taken
00:48:12down by the putter
00:48:12himself
00:48:13six foot five inch
00:48:14220 pound Chris Moore
00:48:16the loads are getting
00:48:22heavier
00:48:22and the stumps
00:48:23are just getting
00:48:24more stubborn
00:48:25you're working
00:48:26harder than ever
00:48:26you need a truck
00:48:27that does too
00:48:28meet the all new
00:48:291997 Ford F-150
00:48:31really trying to make
00:48:34amends for his fumble
00:48:35that is the reason
00:48:36that his team is
00:48:36trailing right now
00:48:37very good decisions
00:48:39watch him try to run
00:48:40out of this
00:48:40and back to live action
00:48:43and back to
00:48:43Curtis Martin
00:48:44who really takes a stick
00:48:45as Martin is buried
00:48:47by Phil Hansen
00:48:48the defensive end
00:48:49who was drafted
00:48:51in the second round
00:48:52and has turned into
00:48:53a premier player
00:48:54had ten sacks
00:48:55last year
00:48:55modest guy says
00:48:57they were doubling
00:48:57Bruce every play
00:48:58then they had to
00:48:58start doubling
00:48:59pop also
00:49:00so I got a lot of
00:49:01hits
00:49:01he's a quiet
00:49:02great player
00:49:02in fact they got
00:49:0345 and a half sacks
00:49:05from three guys
00:49:06last year
00:49:06that guy and
00:49:08Bruce Smith

00:51:13for 73 yards
00:51:14well I think if you
00:51:15ask Bill Parcells
00:51:16to design the way
00:51:17he would like
00:51:17for this team
00:51:18to play today
00:51:19and what they'd like
00:51:20to do
00:51:20he would say

00:51:22that's exactly
00:51:22what they've done
00:51:23he's got to be happy

00:52:33people wonder
00:52:34the Patriots fans
00:52:35are all aware
00:52:35that an injury
00:52:37a senior year
00:52:37at the University
00:52:38of Pittsburgh
00:52:38kept him out
00:52:39roughly the whole
00:52:40year
00:52:40so the Pro Scouts
00:52:41dropped him
00:52:42in their ratings
00:52:42but he turned out
00:52:43to be a great one
00:52:44and now the throw
00:52:44is to Terry Glenn
00:52:45and he is down
00:52:47inside the 30 yard
00:52:48line to the 28
00:52:49and brings up
00:52:50third down
00:52:51and three

00:53:16the Patriots
00:53:18who led early
00:53:18are down by seven
00:53:19but driving here
00:53:20late in the first half
00:53:21Alexo makes the throw
00:53:23he is hit very hard
00:53:24just as he releases
00:53:25the ball
00:53:26and he does make
00:53:28the connection
00:53:29downfield
00:53:29and it's a first down
00:53:31for New England
00:53:31as Terry Glenn
00:53:32makes another play
00:53:33for the rookie
00:53:35a lot of questions
00:53:36of how ready he'd be
00:53:37after that month
00:53:38and a half layoff
00:53:38with a hamstring injury
00:53:40very ready indeed
00:53:41and going into formation
00:53:46at their leisure
00:53:47not a lot of time left
00:53:48left so looks
00:53:49throws in the flat
00:53:50Curtis Martin
00:53:52makes the catch
00:53:53and Mark Maddox
00:53:54quickly makes the hit
00:53:55out of bounds
00:53:56so the Patriots
00:53:57are able to stop the clock
00:53:58at 34 seconds to go
00:54:00he'll scored a tie-breaking
00:54:05touchdown when it was 3 3
00:54:06and a 4 yard run
00:54:07by Thurman Thomas
00:54:08Marv Levy a man
00:54:11with all the famous

00:54:13somebody asked him
00:54:14what advice he'd give
00:54:14young people
00:54:15he said none
00:54:16I think their instincts
00:54:16are better than my
00:54:17opinion
00:54:18on second and nine
00:54:27Bledsoe stands in
00:54:28dumps it up the middle
00:54:29to a wide open
00:54:30Sam Gash
00:54:31head down
00:54:32he's inside the 10
00:54:33he's down to the 7 yard line
00:54:34and the Patriots
00:54:36stop the clock
00:54:36with 25 seconds
00:54:38to go in the half
00:54:39talk about a major league
00:54:42collision between
00:54:43Gash and
00:54:44Kirk Schultz
00:54:46is that Johnson
00:54:51behind us
00:54:52exactly
00:54:53Sam Gash
00:54:55sneaks out
00:54:56look at him sneak
00:54:57sneak sneak
00:54:57hits him
00:54:58and there's nobody
00:54:59anywhere around him
00:55:01watch the end of this
00:55:01though
00:55:02boy
00:55:02they converged at the ball
00:55:04but that's a very well
00:55:05designed play
00:55:06they had three receivers
00:55:07Curtis Martin was split
00:55:09out of the back there
00:55:09now the Patriots
00:55:13first and goal
00:55:14off the 8 yard line
00:55:15Bledsoe rolling out
00:55:18looks to the end zone
00:55:19locks it high
00:55:19and throws it away
00:55:20wisely
00:55:21and that will leave
00:55:2420 seconds on the clock
00:55:25and the Patriots
00:55:26with three downs
00:55:27to try and get points
00:55:28down by 7
00:55:31it's a very smart play
00:55:32by Drew Bledsoe
00:55:33nobody there
00:55:35in this situation
00:55:36with 20 seconds left
00:55:38before the half
00:55:39you throw it away
00:55:39Bledsoe can see downfield
00:55:41Beasley as good as anybody
00:55:42in the league
00:55:43at 6 5 and a half
00:55:44235 pounds
00:55:45you can check it all out
00:55:48look over the linemen
00:55:49two bats in
00:55:52two wide receivers
00:55:53that's it with a four-step drop
00:55:58close to the end zone
00:55:59and the ball
00:55:59tearings off the shoulder
00:56:00pads of the usually liable
00:56:02Ben Coates
00:56:03who scored three touchdowns
00:56:05in New England
00:56:06when it's Buffalo
00:56:06last year
00:56:07boy I think everybody
00:56:08knew that was coming
00:56:09watch Ben Coates
00:56:10come off the line
00:56:11they're waiting on him
00:56:13Spillman bounces him
00:56:14Schultz
00:56:15Kurt Schultz
00:56:16is there to hit him
00:56:16everybody knew the ball
00:56:18was going there
00:56:19and a very good throw
00:56:20by Drew Bledsoe
00:56:21right between the 8
00:56:22and the 7
00:56:23on Ben Coates
00:56:24they could go right
00:56:26back to that
00:56:26Patriots doing good
00:56:29on third down
00:56:30they've converted
00:56:307 of 10
00:56:31this is third and goal
00:56:33from the Bill 7
00:56:34again
00:56:37let's go get some time
00:56:38dump it up the middle
00:56:39it's behind his
00:56:40intended receiver
00:56:41David Megan
00:56:42Milo Perry
00:56:44doing a good job
00:56:45of picking Megan
00:56:46up out of the backfield
00:56:47so the Patriots
00:56:48will have to settle
00:56:49for a field goal
00:56:50or will they
00:56:50the last time
00:56:51they aligned for one
00:56:52year number two
00:56:52put through the ball
00:56:53into the end zone
00:56:53they came away
00:56:54with nothing at all
00:56:58well Drew Bledsoe
00:56:59basically had nothing
00:57:00he was trying
00:57:01and really the referee
00:57:02got in the way
00:57:03he was trying to hit
00:57:04Dave Megan
00:57:04coming out of the backfield
00:57:06Megan might have been
00:57:08open
00:57:08but the ref was
00:57:10right in the way
00:57:11Adam Venetieri
00:57:17field goal attempt
00:57:18no good
00:57:19for the rookie
00:57:21shakes one
00:57:22one for three
00:57:23on the day
00:57:24and the Bills
00:57:25will take over
00:57:26the ball
00:57:26with just nine
00:57:27seconds to play
00:57:28in the first half
00:57:29touchdown
00:57:32on a fake field goal
00:57:33that Tupa
00:57:34was unable
00:57:35to connect down
00:57:36and the Bills
00:57:36took over the ball
00:57:37as we look at
00:57:38the Coors Light
00:57:39halftime stats
00:57:40you know I think
00:57:41the big one
00:57:41that jumps out
00:57:42at you
00:57:42is the time
00:57:43of possession
00:57:44New England
00:57:45has controlled
00:57:45the ball
00:57:46about nine minutes
00:57:47more
00:57:47than Buffalo
00:57:48and New England
00:57:49leads in almost
00:57:50in every statistical
00:57:52category except for
00:57:54the big one
00:57:54and that be the
00:57:55score on the scoreboard
00:57:56yeah the Patriots
00:57:57with two and a half
00:57:57times more total
00:57:58yards than the Bills
00:57:59the Patriots
00:58:01ready to kick off
00:58:02now to start
00:58:03the third quarter
00:58:04Eric Moles
00:58:08and Tim Tyndale
00:58:09are back for the Bills
00:58:10Adam Venetieri
00:58:11who hit his first
00:58:12field goal of the day
00:58:13to give the Patriots
00:58:14a three nothing lead
00:58:15then misses
00:58:15two subsequent drives
00:58:17it's a high spinning kick
00:58:19and here comes Moles
00:58:21the rookie who can go
00:58:22across the 20
00:58:24Moles dives out
00:58:25across the 27
00:58:27boy the heartbeat
00:58:29quickens on the Patriots
00:58:31side of the field
00:58:31every time this Moles
00:58:32has his hands on the ball
00:58:33on a kick return
00:58:34coming down to make
00:58:35the tackle
00:58:36was Mario Greer
00:58:37a rookie running back
00:58:38for New England
00:58:39the thing about Moles
00:58:41is he's big
00:58:42he's very very athletic
00:58:44he's very fast
00:58:45and his history
00:58:47suggests that he knows
00:58:48he knows what he's doing
00:58:49he led the nation
00:58:50one year when he was
00:58:51in college
00:58:52and kicked returns
00:58:52one scored
00:58:53eight touchdowns
00:58:54in a high school game
00:58:55three on kick returns
00:58:57two on pump returns
00:58:58three on touchdown reception
00:59:01after the day
00:59:01it's a big day
00:59:03it'll get you recruited
00:59:04Thurman Thomas
00:59:06runs on first down
00:59:07and again the Patriots
00:59:08shut it down
00:59:09Willie McGinnis
00:59:10number 55
00:59:11a former number one
00:59:12draft choice
00:59:12from Southern California
00:59:14McGinnis playing
00:59:15from a downline position
00:59:17as you can see there
00:59:18that's the way
00:59:18he played in college
00:59:19now last year
00:59:20he played as a standup
00:59:21linebacker
00:59:21but you know
00:59:22now he's back
00:59:23to what he knows
00:59:24from back in his college days
00:59:25he's the son
00:59:26even call it
00:59:26Lonnie Johnson
00:59:27was doing to him
00:59:28holding
00:59:28here's the throw down
00:59:30field
00:59:30a hit comes in
00:59:31right as the ball arrives
00:59:33Eric Moles
00:59:34the antenna receiver
00:59:35and cornerback
00:59:36Ty Law
00:59:37is the man
00:59:38who was the antenna receiver
00:59:39Kelly
00:59:43Kelly
00:59:43Kelly is caught up
00:59:45in his lineman's
00:59:47equipment there
00:59:48that's closeness
00:59:49that's a closeness
00:59:51among teammates
00:59:52that you don't want
00:59:53now on third down
00:59:58and the Bills
00:59:58needing over 10 yards
00:59:59Kelly looks at a blitz
01:00:01and here it comes
01:00:01all out
01:00:02and Kelly gets eaten up
01:00:03back to the 15 yard line
01:00:05now the Patriots
01:00:07shoot everybody
01:00:08and the Bills
01:00:09don't have enough
01:00:10blockers there
01:00:10to offset it
01:00:11Slade and Ty Law
01:00:12came outside linebacker
01:00:14and a cornerback
01:00:15they got there first
01:00:15that's about the
01:00:17sixth time
01:00:17I've seen Terry Ray blitz
01:00:19the first time
01:00:20I saw Ty Law
01:00:21come from the corner
01:00:22now once again
01:00:23the Giants
01:00:24had great success
01:00:26blitzing Kelly
01:00:27and Buffalo
01:00:28from the corners
01:00:29and New England
01:00:30copying that
01:00:31Chris Moore
01:00:32against an all out
01:00:33punt rush
01:00:33kicks a low punt
01:00:34and then
01:00:36Megan comes over
01:00:36and David Megan
01:00:38takes it at his 37
01:00:39then has to dance
01:00:40out of bounds
01:00:40at the 40
01:00:41a brilliantly executed
01:00:42kick into the wind
01:00:43by Moore of Buffalo
01:00:46and it'll be the Patriots
01:00:49ball at their 40
01:00:50railing 10 to 3
01:00:51see Bledsoe's numbers
01:00:54today
01:00:55intercepted
01:00:56last week
01:00:58he had big problems
01:00:59with picked off twice
01:01:00one return for a touchdown
01:01:02and he had three
01:01:02interceptions
01:01:03that would have been
01:01:04picked
01:01:04but they were dropped
01:01:05first interception
01:01:07was the critical one
01:01:08that was run back
01:01:09by Lewis Oliver
01:01:10the Dolphins
01:01:10on the Patriots
01:01:11opening drive
01:01:12for a touchdown
01:01:12they never got back
01:01:13in the game
01:01:14who else
01:01:17Curtis Martin
01:01:18but this time
01:01:19Bill shed the blocks
01:01:21Bryce Plop
01:01:22and Chris Spielman
01:01:23combine on the hit
01:01:24no gain
01:01:28second and ten
01:01:29New England
01:01:29Patriots been on the road
01:01:31for the first two weeks
01:01:32of the season
01:01:33Coach Parcells
01:01:33goes back home
01:01:34to open at Foxboro
01:01:36next Sunday
01:01:37with a home opener
01:01:37against Arizona
01:01:38two tough places
01:01:42to start off
01:01:42at Miami
01:01:43at Buffalo
01:01:44looking towards
01:01:56Ben Coates
01:01:57Curtis Martin
01:01:58was also
01:01:59flexed out
01:02:00he was running
01:02:00a pattern
01:02:00now that ball
01:02:02was poorly thrown
01:02:04again
01:02:04that one
01:02:05bounced off
01:02:06the turf
01:02:06it was in between
01:02:07Ben Coates
01:02:08I think he was
01:02:08trying to get it
01:02:09to Coates
01:02:10but as you saw
01:02:11he had to
01:02:12throw it
01:02:13backing up
01:02:14off his back foot
01:02:15because there was
01:02:15a defensive player
01:02:16falling at his knees
01:02:17when he's in trouble
01:02:19Bledsoe invariably
01:02:20goes to Coates
01:02:21and that's a good
01:02:22place to go
01:02:22the out pro
01:02:24tight end
01:02:24now Bledsoe
01:02:25off his back foot
01:02:26throws an Aaron pass
01:02:27as David Meggett
01:02:29the Bills talked
01:02:30yesterday about
01:02:30wanting to get
01:02:31to Bledsoe
01:02:32and getting him
01:02:32throwing off
01:02:33his back foot
01:02:34and that's what
01:02:35he did there
01:02:36two Aaron passes
01:02:37in a row
01:02:37well he can't
01:02:38blame his
01:02:38offensive lineman
01:02:39on this one
01:02:40Bruce Smith
01:02:41neutralized
01:02:42by Bruce Armstrong
01:02:44at the left side
01:02:45he's got all
01:02:46the time in the world
01:02:46to step and find
01:02:47who he wants
01:02:48perhaps that ball
01:02:50was tipped
01:02:51by Phil Hanson
01:02:52I really couldn't
01:02:53tell from here
01:02:53but a bad result
01:02:55on the play
01:02:55Russell Copeland
01:02:57is back now
01:02:58waiting Tom
01:02:59Tupa's punt
01:02:59Tupa booms
01:03:01the ball
01:03:01with a wind
01:03:02in his back
01:03:02Copeland
01:03:03all the way
01:03:03back to the
01:03:0410 yard line
01:03:04they set up
01:03:05a return right
01:03:05and Copeland
01:03:08does well
01:03:09to get to
01:03:09the 24 yard
01:03:10line
01:03:11so the Bills
01:03:12with a 7 point
01:03:13lead
01:03:13working into
01:03:14the wind
01:03:14in the third
01:03:15quarter
01:03:15have the ball
01:03:16when we come
01:03:16back
