00:00:10Today, from Soldier Field in Chicago,
00:00:13it's the New England Patriots versus the Chicago Bears.
00:00:17Brought to you by Mazda,
00:00:19and the full line of sophisticated Mazda products.
00:00:23By Old Milwaukee and Old Milwaukee Light,
00:00:26it doesn't get any better than this.
00:00:30And by Radio Shack, a division of Tandy Corporation.
00:00:34♪♪
00:00:40The New England Patriots have come to Chicago,
00:00:42led by their young quarterback,
00:00:44Tony Eason from Illinois, a rising star.
00:00:46But today, he has to contend with the overpowering
00:00:49Chicago Bear defense.
00:00:51At Soldier Field, home of the Bears,
00:00:53number 34, Walter Payton,
00:00:55is still the cornerstone of the franchise
00:00:57as game after game.
00:00:59He has it to his all-time rushing record
00:01:01with power and quickness,
00:01:02running for what, again, is one of the NFL's best teams.
00:01:07Good afternoon, everyone.
00:01:08On a beautiful day in Chicago,
00:01:10Don Crickey with Bob Trumpy.
00:01:12The New England Patriots have a tough assignment today.
00:01:14They go against a Chicago Bear defense
00:01:16that is best described as fierce.
00:01:19Trump, before the season started,
00:01:20Mike Ditka said to those defensive players,
00:01:22I want you guys to put a chip on your shoulder in July
00:01:25and don't take it out until January.
00:01:27Well, the Bears have had a chip on their defensive shoulder
00:01:29for about the last 50 years.
00:01:31But in 1984, they terrorized the NFL
00:01:33with a league record 72 sacks.
00:01:35Now, the brainchild of Buddy Ryan,
00:01:37this defense is called a 46.
00:01:39On this play against the Tampa Bay Bucs,
00:01:41nine guys within three yards of the line of scrimmage.
00:01:44And this is not an isolated situation.
00:01:46The New England Patriots will have to face this
00:01:48about 80% of the time today.
00:01:50And, of course, the Patriots last year gave up 66 sacks.
00:01:53And the offensive line is hurt.
00:01:54This is an awesome responsibility and challenge
00:01:56for the New England Patriots offense.
00:01:58The Patriots do some sacking also.
00:02:00Ask Lynn Dickey, the Packers,
00:02:01they got him seven times last Sunday.
00:02:05Excellent conditions to play football.
00:02:07Temperatures, you see, 63 degrees
00:02:09on the shores of Lake Michigan.
00:02:10And this stadium that was originally built in 1919,
00:02:13the site of some great events,
00:02:15the Dempsey-Toney fight
00:02:16that hit a $2.5 million gross in 1927.
00:02:20Tony Franklin is ready to kick the ball off now
00:02:22for the Patriots in their red and white.
00:02:24The Bears have people back.
00:02:26Splitter Ken Taylor is back.
00:02:28Here's a spinning kickoff.
00:02:29It's Dennis Gentry at the seven.
00:02:34And Gentry, with good blocking from his special teams,
00:02:37gets the ball out close to the 30-23 yard game.
00:02:41McMahon, a quarterback, he's a great one when he's healthy.
00:02:43And he is now.
00:02:44Peyton might be the greatest ever.
00:02:46Matt Sui blocks for him, but he can do it all also.
00:02:48Catch it and run it.
00:02:49Willie Galt's a burner, a wide receiver.
00:02:51Has yet promise unfulfilled.
00:02:53McKinnon shorthanded.
00:02:54Emory Moore had an underrated tight end.
00:02:56The offensive line, Jim Colbert,
00:02:58is now emerging as one of the best offensive tackles
00:03:01in the entire league.
00:03:02They think he's all pro.
00:03:03He's the key to the offensive line.
00:03:05And Bortz, a free agent next to him,
00:03:07an excellent blocker also.
00:03:08They'll go to that side a lot.
00:03:11So McMahon brings the Bears out first in 10 at their 30.
00:03:14Opening play from scrimmage at Soldier Field in Chicago.
00:03:20Tippett left early and a marker goes down
00:03:22as McMahon might have a free play.
00:03:25See what the call is.
00:03:26Andre Tippett, the truly excellent outside linebacker
00:03:29for New England, jumped offside.
00:03:31We'll see if he was pulled off.
00:03:35Bears tried to start with a screen to Walter Peyton.
00:03:39Offside's defense, Andre Tippett.
00:03:41New England Patriots going to start with a blitz,
00:03:43which is what they do very well.
00:03:45The Patriots starting a rookie.
00:03:46Garen Barrister very high on.
00:03:48He's from Stanford, a good pass rusher.
00:03:50Ken Sims might have had his best game as a Patriot
00:03:52last week in the win over Green Bay.
00:03:54Outside backers, Tippett and Blackman,
00:03:56each had three sacks each against the Packers.
00:03:59Good linebacking for New England.
00:04:01Secondary, little suspect in certain areas,
00:04:04but overall pretty sound.
00:04:05Claiborne's the best player back there.
00:04:07Roland James also a good one at safety.
00:04:10So now on the five-yard assessment
00:04:12against the Patriots,
00:04:13it's first down and five for the Chicago Bears.
00:04:1535-yard line in Chicago.
00:04:23Second back, Walter Peyton.
00:04:25First down, Bears, as he's to the 42-yard line.
00:04:30At 120 yards last Sunday against Tampa Bay,
00:04:33now in his 11th year.
00:04:35Walter said he had trumped that 10,000-yard checkup
00:04:38on his knees and he's ready to go.
00:04:40Mike Ditka's kind of promised Walter Peyton
00:04:42that they would de-emphasize him a little bit
00:04:44in the offense this year, try to throw it around.
00:04:46But Jim McMahon, all Walter Peyton does
00:04:49is account for about 150 yards last week
00:04:51against the Tampa Bay Bucs.
00:04:53Every game, he extends his own rushing record,
00:04:56his all-time record.
00:04:57He's rushed for over 1,340 yards now in his career.
00:05:02First and 10, Bears.
00:05:06Running hard and running well is fullback Matt Sui,
00:05:09a Penn Stater he fenders up for a gain of eight.
00:05:13And a second and two.
00:05:15Notice that Walter Peyton went to the bench.
00:05:17Doesn't appear to be an injury of any sort.
00:05:20This young man, Matt Sui, doesn't get an awful lot of press,
00:05:23but he's one of the reasons that Walter Peyton
00:05:25has been such an excellent running back.
00:05:28He's in that lead-blocking spot
00:05:30and he can clear a hole for you.
00:05:32Fred Merrion, the free safety, made the hit.
00:05:34Number 31, he's playing in place of Rick Sanford.
00:05:37Long-time safety for the Peytons,
00:05:39who has cut this season.
00:05:41Second and two.
00:05:42A quick throw and a completion for a first down,
00:05:44and McKinnon is inside the 35-yard line.
00:05:47Dennis McKinnon spreading out the left flank
00:05:50and a perfect lead.
00:05:52From McMahon, a 16-yard gain for the Bears.
00:05:55Don Patriots show blitz on almost every single play.
00:05:58The outside backers, Blackman and Tippett,
00:06:00that's where the New England Patriots
00:06:02get most of their pass rush.
00:06:03A quick three-step drop by Jim McMahon.
00:06:06No real pattern run by McKinnon,
00:06:09up underneath the linebacker coverage.
00:06:10First down.
00:06:14Bears put a lot of pressure on a defense,
00:06:16just like they put a lot of pressure on an offense
00:06:18with their defense.
00:06:19McMahon is an excellent player.
00:06:20He's 13-4 as a winning pitcher in the last 17 games.
00:06:24Peyton back in and he gets the football.
00:06:29Down to the 32-yard line.
00:06:31We're told that Walter Peyton got a finger in the eye earlier,
00:06:34but he's all right.
00:06:36Can't hurt that man with an axe.
00:06:38One of the most durable running backs
00:06:40I think the NFL has ever had.
00:06:42Steve Nelson, the veteran on the tackle.
00:06:45Walter Peyton, with all the yards he's gained,
00:06:47you realize that he has never had a Pro Bowl
00:06:49offensive lineman in front of him.
00:06:51Jim Brown was afforded that great luxury yet.
00:06:54He's got offensive linemen in the Hall of Fame.
00:06:56That's right, a lot of them.
00:06:58The junior Bear, Mike Ditka.
00:07:03Bears make it happen fast, a 32-yard play.
00:07:08Don Fred Merian of the New England Patriots
00:07:11has the coverage.
00:07:12A half roll by Jim McMahon.
00:07:14This is bad news for the Patriots already.
00:07:16Last week in their victory over the Green Bay Packers,
00:07:19they had an outstanding performance,
00:07:21allowing just 146 passing yards.
00:07:24This is the first time they've had that.
00:07:26Don Fred Merian of the New England Patriots
00:07:28has the coverage.
00:07:29A half roll by Jim McMahon.
00:07:31This is bad news for the Patriots already.
00:07:33Last week in their victory over the Green Bay Packers,
00:07:36146 passing yards.
00:07:38This drive by the Chicago Bears, very easy.
00:07:43Now, Butler's on the field to try the point after,
00:07:46and the rookie from Georgia gets it through,
00:07:48and so with 11.57 to play in the first quarter,
00:07:51the Bears go in front 7-0.
00:07:57McKinnon scored the touchdown.
00:07:59He's now got on the day two catches for 48 yards
00:08:01from the end zone behind the defense.
00:08:03You see Sui out there leading,
00:08:05trying to protect McMahon against the pass rush.
00:08:07This is well thrown.
00:08:09Merian on the coverage.
00:08:10Good catch by McKinnon.
00:08:11Five plays, 69 yards,
00:08:13just three minutes and three seconds.
00:08:16Lazar precision, a great play.
00:08:18It looked like the coverage was good,
00:08:20and McMahon with that touch
00:08:21puts it right on McKinnon's fingertips,
00:08:23and so the Bears come out quickly
00:08:24and take a 7-0 lead.
00:08:26Butler hits a high kickoff.
00:08:29This is Stephon Starring.
00:08:31Looks for blockers, and he does well,
00:08:33getting across and out close to the 29-yard line.
00:08:36Tony Eason, number 11 from Illinois,
00:08:38where he's set seven NCAA passing records,
00:08:41comes in to quarterback the Pates.
00:08:43Tim Reitman is a tight end,
00:08:45along with Derek Ramsey.
00:08:47They're going to start with two of them.
00:08:48Derwin Williams is starting as a wide receiver.
00:08:50They like him after the five catches against Green Bay.
00:08:53Greg James had a great game running the ball.
00:08:56Patriots have a lot of offense,
00:08:58but their offensive line right now is banged up.
00:09:00The great one, John Hanna, isn't in the game
00:09:03as he wasn't last week.
00:09:04Eason on first down, stands in
00:09:06and throws a strike out to the 47.
00:09:09Got the big league arm, does Tony Eason.
00:09:12That was good for 17 yards
00:09:13as he gunned the ball out on the flank,
00:09:15and coming down with it was Derwin Williams,
00:09:17the player they like so much.
00:09:19John, we mentioned that fearsome Chicago defense,
00:09:21but one of the things you can do against Chicago
00:09:24is throw the ball if you can avoid the pass rush.
00:09:27Eason there, a short three-step drop.
00:09:29Good quick pattern run by Williams.
00:09:31Here's the inside of that Chicago defense.
00:09:36So the Patriots got a first down at the 47.
00:09:39Bears lead in the first quarter, 7-0.
00:09:43Second back through was Tony Collins,
00:09:45and he runs the ball for very little
00:09:47as the Bears shut it down.
00:09:48Singletary, number 50, the middle linebacker, got him.
00:09:51He was the NFC Defensive Player of the Year.
00:09:53Otis Wilson and Marshall on the outside
00:09:55are almost as good.
00:09:56That's a real trio.
00:09:58The secondary corners, Richardson and Frazier,
00:10:02had some trouble covering last week against Tampa Bay.
00:10:04Then Frazier came up with a big play in the third quarter,
00:10:06ran one back for a touchdown and interception
00:10:08and turned the game.
00:10:09Chicago Bears just inserted their refrigerator.
00:10:12One of my favorite guys.
00:10:14William Perry, 13 1⁄2 pounds at birth,
00:10:17considerably more now.
00:10:19Big William never lifted a weight or watched his own.
00:10:22Here is Tony Eason dropping the throw in the flat.
00:10:25He skips it.
00:10:26Whoa.
00:10:27Going for Craig James, and Tony Eason
00:10:29will get up off the bottom.
00:10:31There's a lot of things about William Perry
00:10:33that have been printed here in the paper in Chicago.
00:10:36Buddy Ryan called him a wasted...
00:10:38My goodness gracious.
00:10:40Weight unknown.
00:10:41Yeah, he makes everybody out there look small, doesn't he?
00:10:44He's got a brother who weighs like 220,
00:10:47and they ask him, what'd you eat?
00:10:49And he said, we ate whatever William left us.
00:10:53From the shotgun on third and eighth.
00:10:56And Eason does very well just to go down
00:10:59before he gets hit with a head-on shot from Singletary.
00:11:02And then a linebacker from Baylor coming untouched
00:11:05up the middle.
00:11:0672 sacks last season by this defense,
00:11:10and almost 30% up on players untouched.
00:11:13There's another one.
00:11:14Mike Singletary.
00:11:15Recognition by the New England Patriot offensive line
00:11:18is vitally important.
00:11:20And that time, you just can't turn anybody loose
00:11:23on a quarterback like that,
00:11:24but it happens so often against this defense.
00:11:27Ken Taylor.
00:11:28Singletary.
00:11:29They show up so many schemes
00:11:30rushing the passer under defensive coordinator Buddy Ryan.
00:11:33As we saw that time,
00:11:35there was nobody there between the quarterback
00:11:37and the middle linebacker who wasn't coming.
00:11:39Here's the punt now by Camarillo.
00:11:40Hits a spiral downfield.
00:11:42It'll be taken at the 15-yard line.
00:11:46Ken Taylor runs it back.
00:11:47He's up to the 26.
00:11:48And so there, the Bears in the lead.
00:11:507-0 with 942 to play in the first quarter.
00:11:53Go back on offense for a second time.
00:11:56First scoring strike was a 35-yard touchdown pass play
00:12:00to Dennis McKinnon.
00:12:01We'll be back right after this.
00:12:07Back at Soldier Field on a beautiful day in Chicago.
00:12:09Don Crickey with Bob Trumpey.
00:12:11Bears lead in the first quarter.
00:12:127-0.
00:12:13Now they have their second possession of the game.
00:12:157-0.
00:12:16Now they have their second possession
00:12:17going 1st and 10 from their 26-yard line.
00:12:25Gary straight ahead by Walter Payton
00:12:27is out to the 32-yard line.
00:12:29The score is starting to come in.
00:12:32Yet Anderson has thrown a touchdown pass
00:12:34to Stanford Jennings,
00:12:35and the Bengals lead the favorite St. Louis Cardinals
00:12:37at St. Louis.
00:12:387-0 in the first quarter.
00:12:40Eddie Murray kicked a field goal for the Lions,
00:12:42and they lead the Cowboys 3-0 at Pontiac, Michigan.
00:12:45Dallas is a tough customer, though.
00:12:48Yeah, especially against Washington.
00:12:50They ate them up on Monday night, didn't they?
00:12:5344-14.
00:12:55Now second down and about four for Chicago.
00:12:59Sui, good execution by the Bears,
00:13:02and Matt Sui runs ahead to the 44-yard line,
00:13:05a gain on the play of 12 yards.
00:13:07Ronnie Lippitt, one of the corners,
00:13:09knocked him down for the Patriots.
00:13:11When you have a foe in the line of scrimmage like this,
00:13:14credit must go to the offensive line of the Chicago Bears.
00:13:17On this particular play, watch Andre Tippett.
00:13:20He's the weak side linebacker here,
00:13:22pursues down the line, and then Keith Van Horn, 78,
00:13:25doing his job, realizing the value of Tippett
00:13:28to that defense, just gives him a shove,
00:13:30and there's a nice pickup by Matt Sui,
00:13:33who now has two carries for 21 yards.
00:13:35And the Bears have a first down at their 44.
00:13:39McMahon sprinting away from the rush, unloads.
00:13:42Walter takes it and goes out of bounds.
00:13:44There was little or no gain.
00:13:46Garen Barris unloaded on Jim McMahon, too.
00:13:49I always liked Trump, Matt Sui's assessment.
00:13:52He said the best backfield in the NFL,
00:13:54best backfield combination,
00:13:56is Walter Payton and anyone else.
00:13:59Washington, not in good humor after that loss at Dallas,
00:14:03has just gone in front.
00:14:05Theismann throwing to Calvin Muhammad
00:14:07for a 17-yard touchdown.
00:14:10Here's the old and the new for the New England Patriots.
00:14:13Steve Grogan, for years the quarterback.
00:14:15Now he's kind of the professor for Tony Eason,
00:14:19the young man out of Illinois.
00:14:21Second down and 9, Chicago, from the Bears, 45.
00:14:26The Bears lead 7-0 in the first quarter.
00:14:29McMahon sends in and will he go?
00:14:33Takes the defense down and out.
00:14:36They've been tough on Willie, and the Boos start to cascade down.
00:14:40He can run faster than anybody out there,
00:14:42but he's got 9-1 speed and 12 second hands so far.
00:14:47Let's watch Andre Tippett again.
00:14:49One of the things the New England Patriots must do
00:14:51is get Tippett free on the quarterback.
00:14:53Watch the little game he runs with Ken Sims.
00:14:55Comes inside, cut by Matt Sui.
00:14:58So far, the Chicago Bears have neutralized Andre Tippett.
00:15:01That ball should have been caught, too.
00:15:04But golf will be free deep.
00:15:06You can bank on it.
00:15:07There's nobody out there that can run with him.
00:15:10About two people in the world as fast,
00:15:12and neither of them play for New England.
00:15:15Offside, the Patriots could have left early again.
00:15:17Here's a high ball and a stick put on McKinnon
00:15:20as the ball flies overhead.
00:15:23That will be on Tippett.
00:15:24That's the second time they've caught him offside.
00:15:26Obviously, McMahon varying his snap count.
00:15:29In that time, the New England Patriots had 9 guys at the line of scrimmage
00:15:33taking a page from the Chicago Bears' defensive thinking.
00:15:38Offside, 56 defense, third down.
00:15:43So Tippett missed firing early in the game,
00:15:45but before it's over, he will have the quarterback.
00:15:49He's one of the great players in the league right now.
00:15:51Yeah, and I think Jim McMahon has to be the only player
00:15:53in the history of the game to go out with a lacerated kidney last year,
00:15:58missed the last half of the season on a hit against the Los Angeles Raiders.
00:16:01Now he's wearing a flak jacket.
00:16:04The Bears have won 14 of 17 games he's started.
00:16:07They want to keep him healthy.
00:16:09Right now, McMahon directs with a third and four coming out from midfield.
00:16:13Bears lead 7-0 first quarter.
00:16:15Payton in trouble and is knocked down for a loss,
00:16:19so Chicago will have to punt the ball to the Patriots
00:16:21with eight minutes to play and the clock running in the first quarter.
00:16:26Maury Buford is in to punt now for Chicago.
00:16:29Chicago, newly acquired, came in and replaced the incumbent David Finzer
00:16:32who was here last season.
00:16:37Finzer's seen enough of Maury Buford when he was trying out for San Diego.
00:16:40Buford beat him out, then he comes to Chicago, does the kicking,
00:16:43and Buford comes here.
00:16:45Bob Thomas, the longtime Bear kicker, place kicker,
00:16:48leading scorer in Chicago history, is now San Diego Charger.
00:16:51He signed as a free agent with them last week.
00:16:55Irving Fryer is back, a game-breaker from Nebraska.
00:16:59High punt, knocked down field as they angle for the corner, it skips in,
00:17:02and so the ball will come out to the Patriot 20.
00:17:05After a 51-yard punt, New England gets the ball, trailing 7-0 with 7-17
00:17:10to play in the first quarter.
00:17:12We'll be back to Soldier Field in Chicago after this.
00:17:20Soldier Field in Chicago is sold out as the Bears look to go.
00:17:28Right now, New England trailing 7-0, goes to the offense on first down,
00:17:33Eason throwing on the outlet to Derek Ramsey.
00:17:36Now while we have a moment, let's go to Bob Costas.
00:17:42All right, Don.
00:17:43At RFK Stadium, the Redskins take a 7-0 lead on the Oilers,
00:17:4617-yarder Theismann to Calvin Muhammad.
00:17:48A reminder, be with us at halftime.
00:17:50NFL 85 will have Kellen Winslow and William Andrews again,
00:17:53this time responding to Gale Sayers' assertion that modern players
00:17:55don't bounce back as quickly from injuries.
00:18:00Interesting to hear.
00:18:02640 to play, first quarter.
00:18:04Patriots got four on that pass play.
00:18:07Eason's very quick, very sure of foot.
00:18:10Here's a long ball, and there's nobody within 30 or 40 yards of it.
00:18:14He had Jones running an out pattern, Cedric Jones.
00:18:18Detroit with a surprise over the favorite Cowboys,
00:18:21now extending the lead, the Lions up 10-0.
00:18:24Here's a look at the playoffs.
00:18:25Joe Kipple threw a 21-yard touchdown pass to Jeff Chadwick.
00:18:29The Eagles owner said they were going to the playoffs,
00:18:31but so far it doesn't look that way.
00:18:32They've not scored through the first five quarters of the season.
00:18:35Well, they may go to the playoffs,
00:18:36but it looks like they may have to buy a ticket.
00:18:38Right.
00:18:40They're starting a rookie today, Randall Cunningham.
00:18:43Jaworski's on the pine.
00:18:44Yeah, Jaws was not too pleased with that choice either.
00:18:48Might be in there by halftime.
00:18:51And a long five now as they go from the shotgun.
00:18:55Patriots give Eason time.
00:18:56He throws a pass that drops.
00:18:59Derwin Williams might have been looking for the sideline.
00:19:03He could have had that ball easily, though.
00:19:04Well, the encouraging thing for the New England Patriots,
00:19:06so, Don, is that they have had receivers open.
00:19:11And the offensive line has protected Eason enough for him to throw the ball down the field.
00:19:17Really haven't seen the Bears in just one time in that all-out 46 pass rush.
00:19:22And that time, Mike Singletary got to them, but nevertheless, fourth down.
00:19:27So, Rich Camarillo, who was a Pro Bowl punter two years ago,
00:19:31had a lot of problems with injuries last year.
00:19:33He's ready to kick it downfield to Ken Taylor.
00:19:37Big rush.
00:19:38Camarillo reels it low.
00:19:39That's one of the all-time punts.
00:19:41Look at this.
00:19:42That's amazing.
00:19:44It goes into the end zone.
00:19:47Line of scrimmage.
00:19:4875-yard punt.
00:19:52It'll list, though, at a 55 because it went into the end zone,
00:19:55and he kicked it from his own 15-yard line.
00:20:02Rich Camarillo actually had that in the air 85 yards.
00:20:07It's a 75-yard gross punt, 55 yards net because it went into the end zone.
00:20:14Now the Bears go again, leading 7-0 first quarter.
00:20:16Home run ball, Willie Galt.
00:20:18Can't quite get to it, but he was open.
00:20:24McMahon knew he had six, and he had the ball a little bit closer to Willie Galt.
00:20:28Rod McSwain on the coverage.
00:20:30Fahd Ravez, another in the line of United Nations kickers for the Dolphins.
00:20:34Hit a field goal.
00:20:35Miami leads Indianapolis 3-0.
00:20:39Gary Epremian, Uwe von Schaumann, and now Fahd Ravez.
00:20:46McMahon has thrown five times, has completed three for Coach Ditkin and his Bears,
00:20:5149 yards and a one-touchdown of 32 yards to Dennis McKinnon.
00:20:55It's 7-0 Chicago as the Bears load up receivers on the left side.
00:21:01That's McKinnon in motion.
00:21:05It fits my left early again as they go to Walter Payton on a draw up the middle,
00:21:08and he is across the 25.
00:21:11No flag.
00:21:12Steve Nelson, the linebacker, was able to get back.
00:21:15The Bears are trying to balance their offense.
00:21:18Last week they ran the ball 34 times, passed the ball 34 times, which is highly unusual.
00:21:24The Chicago Bears were the only team in the NFC last year to rush for more yards
00:21:28than they passed for.
00:21:31Travis gets the big press with his Chicago team, as you know, Trump,
00:21:34but really the offense with McMahon at the helm could take them maybe all the way.
00:21:38They're that good with McMahon in there.
00:21:40Last year they needed to get very little points to win because their defense was so good,
00:21:46but McMahon can get them a lot.
00:21:48They came back last week when they were outscored early.
00:21:51Here's a throw, and McKinnon shows his heart coming across the middle,
00:21:54a man who caught the touchdown ball.
00:21:56Takes a double hit.
00:21:57Rob McSwain got him hard, but McKinnon is across the 30.
00:22:00He has a first down for Chicago.
00:22:02Last year the Chicago Bears won every game they played in the regular season
00:22:09when they allowed 14 or fewer points,
00:22:11and they lost every game they played in the regular season
00:22:14when they allowed more than 14 points.
00:22:16How about this?
00:22:17In 11 of the 16 games that the Bears played last year,
00:22:19their defense allowed their opponents less than 300 total yards of offense.
00:22:29Right now, their defense is looking on.
00:22:32Chicago's offense has had the ball most of the time.
00:22:34Bears are leading 7-0.
00:22:41Out to the 35-yard line.
00:22:43One of the defensive coaches for the Patriots, Eddie Kaya,
00:22:46is telling us that not only do the Bears come at you with that hard-nosed football,
00:22:49it's been a Chicago hallmark over the many decades,
00:22:52but also he says they have every gadget play known to man.
00:22:55That's true.
00:22:56Notice an injury, apparently, for the New England Patriots.
00:22:59Rodney Swain playing cornerback replacing Ronnie Lippitt.
00:23:03He was getting his ankle taped on the sideline.
00:23:06Of course, that leaves just one defensive back left
00:23:08for the already injured New England Patriots,
00:23:11and that's Jim Bowman for the fifth defensive back.
00:23:16Swain is reversed.
00:23:18Dennis McKinnon, he eludes one tackler.
00:23:20Blocker's there.
00:23:21Now the Patriots stop it.
00:23:23Oh!
00:23:24It's Andre Lippitt.
00:23:27Got a man throwing people down.
00:23:29Let's go to Bob Costas again.
00:23:33Well, Don Skins back to Cricky and Trumpy.
00:23:37And the Skins apparently back on track after an embarrassment Monday night.
00:23:41What was it?
00:23:42It was Joe Theismann's birthday,
00:23:43and Dennis Thurman, one of the Dallas cornerbacks,
00:23:45said Joe has given out the gifts on his birthday.
00:23:47Yes, he was.
00:23:48The Dallas fans were singing happy birthday to him, too,
00:23:51with the score 44-14.
00:23:53Through five interceptions.
00:23:55Jim McMahon throws.
00:23:57He's high, and those Patriots will hit a receiver
00:23:59when he comes into their area.
00:24:02Brad Anderson was the intended receiver,
00:24:04so the Bears have to punt it again
00:24:06after that opening drive when they took it into the end zone.
00:24:09They almost did in this one.
00:24:10You recall that near completion to golf.
00:24:12Once he gets it, he can put six in the book.
00:24:17I was rather surprised at that reverse call by the Chicago Bears.
00:24:21An odd call to make at that position on the field.
00:24:29Laurie Buford in to punt again for Chicago.
00:24:31That's Irving Fryer back to his 20.
00:24:373-0-3 to play in the first quarter.
00:24:39A good punt by Buford.
00:24:40It's going to be very high,
00:24:42and Fryer is forced into a fair catch at his 26-yard line.
00:24:4539-yard punt, but that's the net yardage also,
00:24:47as there's no return.
00:24:51So with 2.55 to play in the first quarter,
00:24:54and the Bears in the lead 7-0,
00:24:57the Chicago defense comes out.
00:24:59The defense has been tough against some fine teams,
00:25:01two of the best in the West in the AFC.
00:25:03Never lost to an AFC team here in Soldier Field,
00:25:09except for the Bengals, I believe, in overtime back in 1980.
00:25:14They like playing here at Soldier Field.
00:25:16The Bears have a string of six straight wins over AFC opponents here in Chicago.
00:25:20Eason stands in.
00:25:21What an arm he has.
00:25:22And Tony Eason fires out the flank,
00:25:25coming down with the ball and getting a first down on the play
00:25:29was Cedric Jones.
00:25:33St. Louis ties the ball game up with Cincinnati.
00:25:35Neil Lomax, a 27-yard pass to Farrell, 7-7 now.
00:25:45Eagles get on the board with a field goal.
00:25:47It's a 10-3 game, Veterans Stadium.
00:25:50First and 10 now for the Patriots,
00:25:52who trail late in the first quarter 7-0.
00:25:55Here comes Jesse Craig James,
00:25:57and the Bears aren't going to give him a thing.
00:25:59They're going to give him about a five-yard deficit.
00:26:03Dave Dewarson, starting at strong safety for the absent Todd Bell,
00:26:09a Pro Bowl strong safety who's holding out.
00:26:11Dewarson's come on, though, third-year player for Notre Dame,
00:26:14and Singletary's always coming out.
00:26:16This guy showed up late.
00:26:17He was a holdout, too, but he is a human projectile.
00:26:20Taking on Pete Rock there.
00:26:22That guy works every single down.
00:26:24He's kind of the inspirational leader of that defense, too.
00:26:30Going wide to the right now is Starry.
00:26:36Derwin Williams on the left flank on second and 14 for New England.
00:26:42Four-man rush.
00:26:43Eason lets her rip.
00:26:47Out throws his receiver and the coverage.
00:26:50You know he can put it about as far as Camarillo can kick it.
00:26:53Starry can run under most of them, too.
00:26:58Last week in the opening game of the season for the Bear defense,
00:27:01they struggled somewhat, both offensively and defensively, in the first half.
00:27:06But in the second half, they really got down on the Tampa Bay Bucs.
00:27:11They allowed only 95 total yards in four first downs in the second half.
00:27:15Pats have only 20 yards of offense so far today, Don.
00:27:19Stanley Morgan, one of the great ones, is out in the flank now
00:27:22for the Patriots on the shotgun offense, third and 14.
00:27:28Singletary.
00:27:30Singletary.
00:27:31He missed the interception, as you saw.
00:27:33Then he figured that maybe James got it, so he was going to pop him good.
00:27:36Well, James did a good job, Don, in making contact with Singletary.
00:27:41Oh, I'm bumbling the ball a little bit there.
00:27:44Wanted to make sure that he didn't catch it.
00:27:46James with a good reach.
00:27:47He sees the ball and now watch.
00:27:48He turns around and plays defender.
00:27:50Makes sure he can't go after it.
00:27:52He saw the ball down.
00:27:53He just wanted to hit somebody anyway.
00:27:54Yeah, well, you can't trust those linebackers.
00:27:59This one's one of the great ones.
00:28:01Two straight Pro Bowls.
00:28:02Leader of the defense, too.
00:28:04He tells people what to do out there.
00:28:07Camarillo, two points, a 60.5-yard average.
00:28:15Bears almost had one player too many on the field.
00:28:17This time, Camarillo hangs it high.
00:28:19Taylor comes over and then pops out of bounds at about the 32.
00:28:24Next Sunday, join NBC Sports for exciting football actions.
00:28:28We continue our coverage of the 1985 football season.

00:28:35Plus, other regional action.
00:28:37Check your local listings for the game and the time in your area.
00:28:39The action gets underway with NFL 85 and Spav Costas.
00:28:43Your team plays here, so kick off next Sunday again with NBC Sports.
00:28:47Don, for the New England Patriots, Ronnie Lippitt back in the ballgame.
00:28:50Apparently, whatever injury he had was not serious.
00:28:59Bears in the lead with 221 to play in the quarter.
00:29:03Up the middle, a hard-charging fullback from Illinois, Calvin Thomas.
00:29:08From the south side of Chicago at 245 pounds, getting a lot more playing time.
00:29:13Dennis Owens, an O's tackle, knocked him down along with Toby Williams for the Patriots.
00:29:17Things have kind of slowed down here for the Chicago Bears offense.
00:29:20That opening drive they had, 69 yards, five plays, and 3-0-3.
00:29:24Now the Patriots defense is doing their job.
00:29:29Raymond Berry on the sideline.
00:29:30He's much more active when he came in halfway through the season last year.
00:29:33He really let the offensive defense up to the assistants.
00:29:36This year, he's the offensive coordinator.
00:29:39Look at this formation.
00:29:43Second and six.
00:29:44Peyton looks for room to go, and the Patriots doing a good job
00:29:47filling the gaps with the linebackers.
00:29:49Steve Nelson was in the play along with Ken Bray.
00:29:52Steve Nelson was in the play along with Ken Sims.
00:29:55One of the things you always have to watch with the Chicago Bears
00:29:58is their big playability.
00:30:01Jimbo Colbert over on that other side, going against Toby Williams.
00:30:05He gets him on the ground board.
00:30:0662, the offensive guard, a converted defensive lineman in college,
00:30:09but the women Patriots are doing a good job at the line of scrimmage.
00:30:13Jimbo Colbert, a great offensive tackle, only 25.
00:30:17He's the youngest captain in the NFL, playing left tackle for Chicago.
00:30:22Former number one out of Pittsburgh.
00:30:23Third down and a long four now for the Bears.
00:30:29Here comes the Blitz.
00:30:30They pick it up.
00:30:31McMahon's going to run, but not far enough.
00:30:33He got to the 40, needed to get to the 42.
00:30:36So the Bears, after scoring on their first drive today,
00:30:39a 32-yard touchdown pass to Dennis McKinnon from McMahon,
00:30:42have now been stopped their last three drives.
00:30:44Ken Sims and Don Blackman there to make the tackle.
00:30:48They're going to keep the offense in on fourth and short.
00:30:51They're finally going to putt it now.
00:30:52Now they're coming out.
00:30:53Yeah, it does appear.
00:30:54They're just doing a good job defensively, but they've got to today
00:30:57because the New England offense is going to have problems throughout the day
00:31:02with that 46 defense and all the pass rush.
00:31:05New England Patriots defense have to play an excellent game today
00:31:08to keep the ball club in the game.
00:31:11And again, Irving Fryer is back deep for New England.
00:31:15This time it is 15-yard line.
00:31:18Buford gets it off against a big rush.
00:31:22Fryer can go, but not here.
00:31:24A superb special teams play.
00:31:26Dennis Gentry, a running back, came down and, as you saw, got an ankle high.
00:31:3138-yard punt, a four-yard return.
00:31:33Had Gentry not made that play, Irving Fryer might still be running.
00:31:36Patriots almost blocked that punt.
00:31:38Rod McSwain, a defensive back, was untouched and right in the face of the punter.
00:31:44That would have been a big play for the New England Patriots,
00:31:46one that you need to make in a game like this against a quality opponent.
00:31:51Chicago Bears did play in the NFC Championship game last year.
00:31:56Coach Dick seems a little exercised.
00:32:00He can dish out some exercise.
00:32:04Here's a throw and a completion on the last play of the first quarter.
00:32:08Tony Collins coming out of the Patriots' backfield.
00:32:11And that's the end of the first quarter with the score, Chicago 7,
00:32:14and the Patriots nothing.
00:32:21The Chicago Bears jumped off to that 7-0 lead.
00:32:24It looked like the Patriots were going to be in trouble,
00:32:26maybe in the midst of a blowout, but they've come right back with good defense.
00:32:29The pressure is on the offensive line of the New England Patriots to protect Easton.
00:32:33So far, they've done that.
00:32:34The pressure is also on the defense of the New England Patriots
00:32:37to at least make it tough for the Chicago Bears to score.
00:32:40And that first drive notwithstanding, they've done that pretty good, too.
00:32:45Look at the time of possession, though.
00:32:4811-3.
00:32:50My goodness, Patriots.
00:32:51Not going to get the end zone with minus two yards.
00:32:53Yeah.
00:32:54Last week, they rushed for 208 yards.
00:32:57So, so far, the Chicago Bears defense is doing a pretty good job against New England.
00:33:01Here's Easton standing in, gets some time,
00:33:03lofts it out, and Derek Ramsey comes down with the ball.
00:33:06Set a Patriot team record with 66 receptions last year.
00:33:11They're doing a good job.
00:33:12And the Bears have been coming with a four-man rush.
00:33:14Patriot blocking has been excellent.
00:33:16They've really given Easton some time.
00:33:17It's when Singletary and Wilson start to come from the linebackers that he's pressured.
00:33:2112 yards on the catch, and you're right.
00:33:23So far, they haven't really put those eight or nine guys up at the line of scrimmage,
00:33:27probably out of respect to Tony Easton's arm
00:33:30and the speed of the wide receivers of the New England Patriots.
00:33:33They've got some burners on this team.
00:33:37Patriots with about their best field position in the ballgame so far, out to their 42.
00:33:43James running, penalty marker in as he's hit at the 50.
00:33:49Scott Norwood just kicked a 32-yard field goal at Giant Stadium
00:33:53where the Buffalo Bills have taken a 3-0 lead over the New York Jets.
00:33:57They got holding on the New England Patriots.
00:34:00So that good field position ends right now.
00:34:02Done.
00:34:03Holding.
00:34:0458 offense.
00:34:05First down.
00:34:06Pete Brock, the center on Dan Hampton, number 99.
00:34:09So far, this game has not had the pace that I thought it would have.
00:34:14What were you looking for?
00:34:15Well, a lot more activity out of the Chicago Bears' defense,
00:34:20a little more running out of the New England Patriots' offense, minus 2 yards,
00:34:24That's one of the staples of the New England offense.
00:34:26The Bears have gotten a little conservative, I think,
00:34:28because their corners were getting beat last week on Tampa Bay.
00:34:31They were behind 28-17 at the half, so they've shown less blitz.
00:34:37That time, they came with a blitz, but leaving early was Otis Wilson.
00:34:43All three Chicago linebackers, Wilson, Singletary, and Marshall,
00:34:47in the true Bear tradition.
00:34:49All three Chicago linebackers, Wilson, Singletary, and Marshall,
00:34:52in the true Bear tradition.
00:34:54They had an illegal snap on 58 offense.
00:34:56Good.
00:34:57First down.
00:34:58Pete Brock.
00:34:59All three of those starting linebackers were called for personal fouls last week.
00:35:02Don, I'll tell you, one of the problems that the New England Patriots are going to have
00:35:05is when the Bears go to that real rush and pressure defense like they showed there,
00:35:10the offensive lineman must identify who is their responsibility
00:35:15and who the backs are supposed to block.
00:35:18So you can understand Pete Brock trying to snap the ball eight yards deep to Tony Eason
00:35:24and still looking for who he's got to block.
00:35:26There's going to be some confusion sometimes, and they just can't panic.
00:35:30Just keep your head here.
00:35:34First down now and 25.
00:35:36Bumblebee ball, but James picks it up.
00:35:39Gets a little back to the 30.
00:35:41We had a chance to visit some length last night with Raymond Berry,
00:35:44the coach of the Patriots, and he said,
00:35:46You can draw things up on the board, but he said then you have to deal with reality.
00:35:50When you play Chicago, you don't have time to execute plays like you like the passing plays.
00:35:55You've got to get the ball away in a hurry.
00:35:57Your quarterback's going to be in his back.
00:35:58No question, one of the problems the New England Patriots have
00:36:00is just seven days to prepare for this Chicago Bears defense.
00:36:03It's a very difficult defense to settle in your player's mind
00:36:07if this is the way we'll attack it, and it'll work.
00:36:10You've got two coaches who've done some catching.
00:36:12In the inning between them, Berry and Ditka caught over 1,000 passes
00:36:15during their playing careers.
00:36:17Berry had well over 600 going to the Hall of Fame.
00:36:20Tip ball!
00:36:23And it'll be third down and about 22.
00:36:26That was intended for Derrick Ramsey, and he was open.
00:36:30Wilbur Marshall appeared to get a hand on the ball.
00:36:32He's playing outside linebacker, number one out of Florida a year ago.
00:36:36He's moved in as a starter because Al Harris is still away.
00:36:39He's a starter.
00:36:40He and Todd Bell want more money.
00:36:42I think they're the only two holdouts left in the NFL, too, aren't they?
00:36:45No, the Giants have an all-pro corner.
00:36:47Mike Haynes.
00:36:48A lot of them have the same agent, though.
00:36:50Yeah, New England 0 of 3 in third down conversion so far today.
00:36:58From the shotgun on third and 22, Tony Eason standing back.
00:37:04Four-man rush.
00:37:06Loops it out with the ball.
00:37:08Very nicely is Derwin Williams, but he's going to be way short of a first down
00:37:12as Williams is out to the 40-yard line.
00:37:14Got nine, but the Patriots have to punt the ball.
00:37:17Leslie Frazier on the tackle.
00:37:19One of the guys that the New England Patriots want to get into the ballgame
00:37:22is Stanley Morgan.
00:37:23Last time these two teams played, this guy had receptions for 130 yards,
00:37:27but you can...
00:37:28What is that?
00:37:29Looks like Greco-Roman wrestling there at the line of scrimmage.
00:37:32That's really stretching the one-bump rule.
00:37:36Stanley Morgan, his statistics over his career, he's caught over 300 passes
00:37:40and averaged almost 21 yards a catch.
00:37:42He can go.
00:37:44Buford ready to punt it now.
00:37:46Back in is Camarillo to punt it.
00:37:48And back deep is Ken Taylor for the Bears.
00:37:51On the run, feels it nicely.
00:37:52He's swept under.
00:37:54But good field position.
00:37:56That's at the 32-yard line with 12.21 to play in the first half.
00:38:01And we'll be back to Soldier Field in a moment.
00:38:09Back at Soldier Field, Don Crickey with Bob Trump.
00:38:12He bears lead early in the second quarter, 7-0.
00:38:15As McMahon takes a look after a play fake, he unloads long.
00:38:19Way too long.
00:38:21Going for the ball was Ken Margerum.
00:38:24Not a real fast receiver, but a shorthanded one from Stanford.
00:38:29Philly getting closer now.
00:38:31Another field goal by Paul McFadden.
00:38:33It's a 10-6 game.
00:38:34Rams leading at Veterans Stadium in Philadelphia.
00:38:36Interesting choice of play calls there.
00:38:39McMahon now 4 of 8, 55 yards and a touchdown.
00:38:42But I wonder why they would go so deep there so quick.
00:38:46That's interesting, Trump.
00:38:48He's looking to get a lot in a hurry, McMahon.
00:38:49He's gone deep a lot here.
00:38:51Once for 7.
00:38:52To Margerum, he's not the quickest receiver you have.
00:38:54Gault can run by anybody.
00:38:59Calvin Thomas in motion on 2nd and 10.
00:39:02Here's McMahon.
00:39:03Nice strike.
00:39:04Down to his tight end, Emery Moorhead.
00:39:06And he is across the midfield line for a 20-yard gain.
00:39:10And the Chicago Bears cross into New England area.
00:39:13Much better choice.
00:39:14Play action fake to Walter Payton.
00:39:16Ran Thomas in motion.
00:39:18The defense had to wait to see if Walter Payton was going to get the ball.
00:39:21That freed Emery Moorhead wide open.
00:39:24And the Bears so far in the preseason and the first game of the 1985 season,
00:39:28it seems that when they throw the ball to the tight end, good things happen.
00:39:31This team has really not given their tight ends much respect
00:39:34since Mike Ditka left eons ago.
00:39:41That's the first time they've gone to a tight end in the game.
00:39:43And now McMahon lost one out in the far flank.
00:39:45A nice play by Margerum.
00:39:47Those were sure hands.
00:39:49He caught a ton of balls from John Elway when they were both at Stanford.
00:39:5313-yard catch by Margerum.
00:39:55Mets have had trouble at Montreal.
00:39:57They're winning right now.
00:39:58Mets trailing in the National League East.
00:40:00One half game behind the Cardinals starting today.
00:40:03Comment from Margerum.
00:40:04He missed the entire season last year with a bad knee.
00:40:06I'm happy to see him back on the field.
00:40:09Orthopedic surgery nowadays, since Bob Costas in NFL 85 is talking about injuries.
00:40:15The number of players who come back from major knee surgery now,
00:40:18the percentage is much higher back when,
00:40:20as opposed to when Gale Sears or Dick Butkus played.
00:40:25First down and 10.
00:40:27Hand off to Peyton.
00:40:29Fumble, free ball.
00:40:30Let's see who's got it.
00:40:31Looks like the Patriots.
00:40:32They do.
00:40:33New England gets the ball at the 37-yard line of the Patriots.
00:40:37So, the Bears' drive is stopped.
00:40:39And again, the Patriots take over with good field position,
00:40:41but they've not been close to a score.
00:40:44Haven't even been close to a long field goal in this game
00:40:46with virtually no offense.
00:40:4811-20 to play in the first half, and it's a 7-0 game, Chicago.
00:40:52Don Fred Marion came up with the ball.
00:40:53Watch the way Walter carries it.
00:40:55Got it in both hands and can't really tell who made the contact.
00:40:59Looked like Ben Thomas, who was in there playing the nose for the New England Patriots,
00:41:03jarred it loose.
00:41:05Fred Marion on the recovery.
00:41:07So, let's see if Eason can move now in this Bear defense.
00:41:11Showing blitz are the Bears.
00:41:18James runs right head-on into hard hits.
00:41:23Steve McMichael, an ex-Patriot, was there, along with Mike Hartenstein.
00:41:29The Jets have just put up a touchdown.
00:41:31Freeman McNeil on a 6-yard run.
00:41:33They now lead the Bills 7-3.
00:41:37Here's number 72, William Perry again.
00:41:40Bears' first round draft choice.
00:41:42The premier power rusher in the NFL.
00:41:49Second and nine now for New England.
00:41:52Eason gets time.
00:41:54He's intercepted.
00:41:56Finson.
00:42:00With his 32nd career interception.
00:42:05Now Derek Ramsey, the intended receiver, stopped dead in his tracks.
00:42:13This is something that Tony Eason doesn't do normally.
00:42:16He makes good choices, but here there's double coverage.
00:42:19You see a little bit of the pressure, but Ramsey stopped.
00:42:23And, of course, that made it easy for Gary Finsick.
00:42:26Now a turnover for Eason.
00:42:30And, of course, that made it easy for Gary Finsick.
00:42:33Now a turnover for each team.
00:42:35Watch William Perry up front.
00:42:39Good pressure.
00:42:40He turns around.
00:42:41Now he's going to be an offensive lineman.
00:42:43Whoa, that's a pulling guard right there.
00:42:46A few of them.
00:42:48Now the Bears go to the run.
00:42:49And Walter Payton on a flea flicker throws to McMahon.
00:42:52Lobs it up.
00:42:53The Patriots might get this one back.
00:42:56Good.
00:42:59Those are the trick plays that you're talking about.
00:43:02That'll be a touchback.
00:43:03New England ball at the 20.
00:43:06There was good penetration by the New England Patriots at the line of scrimmage.
00:43:11I think Mike Dixon would like to have.
00:43:13Now watch the penetration.
00:43:14You'll see.
00:43:15He comes up through there.
00:43:17It looks like Toby Williams gets right up in McMahon's face.
00:43:22The ball never should have been thrown.
00:43:24William Perry, who got beaten earlier, goes up against Margerum and comes down with the ball.
00:43:28That's a good rebound right there.
00:43:30New England ball.
00:43:32Their own 20-yard line.
00:43:34McMahon can't throw that ball.
00:43:36He's got to take a sack because that's another one of those trick plays.
00:43:40And the receiver's either open or not open.
00:43:42Don't try to force it in there.
00:43:44You can't throw the ball in that play.
00:43:45No.
00:43:46Just hit the ball.
00:43:48Yeah, just hit the ball.
00:43:49Just go on the ground.
00:43:50Go back.
00:43:51Go back in.
00:43:56Here's an incomplete going to Tony Collins as the Patriot offense has been unable to move the ball at all
00:44:03against the Chicago Bears defense.
00:44:05As a collegiate, talking about getting numbers.
00:44:09Jim McMahon, William Brigham Young, quarterback as a starter.
00:44:1322-3 record and had 71 NCAA passing records when he was done.
00:44:1871 national records.
00:44:20I guess it's just BYU.
00:44:22The air up there.
00:44:23Everybody who is a quarterback for BYU has a fair amount of NCAA passing records.
00:44:31Eason lobs it out.
00:44:34And Collins coming out of the backfield on second down and 10 gets a hit for about 5 or 6.
00:44:40Singletary got it.
00:44:42Like Singletary played every down.
00:44:45I like this type of offense by the New England Patriots.
00:44:48They employ the use of those running backs as delay receivers out of the backfield.
00:44:53Eason's had good time to throw, but you've got to be patient.
00:44:56Take 5 or 6 yards at a time and try to drive it down the field here.
00:44:59They've got 9.48 to go in the first half.
00:45:08Patriots trailing in the second quarter 7-0.
00:45:12Eason throwing off his back foot gets Ramsey and he's got a first down.
00:45:16Wilbur Marshall was with him.
00:45:17Eason against the big rush.
00:45:19Such a strong arm he's literally throwing a ball leaning back.
00:45:22Ramsey did a great job there.
00:45:24Wilbur Marshall faked the blitz.
00:45:27Contact between the linebacker and the tight end.
00:45:30Eason had time to wait for it.
00:45:32Ramsey gets the clearance and makes the catch.
00:45:35Marshall on the tackle but not before the first down.
00:45:39So the Patriots get 4 new downs with 9 minutes and 4 seconds in the clock running in the second quarter.
00:45:457-0 Chicago Bears scored on their opening possession.
00:45:48A 32 yard pass play from McMahon to Dennis McKinnon.
00:45:54James who ran well against the Packers last Sunday at Foxboro
00:46:00was knocked down by a former Patriot Steve McMichael.
00:46:02He's probably very motivated to do well against the Patriots.
00:46:05The Patriots drafted him in the third round and he wasn't much of a player.
00:46:10They didn't feel in camp and they cut him.
00:46:13Here's the signals coming in from Steve Grogan on the sideline.
00:46:16Raymond Berry right behind him.
00:46:18James Ford carries 2 yards.
00:46:20I think the New England Patriots now have less than 5 yards rushing offense.
00:46:28Tony Eason was a record setter at Illinois as a passer too.
00:46:31He's had 9 NCAA records.
00:46:34Coming out after McMahon.
00:46:36Eason takes a look.
00:46:39He does well with his reads.
00:46:41He looks all over the field even with the rush against him.
00:46:43That time it was a short game.
00:46:45Stanley Morgan coming over the middle was knocked down by Singletary.
00:46:48The Mets are powering away from Montreal 4-0.
00:46:53It's a game that they now have to win to catch up with the St. Louis Cardinals.
00:46:59That's for sure.
00:47:00Still a long way to go in the baseball season though.
00:47:037-44 to go on the first half here at Chicago.
00:47:06The Patriots come out trailing 7-0.
00:47:11The third down is 3 yards.
00:47:18That would have been it.
00:47:19Leslie Frazier who ran one back for a touchdown to turn around last Sunday
00:47:23here at Soldier Field against Tampa Bay had a play on that ball.
00:47:26He had an open lane to the end zone.
00:47:28Cedric Jones was the intended receiver.
00:47:30It appeared to be just a hitch.
00:47:32Which is a 5-yard straight down the field pattern stop
00:47:35and the quarterback throws you the ball.
00:47:37But Cedric Jones fell down.
00:47:40Hunter's getting a lot of work today here at Chicago on a beautiful September day.
00:47:44Temperature in the mid-60s.
00:47:45Clear sunny skies.
00:47:46Sailboats out on the lake.
00:47:48It can get mean in Chicago as the season wears on on the shores of Lake Michigan.
00:47:53But right now perfect playing conditions.
00:47:55It is breezy as Camarillo stands in.
00:47:58Hits another good punt downfield.
00:48:00Here's Ken Taylor for the Bears back at his 15.
00:48:06A marked in out of bounds at the 29-yard line.
00:48:1146-yard punt and a 14-yard return.
00:48:14So Chicago's offense comes back out and we will in a moment.
00:48:20Bears last three possessions.
00:48:22They have 87 yards passing, 51 rushing, 138 total yards.
00:48:27The Patriots 66 rushing.
00:48:29Excuse me, 66 passing, 4 rushing for a total of 70 yards.
00:48:34Total offense.
00:48:35Now the Bears go first and 10 from their 29-yard line.
00:48:40And here comes Walter but not very far.
00:48:43Didn't move out to the 32-yard line.
00:48:45Toby Williams knocked him down.
00:48:47Jim McMahon, the Bears quarterback, has a great attitude.
00:48:51He came in here and said we're going to win because I can't stand losing.
00:48:56Well, you better tell the Patriots that.
00:48:58We pause briefly for station identification.
00:49:01This is the NBC television network.
00:49:05You're watching Channel 17, WTVO Rockford.
00:49:10McMahon from Jersey City, New Jersey.
00:49:12That is country club living in Jersey City.
00:49:15He's used to a little pressure, isn't he?
00:49:17Second down and seven.
00:49:21Dennis Gentry running very nicely.
00:49:23Gets to the 35-yard line.
00:49:25Will it bring up third and about four?
00:49:27Washington has extended its lead now to 16-3.
00:49:32Dehas hit a field goal for the Oilers.
00:49:34Get them on the board.
00:49:36Walter Payton out of the ballgame again for the Chicago Bears.
00:49:39Gentry his replacement.
00:49:41Walter standing on the sideline.
00:49:42Doesn't appear to be anything wrong with him.
00:49:44He's just catching his breath.
00:49:45Payton 9 carries 26 yards.
00:49:47Well below his average.
00:49:48Guys that have known him all, Trump, say that McMahon kind of reminds them a little of Bobby Lane.
00:49:52Bobby Lane.
00:49:53Although McMahon's bigger than Bobby Lane.
00:49:57Let's see what he does on third down and three.
00:50:02It's a man.
00:50:03Let's see where they spot him.
00:50:04They're going to give him a first down.
00:50:06Margerum went where he had to go.
00:50:08The Patriots threw him back nine yards.
00:50:10Whoa.
00:50:11That's a very friendly spot.
00:50:13Now back to NFL 85, Bob.
00:50:18All right, Don.
00:50:19Early in the second quarter at the Meadowlands,
00:50:21it's Freeman McNeil from six yards out for the Jets' first touchdown.
00:50:24They go in front of the Buffalo Bills by a score of 7-3.
00:50:27Now let's get back to Soldier Field
00:50:29and the hardest-working men in football, Cricky and Trumpy.
00:50:33We're out there this year.
00:50:34We'll be there tomorrow night on NBC Radio
00:50:36when the Browns and the Steelers meet in Cleveland Stadium.
00:50:39I'll be wearing my hard hat.
00:50:41How about you?
00:50:42The blue collar bow.
00:50:43Yeah, you've got it.
00:50:44Right now, though, we have Jim McMahon firing for the Bears,
00:50:47and he is out to the midfield strike.
00:50:50A gain of about 10 yards.
00:50:52Well-thrown ball, and McMahon was decked when he released it.
00:50:55Coming on a blitz with Steelers.
00:50:58Coming on a blitz with Steve Nelson.
00:51:00The Patriots, so far today, do not have a sack,
00:51:04but they have been all over Jim McMahon.
00:51:06That time, Steve Nelson, pressure on McMahon.
00:51:10Couldn't really follow through.
00:51:11That's a great catch by McKinnon.
00:51:13He's having another good day.
00:51:16Dennis McKinnon, 6'1", 185, in his third year from Florida State.
00:51:22School has turned out a lot of good pro football players
00:51:25under Coach Bowser.
00:51:274.28 to play.
00:51:28First half, the Bears continue to lead 7-0.
00:51:31Matsui looks for some room and finds some.
00:51:34And on first down, he's ahead for about eight.
00:51:40Picking his way, Matsui, a very underrated fullback,
00:51:44does everything well, particularly block.
00:51:47You can see what he's picked up from Walter Payton,
00:51:49a little dance before he gets to the line of scrimmage.
00:51:52He has great faith in his offensive line.
00:51:54Watch the little dance.
00:51:55He goes, blip, blip, blip, blip, blip, blip,
00:51:57and right up through that line of scrimmage.
00:51:59Good bow by the Chicago offensive lineman.
00:52:02Nice little delay for about eight yards, second and two.
00:52:06McMahon has now put the ball up 13 times,
00:52:09completed eight for 101 yards, and a touchdown.
00:52:11He's been intercepted once.
00:52:13Matsui gets his number called again,
00:52:15and he responds with a first down carry for Chicago
00:52:17inside the New England 40.
00:52:20The strength of this New England defense
00:52:22is their two outside linebackers.
00:52:24We've talked a great deal about Andre Tippett.
00:52:26Don Blackman last week had three sacks.
00:52:29Big guy.
00:52:30Look at him shed those blockers.
00:52:32Still get in to make the tackle on Matsui.
00:52:35These two linebackers would play for anybody in the NFL,
00:52:38Blackman and Andre Tippett.
00:52:42Both of them with three sacks last week.
00:52:47But still, the Patriots feel their pass rush
00:52:50has to be better for the down lineman.
00:52:52Three minutes to go now.
00:52:53First half, Bears moving the ball
00:52:55and leading in the game 7-0.
00:52:57McMahon with a hard throw and a great catch by McKinnon.
00:53:01That's a big play by Dennis McKinnon.
00:53:04He took the punishment and held on.
00:53:07Great play.
00:53:08That was a wide receiver sandwich.
00:53:10Steve Nelson on the inside, Ronnie Lippitt on the outside.
00:53:13It's a little slant pass with acceleration.
00:53:17Now watch the hit.
00:53:18Goes up, knows when he comes down.
00:53:19There's going to be Patriots all over the place.
00:53:21Hangs on to the football.
00:53:23Nobody said this would be easy.
00:53:25Dennis McKinnon will pay the price.
00:53:27Those are times when you wish you had a skyhook.
00:53:29Just kind of hang up there.
00:53:34The Bears are moving now.
00:53:35McMahon with a sharp passing game
00:53:37after the offense misfired the last two possessions.
00:53:45Sui, nothing.
00:53:48Patriot linebackers led by Nelson and Johnny Rembert
00:53:51were right there to make the knockdown.
00:53:54At halftime, we'll be going to NFL 85 and Bob Costas
00:53:57to update the scoreboard on this second Sunday of play.
00:54:01Bears have a short week.
00:54:02They'll be against the Vikings on Thursday night.
00:54:05No game.
00:54:10The Patriot defense has given ground grudgingly
00:54:12to the premier runner in the history of the game,
00:54:14Walter Payton.
00:54:15He's had to work hard, so has Sui.
00:54:17Ninth play of the drive coming up now for Chicago.
00:54:19Bears leading 7-0 with two minutes to play
00:54:22in the first half.
00:54:23Don Fricke with Bob Trumpy.
00:54:24As you see, the great disparity running the ball.
00:54:27Patriots have almost nothing at all.
00:54:29Report from the bench is Walter Payton just getting a rest.
00:54:32Probably well-deserved.
00:54:33His 3,047 carries coming into this season.
00:54:40That's two of the most in history.
00:54:42Third down and about a yard.
00:54:45McMahon puts it up.
00:54:47Shouldn't have been thrown.
00:54:49The ball was tipped, and yet they came down with it.
00:54:53Coming up with the ball was a backup tight end,
00:54:55Tim Reitman, a 25-yard gain.
00:55:02Reitman, the first player to sign a U.S. football league
00:55:05contract on this ball, should not have been thrown.
00:55:07Don Blackman, 55, right in his face.
00:55:09The ball is tipped by Ray Claiborne, caught by Reitman.
00:55:13But that one worked.
00:55:15Telling you, it's courting disaster if he throws it up
00:55:18like that much more often.
00:55:25Once again, down on this play, you'll see 55 of the New England
00:55:27Patriots, Don Blackman, right in McMahon's face.
00:55:30No way this ball should have been thrown.
00:55:32Luckily, Ray Claiborne, even though he's been taking
00:55:34receiving drills, can't hang on to the football.
00:55:37I guess good teams get good breaks.
00:55:39That's twice now McMahon, though, is thrown with very poor,
00:55:43in my estimation, very poor choices.
00:55:46He was fortunate there, though, and the Bears are now
00:55:49challenging first and goal.
00:56:05He's going right for an offensive tackle.
00:56:07Andy Frederick.
00:56:09Might have been a tackle-eligible play.
00:56:11Had to be if he's downfield and the ball is thrown, it's a penalty.
00:56:14It was originally designed to go to Dennis Gentry, number 29.
00:56:19A little delay, but it was well covered by the New England Patriots.
00:56:22Patriots defense got to feel pretty good right now in this first half.
00:56:27They've done a good job against this very potent Chicago offense.
00:56:31Report from the Bears bench now.
00:56:32Walter Payton does have a sore neck.
00:56:34Should return in the second half.
00:56:37Silly and Gentry are the runners now for Chicago's second and goal.
00:56:40From the five, Bears lead 7-0.
00:56:42Gentry pays the price as the Patriot defense again shoots the gaps
00:56:49on that goal line, and the clock runs down to 116
00:56:52and ticking in the second quarter.
00:56:54Third down arises.
00:56:55This drive started at the Chicago Bears 28-yard line.
00:56:59That was the 11th play in the drive.
00:57:07Bears 3 of 5 on third down conversions.
00:57:12This one is third and goal.
00:57:17You talked earlier, Trump, about good things happening
00:57:20when the Bears go to their tight end.
00:57:22They've only thrown to Emory Moorhead once,
00:57:24then of course that big gainer to Reitman.
00:57:27Right now there's a break in the action, though,
00:57:29and Jim McMahon's coming over for some counsel.
00:57:34Back at Soldier Field, the Bears are down close,
00:57:36but they're having problems as now.
00:57:38Walter Payton goes in with third down and goal
00:57:40coming up from the three-yard line up New England.
00:57:43Walter Payton is an excellent passer,
00:57:46along with being a great receiver and runner.
00:57:50Andy Frederick is still in the ballgame.
00:57:52Number 71, offensive tackle.
00:57:55His last snapping lined up as a tight end.
00:57:58I'd look for the option pass by Walter Payton.
00:58:02He's been very good in his career,
00:58:05percentage-wise, throwing for touchdowns.
00:58:09Frederick at the top of the screen is an eligible receiver,
00:58:12even though he's wearing number 71.
00:58:14Lined up as a tight end, another tight end over with him
00:58:16as a wingback, Emory Moorhead.
00:58:18They might be going that way with Payton.
00:58:20Here comes Payton.
00:58:21He's going to throw, if he can.
00:58:25He's going to play.
00:58:29Moorhead protesting that he was interfered with,
00:58:32but it brings up fourth down.
00:58:33And the field goal kicker, Kevin Butler,
00:58:35comes up as the Bears on three tries.
00:58:38First and goal of the five can't get it in.
00:58:40You'll see Payton come in motion.
00:58:42And all the way, he tries to fake the run here,
00:58:45but I think New England's seen him throw the ball so often.
00:58:48In desperation, he throws it to Moorhead.
00:58:50That would have been an outstanding catch.
00:58:52It was in the end zone.
00:58:56And it's now going to be a 20-yard attempt
00:58:58for Kevin Butler, an All-America place kicker,
00:59:02at Georgia.
00:59:12Nails it.
00:59:1337 seconds to play in the first half,
00:59:16and the Bears extend their lead to 10-0.
00:59:23So the big play in that drive was the one
00:59:25that was very nearly a Patriot interception,
00:59:27but it got through the hands of the defender,
00:59:29and Reitman, the tight end, came down with it.
00:59:31They give the Chicago Bears a first and goal
00:59:34of the Patriot five, but they couldn't get it in.
00:59:37NFL 85, coming up at halftime,
00:59:39a review of what's transpired in this second Sunday of play.
00:59:43Chicago Bears, who won their first championship
00:59:45of any kind in 21 years, a season ago.
00:59:48They took the NFC Central,
00:59:50then went to the playoffs and beat Washington
00:59:52before finally losing to eventual Super Bowl champion San Francisco.
00:59:56The Bears have rejuvenated the football following in Chicago,
00:59:59one of the hallmark franchises in the league.
01:00:02Chicago Bear football now, again,
01:00:04an item of optimism here.
01:00:07Saw Mike Ditka standing on the sideline.
01:00:09A lot of people here in Chicago wondered
01:00:11what kind of head coach Dick...
01:00:13Excuse me, I'm thinking of Dick,
01:00:14but because Mike Ditka would be,
01:00:16now given credit for turning around this franchise,
01:00:19doing an excellent job from top to bottom,
01:00:21not only in player selection and coaching,
01:00:23but in just steadying the entire franchise
01:00:27since Papa Bear left.
01:00:29How about that drive?
01:00:3013th place, 68 yards, 6 minutes and 39 seconds,
01:00:34and time-wise, this first half has been
01:00:36totally dominated by the Chicago Bears.
01:00:39Ditka was an all-pro player for that last
01:00:41NFL championship team for the Bears.
01:00:44Back in 63, five times an all-pro player.
01:00:47He's got over 420 passes as a player
01:00:50with Chicago and Philadelphia and Dallas.
01:00:54High kick downfield, and here comes Starring.
01:00:58Steppen Starring's across the 20,
01:00:59and he's out to the 22,
01:01:01so the Patriots get the ball,
01:01:02but with little time to move it.
01:01:0332 seconds on the first half clock
01:01:05as Coach Barry counsels his quarterback,
01:01:08Tony Eason.
01:01:10He's only been sacked once.
01:01:11Singletary got him the one time.
01:01:13And the only yardage they've really been able to gain
01:01:15in this first half has been passing.
01:01:16That's the weakness of this Chicago Bears defense.
01:01:19Most coaches will tell you that if you face
01:01:21a blitzing team, they're trying to disguise
01:01:24a weakness somewhere.
01:01:25That weakness is the defensive backs
01:01:26of the Chicago Bears,
01:01:28and it's been well-exploited by New England.
01:01:33Bears in command at 10-0.
01:01:35The Patriots have played sound defense.
01:01:38They've forced two Chicago turnovers,
01:01:40but the Patriots unable to move with consistency.
01:01:42Go to the run.
01:01:43James goes over and doesn't get much
01:01:45as he's run down very quickly.
01:01:47Coming over to make the stop at him
01:01:49was William Perry, who at 320 pounds can run.
01:01:53320 pounds.
01:01:54That's got to be a misprint.
01:01:56There is a flag on the play.
01:02:00Face mask against Chicago,
01:02:02and William Perry made the tackle.
01:02:04Can we make that assumption?
01:02:06The thing that surprises a lot of people
01:02:08about William Perry...
01:02:09Face mask, 72 defense.
01:02:13Far stand.
01:02:14That is William Perry.
01:02:15Things that surprise a lot of people,
01:02:16just how quick he is for his size.
01:02:18Sheds a blocker.
01:02:20Gets out there, and James says,
01:02:21Oh, thank God.
01:02:23John Hancock Tower is about to tackle.
01:02:26Ken Bell, the Sary the Bears
01:02:28director of information, said
01:02:30when Perry came to town,
01:02:31everybody talked about how they're going
01:02:32to get his weight down,
01:02:33but he said the first thing we did
01:02:34was took him over to a rib house
01:02:35and had the TV crew get him eating
01:02:37free slaps and ribs.
01:02:39The tough start.
01:02:40We're telling this guy to lose weight.
01:02:41Then we want to see how much he can eat.
01:02:42Yeah.
01:02:45Eason dropping.
01:02:46He's got a problem and runs away from it.
01:02:48Throws on the run.
01:02:49He's got a man.
01:02:50Williams is open.
01:02:51He's out to the 49-yard line.
01:02:53Beautifully done.
01:02:54Derwin Williams open,
01:02:55and Eason, with a great arm,
01:02:57gets the ball right to him
01:02:58with 16 seconds left.
01:03:00The Patriots call a timeout.
01:03:0221-yard gain.
01:03:03Fencik on the tackle.
01:03:05Eason does one thing very well.
01:03:06He's got that good presence
01:03:07that a lot of quarterbacks have.
01:03:09He can feel the pressure
01:03:10before it actually gets there.
01:03:12He throws the ball,
01:03:13and Williams running a good pattern.
01:03:15A gain of 21.
01:03:17Good tackle by Fencik.
01:03:1821 yards.
01:03:19On the field.
01:03:26Let's watch the pass rush
01:03:27of William Perry.
01:03:29Number 72 with at least 320 pounds.
01:03:33Pete Brock.
01:03:34The guy draws a crowd.
01:03:35Yeah, he's being double teamed
01:03:36and following the plan.
01:03:38I'll tell you something.
01:03:39One of the most amazing things
01:03:40I've heard, Bob, about Perry.
01:03:42Bill Parcells, the coach of the Giants,
01:03:44was asked about William Perry
01:03:46when Buddy Ryan had said
01:03:47he was a draft mistake.
01:03:49And Parcells, the Giants coach,
01:03:50said, if he keeps his weight down,
01:03:52I think he can be the greatest
01:03:53defensive lineman of all time.
01:03:55And they said, now, wait a minute.
01:03:56You're saying all time?
01:03:57He said, of all time.
01:03:59That's how much ability I think he has.
01:04:00Well, but the only problem is, Don,
01:04:02if at 21 he fights a weight problem,
01:04:05what will he have to do at 28?
01:04:07Fight a weight problem?
01:04:08I mean, eventually it gets so much
01:04:10that you just can't handle it anymore.
01:04:12I tell you, he's a great kid, too.
01:04:13He's got a personality that lights up a stadium.
01:04:17He's going to be a popular guy here in Chicago.
01:04:19Maybe not with other offenses.
01:04:22First down and 10.
01:04:2612 seconds left.
01:04:28A second down arises for the Patriots.
01:04:31Wilbur Marshall on the coverage.
01:04:33Bears came with the all-out rush there.
01:04:35I think this is the first time
01:04:36the Patriots have been across midfield.
01:04:37They're just by the nose of the ball across it.
01:04:40Well, they have seven rushes for six yards.
01:04:45This first half...
01:04:46They won't get it done.
01:04:47No, this first half has been totally dominated
01:04:49by the Chicago Bears.
01:04:50We first saw Perry at the Orange Bowl,
01:04:52and they were saying this guy can dunk a basketball.
01:04:54He weighed 340 at the time.
01:04:56There wasn't a basketball around,
01:04:57but he took a football and with one step
01:04:59went up over the crossbar and slammed it down.
01:05:02That's 10 feet up.
01:05:06Eason sacked for a second time.
01:05:09That was single carry coming on the blitz.
01:05:13His second sack.
01:05:15Last week, the Bears got two sacks
01:05:17and with their 72 sacks in the 1984 season,
01:05:22that averages about four and a half sacks a ballgame,
01:05:25so they've got some making up to do.
01:05:27Patriots again take a timeout.
01:05:29Of course, when you're sacked,
01:05:30the clock stops in the last two minutes,
01:05:32and then when everything is set,
01:05:33the quarterback is up,
01:05:34and everything is coming out of the right spot,
01:05:36and then they start the clock again.
01:05:39Single carry with two sacks today.
01:05:42Last week, Richard Dent had two sacks against Tampa Bay.
01:05:45This telecast is presented by authority
01:05:46of the National Football League.
01:05:48It is intended for the private use of our audience.
01:05:50Any rebroadcast or other use of this telecast
01:05:52without the express written consent of the Chicago Bears
01:05:54and the National Football League is prohibited.
01:05:57Seven seconds to play in the first half.
01:05:59Don Crickey with Bob Crumpy with the Bears in the lead,
01:06:02and nothing on their home field,
01:06:03opening with two home games.
01:06:05Don, you jinxed the New England Patriots.
01:06:07You said the first time they've been across the 50-yard line,
01:06:10and then Eason gets sacked.
01:06:13Now they're back to their 43 with seven seconds left,
01:06:16so we're going to see a very strong right arm
01:06:18put the ball up into the end zone here.
01:06:21I would certainly think so.
01:06:22They've got the players to get out
01:06:24underneath the pass into the end zone,
01:06:26and Eason certainly has the arm.
01:06:28He is really a hope for a pass interference penalty
01:06:30or just a lucky catch to tip the ball.
01:06:32Third and 18.
01:06:33Tony Eason and Jim McMahon is counted
01:06:35by the only players in collegiate history
01:06:37who've passed for 3,000 yards,
01:06:39more than 3,000 in two seasons as collegiates.
01:06:42There's a track team up there on the top of the screen.
01:06:45And a lot of errors to defend against them.
01:06:47Here's Eason on the last play of the first half,
01:06:49lets her fly.
01:06:54It's like volleyball in a Bears game.
01:06:57Intercepted.
01:06:58Richard Dent has the ball.
01:07:00They say Dent's fast enough to play linebacker,
01:07:02and they hit him downfield and covered that play.
01:07:05So a lot out.
01:07:07Closes the first half for the Patriots.
01:07:10Looked like R.C. Owens back there.
01:07:13A lot of guys got a hand on this.
01:07:15Let's see how many people touch it.
01:07:17One, two, three, four, five.
01:07:22It's an interception for Richard Dent.
01:07:26Doesn't get many of those and appreciates it when he does.
01:07:29Especially 50 yards behind the line of scrimmage.
01:07:33Well, that'll conclude the first half of play.
01:07:36As Ditkin the Bears head to the locker room,
01:07:38we'll be going to NFL 85 for an update
01:07:41on what's transpiring around the National Football League.
01:07:44In a moment, the Chicago Bears scoring first
01:07:46in a 32-yard touchdown pass play.
01:07:48Dennis McKinnon for McMahon on their first possession.
01:07:51Looked like they might be on the way to a route,
01:07:53but then the Patriots held.
01:07:55NFL 85 halftime activities will continue in a moment.
01:07:57We'll be right back after these messages
01:07:59from your local station.
01:08:10Back at Soldier Field at halftime,
01:08:12it's the Bears 10, the New England Patriots nothing.
01:08:15Don Crickey with Bob Trumpy.
01:08:17Last night, Raymond Berry, the coach of the Patriots,
01:08:19told us, he said, you only know how good you are
01:08:21when you go up against the best.
01:08:23He said, we're going to find out a lot about our offense today.
01:08:25And what they found out, unfortunately, Trump,
01:08:27is they can't move the ball.
01:08:28Yeah, you're absolutely right.
01:08:29The total domination by the Chicago Bears
01:08:31in time of possession, 18-59 to 11-01.
01:08:34In total yards, 2-0-6 for Chicago,
01:08:36just 85 for New England.
01:08:38I'll make this point.
01:08:39I don't think the Chicago Bears have played particularly well,
01:08:41offensively or defensively,
01:08:43and they've really shut off the New England Patriots
01:08:45both sides of the line of scrimmage.
01:08:47Well, they've done a lot better than they did a week ago
01:08:49last time against Tampa Bay in the open.
01:08:51It was 28-17 at halftime.
01:08:53The Bears, though, do have a shutout going,
01:08:55and the Bears' defense is back on track
01:08:57because the Patriots put up a lot of points last week
01:08:59against Green Bay.
01:09:00Yeah, Don, this is a bad team to be behind.
01:09:02If you're the New England Patriots and they're fans,
01:09:03you don't want to be behind a team
01:09:05that has this 46 defense
01:09:07that will, on occasion, really go at the quarterback.
01:09:09The Bears only have two sacks in the first half,
01:09:11and I don't think they've gone to that defense a lot
01:09:13because, frankly, I don't think they've needed it.
01:09:16Well, they only have two sacks.
01:09:17That was the Patriots' big concern,
01:09:18that their quarterback, Tony Easton,
01:09:20was going to get swept under.
01:09:21But the pass blocking with an injured offensive line
01:09:24has been admirable when the Bears
01:09:25have only rushed four players,
01:09:26but when they've sent Singleton,
01:09:27well, he's got the Easton twice.
01:09:29Yeah, you're right.
01:09:30He's got the two sacks last week.
01:09:31Of course, Dent got the two sacks.
01:09:33But the New England Patriots,
01:09:34who like to have balance in their offense,
01:09:36and they run the ball very well with James and Collins,
01:09:38have a grand total of seven yards rushing.
01:09:41Time of possession, obviously,
01:09:43is very much on the side of the Chicago Bears,
01:09:45and I'm not sure Raymond Berry can tell his team
01:09:48anything to make it better.
01:09:50Now, just get out there and do your best, guys.
01:09:52We'll be back after this word from your local station.
01:10:04Caligula?
01:10:05Anybody who can get Caligula in
01:10:07at a halftime of a football game
01:10:09deserves some award.
01:10:10I'm not sure anyone else will ever get it
01:10:12after Axe gets it.
01:10:14I like Diogenes.
01:10:15We can apply him to coaching.
01:10:16Diogenes said when the pupil fails,
01:10:18perhaps the teacher should be punished.
01:10:20You're talking over my head now.
01:10:22Let's get back to the stats of the game here.
01:10:24As we documented, look at the numbers there.
01:10:27Two turnovers each.
01:10:28One, that interception by Tony Easton
01:10:31at the end of the half
01:10:32was the first time in Tony Easton's professional career
01:10:34he's thrown two touchdowns,
01:10:36excuse me, two interceptions in one football game.
01:10:38But as I said earlier,
01:10:40I don't think the Chicago Bears
01:10:42would list that half as one of the best halves
01:10:44they've ever played,
01:10:45and yet they lead 10 to nothing,
01:10:47are totally dominating the New England Patriots,
01:10:50and I'm not sure where you go if you're Raymond Berry.
01:10:54I think Easton looks good.
01:10:56I think you've got to throw on the team.
01:10:58The Bears are suspect at the corners.
01:11:01They were beaten badly.
01:11:02They gave up four first-half touchdowns to Tampa Bay.
01:11:04They're showing blitz a lot less.
01:11:06They've been successful with it,
01:11:07with Singletary getting two sacks,
01:11:09but there's no question that Easton is very mobile.
01:11:11He's quick-footed, nimble, with a great arm.
01:11:13I think they can move.
01:11:14You've got to throw.
01:11:15They can't run on this team.
01:11:16They haven't so far been able to run,
01:11:18just seven yards rushing.
01:11:19But the thing about it is,
01:11:21is that the longer you play the Chicago Bears,
01:11:23the more you put your quarterback in jeopardy.
01:11:25This is where the Chicago Bears get on the board first.
01:11:28Good scramble by McMahon.
01:11:29Excellent throw to McKinnon on the move,
01:11:31and that's a 32-yard touchdown
01:11:33after three minutes and three seconds, 69 yards.
01:11:37And then Kevin Butler made a 10-0
01:11:40with this 30-yard field goal,
01:11:43and that was a rather easy drive,
01:11:45and that was a big play.
01:11:46McMahon should not have thrown a pass.
01:11:48Reitman catches it for a big first down,
01:11:50but they could not get it in the end zone.
01:11:52And the Bear defense starts the second half
01:11:55as they'll kick off to the New England Patriots.
01:11:58Big barely Mike Ditka.
01:12:00Locked in now as part of the franchise.
01:12:03He's done a great job for Chicago.
01:12:05Yeah, I heard somebody in Chicago say
01:12:07that you judge the Bears' success in football
01:12:10on whether or not their head coach has broken his hand.
01:12:12Two years ago, they had a losing record, broken hand.
01:12:14Last year, winning record, no broken hand.
01:12:17Right now, the kickoff is carried down
01:12:19to Stephan Starring from 3 yards deep.
01:12:21Here he comes.
01:12:24Deadly markers.
01:12:26Starring is out across the 25-yard line.
01:12:29Ken Taylor ran him out of bounds,
01:12:31and a man, as you see, is down now for Chicago.
01:12:35There's a flag on the flag.
01:12:43So the Patriots send out their offense.
01:12:45First and 10.
01:12:46The signal is going to be against Chicago
01:12:48and offsetting penalties.
01:12:49Got to do it again, then.
01:12:52Underrated player right there.
01:12:54Big Calvin Thomas from Illinois.
01:12:56This Chicago Bear franchise has a lot of...
01:12:59They'll try it again.
01:13:00They've got a lot of good players
01:13:01on the Chicago Bear football team.
01:13:02They really do.
01:13:03Hampton is an excellent player
01:13:04that doesn't get a lot of press.
01:13:06He goes to the Pro Bowl three years in a row.
01:13:08Yeah, but he still doesn't get a lot of press.
01:13:10When you talk about the great defensive lineman
01:13:12in the NFL to his peers,
01:13:14I think everyone recognizes what a great player he is.
01:13:16But if you list, if you had the football fans list
01:13:18the three best players in the NFL,
01:13:20you'd have to go back and look at him.
01:13:22He's a great player.
01:13:23He's a great player.
01:13:24He's a great player.
01:13:25He's a great player.
01:13:26If you had the football fans list
01:13:27the five greatest defensive linemen
01:13:29you can find in the game,
01:13:30Hampton's name would not be in it.
01:13:32Very true.
01:13:35Scoreboard changing around the league.
01:13:37Neil O'Donohue has just kicked a field goal
01:13:39as the cards go up on Cincinnati.
01:13:4117-14, still in the second quarter of play.
