The Northern Territory's public education system budgets 14 million dollars for 'Explicit Teaching' practice

The Northern Territory's public education system is set to undergo a transformation as it adopts a new teaching approach across all its schools. The evidence based practise is hoped to bring Territory kids literacy and numeracy skills up to scratch.

00:00School is in session and it's coming with new lessons.

00:06$14.2 million from our government is committed to boosting literacy and numeracy.

00:13And we know that all students, it is vital that they get the strong foundations that they need for their education journey.

00:21The explicit teaching approach will be rolled out across all Northern Territory public schools.

00:27It's a structured, evidence-based practice based on how children form neural pathways.

00:33So explicit teaching is really paired back to what is it that we want the students to learn,

00:39demonstrating it clearly, helping them work through it themselves before they're released to attempt it independently.

00:46The approach is reaching classrooms around the country with positive results already.

00:51And there's faith it will succeed in the NT, despite the Territory's unique challenges and circumstances.

00:57It will work for students from non-English speaking backgrounds.

01:01It will work for children who are First Nations.

01:03It will work for children who may become from disadvantaged economic backgrounds.

01:08The reason it works is because it is designed for the way humans are designed to learn.

01:16The teachers' union are on board, but are wary of its delivery.

01:21If it's not packaged right, it comes across as a bunch of scripts that is delivered to a teacher,

01:26and the teacher's told, you need to teach off this script, you need to follow those routines,

01:30and you can't change anything.

01:32And then that takes away from the professionalism and the expertise of that teacher.

01:36They say most teachers in the NT are already explicitly teaching, but need more support in their roles.

01:43Something that's promised to come as part of the $14 million funding package.

01:48Over the next six months we'll be providing professional development and professional learning opportunities

01:53for our teachers across the Northern Territory.
