Erik Morales challenges Daniel Zaragoza for the WBC Featherweight title on HBO Boxing After Dark
Transcript
00:00:00now let's turn our attention to the main event of the evening here daniel zaragosa pressing
00:00:05down on age 40 getting ready to take on 21 year old eric morales larry merchant a lot of credit
00:00:10is paid to zaragosa for having lasted so long in his career should he be seen as a great fighter
00:00:15because of his extraordinary durability or is he extraordinarily durable because he's always been
00:00:21a great fighter if there was a mount rushmore for great prize fighters i don't think he would be up
00:00:26there but wherever his wing but wherever they put the prize fighters like george foreman and azuma
00:00:33nelson great old champions he belongs right there and what he's doing right now is every bit as
00:00:40impressive as what george foreman is doing in the heavyweight division for a 39 year old man
00:00:47to compete in the lower divisions where quickness energy uh stamina means so much
00:00:54it's amazing what he's done having said that we should also remember that the best 122 pounder in
00:01:00the world is junior jones but daniel zaragoza is an amazing old guy he's an underdog tonight he's an
00:01:06underdog in life that always manages to win you make a great point it's one thing for foreman to do it in
00:01:12a weight class where he can weigh whatever he wants zaragoza has been making 122 before that 118 for a long
00:01:19long time and he can still do it although he says it's awfully painful for him roy jones young eric
00:01:25morales says that he's waited way too long for this title fight been the mandatory contender for
00:01:30zaragoza for more than a year he has other reasons to believe that he's angry at zaragoza and he says he
00:01:35wants to attack him viciously in the first few rounds good for morales because it might take the older
00:01:40man's legs away or bad because it'll play into zaragoza's counterpunching style that's according
00:01:45to which zaragoza shows up tonight zaragoza is a crafty veteran he's the type of guy that you can
00:01:50take him grab him up throw him in a box with a bunch of bulldogs and he'll still come out unbitten
00:01:55he's that type of guy he's that tough and he definitely gets my vote for the coolest guy
00:02:00under pressure that there has ever been in boxing you can take him put him in somebody else's backyard
00:02:05he'll go there and treat that like it's his backyard and even if he loses he's still going to be cool
00:02:10about it you know that's a very good point if you're looking for a fighter who's as relaxed as
00:02:13foreman in the ring this is the guy right it has to be daniel zaragoza yeah but i think eric
00:02:18morales is doing a good thing by putting the pressure on because if you're going to beat a guy like
00:02:22him you should pressure him but after watching the way mcculler fight it also could play into
00:02:27zaragoza's hands because wayne mcculler was a guy who i thought was the best pressure fighter
00:02:32around for a long time and daniel zaragoza took him to boxing school so eric morales i hope
00:02:39learned something from that fight and i hope he won't come here and fall for the same thing that
00:02:43the last guy did all right let's take a look at the tail of the tape between daniel zaragoza
00:02:48and eric morales they're fighting for zaragoza's 122 pound world championship tonight they both weigh
00:02:54126 four-inch reach advantage for morales who will have a variety of physical advantages in the ring
00:03:01including his 18-year age differential rules of the bout with our unofficial ringside scorer harold
00:03:07letterman the daniel zaragoza eric morales fight is scheduled for 12 rounds once again there is no
00:03:13standing eight count no three knockdown rule only the referee can stop the fight and you can be saved
00:03:19by the bell in the 12th and final round only jim all right thank you very much harold
00:03:26only the referee can stop the fight and you can be saved by the bell in the 12th and final round only
00:03:32jim all right thank you very much harold wildly enthusiastic fight crowd here in el paso
00:03:42as eric morales from tijuana mexico and as the ring on the right you see his father who was a
00:03:48professional fighter and who did everything he could to discourage his two sons from being fighters
00:03:55including closing down his own gymnasium and when eric turned pro he gave him three of the toughest
00:04:02opening fights a young professional could get when he won those fights the dad said okay you're a fighter
00:04:09let's go and then he said if my son is going to be a prize fighter i'll help him with my experience
00:04:17and he's tried diligently to keep his son from being put into bad matches and to see to it that
00:04:22he gets paid for his services he has a younger son who has also elected to be a professional prize
00:04:28fighter and has seven wins and no losses and there's the record for morales 26 wins no losses 20 ko's
00:04:36most of those fights before wildly rabid hometown crowds in tijuana where his fans and supporters say
00:04:43he's every bit as big an attraction as julio cesar chavez used to be when he would fight there between
00:04:48title fights
00:04:53and look at this face
00:04:54he looks like mount rushmore i like you guys along up there he's got more wrinkles than anybody else in
00:05:03the sport literally and figuratively
00:05:09but he's still the coolest thing you want to see oh is he amazing morales says this is a fight between
00:05:14beauty and the beast if it is this may not be the game to want to be the beauty when you're fighting
00:05:21the beast and if zaragoza's experience of pedigree weren't formidable enough his trainer nacho bernstein
00:05:29has trained 11 world champions has three of them right now including zaragoza and including ricardo lopez
00:05:36who is at this moment the greatest of all mexican fighters the strawweight champion who's 46-0 with 35
00:05:42knockouts zaragoza 55 wins seven losses three draws 27 ko's he insists if he loses tonight he retires
00:05:51retirement is a constant topic of conversation at every zaragoza fight i think he's been inspired
00:05:58by his own talk of retirement because he doesn't want to let's go to michael buffer for the official

00:09:00bantamweight champion of the world
00:09:21hey eric come here quickly
00:09:24that's all the spanish are no baby
00:09:37morales is not impressed everyone as a prize fighter but every time he moves up in class
00:09:45he moves his game up if he moves it up again tonight he will sustain himself
00:09:51as a champion and you heard referee lawrence cole's admission that's all the spanish i know baby
00:09:59cole has been advised by the texas state athletic commission tonight to use only four words to
00:10:03communicate to the boxers box break stop and time each of the two boxers has been schooled to understand
00:10:11those four english words tonight because neither uses english in everyday conversations box break stop and time
00:10:21morales for a guy who said he wanted to go at zaragosa savagely in the opening rounds
00:10:31comes out a little bit languid dancing from side to side and not throwing punches as the southpaw zaragosa
00:10:39looks for ways to land his jab and part of the reason why he's not throwing punches is because
00:10:43zaragosa always fakes as though he's coming with this big bomb and it keeps the other guys on defense so
00:10:48much until they can't come at him like they want to he gives that little head dip and it seems
00:10:55that he's going to throw overhand up like he did right there and they have to respect that
00:11:02oh there he lands it yep now he'll have to respect it that's for sure
00:11:05zaragosa ducking ducking the straight right landing a little pawing right
00:11:18doesn't do a lot of damage with his punches he just puts the gloves on over and over and over
00:11:23because the best defense like we said earlier tonight is offense
00:11:27now morales starts to find zaragosa nailed him with the right hand as zaragosa was coming in
00:11:42morales seems determined to try to establish his left jab he may have trouble doing that against
00:11:46the southpaw yeah because that left hand is right there and jane has already established his right
00:11:52jab there's that overhand left again
00:12:00incidentally there is no air conditioning in this arena
00:12:04and in a moment or two we'll try to get a look at a ringside thermometer and figure out exactly what
00:12:08are the conditions under which the fighters are working right now not good not good at all
00:12:21one of the things you notice roy is that when zaragosa punches
00:12:26morales backs off he doesn't fire right back no i think he's trying to let zaragosa wear himself down
00:12:33a little bit but from what we've seen of zaragosa that won't be happening anytime soon
00:12:38well it may happen in the 11th round when he's ahead eight to two zaragosa with a winging seeing
00:12:45eye left over the top and morales blocking some shots with his gloves but it's been a
00:12:51largely inactive round for 21 year old eric morales and zaragosa landed that one big left-hand shot
00:12:58temperature 90 degrees at ringside you get under the lights in the middle of the ring and i would
00:13:09vouchsafe it's a little bit more than that and as we go to both corners where spanish is the predominant
00:13:14language our interpreter is ray torres
00:13:23you need to keep your hands up until you get the distance that you need when you come out
00:13:29make sure you don't have your hands down because he's going to counter you with the right hand
00:13:32close your eyes let's get some vaseline on you
00:13:41everything's okay you need to be real alive
00:13:47he's really an amateur he doesn't have too much respect
00:13:49let's go eric it's a championship fight zaragosa looks like he's got a 29 year old's body and a 49
00:14:03year old's head which is which is why he's 39 morales landed his most solid jab of the bout and
00:14:11there's another one he begins to pump the jab with a little bit more purpose
00:14:16now by establishing that jab first he gets out in front of daniel zaragosa and it's easier for him
00:14:21to hit daniel but soon as he has a lack in his action daniel zaragosa comes right back and starts
00:14:27faking at him and he gets in front of the action morales able to release only 34 punches in the
00:14:32first round as he was tentative against zaragosa's curious style seems determined to be a little bit
00:14:37more aggressive in this round and seems more relaxed as well and he fought a smart round he
00:14:42didn't take a lot of big chances he stayed sharp and that would be the main thing for him tonight
00:14:46i think good shot by zaragosa zaragosa raking morales with that awkward left hand shot over the top
00:14:53he throws punches from weird angles and lands sometimes when you don't think it's possible
00:14:58he's done that now three or four times roy so i suspect that they just saw something in the tapes
00:15:03and he tends to drop his right hand morales yeah and he's giving him a little head fake like
00:15:07he's going to the body with the left hand is zaragosa when he dropped the hand a little bit he comes
00:15:12over the top
00:15:29there are some zaragosa fans who will tell you that the fight hasn't begun until he's bleeding
00:15:33he claims that in two fights against paul banky he sustained double figures worth of cuts
00:15:40they don't bother him much no they don't bother him at all in fact i think they motivate him
00:15:45he had 15 cuts in one fight with banky
00:15:50again that looping left hand over the top landed flush on the right cheek of eric morales
00:15:56it doesn't seem to be bothering morales at all though he's very focused in on what he wants but
00:16:03it's scoring yeah it's scoring but he's concentrating he's a younger fighter best right
00:16:07hand of the early going for morales zaragosa may have been hamming it up a little bit as he bounced back
00:16:12into the ropes
00:16:21we asked zaragosa if he thought that morales was as good a fighter as wayne mccullough and he said no way
00:16:27i think the reason he probably said that is because wayne mccullough is one of the busiest fighters of our decade
00:16:42yep between them mccullough and zaragosa threw more than 2200 punches for their 12 rounds in Boston
00:16:48and that is a bunch of punches fifth highest number of all time recorded by copy box
00:16:54two rounds in the books scheduled 12 daniel zaragosa and eric morales
00:17:18let's do some counter punching eric
00:17:20okay you need to work that right hand
00:17:28you gotta keep it trying to punch him in the in the body that's all the plexus is a good spot
00:17:32boys when you go to the right step back and step and then hit him
00:17:38when when you're in close make sure you punch throw punches
00:17:51make sure you you're alert and let's go in there
00:18:02round two not a very busy round for either fighter they threw a total of 69 punches between
00:18:16them morales would like to be throwing that many in one round
00:18:19he's keeping his composure good he's not letting daniel erupt his style at all
00:18:26he's doing exactly what he wants to do and that's good to see in a young fighter like morales
00:18:36now with the exception of a few looping punches over the top morales
00:18:39hasn't had many problems against saragossa but he hasn't scored much himself
00:18:55finally he blocked that overhand left
00:18:57saragossa pushing to the body morales lands a straight right hand
00:19:10saragossa with a clean shot the right hand to the body and morales just misses with a winging
00:19:16right hand inside
00:19:17morales has had some success in previous bikes switching to a southpaw stance so you wonder if
00:19:28he might try it here i don't think i don't think it's smart to switch against a southpaw when you
00:19:33find a turn southpaw when you're fighting another southpaw especially one that is as cagey as there
00:19:39goes maybe later in the tire a little
00:19:42so you don't expect to see delahoya try that against camacho the way he did against pernell
00:19:50whitaker maybe later in the fight once he figures out where camacho is coming from he might try but
00:19:55camacho is a lot quicker than he was in his older days he's more focused on what he's doing
00:19:59and i don't think it'll be smart for delahoria to do that either
00:20:05right hand inside by morales as saragossa is coming in
00:20:12the other guy on the defense saragossa is as long as you keep the other guy defending you're
00:20:24gonna hit him soon saragossa able to keep his eyes open inside and wait for that opportunity with the
00:20:30left hand over the top
00:20:42zaragossa takes such a big step with that right foot when he comes in
00:20:45it seems as though someone should be able to catch him but for some reason
00:20:48they can't see the carry morales caught him with a straight left hand there and followed with a second
00:20:53straight left hand and drove zaragossa back into the rope yes but he answers like a champion
00:21:11and if you were with us at the beginning of the evening
00:21:14in our opening you met 21 year old vanessa duran from right here in el paso
00:21:19pre-med student at the university of texas at el paso who moonlights from time to time as a round
00:21:26card girl well there's a few people here with heat stroke maybe she could minister to us
00:21:34no treatment will be refused from vanessa
00:21:40here's morales who has been very patient very disciplined landing some jabs
00:21:46like that comes across with a couple of more to finish the round you wonder if
00:21:53that late barrage could have stolen the round for him
00:21:58in round three morales landed 13 of 21 jabs he is stepping up the pace with the stick
00:22:04and largely controlling the fight with it in the second and third round
00:22:08here we go right
00:22:13my copy box count through three rounds morales is out landed zaragossa 51 to 35
00:22:24definitely morales is the more economical of the two fighters
00:22:27but this is dang as zaragossa's fight he comes out he out punches his opponent and he keeps the pressure on
00:22:32a lot of times the judges will give their fight or give the round to the guy that's most busy
00:22:38zaragossa has thrown a few more punches than morales but his punch output went down dramatically in the
00:22:43second round and didn't come all that far back up in the third so both guys have been a little bit
00:22:49tentative as they search for opportunities against each other
00:22:58it's interesting that if anyone really goes on the attack and takes chances it's usually zaragossa the old guy
00:23:07straight left hand lands for morales
00:23:10zaragossa lunging and breaching and looking for another opportunity to get to morales's body
00:23:14morales now successfully staying away from that looping left hand over the top and landing his own
00:23:19straight right most young fighters also nowadays are learning that you don't have to go in and take
00:23:24all the risks if you can out box a guy stay outside and out boxing and that's kind of what he's doing
00:23:28to zaragossa right now but he has to make sure that he doesn't let zaragossa out working
00:23:44one thing i like so much about zaragossa though is that he's always on the attack never gives the
00:24:03guy a chance to set him up with too much because he always has the guy thinking about what it is that
00:24:08he's about to do right hand over the top by zaragossa speaks for itself morales looks like he just
00:24:20staggered momentarily looks more surprised than physically stunned but zaragossa has changed the
00:24:28fight with that one right hand sweep
00:24:30that's what happens when you let a guy constantly punch at you and you don't punch back he's gonna
00:24:38catch you sooner or later
00:24:42darragossa lands another right hand inside totally seizing the initiative away from eric morales
00:24:49in the closing seconds of the fourth round
00:24:56and morales tries to answer back like a champion that's the way guys this is the case we fight
00:25:02these are two champions
00:25:03he's he's surprised he surprised you with that point
00:25:20you got to change the point that's on there don't be running and don't step back that way
00:25:26he's tired now you got to throw combination to get in there
00:25:41take a look and see how zaragossa has stunned
00:25:44for rallies for a moment with an overhand right he has been throwing overhand lefts
00:25:50this time it was the right that did the damage he's an amazing old guy you would think that he'd used
00:25:56his slick and awkward southpaw style just to score points but if you back off from him
00:26:03he'll go right after you yes he will that wild loaded right hand over the top they don't teach
00:26:08that punch in the gym roy they don't teach that that looping left hand that he's been using earlier
00:26:12in the fight harold how do you harold letterman how do you have it after four two rounds apiece 38 38
00:26:18i get the first round to zaragossa and certainly daniel deserved that fourth round up on the basis
00:26:23that overhand right eric morales boxed a beautifully controlled fight through rounds two and three
00:26:27he'd wait for the zaragossa lunge and he'd pop him with a jab when zaragossa would come lunging in
00:26:31but certainly zaragossa pulled out the fourth round to even this up i don't guess they teach much of
00:26:36anything that zaragossa does now what it's called jim is he's adapting to the situation whatever he sees
00:26:42that he thinks will work he changes and he does that that's what distinguishes great fighters from
00:26:48good fighters most great fighters can adapt to the situation make something happen right there
00:26:52on the spot without having to work on or be taught that specific move
00:27:00he's schooled in the fundamentals well enough that he can stray from the fundamentals
00:27:06when he sees the opportunity he doesn't really stick to the fundamentals too much normally nope i mean
00:27:14he's off balance after his big punches he doesn't care he seems like he's always falling to himself
00:27:19but it never seems to have an effect on him he's also a master at convincing the judges he's winning
00:27:25the fight he knows how to style his body language to make it look as though he's even more in control
00:27:30than might normally be the case hard right hand over the top but morales answered back that time with two
00:27:36good shots well you heard morales's dad telling him between rounds in the corner
00:27:43that he could not let zaragossa get away with shots like that
00:27:49daniel's doing it again here turns morales's head with a looping left
00:27:58low blow by zaragossa referee lawrence cold didn't see it
00:28:01well it's getting right up cut by uh morales then too when zaragossa came in
00:28:10suddenly there's a breath of cool air here at ringside they found a fan for us oh my goodness
00:28:14i don't believe it this could change the whole evening for us if not the fighters
00:28:19right hand lands in close for zaragoza morales has to back out he had chased daniel into a corner
00:28:34but it was daniel who found the shot and daniel landed a very good body shot then on morales and i think
00:28:40it took a lot out of morales
00:28:45morales is starting to show a little wear and tear now
00:28:52zaragossa doesn't look exactly fresh as a daisy but yeah but this is dangerous
00:28:55there again that's how he looks when he wakes up in the morning
00:29:00i don't think i'm going to talk about it
00:29:07listen to what i'm going to say in saragossa
00:29:12you're waiting for him to throw and then you're comfortable you need to take advantage of everything
00:29:17and make sure you throw it to the body and so you can avoid his lunges
00:29:35you need to get closer to this guy you need to fight him at least one round up close
00:29:38don't let him get the distance on you keep up keep him up there be close to him
00:29:56great job by interpreter ray tares he works the night shift too
00:30:00we go to round six on boxing after dark daniel zaragoza in the green trunks against eric morales
00:30:06and the white zaragoza's 39 morales is 21 they're fighting for zaragoza's 122 pound title
00:30:16morales was about three and zaragoza turned pro
00:30:22morales landing inside and now he has zaragoza on the run
00:30:31sudden barrage of punches in close by eric morales who has some counter-punching ability of his own
00:30:36boy some very good counter-punching ability following the instructions of his corner
00:30:41to go to zaragoza and take him on and now zaragoza trying to seize the initiative back
00:30:48is about to take a clean shot at morales's body and lawrence cole stepped in and broke him up
00:30:53one thing i see morales doing that is not good for a young fighter is he's fighting an old veteran and
00:30:58he's looking for the referee to help get him off of him he has to stand up and be a man and be the champion
00:31:02and get him off of him and feel some more head butt and head butt
00:31:11and there will be blood on zaragoza i believe maybe a tiny cut above the left eyebrow maybe not
00:31:17yeah there may be something way up above the brow yeah a scratch doesn't look like it's
00:31:23dangerous at this point so now the fight is officially underway for zaragoza
00:31:27stop no no no no no break he's finally bleeding
00:31:46another good example of what roy was talking about as morales waited there for referee lawrence
00:31:50cold to pull zaragoza off of it here we go again
00:32:05right now the fight is slow but daniel is doing all the inside punching this is how he wins rounds
00:32:09before you know it he'll be up eight rounds or two like larry said and he'll be winning the fight yes
00:32:14and morales will say tomorrow if that's the case that the judges gave too much credit to zaragoza but
00:32:20their referee roy call i mean lawrence cold ruining warning zaragoza against holding and hitting i believe
00:32:29actually i think he's hitting on the break oh that was a body shot that hurt morales that body
00:32:33shot hurt morales bad and zaragoza knows it and you can see morales tailing to throw punches now
00:32:39as zaragoza bull rushes in yeah because those body shots are weakening him body shots take a lot
00:32:44out of a fighter and this is what is happening to eric right now halfway through his schedule 12 and as
00:32:49the seconds stick away in round six morales is trying to stay away from daniel zaragoza and then
00:32:55he landed one hard counter right detains the fight one more time this is a boxing after dog fight it sure is
00:33:09what's going on close your eyes i'm going to put something on vaseline
00:33:31who called that guy
00:33:32you see as morales has decided to go at zaragoza they collide
00:33:52a warning to zaragoza which he rightfully ignores
00:33:58and i think you're right roy i think that warning was for hitting on the break yeah because
00:34:01uh stop the young guy's waiting on the referee to come and get him and daniel wants to continue
00:34:07fighting he believes in fight to the referee gets there to separate you harold you think that
00:34:13a point should have been deducted for the headbutt it's very hairy let me explain the rule jim
00:34:18in the wbc they take the point from the uncut fighter on an accidental headbutt in that instance
00:34:24you saw daniel zaragoza cut on his forehead by an accidental headbutt right i asked lawrence
00:34:30call about point deductions he said no cut occurred and he didn't deduct any points even though there
00:34:36was an accidental head cut uh headbutt and you did see a cut on zaragoza's forehead tiny cut more
00:34:42like a blood blister exactly it was a very gray area i go elected not to take a point yeah i think
00:34:48he made the right call harold i think so also so why are we talking about it so much
00:35:03eric dorado seems to be catching a second wind now he's making a jab again
00:35:06and daniel seems to be taking a breather
00:35:17round seven a little bit slower than its predecessor round six was a whirlwind
00:35:22both guys doing some damage there's that looping left hand for zaragoza and there's a straight left
00:35:27hand shot for eric morales as he stepped in
00:35:32he's definitely definitely a lot quicker than zaragoza if he can use his quickness and outsmart
00:35:37zaragoza it seems as though he could outbox him
00:35:41but the one thing he's not doing is once he lands that quick jab he's doing right there
00:35:45and that allows daniel to answer with his own punches
00:35:50so frequently zaragoza will land those looping punches to travel long distances and you wonder
00:35:55how could the guy not get away from that but he does it with uncanny regularity
00:35:59well he steps in so far that when they think they're out of the rate the way they're right
00:36:03in the range of that long slow punch it seems like it should be there already but it's just
00:36:07now getting there when they get where they think they're out of the way so it's the deceiving first
00:36:12step that does it for right it's kind of like a fool griffin i fooled him like i was going to throw
00:36:16this quick left hook but it was actually a delayed left uppercut and he was out of range for the left
00:36:22look so the left hook was not what i was throwing i got you
00:36:32you think the punch is over already and then it says hello
00:36:38except in griffin's case it said hello and goodbye good night
00:36:43round seven of a scheduled 12. daniel zaragoza lands a straight left hand which is the biggest
00:36:50punch it this particular round able to counter with the left when eric morales releases the right
00:37:06harrell letterman seven rounds your score larry 67 66 four rounds to three eric el terrible morales
00:37:21i thought this kid is boxing a very nice fight in round six and seven to forge ahead he waits for
00:37:26morales to rush him he waits for he he waits for zaragoza to rush him he waits for zaragoza to
00:37:32lunge in and then he picks him off with that left jab bing bing bing bing that constant left jab
00:37:37for zaragoza's face is what's winning this fight for eric morales he's boxing a very controlled fight
00:37:42i think he's in control at this point well i gave the last round to zaragoza who landed four or five clean
00:37:49left hooks which i thought added up to a lot more than those jabs from morales i have it four rounds to
00:37:55three for zaragoza hard fight to score harold would you be surprised to see a wide disparity among the
00:38:01scorecards here no not at all jim it's an easy fight to score i think these rounds are pretty
00:38:05decisive but it is a close fight at this point round eight begins you saw the uncanny number for
00:38:13zaragoza landing single figures and jabs having thrown nearly 150 of them in the first seven rounds
00:38:19of the bout but obviously he's just using it to set up those wild looping punches which have done the
00:38:24damage for him morales seems to be getting a little stronger now and if he is then this is bad news to
00:38:30zaragoza because he's already faster than zaragoza and if he tightens up on his punches and stays
00:38:35set he can catch zaragoza with a lot of cameras could morales do a better job of getting to zaragoza's
00:38:39body he had said that he planned to do that but i haven't seen enough no because he's standing so
00:38:44straight up anytime zaragoza comes in he straightens right up and you can't hit a man's body from where
00:38:50he's standing he has to get his head a little lower to throw at zaragoza's body tactical error you like
00:38:55what he's doing well i like what he's doing but i think that after he lands the punch he should use
00:38:59his feet to get out of the weight of the rushing daniel daniel's coming straight ahead he knows
00:39:03when daniel is coming so after you count him move out the way don't let him hit you back if he used
00:39:07his feet better could he set up a left hook to the body he could set up a left hook to the body a
00:39:11right hand to the body and he can definitely catch him with a straight right after he lunges with that
00:39:15big punch right there oh zaragoza again with the looping right hand over the top after morales had
00:39:23relaxed in the clinch it doesn't bother morales well let's face it zaragoza doesn't have a ton of
00:39:30punching power neither does morales let's face it but zaragoza doesn't stop coming morales is throwing
00:39:38some very good punches at zaragoza and zaragoza constantly is on the attack
00:39:43hard right hand off a one two by morales a little test of zaragoza's chin there that's what i'm
00:39:53talking about this kid still has a load of power and this is not going to be good for dan and zaragoza
00:39:59with a legendary beard but in serious trouble here let's see if morales can finish
00:40:04it and here comes zaragoza right at him zaragoza one of the great survivors
00:40:12in modern ring history comes back immediately
00:40:21zaragoza bleeding over the left eye morales landing the right hand at will
00:40:28zaragoza looks about 69 right now i think he's finished i don't think he's going to make it out of
00:40:33the round of the round morales target practice but can't find the bullseye and now here comes
00:40:40daniel zaragoza 39 years old chasing is appointed across the ring
00:40:49amazing recuperation by zaragoza he's going to get out of the eight
00:40:54three three three
00:41:00boxing after dark he doesn't get in the building this dude
00:41:14zaragoza don't fight him that way you're trying to chase too many punches
00:41:21those arranques when he comes at you like that counter him you got to control yourself
00:41:35there you see early in the round before morales went on the attack
00:41:51here is Morales as part of the round
00:41:56Zaragoza
00:41:59trying to let him punch himself out
00:42:01on the rope
00:42:03how much did Morales take out of Zaragoza in the eighth
00:42:06he landed 36 of 52 power shots
00:42:09and you heard Harold Letterman
00:42:10talking about how it's a close fight
00:42:12many times a close fight is decided
00:42:14when one guy gets a 10-8 round
00:42:16and that almost had to be
00:42:18a 10-8 round for Morales
00:42:20Morales has found it with this uppercut
00:42:42loading the uppercut
00:42:44waiting for Zaragoza to come in
00:42:46and Daniel gave it to him
00:42:48he's doing a very good body shot at Daniel B&G
00:42:51that was very small
00:42:52Zaragoza lands a straight right hand
00:42:55and comes back to the body
00:42:56it's going to be a warning to finish here
00:43:00now Morales is getting low like he should
00:43:09in order to throw the body shot
00:43:10great right hand
00:43:17and landed for Morales
00:43:18Zaragoza holding on
00:43:21I think there was a group
00:43:33a music group called the Survivors or something
00:43:36the sole Survivors
00:43:37yeah the sole Survivors
00:43:39Zaragoza should have been the mascot
00:43:40goodnight expressway to your heart
00:43:42it's before you were born Roy
00:43:44it must have been in Daniel's time
00:43:48oh it was definitely in Daniel's time
00:43:50he was almost a pro before you were born
00:43:54you hear the crowd chanting
00:44:00for Zaragoza Zaragoza
00:44:03one thing Zaragoza got away from
00:44:09is he isn't hitting Morales' body anymore
00:44:12like he was
00:44:12well he could have given Morales time to recover from that one
00:44:34but he said box and they came back in
00:44:36wasn't too hard of a shot I don't think
00:44:39I guess Eric was okay
00:44:40he didn't seem to protest
00:44:42so much concentration at this moment
00:44:45as both guys try to avoid the other's onslaught
00:44:49I think both guys are a little weary-armed right now
00:44:54yeah
00:44:54temporarily punched out
00:44:56I think we're going to see some more action in round 10 though
00:44:59I know we are
00:45:00don't stop now
00:45:12okay you got him now
00:45:14you got to put your teeth in there
00:45:16you got to take it to him
00:45:19you better do it now
00:45:26do it now you'll be surprised later
00:45:28here's Morales
00:45:32as he stung Zaragoza with two right hands
00:45:36fighting a
00:45:39a tremendously experienced fighter
00:45:42he is showing some real nice poise
00:45:4521 year old son of a former professional fighter
00:45:49you can see him here relaxing
00:45:52he's taking some punishment
00:45:54but he knows that he can deal with anything
00:45:57that Zaragoza is dealing out with
00:46:00Eric Morales says
00:46:03that he thinks in Zaragoza's recent fights
00:46:05particularly against Wayne McCullough
00:46:07that he got too much credit from the judges
00:46:09in the late rounds
00:46:10and that he doesn't land defective punches
00:46:12at this stage of the battle
00:46:13Zaragoza said
00:46:15I'll show him
00:46:15now Zaragoza's going back to the body
00:46:22like he should have been
00:46:23in the last two rounds
00:46:24too late
00:46:25maybe
00:46:26and now Morales is fighting on the inside
00:46:33like a man he has to be
00:46:34neither man was able to land much to the body
00:46:39in the early rounds
00:46:40when it might have
00:46:41accrued a lot of damage
00:46:43but both have been getting their shots in
00:46:45since the middle rounds of the fight
00:46:47Zaragoza seems to be very very tired
00:46:54at this point
00:46:54Zaragoza insisting before the fight
00:46:57that if he loses tonight
00:46:59he will in fact finally retire
00:47:01not everyone around him believes that
00:47:08that was a good body shot
00:47:09right hand over the top for Morales
00:47:16not much steam in that punch
00:47:18and remember he had taken that hard body shot
00:47:21just moments before
00:47:22Zaragoza cut over the left eye
00:47:27cut under the left eyebrow
00:47:29cut under the left eye
00:47:30but unbothered by all of that
00:47:32he looks like he may be just a little bit more tired
00:47:38and a little slower than he did
00:47:39in the fight against Wayne McCullough
00:47:41at this point
00:47:41maybe that age is starting to show up
00:47:44just a little
00:47:44well he was more commanding against McCullough
00:47:46and I think Morales has landed
00:47:48harder punches against him
00:47:49yeah
00:47:49Morales is definitely a stronger puncher
00:47:52than McCullough
00:47:52McCullough landed the punch
00:47:54but not as much heavy artillery
00:47:56as Morales has been able to put in
00:47:57and that heavy artillery
00:48:00will definitely take it out of you
00:48:02but Daniel is still fighting like a game used to
00:48:06oh good right hand
00:48:09and another right hand
00:48:12and Morales is tattooing Zaragoza
00:48:15who elects to go down and take a knee
00:48:17a buddy shot
00:48:19made him make that decision
00:48:22and if this becomes another 10-8 round
00:48:24it would be awfully tough for Daniel Zaragoza
00:48:27to win a decision in this fight
00:48:29so Zaragoza knows he has to try to make a big statement
00:48:35in the closing seconds of the 10th
00:48:38to avoid another 10-8 round on the scorecards
00:48:41this is a 10-8 round Jim
00:48:44because he went down
00:48:45clearly
00:48:47it's the automatic of a 10-8 round
00:48:49and deservedly so
00:48:53as Morales pounds away
00:48:55huge effort by the 21-year-old
00:49:00and Zaragoza slaps his glove
00:49:03and congratulations
00:49:04again
00:49:17throwing the body
00:49:18you did well
00:49:19the fight is yours
00:49:22the fight is yours
00:49:23you gotta throw it
00:49:24with a hollow heart
00:49:26watch as Morales
00:49:33now
00:49:34showing youth
00:49:36patience
00:49:37the body punch
00:49:39that right hand
00:49:40made
00:49:42Zaragoza
00:49:43take an account
00:49:45that was a well chosen body shot
00:49:50by Morales
00:49:50and you heard assistant trainer
00:49:53Miguel Diaz
00:49:53going at Morales
00:49:55in the corner between rounds
00:49:56challenging him
00:49:57it's your fight
00:49:58don't let it out of your control
00:50:00as Zaragoza said
00:50:03El Paso is a good town
00:50:06to die in
00:50:07meaning to end his career
00:50:09we'll see whether
00:50:11he can breathe some life
00:50:13into himself
00:50:14in these last two rounds
00:50:15long night in a border town
00:50:17for the man who has spent
00:50:18his career
00:50:19fighting all over the world
00:50:21these are going to be
00:50:22two of the longest rounds
00:50:24of his career
00:50:2420 second title fight
00:50:31for Daniel Zaragoza
00:50:32he's seen it all
00:50:34and then some
00:50:34you'll need a miracle
00:50:36in the last couple of rounds
00:50:38it now appears
00:50:39to avert defeat
00:50:40at the hands of
00:50:41young Eric Morales
00:50:42the body shots
00:50:48have been ripping
00:50:49Zaragoza apart
00:50:50these last couple of rounds
00:50:52but the courage
00:50:53stays intact
00:50:54the heart is still there
00:50:55yeah he wants to go out
00:50:57like a champion
00:50:58muchos huevos
00:51:07in this fight
00:51:08no knockdown
00:51:13says goal
00:51:14most of the crowd
00:51:22pulling for the Zaragoza comeback
00:51:24another hard right hand
00:51:28uppercut by
00:51:29Eric Morales
00:51:30that person's been
00:51:31getting to Daniel
00:51:32all night
00:51:33from about the
00:51:34seventh round on
00:51:35virtually every uppercut
00:51:37seems to have landed
00:51:38a lot of them
00:51:38with authority
00:51:39Eric Morales
00:51:44very calm
00:51:45as he closes in
00:51:47on the biggest victory
00:51:48of his professional career
00:51:4926-0
00:51:51is the young man
00:51:52whose father
00:51:53didn't want him
00:51:54to follow in his footsteps
00:51:55and become a pro fighter
00:51:56he can't get careless
00:51:58here though
00:51:59well if ever a fighter
00:52:08had the presence
00:52:09to play possum
00:52:10it might be Zaragoza
00:52:11but he is hurting badly
00:52:13from the body punishment
00:52:14and the uppercut
00:52:15in these past couple of rounds
00:52:17yes he is
00:52:17but I don't really think
00:52:18Zaragoza can hurt Morales
00:52:19because when he hit him
00:52:20with his good shots
00:52:21earlier in the fight
00:52:21it had no effect
00:52:23on Morales
00:52:24that's true
00:52:25we'll find out
00:52:31if he keeps
00:52:31planning like that
00:52:32this kid Morales
00:52:44has fought a very intelligent fight
00:52:46tonight
00:52:46oh
00:52:46great right hand
00:52:51to the body
00:52:526
00:52:537
00:52:548
00:52:559
00:52:5710
00:52:58this really isn't
00:53:01the sad death
00:53:02of a king
00:53:03so much
00:53:03as the passing
00:53:04of the torch
00:53:05to a new generation
00:53:07Daniel Zaragoza
00:53:23totally unable
00:53:24to handle the body shots
00:53:25of Eric Morales
00:53:27and Morales
00:53:28once he found a way
00:53:30to Zaragoza's ribcage
00:53:31in the 10th and 11th rounds
00:53:33Morales was able
00:53:34to put the fight away
00:53:35yes he was
00:53:36that was a superb performance
00:53:37by a young
00:53:38very very smart fighter
00:53:40how would you rate Morales
00:53:43against the likes
00:53:44of Junior Jones
00:53:47and Barrera
00:53:47well I think
00:53:49he needs a little bit
00:53:49more experience
00:53:50to fight a fighter
00:53:51such as Junior Jones
00:53:51Junior Jones right now
00:53:53is the best
00:53:53people of Bantamweight
00:53:54out right now
00:53:55he's very strong
00:53:56he's fast
00:53:57he's experienced
00:53:57and he's the type
00:53:58of guy
00:53:59that you can't
00:53:59make mistakes
00:54:00and get caught
00:54:00with the big shots
00:54:01early
00:54:01what about
00:54:03Marco Antonio Barrera
00:54:04beaten twice
00:54:05by Junior Jones
00:54:06but invincible
00:54:07against other fighters
00:54:08that would be
00:54:09a good fight
00:54:09for Morales
00:54:10a very good fight
00:54:12for Morales
00:54:12I doubt seriously
00:54:14that they'll take it
00:54:15but there you see
00:54:16it was a right hand
00:54:17again to the body
00:54:18a vicious right hand
00:54:20and here's
00:54:21an interesting thing
00:54:22fellas
00:54:23the greatest champion
00:54:24the legend
00:54:25of all legends
00:54:26of Mexico
00:54:27Mexican fighters
00:54:28really is
00:54:31Ruben Olivares
00:54:33and Ruben Olivares
00:54:34is one of the men
00:54:36in the corner
00:54:36of Morales
00:54:38who has taught him
00:54:40to body punch
00:54:41yep
00:54:41he helped to inspire
00:54:43Morales for the fight
00:54:44and also
00:54:44worked technically
00:54:46with him
00:54:46to improve his attack
00:54:47to the body
00:54:48and that in the end
00:54:49was the difference
00:54:50in the bow
00:54:50that last straight right hand
00:54:52seemed to land
00:54:53right on the solar plexus
00:54:55let's go up to
00:54:56Michael Buffer now
00:54:57for the official
00:54:57particulars on
00:54:58Morales' championship
00:54:59victory
00:54:59ladies and gentlemen
00:55:00referee Lawrence
00:55:02calls a halt
00:55:03to the bow
00:55:04two minutes
00:55:0559 seconds
00:55:07of round
00:55:07number 11
00:55:08the winner by
00:55:09knockout victory
00:55:10and new
00:55:12WBC
00:55:13super phantom wave
00:55:14champion of the world
00:55:16Eric Morales'
00:55:17Eric Morales
00:55:192.59 of the 11th round
00:55:26Zaragosa could not
00:55:27incidentally
00:55:28have been saved
00:55:29by the bell
00:55:30if the count
00:55:31had extended
00:55:31beyond it
00:55:32first championship fight
00:55:43here in El Paso
00:55:44in more than
00:55:44seven years
00:55:45and what a brilliant
00:55:47bout it was
00:55:47how did you have it
00:55:48scored through 11
00:55:49Harold
00:55:49Jim
00:55:4996-92
00:55:51six rounds to four
00:55:53Eric Morales
00:55:53he had a commanding
00:55:55four point lead
00:55:56on my card
00:55:56going into the 11th
00:55:58there was no way
00:55:58Zaragosa could win
00:55:59this fight
00:56:00unless he scored a knockout
00:56:01and it was obvious to me
00:56:02he was in no position
00:56:03to score a knockout
00:56:04so had it gone
00:56:06through the 12 rounds
00:56:07in my mind
00:56:08there was no doubt
00:56:09that Eric Morales
00:56:10would have won the fight
00:56:10and now Larry Merchant
00:56:11stands by with the winner
00:56:13thank you fellas
00:56:15Eric
00:56:16congratulations
00:56:17you think your father
00:56:20will now let you
00:56:21be a prize fighter
00:56:22what won the fight
00:56:28for you tonight
00:56:29was it your youth
00:56:30were you being
00:56:31patient with him
00:56:32because you thought
00:56:33he would get tired
00:56:34in the later rounds
00:56:35who won the fight
00:56:36for you tonight
00:56:36your patience
00:56:37your youth
00:56:38or you thought
00:56:39he would get tired
00:56:40in the last
00:56:40I think my patience
00:56:42he would get tired
00:56:44of many shots
00:56:45and then he would
00:56:47count the punch in
00:56:48and then he would
00:56:51hit him to the corner
00:56:52real well
00:56:52and he always thought
00:56:58he was ahead
00:56:58on the card
00:56:58did he hurt you
00:57:01with any of those
00:57:02looping punches
00:57:03he's not a hard puncher
00:57:18it looked real hard
00:57:21but didn't hurt him
00:57:21because he's not
00:57:22really a good puncher
00:57:23I mentioned
00:57:25on the air
00:57:26during the late rounds
00:57:28that you had credited
00:57:29Ruben Olivares
00:57:31with helping you
00:57:32with the body punches
00:57:33was that the decisive
00:57:35factor for you tonight
00:57:36he mentioned
00:57:37that in the last round
00:57:39that Olivares
00:57:40was helping you
00:57:41because the man
00:57:42was tired
00:57:43that was
00:57:43the pain
00:57:44that helped you
00:57:45a lot
00:57:45I think
00:57:46that yes
00:57:47the pain
00:57:47it's all
00:57:49known
00:57:49it's known
00:57:50for the public
00:57:51for the people
00:57:52of the people
00:57:52of the boxing field
00:57:54and the people
00:57:54who see the television
00:57:55that Daniel Zaragoza
00:57:56in his last fights
00:57:57didn't have suffered
00:57:57the pain
00:57:58in the stomach
00:57:59much less
00:58:00in the last round
00:58:01we knew
00:58:05because Zaragoza
00:58:06in the last few fights
00:58:07was getting weaker
00:58:08in the last round
00:58:09and we figured
00:58:10if we go to the body
00:58:10we would stop him
00:58:11thank you very much
00:58:13and congratulations
00:58:13again
00:58:14all right Jim
00:58:16back to you
00:58:16all right Larry
00:58:18let's quickly take a look
00:58:19at a punch stat profile
00:58:20of what happened
00:58:20in the bout
00:58:21CompuBox telling us
00:58:22that in total punches
00:58:23Morales threw
00:58:2540 more than Zaragoza
00:58:26he landed
00:58:27122 punches
00:58:29more than Zaragoza
00:58:30huge margin
00:58:31in connect percentage
00:58:32and the overwhelming
00:58:33bulk of that margin
00:58:35came in power punches
00:58:36yet nevertheless
00:58:37going into
00:58:38the last two rounds
00:58:39Zaragoza had a chance
00:58:41to win the fight
00:58:42on the scorecards
00:58:43in fact as you look
00:58:44at jabs in the bout
00:58:45it's pretty stunning
00:58:46that Zaragoza
00:58:47landing only 13
00:58:49out of 185 jabs
00:58:50was within a point
00:58:51on one of the three
00:58:52scorecards
00:58:53was ahead by two points
00:58:55on the scorecard
00:58:56of veteran judge
00:58:57Tommy Kaczmarek
00:58:57and still had a chance
00:58:59had he pulled out
00:59:00those last two rounds
00:59:01to salvage the bout
00:59:02pretty stunning
00:59:03to this observer's eyes
00:59:05let's go back
00:59:05to Larry Merchant
00:59:06with the loser
00:59:07Daniel Zaragoza
00:59:08was he stronger
00:59:14than you suspected
00:59:15much quicker
00:59:21and good technician
00:59:24and did you run
00:59:25out of gas
00:59:26at the end
00:59:26and was that
00:59:27why he was able
00:59:28to hurt you
00:59:28to the body
00:59:29yeah definitely
00:59:43at the end
00:59:44he got me real good
00:59:45I was trying to weaken
00:59:46him and get him
00:59:46from the beginning
00:59:47but I wasn't able
00:59:48to put him away
00:59:48early
00:59:49he challenged him
00:59:54is this the end
00:59:56of the road
00:59:56then Daniel Zaragoza
00:59:57definitivamente si
01:00:00definitivamente si
01:00:02hoy me faltó
01:00:03un poco de pierna
01:00:03de brazo
01:00:04mañana me va a faltar
01:00:05un poco más
01:00:06de las dos
01:00:06today he needed
01:00:07the legs weren't there
01:00:08and the punch
01:00:09was in there
01:00:09tomorrow will be worse
01:00:10I think this is it
01:00:11you have certainly
01:00:13given your heart
01:00:14and your passion
01:00:15to this game
01:00:17all of these years
01:00:18can you have
01:00:20nothing left
01:00:21after giving so much
01:00:22you have given so much
01:00:23in your career
01:00:25your passion
01:00:26your heart
01:00:27that you left
01:00:28something
01:00:29or no you left
01:00:29anything
01:00:30something of what
01:00:31of value
01:00:32of heart
01:00:33of energy
01:00:34you think
01:00:35that is the last
01:00:38right
01:00:38with all the respect
01:00:40that you deserve
01:00:41I am a whole man
01:00:42and I feel capable
01:00:44but the logic
01:00:46tells me
01:00:47go
01:00:48logic says to leave
01:00:50he would love to stay
01:00:51because he's still
01:00:51a warrior
01:00:52he still can do
01:00:54go on
01:00:54but it doesn't seem
01:00:55like at his age
01:00:56it's as large
01:00:57for him to leave
01:00:58now
01:00:58thank you for being
01:01:00you
01:01:01Daniel
01:01:02thanks to the boxing world
01:01:08Jim
01:01:09all right Larry
01:01:10not always easy
01:01:11to tell
01:01:12but I think
01:01:12all right Larry
01:01:13not always easy
01:01:14to tell
01:01:14but I think
01:01:15he retired there
01:01:16and certainly
01:01:16he's got nothing
01:01:17left to prove
01:01:18in the sport
01:01:18no he has nothing
01:01:19left to prove
01:01:20I think
01:01:21for him to stick around
01:01:22he would probably
01:01:22kind of diminish
01:01:23his name some
01:01:24he went out like
01:01:25a great champion
01:01:25he fought
01:01:26he showed his game
01:01:27he doesn't have
01:01:28anything else to prove
01:01:29to no one
01:01:29he should go ahead
01:01:30retire
01:01:31enjoy his career
01:01:32he's had a remarkable
01:01:33career
01:01:33and I think
01:01:35his time has come
01:01:35and Harold Letterman
01:01:37said he didn't think
01:01:38it was that difficult
01:01:38to fight the score
01:01:39but I think
01:01:40it must have been
01:01:40difficult for the
01:01:41three judges
01:01:42let's take a look
01:01:42at what those
01:01:43scorecards showed
01:01:44I mentioned it
01:01:45once before
01:01:46and now I'm told
01:01:47that the graphic
01:01:47isn't ready
01:01:48but just to recap
01:01:49one more time
01:01:50in case you missed it
01:01:51on the three judges
01:01:52scorecards
01:01:52officially at ringside
01:01:54Zaragoza still had
01:01:55a chance to win the fight
01:01:56going into the 11th round
01:01:57he was even leading
01:01:57by two points
01:01:58on the scorecard
01:01:59of Tommy Kazmarek
01:02:00and you know
01:02:00these boxing matches
01:02:02are totally subjective
01:02:03aren't they
01:02:03totally
01:02:04sometimes though
01:02:05when you're watching
01:02:06a fight at ringside
01:02:07the guy is so much
01:02:08more busier
01:02:09or it seems
01:02:09that he's much busier
01:02:11than he really is
01:02:12and that's where
01:02:13Daniel Zaragoza gives
01:02:14a lot of nods
01:02:15from the judges
01:02:15he always knows
01:02:16how to impress the judges
01:02:18he goes out
01:02:19he doesn't really be doing
01:02:20he's not really doing
01:02:21a lot of punching
01:02:22he's not powerful
01:02:24but he's getting
01:02:25the job done
01:02:25he's always active
01:02:27he's busy
01:02:27he has the guys running
01:02:29he's inside pounding
01:02:30on the rib cage
01:02:31so these things add up
01:02:32in some people's eyes
01:02:33so people view
01:02:34fights differently
01:02:34I take it as good
01:02:35as Morales look tonight
01:02:36you think that he would
01:02:37have to punch a little harder
01:02:38and defend himself
01:02:39a little better
01:02:40to have a chance
01:02:40against the likes
01:02:41of Junior Jones
01:02:42or Marco Antonio Barrera
01:02:43well he doesn't really
01:02:44have to punch harder
01:02:44but he does have to
01:02:45work on his defense
01:02:46people like Junior Jones
01:02:47he can't let hit you
01:02:48with the shots
01:02:49that he let Daniel Zaragoza
01:02:50catch him with tonight
01:02:51if Junior lands
01:02:52a right hand like that
01:02:53it usually means trouble
01:02:54probably because his last name
01:02:55is Jones or something
01:02:56though I'm not sure
01:02:57congratulations
01:02:58on a great job
01:02:59again tonight
01:03:00thanks very much
01:03:00for being with us
01:03:01Roy Jones Jr.
01:03:02World Light Heavyweight Champion
01:03:03your final thoughts
01:03:05Larry Merchant
01:03:05on a momentous evening
01:03:07in boxing
01:03:07if in fact
01:03:08it was Daniel Zaragoza's
01:03:09last prize fight
01:03:10Jim I think there's
01:03:12a special place
01:03:13in all of our hearts
01:03:15in heaven really
01:03:17for those people
01:03:18whether they are
01:03:19princesses
01:03:21or prize fighters
01:03:22who play the hand
01:03:24that's dealt them
01:03:25the best way possible
01:03:27who take all the risks
01:03:29who grow before our eyes
01:03:31Daniel Zaragoza
01:03:33is a remarkable
01:03:35old fellow
01:03:36who gave everything
01:03:37he had to the game
01:03:38he says he's going to retire
01:03:40I believe him
01:03:41I hope so
01:03:42I believe him too
01:03:43and it was another
01:03:45great night for
