00:00:00It's snowing outside in the Seattle area, but cozy under the roof of the Kingdome, the usual sellout of near 65,000 to see two teams with real playoff ambitions duel this afternoon. Hello, everyone. Dick Enberg with Merlin Olsen. The New England Patriots know now the Jets are going to win. They have a big lead, so they're trying to stay in first place, and the Seattle Seahawks are just one game behind the Denver Broncos who play the San Diego Chargers a bit later, and they're both looking ahead to a late season opportunity.
00:00:29Dick, when you're thinking playoffs, and both these teams are thinking playoffs, you've got to win late in the year. Early in the season, you lose a game, you can make up on it. You can't do that anymore. This game could also play a big role if these teams are fighting for a berth as a wild card later in the season.
00:00:43And in the highly competitive AFC, 14 teams and 10 of the 14 in the American Conference are either in first place or one game out of first. The Patriots will get the ball first. Norm Johnson to kick it off for Seattle.
00:00:57New England with five consecutive wins under Coach Rayberry, and Seattle trying to win their third in a row. A huge kick that's deep.
00:01:08Stephens starring. Well, sit on it in the end zone. Touchback, and out comes the Renaissance Man, as Pete Rozelle alluded to Steve Grogan.
00:01:17Tony Collins and Craig James are the running back. Stanley Morgan, the all-time Patriot receiver, and catches yards and touchdowns. Irving Fryer, a couple of hundred turns for touchdowns.
00:01:29Lynn Dawson is the tight end. The offensive blockers, Brian Holloway and John Hanna, the H-team on that left side.
00:01:36Pro Bowlers, veteran Guy Morris at center. Ron Wheaton and Steve Moore on the right side.
00:01:41Craig James for only two into a sea of blue Seattle jerseys led by Keith Butler. Here is that Seahawk defense. Jacob Green, he has a couple of touchdowns this year.
00:02:02Joe Nash on the nose from Boston College and Jeff Bryant. The linebackers, Bruce Schultz, Fred Young, a fine young player.
00:02:10Keith Butler and Michael Jackson. Terry Taylor and Dave Brown, the veteran at the corners, and Kenny Easley, an all-pro.
00:02:17And John Harris at safety on second and eight as James picking his way to the 25, where it'll be third and five.
00:02:25Butler, along with John Harris, to make the stop.
00:02:29Right away, this Patriot team comes out and starts pounding on that line for the Seahawks.
00:02:35And one of the reasons for that, the Seahawks have been very aggressive. They have 21 sacks in the last three weeks.
00:02:41They want to remind them of how strong that running game that the Patriots can produce on the line of scrimmage is so that they can keep them out of the pass rush.
00:02:50Tony Collins, Craig James split behind Grogan.
00:02:54And Seattle looking past. They're bringing up the rush.
00:02:57And then they drop back. Gave a false look. Grogan just gets it away. Complete to Lynn Dawson. Fumble!
00:03:06Dawson may have been able to scramble back and get it, but I believe with a fumble, the Patriots lost the chance for a first down.
00:03:13Dawson was struggling to get across the 30 in a first down.
00:03:17With the fumble, the ball drops back to the 29.
00:03:19Two of the most physical, defensive players in the NFL on the field today.
00:03:24There's one of them, number 45, Kenny Easley, working on Lynn Dawson.
00:03:28Watch him strip that football.
00:03:30Boy, he just goes after that football, attacks it.
00:03:33Ball bounces away.
00:03:35And in that fumble, they lost first down yardage, Dick.
00:03:38They had the first down, but they lost it with the fumble.
00:03:40So, Rich Camarillo, who did his college kicking right here in Seattle at the University of Washington.
00:03:50Off to a good start, but his average dipping dramatically the last five games.
00:03:54But those were five New England wins.
00:03:57Kenny Easley and Paul Scancy are deep for Seattle.
00:04:01A beautiful, booming kick that'll send Easley all the way back inside his 15.
00:04:05He fumbles and falls on it at the 20.
00:04:10The implications for both teams in their division races.
00:04:16New England currently tied with the Jets and with a 5-0 lead within the division.
00:04:21New England has that advantage.
00:04:23The Jets are going to win.
00:04:24They have a big, big lead over Tampa Bay.
00:04:26Miami apparently will beat Indianapolis.
00:04:28Both teams, Jets and Miami, started slowly.
00:04:30But that in-division record is important.
00:04:32Denver leads by one over Seattle.
00:04:34And it's a real scramble in the West with the Raiders only one game off the lead.
00:04:38All the Western Division teams are playing late games.
00:04:43Seattle and the other four competing in the AFC West.
00:04:47Dave Craig.
00:04:51Kurt Warner for four.
00:04:53Warner, the number seven rusher in the NFL, comes in with a 722 yards.
00:04:59But he's been slowed in the last three weeks with a bad ankle.
00:05:08It'll be second down and six.
00:05:10We'll give you those lineups in just a moment.
00:05:11The Seattle breaks huddle at its 24-yard run.
00:05:18Both Turner and Steve Largent to the right.
00:05:20And that's 89 Byron Walker way out to the near side.
00:05:23Warner, close to a first down, dropped at the 29-yard line by Fred Marion,
00:05:33the AFC Defensive Player of the Week, for his efforts last week against Indianapolis.
00:05:39Craig, the quarterback.
00:05:40Warner, Eric Lane, number 37, starting at fullback.
00:05:43Chuck Knox's team has had real problems at that position with injuries.
00:05:46David Hughes and Dan Dornick both out.
00:05:48Darryl Turner with 10 touchdown passes, tops in the NFL.
00:05:52Steve Largent only three away from an NFL record, 50 catches, eight years.
00:05:57Charlie Young, the tight end.
00:05:58Essink, Baylor, Bush, Pratt, and Kreider, the next Patriot,
00:06:02that tackle the offensive line.
00:06:04Third and one.
00:06:07Warner, three carries in a row, and he has the first down
00:06:11as he just edges across the 30-yard line.
00:06:14Let's go to Bob Costas.
00:06:15Nope, we're going to go to welcome the Pittsburgh and Houston audience.
00:06:22How did that final come out?
00:06:26The Oilers and Cleveland Browns.
00:06:30We welcome you, and there's that final.
00:06:33The Steelers winning 30-7 to maintain at least a share of first place in the Central Division.
00:06:39Cincinnati playing at Los Angeles against the Raiders.
00:06:42The Steelers here were just underway in the Kingdome.
00:06:45Three and a half minutes have been played.
00:06:46The Patriots unable to pick up a first down after receiving the opening kickoff,
00:06:50and Kirk Warner, three consecutive runs, a first down, a total of 11 yards,
00:06:55and hits Seattle at their 31.
00:06:57Four straight carries, and he battles for five before 50.
00:07:08Larry McGrew and Steve Nelson, 57, can make the tackle.
00:07:14Ken Sims, Dennis Owens, and Julius Adams,
00:07:17the old man on that front line for the Patriots.
00:07:20Andre Tippett, boy, greatness really surrounding his play.
00:07:23Steve Nelson, despite the eye injury, and he has a special face mask to protect the eye.
00:07:29Larry McGrew and Don Blackman.
00:07:30Blackman would be a star in most teams, but with Tippett in that linebacking court,
00:07:34tough to find him.
00:07:35Lippitt, Claiborne, James, and Marion, a good back four for New England.
00:07:40Second and five.
00:07:45Warner has another first down.
00:07:48And Kurt Warner, five plays, five rushes by Warner, the former All-America at Penn State.
00:07:55If you want to know why Kurt Warner is regarded by defenses as such a tough back to stop,
00:08:01watch the cuts he makes from the end zone.
00:08:04He sees the opening back inside, runs right out of the grasp of number 50, Larry McGrew,
00:08:09and picks up excellent yardage.
00:08:11This is the quickest I have seen Warner since his knee injury,
00:08:15and he looks to be explosive on the line today.
00:08:20From the 44.
00:08:23Only Warner behind Craig.
00:08:26His first throw, and it goes to Warner.
00:08:31For six yards, a fumble, and the Patriots have recovered.
00:08:35Warner hit at midfield, and the signal was that New England had recovered.
00:08:42One of the officials marked it toward the opposite goal line,
00:08:46but now perhaps another official is going to say the play had been whistled dead.
00:08:50Now they're trying to separate everything down there.
00:08:53We'll give you a chance to watch it.
00:08:54A little swing pattern.
00:08:56They run Warner several times.
00:08:57They're stretching down the field with the receivers.
00:09:00Warner has the ball here, working against those Patriots who are trying to strip the ball as well,
00:09:05and that was Fred Marion who pulled that ball away,
00:09:08and I believe, Dick, that it was a legitimate fumble.
00:09:11It was, and Jerry Markbright has now signaled first down New England.
00:09:17That's one of the things that Raymond Berry locked out on,
00:09:21or locked on as a priority for his defense, was taking the ball away.
00:09:26They were 26th in the league last year.
00:09:28This year, they lead the AFC with 30.
00:09:31Seattle, by the way, is there with 29.
00:09:33So both these teams know how to strip that football loose.
00:09:37We've seen it on the ground twice already with fumbles.
00:09:41The fans are booing here at the kingdom,
00:09:44but the replay certainly confirms the fact that Warner had fumbled.
00:09:48Tony Collins, a couple tough yards.
00:10:02Fred Young, number 50, one of the many Seahawks in on the stop.
00:10:06Jeff Bryant, number 77, working on 76, Brian Holloway.
00:10:12Holloway drove him off the line a good five yards.
00:10:15Jeff wanting to get back into that play, able to pick up a piece of the tackle.
00:10:20But, boy, that's a battle of two bulls on the line of scrimmage.
00:10:23Cleveland has defeated Buffalo to stay in that central division race.
00:10:30Collins.
00:10:33Bulldog down by Kenny Easley at the 43 after a four-yard gain.
00:10:40Drogon has thrown only one pass, completed the tight end Lynn Dawson,
00:10:44but Dawson fumbled on the play,
00:10:46and the ball falling back inside the 30,
00:10:48and denied the Patriots a first down.
00:10:50And they're looking for their initial first down.
00:10:52Kenny Easley said he felt that the key to this game, Dick,
00:10:55was what would happen on first downs.
00:10:58The Seahawks want their nickel package,
00:11:00their extra defensive backs on the field.
00:11:03But if the Patriots are able to run the ball effectively,
00:11:06they can keep that nickel package on the sideline.
00:11:09From the shotgun.
00:11:14The all-out blitz,
00:11:17and Collins may have fumbled.
00:11:20And they have ruled it a fumble.
00:11:24And we'll mark it at that spot,
00:11:25recovered by New England.
00:11:27But the Patriots will have to punt it away.
00:11:32You'll see on the right-hand side of your screen
00:11:35that Randy Edwards, number 60-68,
00:11:38blowing in there.
00:11:39That's a draw play.
00:11:40When you run the blitz,
00:11:41very often because you're jumping into those gaps,
00:11:44you just kill that draw play.
00:11:45That's a case where the defense had the perfect call
00:11:48for the offensive play.
00:11:50Hogg Hanna, number 73,
00:11:51was the man who fell on the football
00:11:53to keep it in New England's possession.
00:11:55Camarillo aiming toward the near corner.
00:11:58No, that one's going to fade
00:11:59and bounce into the end zone.
00:12:02That's not what Camarillo had in mind.
00:12:04So, on the net,
00:12:06the Patriots will get only 23 yards.
00:12:10Steve Largent, as he comes on the field,
00:12:1347 catches.
00:12:15Should he catch three today,
00:12:16he will become the first man in NFL history
00:12:19to catch 50 passes in eight different years.
00:12:24He's currently tied with five men.
00:12:25One of those, Raymond Berry,
00:12:27the New England coach,
00:12:28seven seasons with 50 or more.
00:12:30He undoubtedly will be the first man
00:12:33to catch 600 in a career
00:12:35in less than 12 years,
00:12:36and he's going to do it in 10.
00:12:40And there's more to the Larson story.
00:12:43Warner.
00:12:4630, 40,
00:12:48and Miriam knocks him out of bounds
00:12:49at the 44.
00:12:5044.
00:12:5144.
00:13:0024 yards for Kurt Warner.
00:13:04Kurt Warner, early in this season,
00:13:07has had trouble getting to the hole.
00:13:09He has had trouble exploding,
00:13:11but you saw it at just a little opening there.
00:13:13The good running backs
00:13:15know how to explode
00:13:17from the line of scrimmage.
00:13:18Warner did it there,
00:13:19popped through for a big gain
00:13:20and a first down.
00:13:21He is having an exciting day.
00:13:23Six rushes,
00:13:2447 yards already
00:13:26in this first quarter.
00:13:27Randall Morris will give Warner a breather.
00:13:29Morris, 43.
00:13:30That was the longest run
00:13:31against the New England Patriots all season.
00:13:35Eric Lane.
00:13:37And he stopped
00:13:38after just a yard gain.
00:13:4085,
00:13:41Julius Adams,
00:13:42the 37-year-old gray beard
00:13:44defensive end of the Patriots,
00:13:46made the stop.
00:13:47He said 85,
00:13:48number 85,
00:13:49will end it here in 85,
00:13:52his last season.
00:13:52I talked to Eddie Kayad,
00:13:54his defensive line coach,
00:13:55and Eddie said,
00:13:55you know,
00:13:56this 37-year-old
00:13:57defensive lineman
00:13:58is still one of the quickest
00:13:59off the ball
00:14:00of any of the linemen
00:14:01in the NFL.
00:14:02He said,
00:14:02you know,
00:14:02he can show those guys,
00:14:03and in that first
00:14:04two or three feet,
00:14:05you can make a living.
00:14:06And he is something else
00:14:08in great shape.
00:14:09Still enjoying the game.
00:14:11Second and nine.
00:14:12Four,
00:14:1390.
00:14:16Craig,
00:14:17Don Blackman
00:14:18records the sack
00:14:20his eighth of the season.
00:14:22Let's take a peek
00:14:22at Julius Adams
00:14:23on this particular play.
00:14:25He was driving inside
00:14:26to make room
00:14:27for the blitzing linebacker
00:14:28on the outside.
00:14:29Very quickly,
00:14:30number 55,
00:14:31Don Blackman
00:14:32coming from the outside
00:14:33is the man
00:14:33who makes the sack.
00:14:34But you saw how quickly
00:14:36Julius Adams,
00:14:3685,
00:14:37blew into the inside
00:14:38past number 64,
00:14:40Ron Essick.
00:14:4135th time this year
00:14:43that Dave Craig
00:14:44has been sacked.
00:14:46Adams a part of the play,
00:14:48although Blackman
00:14:49will receive the sack credit.
00:14:51Out of the shotgun,
00:14:52Craig on third down
00:14:54and 15.
00:14:59Good protection.
00:15:01Open is Largent.
00:15:03And Steve Largent
00:15:05has caught a pass
00:15:06in his 118th
00:15:08consecutive game
00:15:09as he moves
00:15:10ever closer
00:15:11to Harold Carmichael's
00:15:12all-time record
00:15:13of 127 in a row.
00:15:15Magic feet.
00:15:17Largent just has
00:15:18that unique ability
00:15:19to break loose.
00:15:20He gets his man
00:15:21turned around right there.
00:15:22Roland James
00:15:23gets it to the outside.
00:15:26That's Claiborne.
00:15:26Raymond Claiborne,
00:15:2726,
00:15:28coming up
00:15:28to shove him
00:15:29out of bounds.
00:15:30And he's short
00:15:30of the first down
00:15:31by about,
00:15:33oh,
00:15:33two yards.
00:15:34They're going to have
00:15:34to kick it away.
00:15:35That's unusual for Largent.
00:15:36He usually knows
00:15:37exactly where
00:15:37the marker is.
00:15:41Dave Penzer's
00:15:42first putt.
00:15:47Short.
00:15:48And bounces out
00:15:50of bounds
00:15:51around the
00:15:5125-yard line.
00:15:55They'll mark it
00:15:56right at the 25.
00:15:58Short kick of 23
00:16:00by Penzer.
00:16:05Five minutes
00:16:06and nine seconds
00:16:06remaining
00:16:07in this first quarter.
00:16:09Craig and the Seahawks
00:16:10no score.
00:16:11They've had some trouble
00:16:11this year, too,
00:16:12and you can see
00:16:13one of the problems
00:16:13that Craig has had.
00:16:15He's gotten off
00:16:15to some bad starts,
00:16:16and in the games
00:16:17they've lost,
00:16:17the four games
00:16:18they've lost,
00:16:19has thrown 11
00:16:20interceptions.
00:16:21But when he is
00:16:21on a streak,
00:16:23he's hard to stop.
00:16:24Nearly perfect.
00:16:24Rogen.
00:16:30Off play action.
00:16:34That's going to be
00:16:34intercepted.
00:16:35John Harris
00:16:36at the 49 of Seattle.
00:16:39His fifth of the year.
00:16:49Both of these
00:16:50football teams
00:16:51have tremendous
00:16:52defenses,
00:16:53and they can take
00:16:54the football away
00:16:55from you.
00:16:56They can win
00:16:57just with defense.
00:16:58Turnovers.
00:16:59The name of the game
00:17:00here in Seattle.
00:17:00They get their
00:17:01first of the day,
00:17:02and Rogen is wondering
00:17:03why he lobbed that
00:17:04one over the head
00:17:05of his receiver.
00:17:06That was not a good path.
00:17:07Well,
00:17:10each team
00:17:11has a turnover
00:17:12at midfield.
00:17:14New England
00:17:14with a fumble recovery.
00:17:16Kurt Warner
00:17:16had the Seattle 49,
00:17:18and now Harris's
00:17:19interception
00:17:19puts the Seahawks
00:17:21in business
00:17:21just on their
00:17:23side of the 50.
00:17:24Craig looking long
00:17:32for Turner.
00:17:35Intercepted by
00:17:36Fred Merriam.
00:17:39The 10,
00:17:4120,
00:17:4230,
00:17:44and Fred Merriam
00:17:46back to the
00:17:4732-yard line
00:17:48with his
00:17:49fifth interception
00:17:50of the year,
00:17:51and we've got
00:17:51some extra
00:17:52pushing and shoving.
00:17:56Well,
00:17:56turnabout is fair play.
00:17:58The Seahawks
00:17:59took it away
00:18:00from Brogan,
00:18:01and the New England
00:18:02Patriots come right
00:18:03back and steal
00:18:04the ball from Craig.
00:18:05Craig trying to get
00:18:06to his speed receiver,
00:18:08the deep man.
00:18:08They want to stretch
00:18:09the defense.
00:18:10The ball is
00:18:10underthrown,
00:18:12and Merriam timed
00:18:13it beautifully,
00:18:14went up over the top.
00:18:15Claiborne would have
00:18:16knocked it away
00:18:17had it been
00:18:17even thrown further,
00:18:19and then it's
00:18:19a fun runback.
00:18:20Looks like a running
00:18:21back here.
00:18:23Marion has had
00:18:24a sensational year,
00:18:25former Miami
00:18:26of Florida star,
00:18:26one of three
00:18:27former Hurricanes,
00:18:29along with
00:18:29Wester Williams
00:18:31and Ron Lippitt
00:18:33on the
00:18:35New England club.
00:18:37We'd like to
00:18:38welcome those of you
00:18:39who have been
00:18:40watching the Miami
00:18:41Dolphins and
00:18:42Indianapolis Colts.
00:18:43We're here at the
00:18:44Kingdome,
00:18:44Dick Henberg and
00:18:45Merlin Olsen,
00:18:45the final of the
00:18:46Dolphins,
00:18:46staying within a game
00:18:48for the Jets,
00:18:48and New England
00:18:49hoping that
00:18:49with a win that
00:18:51they can stay a game
00:18:51ahead of Miami.
00:18:53But Miami had to rally
00:18:54as did the Jets today
00:18:55from early deficits.
00:19:02Fred Marion has just
00:19:03intercepted
00:19:04a Dave Craig pass
00:19:06for New England,
00:19:07returning it
00:19:08as he gathered his
00:19:09momentum from the goal line
00:19:11out to the 32.
00:19:13And Tony Collins
00:19:14struggles for a couple.
00:19:15Thus far,
00:19:16New England has not
00:19:17been able to establish
00:19:18a running game.
00:19:20All the scores
00:19:21for you,
00:19:21early action.
00:19:22Bears embarrassing
00:19:23the Cowboys in Dallas,
00:19:2544 to nothing.
00:19:2634 to 20,
00:19:27Miami,
00:19:28staying within a game
00:19:29of the lead.
00:19:29The Jets,
00:19:3055-28,
00:19:31at over 40 points
00:19:32at halftime
00:19:33after they fell behind
00:19:34early.
00:19:34Pittsburgh,
00:19:35big Houston,
00:19:3530 to 7.
00:19:3724-14,
00:19:39the Eagles are a winner
00:19:39against the Cardinals.
00:19:42Here,
00:19:42no score,
00:19:43four minutes remaining
00:19:44in the first quarter.
00:19:46Second down
00:19:47and eight,
00:19:47Collins trying
00:19:49to get outside.
00:19:50John Harris
00:19:51drops him
00:19:52at the 35.
00:19:56Now to NFL 85,
00:19:58Ahmad Rashad.
00:20:01All right,
00:20:01Dick.
00:20:04Oh,
00:20:05the Chargers
00:20:05starting today
00:20:06at five and five,
00:20:07trying to work
00:20:08their way
00:20:08into the thick
00:20:09of this AFC West.
00:20:10Gary Anderson.
00:20:12Boy,
00:20:12very quickly,
00:20:13that former
00:20:15Arkansas All-American
00:20:16showing that he's
00:20:17going to be one
00:20:17of the top backs
00:20:18in this league.
00:20:20Grogan,
00:20:21scrambling,
00:20:23and he does not,
00:20:24and now he throws
00:20:25wide open.
00:20:25Irving Fryer
00:20:26all the way
00:20:27to the 37-yard line
00:20:28of Seattle
00:20:29in a first down.
00:20:31What a great play
00:20:33by Grogan
00:20:33as he battled
00:20:34for extra time,
00:20:36but Irving Fryer
00:20:37is working
00:20:38one-on-one
00:20:38on Kenny Easley,
00:20:39number 45.
00:20:40You'll see him
00:20:41break to the inside.
00:20:42Easley's the man
00:20:43that's got to
00:20:43protect him.
00:20:44Fryer gets a little
00:20:45push and then
00:20:45gets away,
00:20:46seeing the quarterback
00:20:46in trouble.
00:20:47He's all alone,
00:20:48and Grogan,
00:20:49I think Grogan
00:20:50made it,
00:20:50everyone think
00:20:51he was going
00:20:51to run that football.
00:20:52That quickly stopped
00:20:53and dropped it
00:20:53off to Fryer.
00:20:54Smart play.
00:20:55The old Grogan
00:20:56would have run,
00:20:57but this is a new
00:20:59quarterback,
00:20:59the veteran
00:21:00from Kansas State,
00:21:02who admits
00:21:02that maturity
00:21:03has really worked
00:21:04to his favor,
00:21:05that he's much more
00:21:06sage in his decisions.
00:21:09Broke,
00:21:09Craig James,
00:21:10Jesse,
00:21:11Craig James,
00:21:11for a yard.
00:21:13Kenny Easley
00:21:14right there
00:21:14to greet him.
00:21:15The Seattle Seahawks
00:21:16defense is very
00:21:17aggressive at the ball
00:21:18at the line of scrimmage,
00:21:20easily on the blitz
00:21:21on this play,
00:21:21all the way
00:21:22from the backside
00:21:23to get a piece
00:21:24of that tackle
00:21:24on Craig James.
00:21:26One of the things
00:21:27you'll see these
00:21:28Seahawks defenders
00:21:29doing today,
00:21:30you'll see a lot
00:21:30of movement
00:21:31on the line of scrimmage.
00:21:32They know Grogan
00:21:33is calling his own plays
00:21:34and calling his own audibles.
00:21:35They want to give him
00:21:36a lot of different looks.
00:21:38Give him one look,
00:21:39and just before the snap,
00:21:40they'll shift
00:21:40into the real defense.
00:21:41Scrogan up top
00:21:42for Friar.
00:21:44Oh,
00:21:45Friar had position
00:21:47on Terry Taylor,
00:21:48but couldn't bring it in.
00:21:50I talked to Tom Catlin
00:21:52about his defense,
00:21:53and he said,
00:21:54we know they're going
00:21:55to work on number 20,
00:21:56Terry Taylor,
00:21:56and when we've got
00:21:57Keith Simpson in the game,
00:21:58they'll go after him.
00:21:59These are young players,
00:22:00and they have a tendency
00:22:01to make some mistakes.
00:22:03Friar working one-on-one
00:22:05here on Taylor.
00:22:06Taylor is out in front of him,
00:22:07but Friar backs across
00:22:09his heels here
00:22:10and makes what looked
00:22:11to be an excellent attempt
00:22:12at the ball.
00:22:13Couldn't hang on to it,
00:22:14but that's smart football.
00:22:16Had poor position,
00:22:17just used his jumping ability
00:22:18to get the first shot
00:22:19at the football.
00:22:20Third down,
00:22:21Stephens starring
00:22:34and a first down
00:22:35at the 20-yard line.
00:22:37Starring the former quarterback
00:22:39at McNeese State,
00:22:40up to spear that one only,
00:22:41his sixth catch
00:22:43of the entire season.
00:22:45Here he is in isolation
00:22:46down the sideline
00:22:47very quickly
00:22:48and just breaks
00:22:49to the outside.
00:22:50Once again,
00:22:50working on number 20,
00:22:52Terry Taylor.
00:22:53Starring had to spear
00:22:54that one out of the sky.
00:22:56They really have
00:22:57some great athletes
00:22:58on this New England team,
00:22:59both on offense
00:23:00and on defense.
00:23:02I think that's something
00:23:03you'll see a great deal
00:23:04of today.
00:23:04Raw athletic talent.
00:23:08Deepest drive
00:23:09by either team
00:23:09in this initial quarter.
00:23:11Less than two minutes
00:23:12remaining.
00:23:18They ran away
00:23:19away from the strong side
00:23:20to James,
00:23:21but only for a couple.
00:23:23James,
00:23:23who started today
00:23:24with 695 yards rushing.
00:23:27He was number eight
00:23:28in the league
00:23:28behind Curt Warner.
00:23:29Atlanta
00:23:30has upset the Rams.
00:23:31The Rams off to an 8-0 start
00:23:33have now lost
00:23:34three in a row
00:23:35in Cleveland.
00:23:35Rallies to beat the Bills
00:23:3617-7.
00:23:38Green Bay,
00:23:39big over New Orleans.
00:23:40Trebles continue
00:23:41for Bum Phillips' team.
00:23:43San Diego
00:23:43with the opening
00:23:44kickoff return
00:23:45by Gary Anderson.
00:23:4698 yards to lead
00:23:47at Denver 7-0.
00:23:48Kansas City
00:23:48and the 49ers
00:23:50tied at 3 at Candlestick.
00:23:52The Raiders
00:23:52take the early lead
00:23:53against Boomer Esiason
00:23:54and the Bengals
00:23:55down in Los Angeles
00:23:56and Detroit
00:23:57jumps out
00:23:57to a two-touchdown lead
00:23:58against Minnesota
00:23:59in the first quarter.
00:24:01You're up to date.
00:24:01A draw play to James.
00:24:05A tough runner inside
00:24:07and he's inside the 10.
00:24:09It'll be very close
00:24:10to a first down.
00:24:11James are those happy feet.
00:24:14He has an unusual
00:24:15running style.
00:24:16Has a hesitation
00:24:17kind of style in there
00:24:18but really does a great job
00:24:19of finding the opening.
00:24:21On this play
00:24:22they caught the Seahawks
00:24:23in an all-out attempt
00:24:25to rush the passer.
00:24:26They crossed him up.
00:24:27Second of the night
00:24:28they ran the football.
00:24:29And of course
00:24:30James was into the secondary
00:24:31before anyone had a chance
00:24:33to touch him.
00:24:33They're going to measure
00:24:34for the first down.
00:24:35So it'll either be
00:24:36first and goal
00:24:36or third and inches.
00:24:38New England
00:24:39trying to do something
00:24:40that they have not been
00:24:41very successful at
00:24:42this year.
00:24:43That is scoring
00:24:43in the first quarter.
00:24:45It has been a troublesome
00:24:46spot for Raymond Berry's team
00:24:49even in victory.
00:24:50He says sooner or later
00:24:50that's going to bite us
00:24:51if we can't put the ball
00:24:52into the end zone
00:24:53in that first period.
00:24:55He said we're going to find
00:24:57a game plan
00:24:57for the first quarter eventually.
00:24:59He said I haven't found it
00:25:00because I don't know
00:25:00what it is.
00:25:01Well if they can get
00:25:02this one in
00:25:03they certainly can get off
00:25:04on the right foot here.
00:25:05It's a long drought
00:25:07in the first quarter
00:25:07but they have a chance
00:25:08with the clock ticking
00:25:1047, 46 seconds remaining.
00:25:13First period.
00:25:14Third and inches.
00:25:17Fighting the noise
00:25:19of the kingdom.
00:25:19Grogan.
00:25:26Grogan vaulting forward
00:25:28forward for the first down.
00:25:29Right over the back of center
00:25:32Guy Morris.
00:25:34It's first and goal
00:25:35and that may well be
00:25:36the last play of the quarter.
00:25:38You notice that there was
00:25:38no hesitation on Grogan's part.
00:25:40Even with all that noise
00:25:41he's going to run the play.
00:25:43I asked him will that bother you?
00:25:45He said sure it'll bother us.
00:25:46But he said we're not going to
00:25:47let the crowd dictate
00:25:48if we're going to run a play or not.
00:25:50Even if we have to go
00:25:51without a snap count
00:25:52and they're prepared to do it today.
00:25:54Watching his lips
00:25:55I don't think he called
00:25:56when he just waited
00:25:56and when the snap came
00:25:57he just went over the top
00:25:58of his center.
00:25:59Three all.
00:26:00Cincinnati has kicked
00:26:00a field goal in Los Angeles
00:26:02and the final seconds
00:26:04being erased on the Giants
00:26:05scoreboard here in Seattle
00:26:07and that's it.
00:26:07The first period is history.
00:26:09New England and Seattle
00:26:11battling for a first place spot.
00:26:13A look at the New England
00:26:15scoring story under Grogan.
00:26:18Three points and shut out today.
00:26:2126 in the second,
00:26:2220 in the third.
00:26:23But that fourth quarter
00:26:24he's been brilliant.
00:26:26Almost flawless play
00:26:27in that final period.
00:26:29That's so unlike
00:26:30the old Steve Grogan.
00:26:31It was said at one time
00:26:33if Grogan gets a hot start
00:26:34look out.
00:26:35If he gets off badly
00:26:36he gets himself down.
00:26:38He gets down on himself
00:26:39and he'll start to make the mistakes.
00:26:41Well he has certainly matured.
00:26:42I think sitting out
00:26:43those 18 games
00:26:44and watching and saying
00:26:45now what would I have done
00:26:46if I'd had a chance
00:26:47to be in there
00:26:48really helped him.
00:26:50First and goal
00:26:51as we open the second quarter.
00:26:52First scoreless game
00:26:53here in Seattle.
00:26:58Irving Friar
00:26:59untouched
00:27:00and New England lead
00:27:016-0.
00:27:03Beautiful block
00:27:04by Big John Hanna.
00:27:05And what the Patriots
00:27:06are doing here
00:27:07is taking advantage
00:27:08of one of the strengths
00:27:09of this Seattle defense.
00:27:11They pursue so quickly.
00:27:13They simply show them
00:27:14a little movement
00:27:15out to the right.
00:27:16Reverse the ball
00:27:17back to Friar.
00:27:17That's his 7th run
00:27:19on a reverse this year.
00:27:20A little fake inside
00:27:21to the two backs.
00:27:22James going in
00:27:23and here comes Friar.
00:27:24Now watch 73.
00:27:26The block by Hanna.
00:27:27Right there.
00:27:28Knocked Jacob Green
00:27:30off on the play
00:27:31and into the end zone
00:27:32untouched.
00:27:33Goes Friar.
00:27:34Tony Franklin
00:27:35to try the point after.
00:27:37He has not missed
00:27:37as a Patriot
00:27:38and he's right down
00:27:39the middle with that one.
00:27:40Irving Friar's
00:27:417th touchdown
00:27:42of the year
00:27:43gives New England
00:27:44in the lead.
00:27:46Seattle, Washington
00:27:46where it's cold
00:27:48and rainy
00:27:48and snowing
00:27:49in parts of
00:27:50the metropolitan area
00:27:51today.
00:27:52Glad we are indoors.
00:27:53Rarely do we
00:27:54ever utter those words.
00:27:57Tony Franklin's kick
00:27:58is very short
00:27:59toward the sidelines
00:28:00and will go
00:28:01out of bounds
00:28:03and with it
00:28:04a five-yard penalty
00:28:05and that gives us
00:28:06a chance to go
00:28:07to Ahmad Rashad.
00:28:10All right, Dickon.
00:28:12Dick Watson
00:28:12for a four-yard touchdown.
00:28:13The extra point
00:28:14is good.
00:28:15In the first quarter
00:28:16they're all tied
00:28:16at 7-7.
00:28:20Ahmad Rashad.
00:28:21He learned that
00:28:21from Fran Tarkington.
00:28:22Nifty.
00:28:25Does he use
00:28:25that Tarkington roll
00:28:26to turn his back
00:28:27on you every now
00:28:28and again?
00:28:29This New England team
00:28:30has had problems
00:28:31on the kickoffs, Dick.
00:28:32Tony Franklin
00:28:33has not been able
00:28:34to kick the ball
00:28:35consistently deep
00:28:36on the kickoffs.
00:28:37They had an operation.
00:28:38He had an operation
00:28:39on his plant foot
00:28:40during the offseason
00:28:41as plant leg.
00:28:42They felt that
00:28:42that would give him
00:28:43more power.
00:28:43It simply hasn't happened.
00:28:45They're trying to kick
00:28:46to positions on the field
00:28:47but boy, I'll tell you
00:28:48when you can't get
00:28:49that ball deep
00:28:50when you give
00:28:50a receiving team
00:28:52a return team
00:28:52a chance to start up field
00:28:54you give
00:28:55the opposing offense
00:28:56a big boost.
00:28:58Paul Scancy
00:28:59will edge up
00:29:00to about the
00:29:01five-yard line
00:29:02and Seattle
00:29:04should have a good shot
00:29:05at a decent return here.
00:29:06The kick is driven
00:29:07but low
00:29:08taken by Randall Morris
00:29:10at the 20.
00:29:1330
00:29:13could go all the way
00:29:15now.
00:29:16Morris
00:29:16out of bounds
00:29:19at the
00:29:1936-yard line
00:29:21of New England
00:29:22and they love it
00:29:23in Seattle.
00:29:23That's what you were
00:29:32talking about
00:29:33Merlin.
00:29:33It's a low
00:29:34line drive kick.
00:29:36It's impossible
00:29:37to get down there
00:29:38and cover it.
00:29:38You've got to get
00:29:39the hang time.
00:29:40Scancy up to block
00:29:41but Morris
00:29:43doesn't need much
00:29:44and Tony Franklin
00:29:45really makes a saving play
00:29:46here.
00:29:47Throws his body
00:29:47in there
00:29:48and if Randall Morris
00:29:49had jumped
00:29:50to the inside
00:29:51instead of the outside
00:29:52he'd still be running.
00:29:5458 yards
00:29:55on the return
00:29:56the longest
00:29:56against the Patriots
00:29:57this year.
00:29:59Movement on the right
00:30:00side
00:30:00of the line
00:30:01for Seattle.
00:30:03That was
00:30:03Dan Ross
00:30:05the veteran
00:30:05tight end.
00:30:08Rusty Tillman
00:30:09the man who
00:30:10coaches these
00:30:11special teams.
00:30:11Full start
00:30:12number 78
00:30:14offense
00:30:15first down.
00:30:16Ryder and Ross
00:30:17both moving
00:30:17and Ryder the tackle
00:30:18picks up
00:30:19the penalty.
00:30:23There's Chick Harris
00:30:24on the sideline.
00:30:25He'll be signaling
00:30:25the plays
00:30:26into Dave Craig.
00:30:28Chuck Knox
00:30:28standing there
00:30:29to have his input.
00:30:31Ray Prohaska
00:30:32is the
00:30:32offensive coordinator.
00:30:33Rod Rust
00:30:34will signal in
00:30:35the defense
00:30:35for the Patriots.
00:30:36Those men
00:30:36matching wits
00:30:38on the two sidelines.
00:30:39The reason why
00:30:39you didn't see
00:30:40Chick Harris
00:30:40signaling in there
00:30:41is they're using
00:30:42the same play
00:30:42as was called
00:30:43before the penalty.
00:30:45It's Kurt Warner.
00:30:46Big hole.
00:30:4730-25
00:30:49the first down
00:30:50at the 20.
00:30:59Big gains
00:31:00from the running
00:31:01game of the
00:31:02Seattle Seahawks
00:31:03almost nonexistent
00:31:04during 1985.
00:31:06Well, here
00:31:07in a passing
00:31:08situation
00:31:09Warner gets
00:31:11downfield
00:31:12gets very close
00:31:13in fact
00:31:14picks up
00:31:14at the first down.
00:31:16Roland James
00:31:17made the tackle
00:31:17after a 20-yard
00:31:18game.
00:31:19That's 67 yards.
00:31:20Steve Largent
00:31:21wide receiver.
00:31:23He also
00:31:23just enough
00:31:25of a push
00:31:26on Raymond
00:31:26Claiborne
00:31:27to help
00:31:27his runner
00:31:28get a couple
00:31:28more.
00:31:29First down
00:31:29at the Patriots
00:31:3020.
00:31:31Warner again.
00:31:33All down
00:31:33for a yard loss
00:31:35as Kenneth Sims
00:31:36with a
00:31:37long arm
00:31:38of the Texas
00:31:39law there
00:31:39to drag
00:31:40him down
00:31:40from behind.
00:31:41Very physical
00:31:42player.
00:31:42Had some
00:31:43injury problems
00:31:44and I think
00:31:44some attitude
00:31:45problems
00:31:45when he first
00:31:46came into the
00:31:46league.
00:31:47They banged
00:31:48his head
00:31:49a few times
00:31:49gave him
00:31:50a chance
00:31:50to finally
00:31:51grow into
00:31:51the role
00:31:52as number
00:31:53one draft
00:31:53pick
00:31:54and hero
00:31:54on that
00:31:55defensive line
00:31:56and he has
00:31:57responded
00:31:57admirably
00:31:58in this
00:31:58season.
00:32:01Second down.
00:32:05Close to
00:32:0511.
00:32:14Warner has
00:32:15been the
00:32:15workman
00:32:16and pays
00:32:16the price
00:32:17as he gets
00:32:18just to
00:32:18the 19-yard
00:32:19line.
00:32:20Larry McGrew
00:32:21from Southern

00:32:23where he
00:32:24starred in
00:32:24two Rose Bowl
00:32:25wins for
00:32:26the Trojans.
00:32:28They still

00:33:19That
00:33:19is
00:33:20that's
00:33:21an
00:33:21interesting
00:33:22play.
00:33:22How

00:36:19it was a
00:36:20win-free
00:36:20second half
00:36:2162-28
00:36:22do you think
00:36:22Joe Walton
00:36:23would like to
00:36:24bank a few
00:36:24of those
00:36:24points
00:36:25against New
00:36:26England
00:36:27next Sunday
00:36:28is the

00:36:42yes he
00:36:42does
00:36:43at the
00:36:4315
00:36:43Roland
00:36:44James
00:36:44made the

00:36:45a match
00:36:47of great
00:36:48talents
00:36:48one-on-one
00:36:49with Raymond
00:36:50Claiborne
00:36:51and he's
00:36:52as good
00:36:52at this
00:36:53kind of
00:36:53coverage
00:36:53as anybody
00:36:54around
00:36:55gets
00:36:55Largent
00:36:56inside
00:36:56look at
00:36:56that little

00:36:57just to
00:36:57freeze
00:36:58Claiborne
00:36:58for a
00:36:59second
00:36:59and then
00:37:00Largent
00:37:00is out
00:37:01Roland
00:37:01James
00:37:02coming up
00:37:02and you
00:37:02notice
00:37:03using his
00:37:04shoulders
00:37:04instead of
00:37:04his arms
00:37:05he's got
00:37:06a dislocated
00:37:07finger on his
00:37:08right hand
00:37:08he's wearing
00:37:09a casp
00:37:09on it
00:37:10but that's
00:37:10going to
00:37:10make it
00:37:11tough for
00:37:11him to
00:37:11tackle
00:37:12today
00:37:1249
00:37:13catches
00:37:14now on
00:37:15the season
00:37:15for Largent
00:37:16one away
00:37:16from an
00:37:17NFL record
00:37:18Warner
00:37:20a couple
00:37:21yards on
00:37:22first down
00:37:23and almost
00:37:23a late hit
00:37:24by the
00:37:24Patriots
00:37:25Aaron
00:37:26Varis
00:37:26a little
00:37:27late
00:37:27getting in
00:37:28Steve
00:37:28Nelson
00:37:28the primary
00:37:29hitter
00:37:29Varis
00:37:30they like
00:37:31the way
00:37:31he's developed
00:37:32he's from
00:37:32Stanford
00:37:33a second
00:37:33round pick
00:37:34played his
00:37:35high school
00:37:35ball in
00:37:36Ohio
00:37:36and he has
00:37:37five sacks
00:37:37he'll go in
00:37:38for Julius Adams
00:37:39in past
00:37:40situations
00:37:40he was a
00:37:41weight man
00:37:42track man
00:37:42at Stanford
00:37:43and hasn't
00:37:44really bulked up
00:37:45like they want
00:37:46him to
00:37:46he's putting
00:37:47on pounds
00:37:47working hard
00:37:48on the weight
00:37:48program
00:37:48but when he gets
00:37:49another ten pounds
00:37:50on him
00:37:50look out
00:37:51less than
00:37:52eleven minutes
00:37:53remaining in the
00:37:53first half
00:37:54seven nothing
00:37:54New England
00:37:55Craig
00:37:59all day
00:38:00Warner
00:38:01draws a crowd
00:38:03at the
00:38:04fourteen yard
00:38:04line
00:38:05and
00:38:06that'll be
00:38:07a gain of
00:38:08only a yard
00:38:09maybe a loss
00:38:10this Patriot team
00:38:12certainly playing
00:38:13outstanding defense
00:38:14on the year
00:38:15ranked fourth
00:38:16in the NFL
00:38:16and here are the
00:38:17three top tacklers
00:38:18Steve Nelson
00:38:19their leader
00:38:20and in spite of
00:38:21missing that game
00:38:22last week
00:38:22still a top
00:38:23tackler
00:38:23with 86
00:38:24coming into the
00:38:25game
00:38:25Fred Marion
00:38:26of course
00:38:26a tough safety
00:38:27you've seen
00:38:28what he can do
00:38:28in this game
00:38:29already
00:38:29and Larry
00:38:30McGrew
00:38:30Dick
00:38:31I think
00:38:31this linebacking
00:38:32crew for the
00:38:33Patriots
00:38:33is the strongest
00:38:34overall in the
00:38:35NFL
00:38:36that's an
00:38:37interesting comment
00:38:38they've got
00:38:39good depth
00:38:40as well
00:38:40Rembert
00:38:41filled in
00:38:41neatly for
00:38:42Nelson
00:38:43last week
00:38:43third down
00:38:44and nine
00:38:45Craig
00:38:46turned around
00:38:48what a job
00:38:51he did
00:38:51and then throws
00:38:52the ball away
00:38:52in the end zone
00:38:53and Norm Johnson
00:38:55in the field goal
00:38:55unit will be on
00:38:56but Craig
00:38:56saved the sack
00:38:57with his
00:38:58nimble footwork
00:39:00well actually
00:39:00with hand work
00:39:01got one hand
00:39:02on the ground
00:39:02which he's allowed
00:39:03to do
00:39:04last week
00:39:05against New Orleans
00:39:06on a couple
00:39:06of occasions
00:39:07he was fighting
00:39:08his way out of
00:39:09traffic
00:39:09and actually
00:39:10tripped and fell
00:39:11and he was very
00:39:11angry at himself
00:39:12so I think
00:39:13that's a chance
00:39:14for him to get
00:39:15back and have
00:39:16a good play
00:39:16in that direction
00:39:17threw it away
00:39:18obviously
00:39:18Norm Johnson
00:39:19will get another
00:39:20chance
00:39:20and gosh
00:39:21you really feel
00:39:22that these Seahawks
00:39:23need to have him
00:39:24back on track
00:39:25here in the
00:39:26late part of the
00:39:27season
00:39:27a 32 yard attempt
00:39:29he's got it
00:39:31so two trips
00:39:36deep into New England
00:39:37territory for Seattle
00:39:38but only three points
00:39:40for Chuck Knopf
00:39:40into three New England
00:39:41they've been watching
00:39:42the sidelines
00:39:43all season long
00:39:43and pointing out
00:39:44those guys
00:39:44with the signals
00:39:45do you ever try
00:39:46to steal
00:39:46any of those
00:39:47not me
00:39:48but I know
00:39:49that Chuck Knox
00:39:49is famous for that
00:39:50other coaches
00:39:51around the league
00:39:52know that he has
00:39:52people watching
00:39:53the signals
00:39:54and there are
00:39:54things you try
00:39:55and find out
00:39:55for example
00:39:56if you can
00:39:56break the signals
00:39:57for a defense
00:39:57you know
00:39:58when they're
00:39:58blitzing
00:39:58very important
00:39:59and for an
00:40:00offense
00:40:00you'd like to
00:40:01know whether
00:40:01they're running
00:40:01or going to
00:40:02pass
00:40:02then you can
00:40:03alter your
00:40:03defenses
00:40:04quickly to
00:40:04that regard
00:40:05well you might
00:40:06see a man
00:40:06high in the sky
00:40:07with the binoculars
00:40:08to see if they
00:40:08can pick up
00:40:09that information
00:40:10and indeed
00:40:11you had a story
00:40:13a personal story
00:40:14involving signals
00:40:15something you picked
00:40:16up as a player
00:40:16with the Rams
00:40:17deep kick
00:40:18by Johnson
00:40:19Stephan starring
00:40:21captain of my
00:40:25all name team
00:40:26in the NFL
00:40:27starring as to
00:40:28the 19 yard line
00:40:29other scores

00:40:38Cincinnati
00:40:39and the Raiders
00:40:40are tied
00:40:41at 3
00:40:41in the second
00:40:42and here
00:40:44it's 7 to 3
00:40:45New England
00:40:45one of the game
00:40:48Detroit leading
00:40:49Minnesota
00:40:5014 to nothing
00:40:51the last report
00:40:51Brogan
00:40:55passing on
00:40:55first down
00:40:56oh what a catch
00:40:59by Irving
00:41:00Fryer
00:41:00falling to the
00:41:02outside
00:41:03and
00:41:03nailing that
00:41:04one for a
00:41:059 yard game
00:41:05Fryer
00:41:06the number
00:41:07one player
00:41:07picked a year
00:41:08ago in the
00:41:08draft out of
00:41:09Nebraska
00:41:09and he is
00:41:10really living
00:41:11up to
00:41:11his star
00:41:13potential
00:41:14this season
00:41:14had injuries
00:41:15last year
00:41:16an exciting
00:41:17rookie
00:41:17even when he
00:41:18first stepped
00:41:18on the field
00:41:19injured his ribs
00:41:20in a preseason
00:41:21game at
00:41:22Washington
00:41:22and that
00:41:23slowed him
00:41:23down
00:41:23when he
00:41:24finally got
00:41:24back
00:41:24then he
00:41:25hurt his
00:41:25shoulder
00:41:25so he
00:41:26is just
00:41:26getting a
00:41:27chance to
00:41:27pay off
00:41:28as a
00:41:28dividend
00:41:28here in
00:41:291985

00:41:45for New England
00:41:46has 15 yards
00:41:47before
00:41:47easily can wrap
00:41:48him up
00:41:49one of the
00:41:50interesting things
00:41:51about Steve
00:41:51Grogan's return
00:41:52to the lineup
00:41:53is that he has
00:41:54had some
00:41:54elbow problems
00:41:55some tendonitis
00:41:56it's only allowed
00:41:58him to practice
00:41:58really and throw
00:41:59the football twice
00:42:00during the week
00:42:00on Thursday
00:42:01and Friday
00:42:01doesn't seem
00:42:02to be bothering
00:42:03his accuracy
00:42:03however
00:42:04Grogan
00:42:07one time
00:42:09better known
00:42:10for his
00:42:10scrambling
00:42:11talent
00:42:12than his
00:42:13accuracy
00:42:14of arm
00:42:15Craig James
00:42:16into the clear
00:42:17and he's all
00:42:18the way
00:42:18to the
00:42:18Seattle
00:42:1939-yard line
00:42:20James ripping
00:42:21off a big
00:42:22gain
00:42:23of 17
00:42:24yards
00:42:25watch the
00:42:26hesitation
00:42:27by James
00:42:27first a little
00:42:28step to the
00:42:29outside
00:42:29a counterstep
00:42:30now watch
00:42:30he just kind
00:42:31of hovered
00:42:31there for a
00:42:32second
00:42:32and then
00:42:32waited till
00:42:33that hole
00:42:33opened
00:42:33giving his
00:42:35blockers a
00:42:35chance to
00:42:36set it up
00:42:36when it was
00:42:37there he
00:42:38exploded
00:42:38through it
00:42:39big gain
00:42:40that's the
00:42:40kind of play
00:42:41that these
00:42:41Patriots would
00:42:42like to get
00:42:43going here
00:42:44they would
00:42:44like to start
00:42:44dominating
00:42:45on the line
00:42:46of scrimmage
00:42:46they have a
00:42:47big weight
00:42:47advantage in that
00:42:48offensive line
00:42:49they're starting
00:42:49to use it
00:42:50first down
00:42:51at the 38

00:43:00from the
00:43:00University of

00:43:01well let's
00:43:02go to the
00:43:02sidelines
00:43:03see if we
00:43:03can pick up
00:43:03some of those
00:43:04signals
00:43:04well you won't
00:43:05have many
00:43:06signals coming
00:43:06in when
00:43:07Grogan's on
00:43:07the field
00:43:08of course
00:43:08Dick
00:43:08he's calling
00:43:09his own
00:43:09plays
00:43:10the last
00:43:10time he
00:43:10did that
00:43:11back in
00:43:1279 and
00:43:1280
00:43:13under Ron
00:43:13Earhart
00:43:14but as he's
00:43:15calling his
00:43:15plays
00:43:15here are the
00:43:16signals coming
00:43:17in from
00:43:17Tom Catlin
00:43:18Catlin of course
00:43:19the defensive
00:43:19coordinator for
00:43:20the Seahawks
00:43:21been with
00:43:22Chuck Knox

00:43:35and nothing
00:43:36there for
00:43:37Craig James
00:43:38it'll be
00:43:39third and
00:43:40long as we
00:43:41go long
00:43:41distance to
00:43:42Ahmaud
00:43:43all right

00:43:53referred to
00:43:54the refrigerator
00:43:55William

00:43:56called

00:44:01last week
00:44:02for James
00:44:02comes right
00:44:03back today
00:44:04meanwhile
00:44:04in the
00:44:05noise
00:44:05of the
00:44:05kingdom
00:44:06third
00:44:06and long
00:44:07Brogan
00:44:08going for
00:44:09it all
00:44:09an open
00:44:10man
00:44:11Stefan
00:44:12starring
00:44:12had two
00:44:13steps
00:44:14on the
00:44:14Seattle
00:44:14defense
00:44:15and
00:44:15Brogan's
00:44:16arm
00:44:16a little
00:44:17too
00:44:17strong
00:44:17oh he
00:44:18could
00:44:18taste
00:44:19six
00:44:19on that
00:44:20one
00:44:20working
00:44:22on Terry
00:44:22Jackson
00:44:23number
00:44:2324
00:44:24and he
00:44:25broke
00:44:25deep
00:44:25Grogan
00:44:26getting
00:44:26excellent
00:44:27protection
00:44:28on that
00:44:28play
00:44:28and when
00:44:29you can
00:44:29get the
00:44:29running
00:44:30game
00:44:30to go
00:44:30when you
00:44:31can establish
00:44:32some kind
00:44:32of running
00:44:32game
00:44:33you force
00:44:34the defensive
00:44:34lineman to think
00:44:35about the run
00:44:36slows down that
00:44:37first step
00:44:38and usually gives you
00:44:39more time to throw
00:44:40the football
00:44:40out of
00:44:43Tony
00:44:43Franklin's
00:44:44range
00:44:44it would be
00:44:45about a
00:44:4654 yard
00:44:48attempt
00:44:49so Camarillo
00:44:50will try to
00:44:51pin Seattle deep
00:44:52in its own end
00:44:52with a punt
00:44:53that's going to go
00:45:02easily into the end
00:45:03zone
00:45:04Camarillo
00:45:06not angling
00:45:06well at all
00:45:07so the Seahawks
00:45:08will get it
00:45:09at the 20 yard
00:45:09line
00:45:10the net
00:45:11for Camarillo
00:45:12not good
00:45:12honor of
00:45:13Kurt Warner
00:45:13and a big year
00:45:14for him
00:45:15able to return
00:45:15from that
00:45:16serious knee
00:45:16surgery of
00:45:17last season
00:45:18right at the
00:45:20end of this
00:45:20play
00:45:21several bodies
00:45:22stacked up
00:45:22on that
00:45:23right ankle
00:45:23of Kurt Warner
00:45:24that's the
00:45:24one that's
00:45:25been injured
00:45:25the last
00:45:26three weeks
00:45:26and he's
00:45:27trying to
00:45:27shake it
00:45:27off on the
00:45:28sideline
00:45:28now
00:45:28second
00:45:29and
00:45:3015
00:45:30Craig
00:45:35guns it
00:45:36to Byron
00:45:36Walker
00:45:37is it a
00:45:38catch
00:45:38apparently
00:45:38yes
00:45:39at the
00:45:3927 yard
00:45:40line
00:45:41shy of the
00:45:42first down
00:45:4212 yards
00:45:43for Walker
00:45:44Craig
00:45:45throwing that
00:45:46ball low
00:45:47as the
00:45:48defenders
00:45:48were in
00:45:48behind
00:45:49Walker
00:45:49it looked
00:45:50like that
00:45:50ball
00:45:50dangerously
00:45:51close to
00:45:52the ground
00:45:52Walker
00:45:53doing a
00:45:53good job
00:45:54of getting
00:45:54down
00:45:55to scoop
00:45:55it up
00:45:55number 42
00:45:56Ronnie
00:45:56Lippitt there
00:45:57to pounce
00:45:58on him
00:45:59and close
00:45:59it down
00:45:59but it's
00:46:00going to be
00:46:00third
00:46:00and about
00:46:01four yards
00:46:02to go
00:46:02there's
00:46:03what's
00:46:03happened
00:46:03to the
00:46:04Seattle
00:46:04Seahawks
00:46:04they've
00:46:05not had
00:46:05the ball
00:46:05more than
00:46:05six plays
00:46:06on their
00:46:07previous five
00:46:07possessions
00:46:08so they're
00:46:08trying to
00:46:09sustain something
00:46:10for the first
00:46:11time in the
00:46:11half
00:46:12whoops
00:46:14Ken Sims
00:46:15a bit
00:46:18premature
00:46:18and what do you do
00:46:19when you're in here
00:46:20that early
00:46:20you point at someone
00:46:21well
00:46:22and I'll tell you
00:46:23what else you do
00:46:23if you're Dave
00:46:24Craig you get to the
00:46:24ground in a hurry
00:46:25I mean
00:46:26Sims almost got there
00:46:28when the football
00:46:29was there
00:46:29you don't mind him
00:46:30coming to dinner
00:46:31but not quite that
00:46:32fast
00:46:32now watch Craig
00:46:33he looks up
00:46:34and he says
00:46:34hey what is this
00:46:35watch him go to the
00:46:36ground there
00:46:36and Eric Lane
00:46:38over to try and
00:46:39protect him
00:46:39no one apparently
00:46:41moved on the
00:46:42Seattle liners
00:46:43scrimmage
00:46:43so Sims gets a
00:46:44five yard penalty
00:46:45and of course
00:46:47the Seattle Seahawks
00:46:48pick up a first down
00:46:49earned the name
00:46:51nickname game day
00:46:52because he prefers
00:46:53Sundays over those
00:46:55work days
00:46:55in the middle of the
00:46:56week
00:46:56well I don't blame
00:46:57him for that
00:46:58I hated those
00:46:59practices too
00:46:59so first down
00:47:02on the penalty
00:47:02for Seattle
00:47:03trailing seven
00:47:06to three
00:47:07that's it off
00:47:09to Randall Morris
00:47:10stumble
00:47:10it goes out of
00:47:12bowser does it
00:47:13out of bowser
00:47:15and Seattle
00:47:15maintains control
00:47:17Raymond Claiborne
00:47:19very close to
00:47:21recovering
00:47:21for New England
00:47:22a big break
00:47:24for the Seattle
00:47:24Seahawks
00:47:25that ball
00:47:26popped loose
00:47:27boy we've seen
00:47:28shaking tackles
00:47:30today the ball
00:47:31stripped away
00:47:31again here
00:47:32Randall Morris
00:47:33that's Roland
00:47:34James 38
00:47:35up on him
00:47:36Roland put his
00:47:37helmet on the
00:47:37football
00:47:37now that ball
00:47:38needs to be
00:47:39possessed
00:47:40by the New
00:47:41England Patriots
00:47:41they've got to
00:47:42get their hands
00:47:42on it
00:47:43and get it
00:47:43in possession
00:47:43you saw
00:47:44unfortunately
00:47:45the juggling
00:47:46of the ball
00:47:46as the body
00:47:47was out of
00:47:47bounds
00:47:47Seahawks
00:47:48dodged it
00:47:49back there
00:47:49the veteran
00:47:50Claiborne though
00:47:51realizing he had to do
00:47:52something to stay in
00:47:53bounds
00:47:53did all he could
00:47:54to try to
00:47:55cover it
00:47:55second and eight
00:47:57Morris
00:48:00to the
00:48:01438 yard line
00:48:03like to go back
00:48:03to the previous play
00:48:04in Roland James
00:48:05here's Roland James
00:48:06a man who has
00:48:08suffered a knee
00:48:08injury last week
00:48:10on a cracked back
00:48:11block by Wayne
00:48:12Capers
00:48:12was so mad
00:48:13he swung
00:48:14and hit
00:48:14Capers
00:48:14hit him in the
00:48:15helmet
00:48:15and not only
00:48:16fractured his
00:48:17index finger
00:48:18it went right
00:48:18through the skin
00:48:19the compound
00:48:19fracture
00:48:20here he is
00:48:21playing today
00:48:22and he just
00:48:22made that
00:48:23vicious hit
00:48:23if you can
00:48:25imagine
00:48:25dislocating
00:48:26the top
00:48:26joint of
00:48:27your index
00:48:27finger
00:48:28and the pain
00:48:28that goes
00:48:29with it
00:48:29knocked the
00:48:30knocked the
00:48:30fingernail
00:48:31right off
00:48:32I mean
00:48:32it just
00:48:33you had to
00:48:33push that
00:48:33back down
00:48:34and tape
00:48:34it down
00:48:35third down
00:48:37and eight
00:48:37no third
00:48:37down and three
00:48:38and incomplete
00:48:41to the
00:48:41Paul Scancy
00:48:4382
00:48:44and Craig
00:48:45here's the
00:48:46booper
00:48:47he's not
00:48:48amazingly
00:48:48despite the
00:48:49fact that he
00:48:50was second
00:48:50only to
00:48:50Marino
00:48:51in touchdown
00:48:52passes last
00:48:53year
00:48:53he's number
00:48:54one in the
00:48:54NFL this year
00:48:55with 20
00:48:56touchdown passes
00:48:56and still
00:48:57they are eager
00:48:58to boo him
00:48:59in Seattle
00:49:00Dave Finzer
00:49:05to punt
00:49:05dangerous
00:49:07Irving
00:49:08Fryer
00:49:08back at the
00:49:0921 yard line
00:49:10for New England
00:49:11he has taken
00:49:11two back
00:49:12for scores
00:49:13hang time
00:49:15the secret here
00:49:15he's got to
00:49:16get it up
00:49:16in the air
00:49:16short
00:49:17Fryer
00:49:19no fair
00:49:21catch
00:49:21oh and he
00:49:23was one man
00:49:24away from
00:49:25turning that
00:49:25one to the
00:49:26near sidelines
00:49:27good saving
00:49:28tackle by the
00:49:29special teams
00:49:30of Seattle
00:49:30second year
00:49:31man Fred
00:49:31Young
00:49:32who has taken
00:49:32over the
00:49:32inside line
00:49:33backing job
00:49:34from Sheldon
00:49:34Robinson
00:49:35leading the
00:49:35Seahawks
00:49:36through the
00:49:36first ten
00:49:37games and
00:49:37tackles
00:49:38Kenny
00:49:38Easley
00:49:38from a
00:49:39safety
00:49:39position
00:49:39Keith
00:49:40Butler
00:49:40the other
00:49:40inside man
00:49:41right there
00:49:42with Young
00:49:43who's a superb
00:49:44athlete
00:49:44made the
00:49:45Pro Bowl
00:49:45as a special
00:49:46teamer
00:49:46last year
00:49:47after a
00:49:4932 yard punt
00:49:50minus two
00:49:50on the return
00:49:51by Fryer
00:49:52Grogan
00:49:53sets up
00:49:53Shaft
00:49:53at his own
00:49:5428
00:49:55leading
00:49:557-3
00:49:56with 3.29
00:49:57left in the
00:49:58first half
00:49:59Tony Collins
00:50:00ran into
00:50:01his own
00:50:01blocker
00:50:02and then he's
00:50:03secured by Young
00:50:04Bruce Schultz
00:50:05there as well
00:50:06Stanley Morgan
00:50:08with a
00:50:09hamstring
00:50:09on the
00:50:10sidelines
00:50:11the all-time
00:50:11receiver for
00:50:12the Patriots
00:50:13that's why
00:50:13we're seeing
00:50:14Cedric Jones
00:50:15and Stephan
00:50:15starring
00:50:16don't know
00:50:17how serious
00:50:17that is
00:50:18but he's
00:50:18not played
00:50:19since the
00:50:19first period
00:50:20the all-time
00:50:21NFL leader
00:50:22in yards
00:50:24per catch
00:50:24Paul Warfield
00:50:25and Bullet
00:50:26Bob Hayes
00:50:26the only other
00:50:27two men
00:50:28over 20
00:50:28yard average
00:50:29Collins
00:50:30on a draw play
00:50:31and very close
00:50:32to breaking
00:50:32that one
00:50:33for a long
00:50:33game
00:50:34Young
00:50:34got him
00:50:35around the
00:50:35ankle
00:50:36after about
00:50:37a five-yard
00:50:37carry
00:50:38we've talked
00:50:42about Fred
00:50:42Young
00:50:43the outstanding
00:50:44linebacker
00:50:45youngster in
00:50:45there though
00:50:46he's having
00:50:47some
00:50:47he's having
00:50:48some adjustment
00:50:48problems in a
00:50:49sense that if
00:50:50you show him
00:50:50new reads
00:50:51he has a little
00:50:52trouble adjusting
00:50:53but boy he has
00:50:54a great nose
00:50:55for the football
00:50:56and you can
00:50:57always find him
00:50:58where the action
00:50:58is
00:50:59third and
00:51:00five
00:51:01whoops
00:51:04no play
00:51:0767
00:51:08the house
00:51:08Steve Moore
00:51:09pulling back
00:51:11and perhaps
00:51:11the noise
00:51:12contributing
00:51:13to his not
00:51:14hearing the
00:51:14snap count
00:51:15full start
00:51:15number 67
00:51:17offense
00:51:18turn down
00:51:19you see the feet
00:51:20moving at the top
00:51:21they belong to the
00:51:22house
00:51:22and I talked to
00:51:23John Hanna
00:51:23he said
00:51:24you know
00:51:24we've decided
00:51:25to rename
00:51:26the house
00:51:26he said
00:51:27houses are
00:51:27stationary
00:51:28we want him
00:51:28to move
00:51:29we're going to
00:51:29call him
00:51:29the mobile
00:51:30home
00:51:30he's the man
00:51:33that they'll put
00:51:33in the backfield
00:51:34on occasion
00:51:35the refrigerator
00:51:36he says
00:51:38he's trying
00:51:38to get up
00:51:39to 300 pounds
00:51:39so he can gain
00:51:40more notoriety
00:51:41he's only 295
00:51:42well I think
00:51:43he said
00:51:43he was 298
00:51:44today
00:51:44I talked to him
00:51:45before the game
00:51:45so he's gaining
00:51:46on it

00:53:14They've used him only 17 times.
00:53:217-3 with a minute 49 left in the half.
00:53:24The Patriots look at second and ten from their 41.
00:53:33Friar near side.
00:53:36Cedric Jones to the far side.
00:53:37Friar was open with the pass behind him at the Seattle 43.
00:53:49Some heat on Grogan.
00:53:51I'll tell you one thing about Steve Grogan.
00:53:54He'll stand in there until the last possible second and take the crack.
00:53:58He'll take that shot just to get the pass away.
00:54:01In fact, talking to Joe Klecko of the New York Jets, he said,
00:54:04we hit Grogan so hard we crushed him.
00:54:07But we thought he would never get off the ground.
00:54:09He bounced right back up, called another pass play,
00:54:12and threw it down for a completion.
00:54:14He is one tough quarterback.
00:54:16Third and ten.
00:54:28And he goes in the grasp of Joe Nash.
00:54:33A flag is also down.
00:54:35Nash, a free agent out of Boston College.
00:54:39You know, the Patriots through the years have taken more players from Boston College,
00:54:4215, than any other college or university.
00:54:45But they didn't pick Nash.
00:54:46No one did.
00:54:47And Seattle found themselves an all-pro at nose tackle in that man.
00:54:51But penalty against Seattle.
00:54:53Offside.
00:54:54Offside number 22 defense.
00:54:57Third down.
00:54:58Dave Brown, the cornerback, was offside.
00:55:01Watch the big stunt going on inside.
00:55:03They're going to take Bryant and bring him all the way to the inside.
00:55:06And Nash is going to run around all the way to the outside.
00:55:09Backers are blitzing to the inside.
00:55:12And, of course, they end up getting great pressure on Grogan here.
00:55:15There's the play to the outside.
00:55:17It's Nash going all the way back out around.
00:55:19They do a good job of picking it up.
00:55:21But there he is to get a piece of the tackle.
00:55:24Dave Brown, the cornerback, lined up on the scrimmage line, was offside.
00:55:28So another chance for Grogan on third and five.
00:55:33Incomplete.
00:55:33Intended for Fryer.
00:55:34And Kenny Easley was right there for Seattle.
00:55:38Though with a minute 35 left, Seattle will have some time.
00:55:41All their timeouts remain to try to take the lead before the intermission.
00:55:45Dangerously close to a reception.
00:55:48Easley makes a good reaction to cover some distance here.
00:55:51He's got to get outside on Fryer.
00:55:54And he didn't get there in time to stop that pass.
00:55:56Fryer just couldn't hang on to it as Grogan was able to get it off
00:55:59into an area where Easley couldn't touch it.
00:56:03Paul Scanty will return for Seattle.
00:56:05He's back at the ten.
00:56:08They've been coming after Camarillo.
00:56:10And they have ten men on the line of scrimmage this time.
00:56:12Scanty will return it.
00:56:18Fifteen.
00:56:20Twenty-five.
00:56:22Forty.
00:56:23And down at the forty-five.
00:56:26The former Husky.
00:56:27University of Washington, Paul Scanty.
00:56:30With a superb return.
00:56:32You win.
00:56:33Your defense plays big games.
00:56:36And that's been the Patriots story.
00:56:38The last five games they've allowed an average of less than twelve points per game to their opponents.
00:56:43Almost cut that twenty-two point six in the half.
00:56:46And, of course, during that period of time have made so many big plays on defense.
00:56:50And number fifty-six on the left-hand side of your screen, Andre Tippett.
00:56:54A very big part of that story.
00:56:56But has been strangely silent so far in this game.
00:56:59We have not seen him making the kind of plays that he has been making throughout the season.
00:57:03We'll keep an eye on and see what's going on.
00:57:05What they're doing to slow him down in there.
00:57:07Thirty-two-yard punt return by Scanty.
00:57:09The two big plays for Seattle have been kick returns in this half.
00:57:12Craig has a man open.
00:57:15Eric Lane.
00:57:16Out of bounds at the New England forty-five-yard line.
00:57:20That stops the clock with a minute seventeen seconds left in the half.
00:57:23Ron Essink, number sixty-four, the left tackle, apparently knocked down on that play.
00:57:30Looks like he's got a hold of his left hand, though, right hand.
00:57:34He'll go to the sideline for a play, perhaps.
00:57:37Ryan Mallard probably will be in his place on that left-hand side.
00:57:41The doctors, Jim Weitzel, a trainer over quickly to take a look at him.
00:57:47Craig, a rather quiet first half throwing the football.
00:57:53First down.
00:57:57And he threw that one away.
00:57:59Eric Lane, covered by Don Blackman, and Tippett was applying the pressure that time.
00:58:04Andre Tippett, so powerful and quick.
00:58:07You see him coming from a three-point stance in that situation.
00:58:10Two men trying to block him.
00:58:12He simply ran out of time.
00:58:14He was blowing through it, gotten away from both of those blockers.
00:58:17Boy, he is explosive.
00:58:19Maybe that's why we haven't heard much from him.
00:58:21They're putting two men on him.
00:58:22You better believe that if he was on the other side of the line
00:58:25and I was responsible, I'd have at least two guys on him.
00:58:31A minute, 12 seconds left in the first half.
00:58:33Seattle's second and ten from the Patriot, 45.
00:58:37Four wide receivers for the Hawks.
00:58:39The Hawks.
00:58:44Incomplete.
00:58:45Marion was covering Steve Larchens.
00:58:47Dave Craig from Little Milton, Wisconsin College.
00:58:57Dave Craig, of course, taking the snap in the shotgun.
00:59:00We'll get the pressure from the left-hand side.
00:59:03Just go ahead and roll it.
00:59:05We'll see it coming in from the outside here.
00:59:07They run a stunt out there.
00:59:09And Tippett's coming inside.
00:59:12Kreider there to meet him.
00:59:13They were able to get good protection for Craig.
00:59:16He simply overthrew the pass.
00:59:20Turner and Largent both to the right.
00:59:24Walker and Scanty to the left.
00:59:26Third and ten.
00:59:32Craig for Largent.
00:59:33He's got it out of bounds.
00:59:37Complete at the 26-yard line.
00:59:40And that is a new NFL record.
00:59:43Steve Largent becomes the only man in history
00:59:46that eight years of catching 50 or more passes.
00:59:52Largent.
00:59:53Excuse me, Dick.
00:59:54Largent is just a master.
00:59:56You see him cutting across the heels
00:59:57and gets Rod McSwain, 23, to turn.
01:00:00It's such a great secret for him
01:00:03to get those defensive backs
01:00:04to do what he wants them to do.
01:00:06He just forces them to make a turn,
01:00:07get out of position,
01:00:08and then quickly back into the pattern.
01:00:11He buries his patterns all the time.
01:00:12It's hard to figure out where he's going.
01:00:14But he knows, and Craig knows.
01:00:17And Raymond Berry appreciates.
01:00:19He's part of the admiration society.
01:00:21In fact, Raymond Berry likens this young man,
01:00:24his talents, to what Berry used in his great year.
01:00:26One was that they both had 50 catches or more
01:00:29in seven seasons, as did Art Powell
01:00:31with the Titans and the Raiders,
01:00:33Lance Allworth, and Charlie Taylor.
01:00:35Now only Steve Largent,
01:00:38the sole receiver to catch 50
01:00:40in eight different years.
01:00:42Only his 10th season in the league.
01:00:44Eight times with 50 catches or more.
01:00:47One of the things that jumps out in similarity
01:00:49between those two men
01:00:50is how hard they worked to utilize their talent.
01:00:53Both spend long hours,
01:00:55spend long hours,
01:00:56and Largent's still spending those hours,
01:00:57to work with his quarterback after practice.
01:01:00You'll see him the last man off the field
01:01:03more than once a week.
01:01:06Meanwhile, Seattle in position
01:01:08to take the lead before halftime.
01:01:09Exactly a minute remaining
01:01:10from the 26th of New England.
01:01:13Craig going deep for Turner.
01:01:16Nicely covered by Rod McSwain.
01:01:19It was a third-round pick
01:01:21of the Atlanta Falcons last year,
01:01:23and the Falcons decided they didn't need him,
01:01:26so New England went after him
01:01:28and picked him off for a number-eight draft choice
01:01:30and a good fifth defensive back.
01:01:33Certainly did a great job on Turner in that situation.
01:01:36Turner leading the NFL with 10 receptions
01:01:39on four touchdowns.
01:01:42Of course, any time they can try and get him deep,
01:01:45he's in danger to catch that football
01:01:46and put some points on the board.
01:01:4855 seconds left in the half.
01:01:51Second and 10.
01:01:59Craig in trouble.
01:02:01And down he goes.
01:02:02From behind, Garen Varis,
01:02:05his sixth sack of the year.
01:02:07The rookie from Stanford,
01:02:08and time called by the Seahawks
01:02:11to stop the clock at the 48-second mark.
01:02:13John Borchardt is in there.
01:02:15We talked about Essig being injured,
01:02:17and it's Borchardt's man, Varis,
01:02:21who gets up off the ground,
01:02:22and it's hard to blame a young offensive lineman for that
01:02:26because Craig just simply took too long
01:02:28and actually was trying to run out of there
01:02:29when Varis caught his heels.
01:02:31It'll be a loss of about eight yards in the play,
01:02:33and there are the top sack masters for the Pats.
01:02:36Tippett with 10 among the leaders.
01:02:38Blackman with 8, including 1 today,
01:02:40and Varis' count up to six with Kenneth Sims 5.
01:02:44They lead the AFC.
01:02:45Well, Andre Tippett leads the AFC,
01:02:48or led, coming into today,
01:02:49but so far today he has been shut out
01:02:51of the soccer department.
01:02:53Tippett last year had 18 and a half,
01:02:55second only to Mark Gastineau's 22.
01:02:58There's Andre, a black belt in karate.
01:03:02Boy, he's a big linebacker.
01:03:03I have to believe that that really helps him, too,
01:03:06in his pass rush.
01:03:07He knows how to use leverage so well.
01:03:08He knows how to use a man's strength against him.
01:03:11You notice how he has his sleeves tied up there.
01:03:15When you get in and you're rushing,
01:03:16these offensive linemen grab everything
01:03:18they can get a hold of.
01:03:19Well, Tippett doesn't want to give him
01:03:21any cloth there on the sleeves.
01:03:22I thought that was just to show off those huge biceps.
01:03:28Big play for both clubs, third and 18.
01:03:31And a flag down before the snap.
01:03:40That usually means illegal motion.
01:03:43He had someone off before the ball.
01:03:46Might have been Bob Fryder, the right tackle.
01:03:49I think maybe Largent, too, number 80, was moving.
01:03:52False start.
01:03:53What's the number?
01:03:54Well, we can't help.
01:03:56Maybe he wants to ask us.
01:03:59All start, number 78, offense, turn down.
01:04:03It was, Brad.
01:04:03That's like the kid in the Christmas pageant
01:04:05who then says the wrong line and covers his mouth.
01:04:08Mark Bright didn't know his microphone was on.
01:04:11What's the number?
01:04:12Better to have it right than to have it wrong.
01:04:15Bob Fryder, of course, a former Patriot himself,
01:04:18traded here to Seattle, has become a fixture for the Seahawks,
01:04:21battling against his own teammates.
01:04:23And next to him, Robert Pratt, who's back in the lineup.
01:04:25He's played against these Patriots many times.
01:04:28Of course, came here from the Baltimore Colts,
01:04:31the then Baltimore Colts.
01:04:34Third and long for Dave Craig from a crowd.
01:04:39Looks for Largent, can't find him at the 28.
01:04:42They're going to give him a reception, Dick.
01:04:45Claiborne on the coverage.
01:04:47They're going to give him a reception.
01:04:49No, no, no, they did not have possession of the ball.
01:04:52That's exactly right.
01:04:53But the official who called it first was looking at his feet.
01:04:58And the call was based on what happened to Largent's feet.
01:05:03Now, the pass right here.
01:05:04Largent is knocked out of bounds.
01:05:05Ball onto the ball when he landed out of bounds.
01:05:07Ruled incomplete.
01:05:08Okay.
01:05:08And they're exactly right.
01:05:10But right here, you get the ruling
01:05:12because he's pushed out of bounds.
01:05:13The official who made the call
01:05:15could not see what happened at the end of the play.
01:05:17In fact, even our camera angle was tough to see the ball obscured.
01:05:20But another official quickly in to help with the call.
01:05:23And that's good.
01:05:24It's good to see them work as a team that way.
01:05:26Well, we've had the big scoring games in the short side of that.
01:05:29The field goal battle down in Los Angeles
01:05:31between the Bengals and Raiders
01:05:32in contrast to that Jets-Tampa Bay game.
01:05:36Beautiful kick by Fenzer,
01:05:38but it goes into the end zone.
01:05:39And with it, a touchback for the Patriots.
01:05:43And 31 seconds remain for Raymond Berry's Patriots.
01:05:47They have their timeouts left, at least two of them.
01:05:50Will they try to go for an addition to that 7-3 lead?
01:05:53We'll have all the scores, the outstanding plays of the day.
01:05:56You can almost do an NFL 85 on the Jets offense alone.
01:06:00And the Bears defense.
01:06:01And a part of a highlight.
01:06:03No question about it.
01:06:04Raymond Berry, the praise of this man's leadership growing each week.
01:06:15A lot of folks, because of his taciturn demeanor, wondering,
01:06:19well, what's he do anyway?
01:06:21Well, what he does is build confidence in his team.
01:06:23And they really love him as a man and as a leader.
01:06:26He wants them to take credit.
01:06:27He will not take a chance here on the road with a 7-3 lead,
01:06:31content to run out the clock.
01:06:33And so will Chuck Knox.
01:06:34So with 20 seconds left, both teams are already on their way to the locker room.
01:06:41That might be a new record.
01:06:43Steve Grogan will be in the locker room before the gun sounds ending the first half.
01:06:52Now it's official.
01:06:56Raymond Berry, looking for the Patriots' sixth consecutive win,
01:07:00has a 7-3 lead, and it's certainly tough here in Seattle to beat the Seahawks,
01:07:07as many have learned.
01:07:09New England, with a win, would move back into a tie,
01:07:11sharing first place with the New York Jets, a team.
01:07:14They'll play next Sunday.
01:07:15And, of course, here in Seattle, every time a Denver-San Diego score is announced
01:07:19and San Diego leads, they cheer because they're hoping for a Seattle win
01:07:22and a Denver loss that would vault the Seahawks into a tie for first place.
01:07:25Right back in the thick of it, wouldn't it?
01:07:27Well, the one touchdown we had of the first half, we now can show you,
01:07:30the reverse by Irving Fryer on first and goal at the 8.
01:07:32An interesting call.
01:07:34Very interesting call.
01:07:35And, again, taking advantage of the quick reactions of that Seattle defense.
01:07:40You'll see the block again by John Hanna.
01:07:42It was critical in that situation,
01:07:44freeing up Irving Fryer to use his speed
01:07:46and, of course, get himself into the end zone.
01:07:48One of the few offensive highlights that we had in this first half.
01:07:52Most everything dominated by the defenses.
01:07:54And almost dangerously close to being covered by New England.
01:07:59That's a free ball.
01:08:01Seattle finally pounces on it at the 23-yard line.
01:08:04Seattle let a kick bounce like that early in the game,
01:08:07and it went out of bounds.
01:08:08But you can't afford to make a mistake like that.
01:08:10You've got to get your body on that football.
01:08:12Seahawks get their first chance here in the second half.
01:08:15I'm sure they've had a chance to talk some strategy,
01:08:18look at what this New England defense is doing.
01:08:21And while they're lining up, let's look quickly at the yardage.
01:08:25And 154 yards for the Patriots, 129 for the Seahawks.
01:08:28Not an impressive stat, certainly.
01:08:31Turnover is even at 2 in the first half.
01:08:32And time of possession.
01:08:33So it was as even as the score would reflect.
01:08:36Only one touchdown, that by New England.
01:08:39Craig over the middle to Eric Lane,
01:08:42who was smothered by Steve Nelson
01:08:43after a game of about seven.
01:08:48Take one of the things you have to admire
01:08:50about Chuck Knox and his staff.
01:08:52They have had a lot of problems,
01:08:53a lot of player problems this year.
01:08:55Losing Hughes and Dornick.
01:08:57They're two, they're number one and number two fullbacks.
01:08:59And they've got to go to a guy
01:09:00who's really a special teams player, Eric Lane.
01:09:03But Knox said something interesting.
01:09:04He said at least he knows who to get
01:09:06and how to get him.
01:09:07And has responded when we've given him the opportunity.
01:09:10That's typical of Knox teams.
01:09:12Lane only 195 pounds,
01:09:14so he'd have to be the lightest fullback in the league
01:09:17starting today.
01:09:19Craig under pressure, trying to dump it off to Warner.
01:09:22That's the good news, that Warner's back in the lineup.
01:09:24But the bad news is they misconnect
01:09:26as Craig was being hit around the ankles
01:09:28as he delivered the ball.
01:09:29Andre Tippett.
01:09:31They wondered what had been happening to Tippett.
01:09:33Well, his presence felt instantly
01:09:35here in the second half.
01:09:36Watch him.
01:09:37That's Robert Pratt, 61, trying to pick him up.
01:09:39And he just blows over the top of Pratt
01:09:41and goes right into Craig's legs.
01:09:44Craig smartly getting rid of that football out of bounds
01:09:46saves the sack.
01:09:50Third down and seven.
01:09:51Tippett and Lippett side by side
01:09:59on the left side for New England.
01:10:02Craig has a man open.
01:10:05Paul Scancy, first down at the 37.
01:10:09Roland James with a solid hit,
01:10:11but a 12-yard gain for the Hawks.
01:10:14The protection that time by the Seattle offensive line,
01:10:18not as big as that huge line for the Patriots
01:10:21we mentioned earlier.
01:10:23Of course, they've been hurt,
01:10:24although Essink is back in the ballgame here
01:10:26in the second half.
01:10:27He left toward the end of the third quarter.
01:10:30That's good news for the Seahawks.
01:10:36Largent to the left on first down.
01:10:45Warner for about five.
01:10:48We ask about Kurt Warner's ankle.
01:10:52He gives us a quick answer.
01:10:54Good quickness on that play as he exploded.
01:10:58And that was similar to the kinds of plays
01:10:59he got off with in the first series today.
01:11:01Had some excellent runs in that first series.
01:11:04And there you see the cutting ability,
01:11:06that staggering, wavering kind of look there.
01:11:08So difficult for a defense to set up on a back
01:11:11who can move so quickly from left to right.
01:11:14Four yards make it second and six,
01:11:16and he's got seventy-three yards for the afternoon.
01:11:26Through the hands of Eric Lane, the fullback.
01:11:29It's going to be tough for him.
01:11:31He's called upon to do a lot of blocking.
01:11:33And while Lane has been a star on the special teams,
01:11:35he's, in fact, the co-captain
01:11:36in a role that he's not totally familiar.
01:11:40He's a halfback when used before,
01:11:43third behind Warner and Randall Morris.
01:11:46You mentioned the yardage for Warner.
01:11:49He's averaged 5.8 yards per carry,
01:11:52so he's had an excellent average on the day.
01:11:53Craig James, 4.9 per carry on the day.
01:12:05Eric Lane covered well by Don Blackman.
01:12:08Blackman was playing in front of Lane.
01:12:10Now they're booing Craig,
01:12:11but had he thrown the ball on target,
01:12:13Blackman would have had a sure interception.
01:12:16I think a good part of maturity for a quarterback
01:12:19is knowing when he's got to get rid of that football,
01:12:21not taking the sack,
01:12:23just simply putting it out of bounds
01:12:24or eating it if he has to
01:12:26rather than take the risks.
01:12:29Finzer to punt.
01:12:31Irving Fryer,
01:12:33second only to Lewis Lips of Pittsburgh,
01:12:36both in return yardage.
01:12:38They both have two touchdowns returned this year.
01:12:41That was short kick.
01:12:43Fryer on the run at the 30.
01:12:4535, and boy, he's a gambler.
01:12:48What a great play by Irving Fryer.
01:12:50Get it.
