00:00:00Hutchison at the one, gets hammered by Mosita Tupu at the 15-yard line so the Buffalo Bills
00:00:11put it in play first and ten.
00:00:17The offensive lineup for the Buffalo Bills, Vince Ferragamo taking over for Joe Ferguson
00:00:21who is sent to Detroit, and Mike Pruitt, who was acquired this week on waivers from the
00:00:25Cleveland Browns, will be starting at fullback in the place of Booker Moore.
00:00:34Offensive line, solid but not flashy, Ken Jones in for the inch of Justin Cross at left
00:00:39tackle.
00:00:40First and ten from the 15 for the Bills.
00:00:41This is Mike Pruitt, and he loses about a yard.
00:00:54Number 90, Toby Williams, and number 57, Steve Nelson, over to make the twin tackles
00:00:59for the Patriots.
00:01:00Their defensive line, Toby Williams on the right end, Ken Sims on the left side, and
00:01:05Dennis Owens, who started all 16 games last season in the middle.
00:01:09Their linebackers, Tiffin Blackman on the outside, and Nelson McGrew, starting back
00:01:14this week on the inside with Lippitt, Claiborne, James, and Fred Marion in the backfield.
00:01:19First and ten, Greg Bell, and he gets five.
00:01:28Fred Marion getting off the bottom of the pile.
00:01:30Well, you have to already see that Buffalo has come out to run the ball.
00:01:33They gave the ball first time to Mike Pruitt.
00:01:35That's quite a lot of confidence in a young player on this team, a new player on this
00:01:39team, and they've come right back with Bell, so they're going to try to run on this Patriot
00:01:43team before can this Patriot team play defense.
00:01:47They really had a terrific week against the Bears.
00:01:49It was their offense that stalled.
00:01:52The Buffalo Bills now facing third and four at the twenty-one, with four wide receivers.
00:01:59And Ferragamo from the shotgun, caught and a first down at the thirty-four yard line.
00:02:08Mitchell Brookins, the receiver, Ronnie Lippitt defending a twelve-yard pickup.
00:02:13Boy, that was really close to an interception.
00:02:16Don Blackman, number fifty-five, you'll see how close he comes into this play.
00:02:20He almost makes the interception.
00:02:22Watch how quick he closes.
00:02:23Right there, just a hand away.
00:02:25That's the difference in this game so far.
00:02:31Will Grant, number fifty-three, leads him out of the huddle from Milton, Massachusetts.
00:02:40First and ten from the thirty-four for Ferragamo.
00:02:44Second time for Eric Richardson, but it's overthrown at the forty-five yard line with
00:02:49Lippitt on the cover.
00:02:53We talked about the predictability of the Patriots offense, but the Bills haven't had
00:02:57any offense either, Bob.
00:02:58They have not scored this year.
00:03:00They just haven't driven the ball well, so they have got to establish this running game
00:03:04early.
00:03:05They have got to be able to control the ball game early if they want to stay in this game.
00:03:09There are only two teams in the National Football League that have not scored touchdowns this
00:03:13season, the Buffalo Bills and the Philadelphia Eagles.
00:03:16It is second and ten from the thirty-four.
00:03:23Play action.
00:03:27Raymond Claiborne behind Eric Richardson as the pass is way overthrown.
00:03:33It sure was.
00:03:34It was way over his head.
00:03:35It kind of floated away on Ferragamo.
00:03:37If anything, he has got to throw that ball in there with a little more steam.
00:03:40He's trying to float it over a defender here.
00:03:42You see the ball just kind of tails off and is way overthrown, but he has got to drill
00:03:46that ball in there and he's got to get some confidence early to be competitive in this
00:03:49game.
00:03:50The Patriots bring in their nickel package, third and ten at the Buffalo thirty-four.
00:03:58I say about being competitive, he has got to have that confidence because he already
00:04:01has six interceptions already this season.
00:04:03That's not a typical year for a quarterback.
00:04:07Four wide receivers put out for the Buffalo Bills on third and ten.
00:04:13Ferragamo to run, but only for three.
00:04:17Well, an interesting thing happened that time as we watched Ferragamo get up.
00:04:21There's a new rule this year about quarterbacks and the way they go down.
00:04:24If they slide feet first, it's a gimme and you're not allowed to touch them, but what
00:04:29happened on that play as we watched Tip at number fifty-six, who is probably one of their
00:04:33near-rushers, is that Ferragamo, in his scramble, dove for the first down.
00:04:37He was trying to get first down yardage, but of course he was short.
00:04:42The other outside linebacker, Don Blackman, number fifty-five, up to make the stop on
00:04:46Ferragamo on four and two.
00:04:47John Kidd to kick to Irving Fryer, who's pushed back to his twelve.
00:04:53Fryer out to the thirty-four yard line.
00:05:00A nice return for Irving Fryer.
00:05:04What they did that time, Bob, is they actually, it was a fifty-two yard punch.
00:05:09He returned to twenty-two yards because he outkicked his coverage.
00:05:14We're three minutes into this football game.
00:05:16Buffalo and the New England Patriots, there is no score.
00:05:21Have you driven a four?
00:05:23...tracked after a string of wrong injuries.
00:05:31The Tupou and Collins are the running backs behind Tony Eason.
00:05:34And this is Tony Collins.
00:05:36Out across the thirty to the thirty-two, where he's stuffed by the Buffalo defense.
00:05:41Jim Haslett and Eugene Marv.
00:05:43Marv seeing his first action this year.
00:05:45What a story.
00:05:46Marv has come back from an injury.
00:05:47He's been out, and he's replaced Steve Madlow, number ninety.
00:05:50Number fifty-four, as we look at the defensive line.
00:05:52And that's a good defensive line.
00:05:53Of course, with the replacement of Don Smith to Bruce Smith.
00:05:56There's the linebackers.
00:05:57Another good linebacking crew.
00:05:59They've got some players, if they can just put it all together.
00:06:02Veteran Charles Romes.
00:06:05Rod Hill at the corners.
00:06:06This is Derek Ramsey in motion.
00:06:09And this is Tony Collins, trying the left side and being run out of bounds.
00:06:15Marv and Talley, along with Steve Freeman.
00:06:18Now, we talked about John Hanna being the impact that he has.
00:06:21He is a tremendous player.
00:06:23I remember playing over there.
00:06:24He was number seventy-three.
00:06:25When he comes off the ball, there is nobody in this league that's stronger.
00:06:28Haslett does a good job in standing him up.
00:06:30But John Hanna, his leg is right.
00:06:32And that's what we'll have to watch today.
00:06:34Had a torn calf muscle.
00:06:35It's really going to be important to see whether he can go full go.
00:06:38You never know what it's like until you're out there going full blast.
00:06:43Third down and seven at the thirty-four for Tony Eason.
00:06:48Derek Ramsey with a first down and a fumble.
00:06:56Oh, is this going to be an interesting call?
00:06:58He came down with the ball.
00:07:00And it's going to be interesting.
00:07:01He had a first down.
00:07:02And it's going to be wild to see whether the referees mark a first down.
00:07:07He had the first down when he fumbled.
00:07:09But the ball went back beyond the first down markers.
00:07:13Now comes the story whether they're going to...
00:07:15Yes, they are.
00:07:16They're going to mark the ball.
00:07:17Tony Ramsey has passed the line.
00:07:19He has a first down.
00:07:20There comes the ball out.
00:07:21The ball rolls back out behind the first down marker.
00:07:24So it brings up a fourth down.
00:07:26There's the catch again.
00:07:27What a tremendous catch by Derek Ramsey.
00:07:29Great height.
00:07:30Great basketball player.
00:07:31And there goes the ball.
00:07:32Bouncing out behind the first down marker.
00:07:36The hit was applied by rookie Derek Burrows.
00:07:40Now Rich Camarillo stands in his own twenty-four to Rod Hill.
00:07:45Hill pushed back to the element.
00:07:50Jim Bowman down to make the solo tackle.
00:07:54But a penalty marker has been thrown on the play.
00:07:57There's going to be a clip.
00:07:58Anytime that referee throws the flag, it's a clip.
00:08:01A 51-yard punt.
00:08:02Great coverage this time.
00:08:03That was the difference in the first punt.
00:08:05They didn't out-kick their coverage this time.
00:08:07They really got down there.
00:08:08Bowman, number 28, made the tackle.
00:08:10He really covered ground in a hurry.
00:08:12But this clip is going to put Buffalo way back.
00:08:14They're inside the ten already.
00:08:16And this penalty is going to take them half the distance back.
00:08:18Jim Bowman is the man that Raymond Berry said is a terrific football player.
00:08:26Scored as high as any special teams player they've had
00:08:29in last week's game against the Bears.
00:08:31Well, there's something that's happened that I'm not familiar with.
00:08:34They brought the ball back.
00:08:36They're calling the penalty.
00:08:37I've evidently watched for the referee's call.
00:08:41I thought it was a clip on the play.
00:08:44In Ellsworth downfield, number 28, kicking team.
00:08:50Illegal block.
00:08:52During the return, receiving team.
00:08:54Offsetting penalties.
00:08:56Caught down.
00:08:57Well, I can't...
00:08:59I'm an old defensive lineman, and I'm supposed to make mistakes like that, I guess.
00:09:03But I did see the clip.
00:09:04I didn't see the lineman downfield.
00:09:06That penalty right there could really hurt New England
00:09:08because they had him inside the ten-yard line.
00:09:10Well, Jim Bowman, the man who made the solo tackle in the special teams,
00:09:13the man guilty of jumping the gun at the line.
00:09:15So Camarillo is back once again.
00:09:17All that was for naught.
00:09:19We have 10.58 left to play in the first quarter.
00:09:21There's no score, and Camarillo once again will punt to Rod Hill.
00:09:28Low driving.
00:09:29Spiral.
00:09:30Hill, 15-yard line.
00:09:36And is slammed out of bounds by Greg Hawthorne.
00:09:40Forty-seven-yard punt by Camarillo that time,
00:09:43and an eight-yard return by Hill.
00:09:47So with no score and 10.47 left in the first quarter,
00:09:51we'll be right back with a man under the gun for the Buffalo Bills.
00:09:55You don't want to stand close to him just in case something happens.
00:09:58Two tight ends in for the Bills, Metzeler and Eason Ramson.
00:10:02And this is Ramson going in motion on first down and ten.
00:10:06Greg Bell gets the call.
00:10:08And he powers his way for about six yards.
00:10:11Fred Merriam, John Blackman.
00:10:15There's the Dallas jumping out in front of Cleveland
00:10:18on a 40-yard field goal by Raphael Septien.
00:10:24And Denver on top of Dan Henning and the Atlanta Falcons.
00:10:28A 63-yard pass from John Elway to Vance Johnson.
00:10:33Second down and four for the Buffalo Bills on the 29-yard line.
00:10:37No score.
00:10:44Broken play.
00:10:45Ferragamo trying to improvise and picks up maybe a yard.
00:10:49Don Blackman in on the stop.
00:10:53Well, that'll sure bring your nerves to a twinge
00:10:55when you see your quarterback turn around
00:10:57and there's no one to hand the ball off.
00:10:59And watch this. You'll see him turn around there.
00:11:01There's the misdirection play.
00:11:03He just has to turn around and become a running back with it.
00:11:07Too valuable a person to be running with the ball.
00:11:09Actually picked up a couple yards in that play.
00:11:12So it brings up a third down and two at the 31.
00:11:20In this situation, you almost have to go to Greg Bell.
00:11:23He is their premier running back here.
00:11:25They come out in a shotgun formation, which is a little bit different.
00:11:28Slot to the right.
00:11:30And they're going to throw on third and two.
00:11:34Incomplete.
00:11:35And that's going to bring a chorus of boos from this Buffalo crowd.
00:11:39Well, third down and two.
00:11:41If you want to be predictable, you're supposed to run the ball
00:11:43when you have a running back like Greg Bell, number 28.
00:11:45But they didn't. They had a little bit of pressure.
00:11:47There's Ken Sims, number 77.
00:11:49They say he is finally playing up to his potential.
00:11:51He's finally getting off the ball and reading better.
00:11:53And he does get some pressure.
00:11:55And that could distract Ferragamo, that hand up in his face.
00:11:58So John Kidd will have to kick it again.
00:12:01With 9.17 left in the first period, no score in this game
00:12:04in Rich Stadium in Orchard Park, New York.
00:12:07The Bills 0-2, the Patriots 1-1.
00:12:10Deep Irving Friar at the 23.
00:12:15High kick, pushing Friar back to the 18.
00:12:21And he dives forward to about the 28.
00:12:25And he dives forward to about the 28.
00:12:28Sean McNanny on special teams coverage for the Buffalo Bills
00:12:31making this stop.
00:12:3451-yard put, 10-yard return.
00:12:38The Bills have it.
00:12:40Well, what a great story, Raymond Berry.
00:12:42What a great talk we had last night with him
00:12:44as he took over an hour with us, Bob,
00:12:46just to kind of share his thoughts about the team.
00:12:48Said it was a pleasure to coach this team.
00:12:50And a team, in large part, is a reflection of their coach.
00:12:54That's the New England Patriots in 1985.
00:12:57Craig James cuts back.
00:13:00And brings it out to about the 42.
00:13:03Darryl Talley, again on the stop.
00:13:07As James makes a nice move.
00:13:10Great vision that time on James.
00:13:12He had to cut back underneath the flow.
00:13:14The defense on Buffalo was reacting very quickly to the ball.
00:13:17And he cut back underneath the flow of them
00:13:19and picked up about 8 or 9 yards.
00:13:21So it's going to bring up a good down.
00:13:23It's going to be the Stanley Steamer,
00:13:25number 86, first time back.
00:13:27Craig James, on two plays,
00:13:29has accounted for almost a fourth
00:13:31of the New England Patriot offense.
00:13:33A 65-yard run and a 90-yard touchdown catch
00:13:35against the Chicago Bears last week.
00:13:41Wide open, O-ring fryer, midfield.
00:13:46And a first down for the New England Patriots.
00:13:49Martin Bayless grabs Friar
00:13:52with the neck to bring him down.
00:13:54Well, we talked about the predictability
00:13:56with second down and two yards in the NFL.
00:13:58That's a favorite ploy.
00:14:00As the quarterback we watch here,
00:14:02Eason steps back, throws a 26-yard strike to Friar.
00:14:04This young man can really accelerate.
00:14:06But it's a favorite play.
00:14:08It's a predictable thing.
00:14:10Second down and two yards, you know you have third down.
00:14:12And most NFL teams will challenge
00:14:14the defense and pass in that situation.
00:14:16Lone back, Craig James, behind Tony Eason.
00:14:19On first and 10.
00:14:21And it is James getting the call.
00:14:24Inside the 35 and a marker is thrown immediately
00:14:27at the point of tackle.
00:14:29Don Smith, the right defensive end,
00:14:31who was a first-round pick in 1979,
00:14:33comes up to make the stop.
00:14:35Well, that could be a crucial penalty to New England
00:14:38because where it's thrown, it is almost always holding.
00:14:47And that's what he called,
00:14:49and it's going to set them back considerably.
00:14:52This is the first time they've been over the 50-yard line
00:14:55for very long, isn't it, compared to last week?
00:14:58That last reception by Irving Friar.
00:15:01Still first down.
00:15:03That's on Brian Holloway,
00:15:05who had surgery on his little finger earlier this week
00:15:08and was questionable for today's game.
00:15:11But that reception by Irving Friar of 26 yards
00:15:14equals his career high.
00:15:16We can see in that picture there,
00:15:19there's almost a cast molded on his fingers.
00:15:22You can see it there.
00:15:24Look at the fingers.
00:15:26That's awfully hard.
00:15:28It's almost like playing with a boxing glove.
00:15:31First down and 18 for the Patriots at the 45.
00:15:34Facing the Blitz is Tony Easton,
00:15:36and he's diagnosed with a screen.
00:15:38To Tony Collins.
00:15:40Collins gets close to a first down.
00:15:42Inside the 30 at the 27.
00:15:44Great call.
00:15:46Bob, you're right.
00:15:48He dropped back and slipped.
00:15:50It's called a slip screen.
00:15:52There's Holloway fighting off his player.
00:15:54He wants to just let him go.
00:15:56He'll let him go late.
00:15:58He's on the back side of the screen,
00:16:00so he has to protect a little bit.
00:16:02You can see him just pushing away.
00:16:04But the screen part of it really caught Buffalo by surprise.
00:16:07You can see how many red-shirt Patriots.
00:16:09There's Pete Brock, the center, number 58 out there.
00:16:11You can see the yardage that they picked up with that play.
00:16:14They spot him just shy of a first down
00:16:16James alone back gets the handoff
00:16:18and the first down.
00:16:20And about four more after that.
00:16:24There's no score.
00:16:26We've played.
00:16:28We have seven minutes left to go in the first quarter.
00:16:30Martin Bayless in on the stop.
00:16:34I talked about the vision that Craig James has.
00:16:37He has some amazing statistics about him
00:16:39when he played in high school.
00:16:41I was reading the press guide,
00:16:43and I just could not believe
00:16:46that he had 3,400 yards in a high school season.
00:16:48So he has tremendous vision
00:16:50and really great acceleration
00:16:52and can really get off the ball.
00:16:54And as you said, of course,
00:16:56has over a quarter of their offense so far this year.
00:16:58He's replaced by Moshe Tututu
00:17:00and a first and ten for the Patriots
00:17:02at the 23 of Buffalo.
00:17:04And this is Tony Collins trying the right side.
00:17:06Without much success.
00:17:08Hazlett, number 55.
00:17:10Eugene Marv, number 54.
00:17:12And Don Smith, number 74,
00:17:14off the bottom of that pile.
00:17:16When you play defensive line in this league
00:17:18like Fred Smerlis, number 76,
00:17:20you have got to get rid of the block.
00:17:22You just cannot let that blocker get the angle.
00:17:24Look how Pete Brock, number 58,
00:17:26turns Smerlis all the way around,
00:17:28gets position on him.
00:17:30That was not a good play by a very good player, Fred Smerlis.
00:17:34Second and ten for the Patriots,
00:17:36and the running play gets nothing.
00:17:38Live receivers to both sides.
00:17:40Ball on the 23.
00:17:44Lynn Dawson goes in motion
00:17:46and Eason with time to Dawson.
00:17:48Spinning to the 15.
00:17:50But shy of a first down.
00:17:52Jim Hazlett, number 55.
00:17:54An eight yard pick up.
00:17:56Hazlett up to make the stop.
00:17:58Bob, one of the things that over the years
00:18:00that this team has given their quarterbacks
00:18:02is time to throw.
00:18:04Of course, remember the years with Steve Grogan
00:18:06when he was able to run.
00:18:08But Tony Eason is not the great running threat
00:18:10that I think Grogan was in his prime.
00:18:12He was having a lot of time for him
00:18:14to pick up those receivers
00:18:16and to pick up the secondary receivers.
00:18:18Not the primary one, the secondary one.
00:18:22Steve Grogan, who ironically
00:18:24one year ago in the third game
00:18:26lost his starting job to Tony Eason.
00:18:28One year ago today
00:18:30in his third game of the season
00:18:32against the Seattle Seahawks.
00:18:34Third and three for Eason and the Patriots.
00:18:38Going for it all!
00:18:41Back to the end zone.
00:18:47It was intended for number 82, Derwin Williams
00:18:49but it never had a chance.
00:18:51Well, in contrast, he threw it out of the back of the end zone
00:18:53because he was well covered.
00:18:55But in contrast, that was a third down
00:18:57and about three yards, whereas the other one
00:18:59was third down and two yards.
00:19:01I know we've harped somewhat on the predictability
00:19:03but that's a passing down.
00:19:05Third and three plus.
00:19:07Boy, I chased him enough
00:19:09over the years.
00:19:11I remember chasing him all over the field
00:19:13and he'd just get dog-tired
00:19:15and he'd just drop the ball off.
00:19:17Tony Franklin, who was one-for-one
00:19:19in the regular season, had a perfect nine-for-nine
00:19:21in the preseason out of the hold of Tony Eason.
00:19:25And he's perfect again
00:19:27as the Patriots go on the board.
00:19:29A 33-yard field goal,
00:19:31442 left to play here in the first quarter.
00:19:33Pablo Bell with Dave Rowe
00:19:35at Rich Stadium in Orchard Park, New York.
00:19:37The Buffalo Bills on the short end of a 3-0 score
00:19:39to the New England Patriots.
00:19:41The drive capped off by a 32-yard Tony Franklin
00:19:43field goal. The man right there,
00:19:4557 yards in eight plays.
00:19:49And it's Anthony Hutchison and Mitchell Brookings
00:19:51deep, and it's Hutchison at the four.
00:19:58Out to the 27-yard line,
00:20:00Jim Bowman making the stop.
00:20:03Let's take a look at that last play, Dave,
00:20:05where Derwin Williams in the end zone
00:20:07was hit
00:20:09in the end zone on the pass to Eason
00:20:11by Martin Bayless.
00:20:13Some people would say that this is interference.
00:20:15Well, it is interference if it happens
00:20:17in the field of play, and if the ball's a catchable ball.
00:20:19The referee that was standing right there
00:20:21ruled that it was an uncatchable ball,
00:20:23so in other words, no penalty.
00:20:28Two tight ends in for the Buffalo Bills
00:20:30and Vince Ferragamo, first and ten at their own
00:20:3228-yard line, trailing 3-0.
00:20:38With time, to Ramsey, and a nice catch.
00:20:40First down at the 41-yard line.
00:20:44Roland James to make the tackle for the Patriots.
00:20:46Bob, that's the first ball that I've seen
00:20:48Vince Ferragamo throw strong.
00:20:50In other words, he delivered the ball strong.
00:20:52The other ones he was trying to float,
00:20:54there's the direction of the ball.
00:20:56You can see that it was high,
00:20:58but it was a forceful pass.
00:21:0118-yard pickup for the Bills,
00:21:03first down for them at their own
00:21:0541-yard line.
00:21:09Philadelphia, 3-0 over Washington.
00:21:11Paul McFadden field goal of 42 yards
00:21:13in that one.
00:21:15This is Mike Pruitt bursting up for five.
00:21:20Some more scores coming your way
00:21:22as games are underway.
00:21:24Pittsburgh over Houston, 7-0.
00:21:26Mark Malone, a pass to Louis Lips
00:21:28for 25 yards.
00:21:30Bob Thomas field goal, 20 yards
00:21:32in that one, leading Cincinnati.
00:21:35And Denver and Atlanta are now knotted up.
00:21:37Delroy the 63-yard pass
00:21:39and John Ray interception return
00:21:41for 38 yards.
00:21:43They're tied up in Atlanta. New Orleans over Tampa Bay,
00:21:457-0. Dave Wilson pass
00:21:47to Larry Hardy at 23 yards
00:21:49in that game.
00:21:51And Mike Pruitt battling for yardage
00:21:53out to the 45. Looks like he'll be a bit shy
00:21:55of the first down.
00:21:57Well, here comes the big third down
00:21:59because it's going to be about third down
00:22:01and one yard to go.
00:22:03Typical running down, and you've got to go.
00:22:05This time, I would just imagine
00:22:07that they're going to go to Greg Bell.
00:22:09They have got to come to him.
00:22:11He is their bread and butter man in this situation.
00:22:132-56 left in the first quarter.
00:22:15Patriots lead it 3-0.
00:22:17Mike Pruitt, the leading active rusher
00:22:19in the AFC, was cut by the Browns
00:22:21after spending many, many
00:22:23successful years there.
00:22:27Third and two for the Bills.
00:22:29Greg Bell.
00:22:31And he is stopped
00:22:33for a two-yard loss.
00:22:39Ray Claiborne and Ron Lippitt, the two corners
00:22:41and Lippitt is shaken up. He is shaken up.
00:22:43He looked as if he was being helped off the field.
00:22:45But you have to talk about this
00:22:47Patriot defense, how quickly they react
00:22:49to the ball. Now that's what you call
00:22:51getting well in a hurry.
00:22:53He's already out back running full speed.
00:22:56They react very quickly out of this 3-4 defense.
00:22:58Three down linemen, four linebackers.
00:23:00John Kidd
00:23:02will stand at his own 37-yard line
00:23:04and once again Irving Fryer
00:23:06is back to the Patriots at the 10.
00:23:08The Bills unable to generate any offense
00:23:10as Kidd is now forced to punt
00:23:12for the third time this afternoon.
00:23:14With a minute 56 left in the third quarter.
00:23:16High, high,
00:23:18Kidd. Fryer just going to let it go
00:23:20and watch the bounce.
00:23:23So it's a touchback
00:23:25and the Patriots will have it
00:23:27first and 10 at their own 20.
00:23:29Let's check in with NFL 85 and Bob Costas.
00:23:31You've got to answer the call
00:23:33on defense. You've got to stop them.
00:23:35Three downs, get the ball back inside
00:23:37the 50-yard line for your offense.
00:23:45First down, New England inside
00:23:47their 5.
00:23:53Robert Weathers
00:23:57and he is gang-tackled at the 6
00:23:59led by Don Smith.
00:24:01Bruce Smith, their number one draft pick,
00:24:03the number one pick in the NFL draft
00:24:05was benched this week.
00:24:07First time he's not started a game
00:24:09since the freshman at Virginia Tech
00:24:11and he says he does not want to make this a habit.
00:24:13John Hanna, number 73.
00:24:15Probably one of the most forceful players
00:24:17that I as a player ever played against.
00:24:19You just cannot believe.
00:24:21Come on around, follow me.
00:24:25The 40,000 goals fans in attendance
00:24:27urging their defense on
00:24:29in his second down and 8.
00:24:31And Weathers again.
00:24:33Steve Freeman
00:24:35with strong safety
00:24:37wraps them up at the line of scrimmage.
00:24:43That was typically an unpredictable play right there.
00:24:45Second down and 10
00:24:47is almost assured passing down.
00:24:50Now they're going to put a lot of pressure on Easton.
00:24:52They're going to come after him with the blitz.
00:24:54They're going to run four new linemen in here
00:24:56or four new backs, I should say.
00:24:58They're going to go what they call their six-back
00:25:00or dime defense where they have six defensive backs
00:25:02and they let their linemen really come after them.
00:25:04How about that score?
00:25:06They're back 7-7.
00:25:08There's Cleveland.
00:25:10Dallas is rallying today.
00:25:12Set the infield goal and a Danny White pass.
00:25:14It's Doug Cosby for 11 yards and the score
00:25:16Dallas 10-0.
00:25:19So the Buffalo defense
00:25:21answers the call.
00:25:23They certainly do
00:25:25and they're very emotional on this play.
00:25:27Sometimes you can almost worry about those things
00:25:29where they said they were predictable.
00:25:31They can almost worry about those things
00:25:33and they can become, try to do things
00:25:35that are not normal to them.
00:25:37I would question that call, a run and play
00:25:39on third down and 10.
00:25:41That's the end of the quarter
00:25:43here at Rich Stadium and Buffalo
00:25:45will stand in the zone, end zone
00:25:47and they've got Hill just inside midfield.
00:25:49Demarillo's longest is 75
00:25:51and would obviously like to have one of those
00:25:53right here.
00:25:55Pressure.
00:25:57And a flag down in the end zone
00:25:59as Hill gathers it just out of bounds.
00:26:01Now this could be a very interesting call.
00:26:03The punter cannot fake
00:26:05a hit.
00:26:07It's going to be interesting to see whether they call it
00:26:09or they are going to call it a personal foul
00:26:11on the kicker, but the punter cannot fake
00:26:13being hit. That's an unsportsmanlike
00:26:15conduct.
00:26:17So let's take a peek, maybe we can get a peek at what that was
00:26:19see if he really in fact was hit hard enough
00:26:21to knock him down because he went down just like he was shot.
00:26:23The line of scrimmage was
00:26:25at the 13, it was 4th and 7
00:26:27for the New England Patriots.
00:26:31Well we're not going to get another peek at that.
00:26:33Running into the kicker, number 79
00:26:35defense,
00:26:37first down.
00:26:39Well that sure helps
00:26:41the New England Patriots a lot.
00:26:43Look at him, he's over there laughing about it.
00:26:45He's saying, boy did you see me fall down there?
00:26:47Dean Pratter was
00:26:49the guilty party of the Buffalo Bills
00:26:51and the Patriots get an automatic
00:26:53first down out of that one.
00:26:55And it does not make
00:26:57the fans here in Buffalo very happy.
00:27:01But it's the Patriots ball nonetheless,
00:27:03first and 10 at their own 13.
00:27:05They lead it 3-0.
00:27:07And the Bills
00:27:09stack up Craig James after a one yard game.
00:27:11Don Smith again,
00:27:13who especially is playing the run
00:27:15and he's done it very well here this afternoon.
00:27:17He has, they're going, they're running at him
00:27:19but Buffalo really has controlled the run
00:27:21so far in this game.
00:27:23They're controlling the line of scrimmage.
00:27:25You've got Brian Holloway with a bad finger
00:27:27and I don't know how effective he can be.
00:27:29John Hannah's been off for so many weeks.
00:27:31Pete Brock has had a severe knee injury
00:27:33and he's coming back from that.
00:27:35A lot of question marks up there.
00:27:37Wide receivers are Irving and Fryer.
00:27:39Irving, Fryer to the right.
00:27:41Stanley Morgan to the left.
00:27:43This is to Fryer and a look in
00:27:45and he's hit by Rod Hill immediately.
00:27:49Looks to be a bit shy of the first down.
00:27:57There's these statistics in the first quarter.
00:27:59They don't really show a whole lot.
00:28:01Time possessions, nothing.
00:28:03It's just been kind of a so-so first quarter.
00:28:05Neither team has really come out and controlled.
00:28:07Both teams have had very poor field position
00:28:09which of course has put a major emphasis upon those stats.
00:28:13Neither team has really been able to drive the ball a long way.
00:28:16Just shy of the first down, David.
00:28:18It is third down and less than one
00:28:20on the 22-yard line for the Patriots.
00:28:23Weathers and Tatupu are the running backs
00:28:25behind Tony Eason.
00:28:27And Greg Hawthorne's in motion.
00:28:29But Tatupu, second effort for the first down
00:28:32to the 26.
00:28:37You called it, Bob.
00:28:39It was the second effort that got that first down.
00:28:41Had he not been able to lunge on that little play
00:28:43when he was hit, if he had stopped right there
00:28:45of course he would have been short.
00:28:47The difference between the great running backs
00:28:49and the also-ran is their leg strength.
00:28:52Watch when Tatupu gets hit.
00:28:54If he gets hit right there and stops running
00:28:56right there.
00:28:58If he gets hit right there and stops running
00:29:00he doesn't get a first down.
00:29:02There's what makes the first down the second effort,
00:29:04the leg drive.
00:29:06Number 78, Bruce Smith.
00:29:08And James again off the left side of the 30.
00:29:12Patriots desperately trying to get their running game
00:29:14into gear after last week's 27-yard performance
00:29:17against the Chicago Bears.
00:29:19And I'm not sure they're having such great success
00:29:21at it here this afternoon.
00:29:22Well, they're not having great success,
00:29:24but they have been known for the run.
00:29:26In the years past, they would come out
00:29:27and they would drive the ball on you.
00:29:29They'd come down, they'd be first down,
00:29:30they'd drive for five yards.
00:29:31Second down, five or six yards.
00:29:33They just continued driving down the field.
00:29:35That's their trademark.
00:29:36And that's what they're trying to get back to.
00:29:39Second down and six on the 30.
00:29:44And Craig James out to the 34.
00:29:47Jim Haslett, number 55, up to make the stop,
00:29:50but he'll be shy of a first down.
00:29:52One of the big things that they're doing right now,
00:29:54the Patriots, is they've come out with two tight ends.
00:29:56They've got Dawson in there and they've got
00:29:58Derek Ramsey.
00:29:59And they're coming out with two tight ends
00:30:01trying to establish that run.
00:30:03It doesn't leave much deception
00:30:04to who's going to carry the ball.
00:30:07One of the things that Raymond Berry
00:30:08talked about last night was balance.
00:30:10He wanted to balance his passing
00:30:12and his running attack.
00:30:14Third down and one.
00:30:16To keep the drive alive.
00:30:22Mosey to Tupou, flagged out.
00:30:27And he's close to a first down,
00:30:28but a penalty marker thrown in a Patriot backfield.
00:30:30Well, the man who throws that
00:30:32is going to call a holding call.
00:30:33What they did is as they pulled out,
00:30:35one of the defensive linemen was in good pursuit
00:30:38and they reached out and tackled him from the rear.
00:30:40That's the call that I believe they're going to make.
00:30:45One area the Buffalo Bills have definitely
00:30:47improved on over the last week.
00:30:49As a matter of fact, their first two weeks
00:30:51is the number of penalties they've had
00:30:53incurred against them.
00:30:54And the same thing is true on the other side
00:30:56of the fence.
00:30:57The Buffalo Bills have been highly criticized
00:30:59because they had, what, 13 or 14 penalties
00:31:01last week.
00:31:03Holding on the center.
00:31:05Still third down.
00:31:10Well, Mr. Smurlis got the best of that one.
00:31:13But Pete Brock is a great player.
00:31:15But what happened that time is Smurlis played across.
00:31:17Remember we saw the play earlier where he had
00:31:19he had hooked him.
00:31:20That time Smurlis was across
00:31:21and Pete really had no other alternative
00:31:23except to jump out and tackle him from the back.
00:31:25Third down and 11.
00:31:27He's in his 5 for 6 for 61 yards.
00:31:32And he's got time.
00:31:34Whoa!
00:31:36Caught, but way shy of a first down.
00:31:38Stepin starring the receiver.
00:31:47Well, you said he did have time
00:31:48and he certainly did.
00:31:49He stood in the pocket a long time.
00:31:51He had a lot of time.
00:31:52We'll see Sean McManie coming from the back
00:31:54You'll see Sean McManie coming from the back side here.
00:31:56He was really the force on this play.
00:31:58Easton has a lot of time to look downfield.
00:32:01But you'll see Sean McManie coming from the back side
00:32:05just as he gets rid of the ball and taking a hit.
00:32:07But Stepin starring doesn't get downfield
00:32:09far enough for the first down.
00:32:11And as a wide receiver,
00:32:12you have got to get first down yardage.
00:32:14That's a completion for three yards.
00:32:16Two or three yards.
00:32:17That's not what you want to do
00:32:18on third down and 11 or 12.
00:32:21Fourth down and 10 for the Patriots.
00:32:23Camarillo back to front again
00:32:24and his 11-rod Hill stands at his own 30.
00:32:28And I'll bet they don't run into him.
00:32:31Hill on the line drive.
00:32:33Returnable.
00:32:38Looking for some blocks
00:32:39but not coming up with any.
00:32:43And once again,
00:32:44a cacophony of boos from the Buffalo Bills fans.
00:32:47A 44-yard putt.
00:32:49They've only managed to muster two first downs.
00:32:53Well, Bob, you get the feeling
00:32:54that something's going to happen.
00:32:55They have got to go long to Butler
00:32:57or throw one of them passes
00:32:58to kind of loosen up these defenses.
00:33:00We just haven't had a long throw yet.
00:33:02Play action Ferragamo
00:33:04dumping it out to his tight end,
00:33:06picking up about six.
00:33:07Pete Metzeler is on the catch.
00:33:09Let's check in with Bob Costas now at NFL 85.
00:33:15A week ago, the NFL admits
00:33:16that the Oilers lost two touchdowns in Washington
00:33:18by virtue of officials' mistakes.
00:33:20It almost happened to the Bengals today.
00:33:21Assias into Collinsworth.
00:33:22He's obviously bumped over the line.
00:33:24The official at first makes a terrible call.
00:33:26No TD.
00:33:27But then they confer and reverse it,
00:33:28and it stands.
00:33:29Since he's seven, San Diego three.
00:33:34Second down and four.
00:33:36Thank you very much, Bob Costas.
00:33:38Second down and three on the 37-yard line.
00:33:43Eason Ramson is in motion behind Ferragamo.
00:33:47Greg Bell.
00:33:48Close to the first down at the 40.
00:33:51Andre Tippett, number 56,
00:33:53the Patriots defense making the stop.
00:33:55There's the wristband of Vince Ferragamo, David.
00:33:58That's where he gets his plays.
00:33:59What they do is they signal in a call.
00:34:02Each player, the quarterback on the sideline
00:34:04has a wrist call,
00:34:05and the coach will tell him to call,
00:34:06say, a pass play, number six,
00:34:08the sixth pass play down,
00:34:09and he'll signal into him,
00:34:10call the sixth pass play down.
00:34:12He looks down his wrist and, of course,
00:34:14confers what the coach wants.
00:34:16The Bills, indeed, pick up a first down.
00:34:18They're third of the afternoon, 847 left to play
00:34:21in the half.
00:34:22The Patriots lead at 3-0.
00:34:23Very conservative football game so far.
00:34:2640,000 fans in an 80,000-seat stadium
00:34:29as Ramson goes in motion,
00:34:30and it's play action.
00:34:31Ferragamo firing and connecting at midfield.
00:34:34Pete Metzelaar is a tight end,
00:34:37and it'll be close to another first down for Buffalo.
00:34:42An awfully big target, Pete Metzelaar,
00:34:446'7".
00:34:466'7", 250 pounds.
00:34:49Tight end coming out of that back,
00:34:50off that line.
00:34:51That's quite a target to throw to.
00:34:52I think even I could hit him.
00:34:54You'll see him on the top part of your screen.
00:34:55It's just a crossing pattern,
00:34:56and all he's trying to do is get into the open territory.
00:34:59You can see him just kind of
00:35:00staying in the open territory.
00:35:02It's a zone defense,
00:35:03so they have to react to the ball,
00:35:05and, of course, Ferragamo had a lot of time
00:35:07as he rolled out.
00:35:08Free safety.
00:35:09Fred Marion making a stop.
00:35:10Metzelaar's coming here in the trades.
00:35:12The wide receiver, Byron Franklin,
00:35:14who they sent to Seattle.
00:35:16First down for the Bills at midfield.
00:35:24Eric Richardson is away.
00:35:34A 24-yard pass to Eric Richardson,
00:35:37and a nice move thrown in to the 25-yard line,
00:35:41and the Bills have another first down,
00:35:42and something working.
00:35:44Well, Bob, I'd rather be lucky than good sometimes,
00:35:46and that's what this play is.
00:35:48The Patriots had this play well covered.
00:35:50You'll see the coverage.
00:35:51There are two men around Richardson
00:35:53as he makes the catch.
00:35:54He just catches it in the seam.
00:35:55It was a well-thrown ball,
00:35:56and he's off to the races,
00:35:57and they've got a first down,
00:35:58and, of course, they're threatening.
00:36:03First down, Buffalo outside the 25.
00:36:11Greg Bell.
00:36:16And he carries Ronnie Lippitt out of bounds.
00:36:21And he'll be close to another first down.
00:36:24One of the big things that happens in a game like this,
00:36:26if you allow a team that's been
00:36:28really kind of humiliated and defeated,
00:36:30if you allow them to get momentum,
00:36:32it can kill you.
00:36:33You'll watch Bell here.
00:36:34Now, watch his leg action.
00:36:36Right there, that looks like Walter Payton,
00:36:38but he's got the emotion.
00:36:39Look at that.
00:36:40He lowers his head and just about runs over
00:36:42Ronnie Lippitt, number 42.
00:36:44But right now, the Buffalo team has got some emotion,
00:36:47and they're playing with that emotion.
00:36:49Pickup of nine for Greg Bell.
00:36:51Five carries, 21 yards.
00:36:54Three wide receivers.
00:36:55Andre Reid, the rookie from Kootztown State,
00:36:58at the top of your screen.
00:37:00Ramson and Richardson at the bottom,
00:37:02and Ramson comes in motion.
00:37:05Aragamo.
00:37:07Flares at the bell.
00:37:08First down.
00:37:12Touchdown.
00:37:13Touchdown.
00:37:37A 16-yard throw from Aragamo to Greg Bell
00:37:41for the Buffalo Bills' first touchdown of 1985.
00:37:44Well, it took three games to get it,
00:37:46but there he is, Greg Bell, number 28.
00:37:48It was a screen pass out to the flat to Greg Bell.
00:37:52He got behind his blockers and picked up a wall of blockers
00:37:55and went into the end zone.
00:38:02Scott Norwood out of the hold of John Kidd.
00:38:06And the Bills lead it 7-6.
00:38:11...said that Buffalo will challenge,
00:38:13and he called them to win, and with plays like this,
00:38:16they made very well.
00:38:17A slip screen out to the flat.
00:38:19There's that Walter Payton shuffle.
00:38:20He gets a wall of blockers, tumbles in the end zone.
00:38:2316-yard touchdown.
00:38:24It sure changes the complexion of the game.
00:38:27Tim Vogler really threw a good block on that number 65.
00:38:32But the Buffalo Bills finally give their fans
00:38:35something to cheer about.
00:38:37The kick to Starring at the 10.
00:38:43Look at this.
00:38:46He's still on his feet.
00:38:48Great return by Stephan Starring.
00:38:51Just outside the 35-yard line.
00:38:58Let's take another look at that touchdown,
00:38:59and we'll come back and take a look
00:39:00at Stephan Starring's return.
00:39:01But Greg Bell on the flare.
00:39:03Well, there's the slip screen.
00:39:04You saw how quickly Bell, number 28,
00:39:06came out of the backfield.
00:39:07Now he's just looking for his blockers.
00:39:09There's 65, Vogler.
00:39:10Watch the block he throws here.
00:39:12Allows Bell to turn around.
00:39:13Almost looks like a clip,
00:39:14but the defender turned his back, so it's not.
00:39:17But the Patriots did exactly what they had to do.
00:39:20They had to come back,
00:39:21and they had to get something going on
00:39:23for themselves to have momentum,
00:39:25and they did it with Stephan Starring.
00:39:2753-yard kickoff return.
00:39:29First and 10 for New England at the 37-yard line.
00:39:32Under pressure, Eason gets it to Tony Collins.
00:39:35Oh, he stays in bounds.
00:39:37No, they say he did step out at the 34.
00:39:43Well, just when Buffalo thought
00:39:45they were getting the momentum,
00:39:46of course Stephan Starring came back
00:39:48with a 51-yard return.
00:39:50Watch this return.
00:39:51He just seems to get out outside of the containment.
00:39:54That end man on the line, number 99,
00:39:56he turned that play back in.
00:39:57You can see he just tightropes down the sideline there.
00:40:01He's within a foot.
00:40:02Now, that could almost be a penalty there
00:40:04when the clothesline across the neck.
00:40:05That was pretty close to a penalty.
00:40:07They officially mark it a 53-yard return
00:40:10for Stephan Starring.
00:40:11The Patriots have 2nd and 6th
00:40:15at the 33-yard line of Buffalo,
00:40:17and Tony Eason wants to talk it over.
00:40:21There's 624 left in the half.
00:40:23The Bills lead at 7-3,
00:40:24and Eason saw something he didn't like.
00:40:28For the Patriots, we'll talk it over,
00:40:31but we'll have it 2nd and 6th.
00:40:346 for New England, 624 left to play
00:40:37in the first half.
00:40:38The ball at the 33.
00:40:39Patriots trail 7-3.
00:40:44Derek Ramsey, first down,
00:40:46still on his feet inside the 20.
00:40:50Charles Romes, number 26,
00:40:53who has four of his 17 career interceptions
00:40:56against this New England team.
00:40:58Probably talked about the force that Metzler was
00:41:01as we watched the referees confer,
00:41:02but look at the target here.
00:41:03Derek Ramsey, 6'6", 235 pounds,
00:41:06and he can really run with the ball.
00:41:08He keeps his balance well.
00:41:09He's very, very strong.
00:41:15And a former Oakland Raider, by the way.
00:41:17Illegal contact.
00:41:18Number 25, defense.
00:41:20Penalty declined.
00:41:22First down.
00:41:23Penalty was on Rod Hill,
00:41:24who was shaken up on the play,
00:41:26and is now out of the lineup
00:41:28for the Buffalo Bills.
00:41:29Derek Barrows is in to replace him.
00:41:31Well, what he did is he hit the wide receiver
00:41:33in the arm with his chin,
00:41:35and that was the illegal contact.
00:41:37It just about knocked him out.
00:41:40All right, the clock continues to move.
00:41:416'05", left to play.
00:41:44All right, the clock continues to move.
00:41:456'05", left to play.
00:41:47Denver moving back ahead of Atlanta,
00:41:4914-7 in the second period.
00:41:51The Eagles, still the only team in the NFL now
00:41:53to not score a touchdown,
00:41:54gets two field goals over Washington
00:41:56in the second period.
00:41:59First and ten, New England at the 17.
00:42:01Fire in motion, and the end around.
00:42:07And he picks up about nine on the play.
00:42:09Inside the ten, Charlie Romes running out of bounds
00:42:11on the far sideline.
00:42:12A good call in this situation.
00:42:14The Buffalo team is reacting very quickly
00:42:17to the ball, and with the speed of Irving Fryer,
00:42:19you can see everybody coming this way
00:42:20to the bottom of the screen.
00:42:21There comes Fryer on the,
00:42:22what they call the end around,
00:42:24and just about gets the first down yardage.
00:42:26But a good call, just trying to keep Buffalo
00:42:28off the tempo of the game.
00:42:30They're reacting very quickly to the play.
00:42:34It'll be second and one for New England
00:42:36at the nine.
00:42:39Morgan wide left, Fryer wide right.
00:42:42To Tupou and Collins are the running backs.
00:42:48And it's a tupou to the six.
00:42:51Make that Tony Collins.
00:42:52Ben Williams on the stop.
00:43:01We briefly pause five seconds
00:43:03for station identification.
00:43:04This is the NBC television network.
00:43:08WWLP Springfield.
00:43:145'16", left in the half.
00:43:16Buffalo leads at seven to three.
00:43:17The Patriots are driving.
00:43:18They have a first and goal at the six yard line.
00:43:25Craig James.
00:43:28Stacked up at the four.
00:43:31Gang tackling.
00:43:33Steve Freeman and Jim Hazlitt leading it.
00:43:35Bob, one of the things that we talked about
00:43:37in our pregame was whether this Buffalo team
00:43:39would quit or not on Kay Stevenson.
00:43:41And I don't think they are.
00:43:42You can see the emotion that they're playing with.
00:43:44That time, six men were in on the tackle
00:43:46and there were at least three or four men
00:43:48running to the play.
00:43:49So they have a lot of emotion right here.
00:43:51What New England has to do is come out
00:43:53and they have to establish quickly.
00:43:55They have to get ahead in this team
00:43:56and demoralize this Buffalo team
00:43:58if they want to stay on top and win this game.
00:44:00But the longer it's close, the longer it's close,
00:44:03the more trouble New England could possibly have.
00:44:06Second and goal at the five.
00:44:11And again, James to throw to Tony Collins.
00:44:14Touchdown!
00:44:20Well, just when you think it's predictable,
00:44:22it's unpredictable.
00:44:23A great call by that man, Raymond Burry.
00:44:26A run pass.
00:44:27Everybody knows the ability that both James
00:44:30and Collins have as runners.
00:44:32They haven't run the ball well here.
00:44:33They're averaging less than three yards.
00:44:35We could see the reaction of the Buffalo team
00:44:37quickly to the play.
00:44:39And he tosses a little pass over top,
00:44:41wide open and clear.
00:44:49Play covered five yards.
00:44:51The Patriots on the board with a touchdown.
00:44:55Craig James to Tony Collins.
00:44:57Franklin out of the hold of Eason.
00:44:59And it's there and the Patriots move back out on top
00:45:02with 4.28 left to play in the half.
00:45:07The scoring drive, 37 yards and six plays.
00:45:10The time of possession, 2.03.
00:45:12And, of course, the five-yard pass
00:45:14from James to Tony Collins.
00:45:17I know it's still early in this game, Bob,
00:45:18but this is a very big series here for both teams.
00:45:21If New England comes out and shuts off Buffalo right now,
00:45:24they could really destroy their confidence
00:45:26and could really quell the emotion
00:45:28that this Buffalo team has.
00:45:30If, in fact, Buffalo comes out
00:45:32and is able to drive the ball down the field,
00:45:34then they're going to keep the momentum
00:45:36that they've established early in this game.
00:45:38So it's a very big series of downs for both teams.
00:45:42Both teams putting back-to-back drives
00:45:44after a very conservative quarter and a half.
00:45:48Buffalo driving very impressively
00:45:50and the Patriots coming back on their own.
00:45:52That's a good point because both the drives
00:45:54were fairly conservative.
00:45:56Of course, the one was set up by the step and starring run,
00:45:58they have not attacked the offense.
00:46:00Excuse me, the defense.
00:46:01They have not attacked their opponent's defense.
00:46:03Tony Franklin will kick it in play
00:46:04and Hutchison and Brookins are deep.
00:46:09And Hutchison will take it at the 2.
00:46:13And a breakthrough a hole across the 20 to the 23
00:46:16where he is down by Greg Hawthorne
00:46:18on special teams and the Bills go back on offense.
00:46:23Vince Ferragamo.
00:46:24Dave Rowe needs...
00:46:29eight yards to pass the career 10,000 yard mark.
00:46:37Well, you know, I still need 10,000 yards
00:46:39to pass that same mark.
00:46:42Of course, coming up San Diego now 17 to 7 over Cincinnati
00:46:46and New Orleans 14 to 3 over Tampa Bay.
00:46:49Buffalo Bills have a first down and 10 at the 29.
00:46:52Ferragamo, there's the 10,000 yards
00:46:55and a first down at the 45 yard line.
00:46:57Eric Richardson, the receiver.
00:46:59And that's the first time they've gone deep on this Patriot team.
00:47:02It's the first time they've thrown a ball over 15 yards.
00:47:0721 yard pickup for Ferragamo.
00:47:09He is now 7 for 10 and 100 yards.
00:47:19Here's the pass.
00:47:20You can see that Ferragamo's got a lot of protection.
00:47:22It's a quick pass of slant, what they call a slant batter.
00:47:25Greg Bell on the run and he picks up maybe one at best.
00:47:29Clock continues to move with 3.38 left in the half.
00:47:32The Patriots lead Buffalo 10 to 7.
00:47:37Well, here's the...
00:47:38We talked about, of course, the 10,000 yards.
00:47:40That's quite a milestone for a quarterback to throw.
00:47:42But here's the pass that gets him over 10,000 yards.
00:47:44As I said, a slant to the post.
00:47:46It's a safe pass.
00:47:48It's the first time they've thrown over 10 or 15 yards.
00:47:55Bells face a 2nd and 10 now at the 45 yard line.
00:47:58Ferragamo 7 for 10 for 110 yards.
00:48:01And a touchdown.
00:48:02Their first touchdown of the year.
00:48:08Flares it out to Bell.
00:48:09Looking for a block.
00:48:11And he doesn't get it.
00:48:12A good Patriot defensive coverage on that play.
00:48:15That's absolutely what happened.
00:48:16The Patriots reacted very quickly to the screen play.
00:48:20What happened on the first one, they were fooled.
00:48:22They were all rushing the quarterback.
00:48:23This was the first down.
00:48:24And the screen really didn't draw the rush of the defensive linemen.
00:48:28They reacted very quickly out to it and stopped it for no yardage.
00:48:31Number 38.
00:48:32Your picture, Roland James making the defensive play.
00:48:35It's now 3rd and 9 for Ferragamo and the Bells.
00:48:38The ball still at the 46 yard line.
00:48:43Eric Richardson is wide left.
00:48:48Jerry Butler is back after a year and a half.
00:48:53Suffering an injury.
00:48:54Wide right.
00:48:55Hutchinson gets popped as he goes over the middle by Fred Marion.
00:48:58Or make that Roland James.
00:49:00As Hutchinson knew he was in a pass pattern.
00:49:03He certainly did.
00:49:04And that's what tests the courage of wide receivers.
00:49:06When they come across that middle into what they call no man's land.
00:49:10When I was with the Raiders, Jack Tatum and George Atkinson used to say that
00:49:14that's no man's land.
00:49:15Because he's standing back there.
00:49:16You see 31 Fred Marion just level him.
00:49:19That's no man's land.
00:49:20Really tests your courage to come across there.
00:49:23So the Patriot defense holds on this key series.
00:49:26As Dave Rowe points out and John Kidd goes back to his 31 to punt.
00:49:31Irving Friar.
00:49:33Six returns.
00:49:34An average of 6.8.
00:49:37The return is on.
00:49:38And it's a low wobbly kick.
00:49:39Friar definitely turn up opportunity here.
00:49:43Looking for help.
00:49:46And he picks up about 5 on the return to the 24 yard line.
00:49:50Rodney Bellinger down on special teams to make the stop.
00:49:57Two minutes left in the half.
00:49:58The Patriots out on top of the Buffalo Bills.
00:50:01By the score of 10 to 7.
00:50:03Last week being blown out by the Jets by 39 points.
00:50:06The Patriots now with the lead and the ball for the first down.
00:50:09On the blitz.
00:50:10This is Stanley Morgan.
00:50:12Gets a block.
00:50:13And a first down out of bounds across the 35 yard line.
00:50:18Oh boy did he wipe out the coaches.
00:50:21But let me tell you there coach.
00:50:23That was your own man.
00:50:24Because his own man shoved him into it.
00:50:26That coach took quite a shot in the back.
00:50:28We can't tell who it is.
00:50:29But took quite a shot in the back to the bench.
00:50:37You see here Stanley Morgan turns it up.
00:50:39He's just running for the flag trying to get out of bounds.
00:50:41Now watch the shot that he takes which forces him into the coach.
00:50:46There's the push.
00:50:48And there's of course the innocent coach standing there.
00:50:51Ouch boy and he really hit that bench.
00:50:53He's still down there.
00:50:57That was a penalty marker thrown in that play.
00:50:59And it was against the New England Patriots.
00:51:01A holding call but the coach is still down.
00:51:04Well if it was Kay Stevenson we'd call that a knockout punch.
00:51:08Had to look twice.
00:51:09If it was anybody that you think might be a hit along the sidelines.
00:51:12It would be Stevenson.
00:51:13The way things are going for him.
00:51:14That's certainly right.
00:51:152 and 14 last year.
00:51:160 and 2 this year.
00:51:17Winless in the preseason.
00:51:19First down and 20 for the Patriots on the 14.
00:51:22With a minute 51 left in the half.
00:51:25And eluding tackles.
00:51:28Back across the 23.
00:51:30Back across the 23.
00:51:32Darrell Talley makes it finally but Craig James is the ball carrier.
00:51:36Obviously we listen to the crowd here.
00:51:37The emotion of the crowd is just kind of teetering.
00:51:40You just don't know whether they're going to support him or whether they're going to leave him.
00:51:43But you can see again they've got a lot of concern.
00:51:45That coach took quite a shot in the back.
00:51:47And we still don't have any identification as to who that is.
00:51:50So there's Kay Stevenson.
00:51:52So we obviously know it was not him.
00:51:55Second down and 11 for New England at the 23.
00:51:58The clock continues to move here in the half.
00:52:00Patriots lead at 10 to 7 with 1-11 left.
00:52:12And the draw play gets nothing.
00:52:15Don Smith reading it out along with Jim Haslett.
00:52:25And now the Buffalo Bills.
00:52:27Sensing they may get an opportunity to get their hands on the football.
00:52:30Call a timeout.
00:52:31Well several things can happen in this situation.
00:52:33Third down and 10 yards.
00:52:35If they in fact do get the chance to hold that clock.
00:52:38They can get the ball back with good field position.
00:52:40And you never know.
00:52:41They may get a chance for a long field goal.
00:52:43Tony Franklin is killed.
00:52:45He's kicked two from 65 yards.
00:52:47And we'll be right back in a minute.
00:52:49But that was the team doctor.
00:52:52It was not a coach in fact that was injured.
00:52:54He is up sitting on the bench.
00:52:55He looks as if he's going to be alright.
00:52:57There's a picture of him sitting there.
00:52:59He actually managed to smile a few moments ago.
00:53:02There's the shot he took.
00:53:03Not bad but you should have stayed a little bit lower.
00:53:09Patriots third and 10 with 51 seconds left in the half.
00:53:12Easton will operate from the shotgun.
00:53:15From their own 24.
00:53:22Inside handoff and they get nothing.
00:53:24And once again the Buffalo Bills rush to call a timeout.
00:53:27Because they're going to have their opportunity.
00:53:29With 46 seconds left in the half.
00:53:31Well we talked about that opportunity for them to kick a field goal.
00:53:34I alluded to Tony Franklin.
00:53:36Of course he plays on the other team.
00:53:38So they don't have a problem.
00:53:39They can't get him.
00:53:40But they do have a chance if they can get the ball here.
00:53:43They're going to have a few seconds.
00:53:44They could possibly throw two or three passes to get in field goal range.
00:53:47For John Kidd of course number four.
00:53:50Coming up at halftime.
00:53:51NFL 85 with Bob Ahmad and Axe.
00:53:54And of course all the scores.
00:53:56Some action around the National Football League this afternoon.
00:53:59I know.
00:54:00What do you think about Pete Axton on picking the Buffalo Bills today?
00:54:02I wonder if he knew something that we didn't.
00:54:04Well let me tell you this Dave.
00:54:06Eight years ago the Buffalo Bills.
00:54:08In the third.
00:54:09In the second game of the season.
00:54:10Lost Seattle.
00:54:11By 39 points.
00:54:13They then played the Patriots in the third game.
00:54:16We're two touchdown underdogs.
00:54:17And beat them 20 to 7.
00:54:18So there is precedent for what is out here today.
00:54:20So if Axe takes all the credit.
00:54:21That's all well and good.
00:54:22But there is precedent.
00:54:23Well I think you probably called Axe and told him that.
00:54:31Rod Hill is deep in Camarillo to kick.
00:54:3346 seconds on the halftime clock.
00:54:35Patriots lead at 10 to 7.
00:54:37Return of the Patriots.
00:54:38And the Patriots win the game.
00:54:40Rod Hill is deep in Camarillo to kick.
00:54:4146 seconds on the halftime clock.
00:54:43Patriots lead at 10 to 7.
00:54:45Return of the ball.
00:54:47At the 35.
00:54:52And Hill scampers out of bounds.
00:54:53Just inside the 45.
00:54:55With 36 seconds left on the clock.
00:54:57And Ferragamo comes out to go to work.
00:54:59A 43-yard punt.
00:55:00And a 10-yard return.
00:55:01Well Ferragamo has to pick up about 20 yards.
00:55:04In this next few seconds.
00:55:06In this next 36 seconds.
00:55:07In order to get in John Kidd's range.
00:55:09John Kidd has only kicked a field goal this year of 34 yards.
00:55:12That's his only.
00:55:13That's his longest kick.
00:55:14So that's only from the 17.
00:55:16Well excuse me.
00:55:17From about the 27-yard line.
00:55:18So it's not really that long a kick.
00:55:20But he has the range.
00:55:21He has been able to kick long ones.
00:55:23But they've got to pick up about 25.
00:55:25Maybe 20, 25 yards to get in his range.
00:55:28Excuse me.
00:55:29Did I say Kidd?
00:55:30I meant Scott Norwood.
00:55:31What am I saying here now?
00:55:32Wait a minute.
00:55:33It's Scott Norwood.
00:55:35I knew that.
00:55:36I knew that.
00:55:38Well thanks there buddy.
00:55:39Thank you buddy.
00:55:42That's Andre Reid.
00:55:44Going in motion.
00:55:45For Ferragamo on first and 10.
00:55:47And it's a little screen.
00:55:48Greg Bell.
00:55:50He picks up maybe one or two.
00:55:51But stops the clock with 29 seconds left.
00:55:56Bills have one timeout remaining.
00:56:00And trail at 10 to 7.
00:56:03Well the screen pass is not going to get.
00:56:05They've got to come down and attack.
00:56:06I would look for him to go to probably Jerry Butler in this situation.
00:56:10Because he's got the speed to get down deep.
00:56:12They can use their timeout.
00:56:14And still have a chance to kick this field goal.
00:56:16There's that young Kidd.
00:56:18Scott Norwood.
00:56:19I wonder if his mom heard me call him John Kidd.
00:56:21I hate to say that.
00:56:22Young Kidd.
00:56:23Oh I just picked that up.
00:56:26Second and 9.
00:56:27Ferragamo.
00:56:28Far sideline to Reid.
00:56:29And he's out of bounds with a first down catch.
00:56:33At the 44.
00:56:34Rod McSwain.
00:56:36Pushing him out of bounds.
00:56:37Andre Reid.
00:56:39Fourth round pick.
00:56:40Out of Kutztown State in Pennsylvania.
00:56:4211 yard pickup.
00:56:44I know it well.
00:56:45The home of the famous Kutztown State Fair.
00:56:48Just a little tidbit of information I'll throw on you there buddy.
00:56:51I won't forget it.
00:56:53Bill's not forced to use a timeout with the out of bounds play.
00:56:56There's 26 seconds left in the half.
00:56:59Buffalo trails it.
00:57:0110-7.
00:57:053-8.
00:57:13With time.
00:57:14But incomplete.
00:57:15Behind Mike Pruitt.
00:57:18Larry McGrew defending on the play.
00:57:20In Pruitt's shirt.
00:57:22He absolutely was.
00:57:23That was great coverage.
00:57:24Ferragamo had no one to throw it to.
00:57:26He just unloaded it in an area.
00:57:28But he really had no one to throw it.
00:57:31They used up 5 seconds.
00:57:3221 left.
00:57:34Bill still have a timeout left.
00:57:37Second and 10 at the 44.
00:57:41This is where the Patriots team has really shined this year.
00:57:44They have really shined in their defensive play.
00:57:46They can really get after the quarterback.
00:57:48So I would really look for them to come hard.
00:57:50Especially Tippett.
00:57:56Over the middle to Richardson.
00:57:59And he can't hang on.
00:58:01Claiborne.
00:58:02Step and step.
00:58:04Penalty marker.
00:58:07That is going to hurt Buffalo.
00:58:09It's going to probably take them.
00:58:10Well, they may be calling a late hit here on the quarterback.
00:58:13Let's wait and see what Jerry Seaman, our referee, says.
00:58:17No, he called holding.
00:58:18So it's really going to hurt Buffalo.
00:58:21You know, year after year, Raymond Claiborne has got the stigma of being just the outstanding quarterback.
00:58:26And puts so much pressure on the other quarterback.
00:58:28You know, it's also interesting, Dave, about the Patriot defense.
00:58:31Illegal use of hands.
00:58:32Number 70.
00:58:34Offense.
00:58:35Still second down.
00:58:36That's right, tackle Joe Devlin.
00:58:37The interesting thing about the Patriot defense,
00:58:39they're all draft choices except one, Toby Williams.
00:58:42And none of the players in the Patriots defense has played for another team.
00:58:47Except, I would say, Rod McSwain, who's in there now.
00:58:50But these are all New England Patriot talent pool players.
00:58:56Second down, 20, 16 seconds left in the half.
00:59:02Ball back at the 46-yard line.
00:59:07Bounces it to Greg Bell on a short hop.
00:59:09And that'll bring out a few boos.
00:59:12Well, and it probably should bring out the boos.
00:59:14Because that's not a play that's really going to get you yardage.
00:59:17He had two wide receivers down long.
00:59:19And he just didn't throw it to him.
00:59:21He just is not attacking the offense.
00:59:23He's having a good day, statistic-wise.
00:59:25But he has got to be able to throw to the butlers and the Andre Reeds.
00:59:30And Eason Rameson.
00:59:32The people that can get deep.
00:59:34Those statistics are somewhat misleading.
00:59:38Well, to tell you the truth, Dave, he's had great statistics,
00:59:40or at least good statistics, for the first three games.
00:59:43And they've only put one touchdown up on the board.
00:59:46Four wide receivers in, 12 seconds left in the half.
00:59:49Fourth down.
00:59:54Third down, rather.
00:59:55And that's Reed on the catch.
00:59:57Great extension for a first down.
00:59:59No, they say it's incomplete.
01:00:03Well, that's what he should have done the play before.
01:00:05Because that would have been in field goal range had he made it.
01:00:08Now it's going to bring up a fourth down.
01:00:10There's only five seconds on the clock.
01:00:12And they're going to have to probably punt it now.
01:00:14The big decision is whether just to have a running play,
01:00:16where he can just kind of run around so you just don't have the long punt return.
01:00:20I would look for them just to either drop on the ball or just try to run the ball out.
01:00:26But if they don't execute this play for five seconds,
01:00:29it's going to bring in Tony Franklin, the man that I said could kick so long.
01:00:32He kicked two 60-yard field goals, two 60-yard plus field goals, in one game in college.
01:00:38So they have got to run this ball for five seconds.
01:00:43Patriots going to come on this?
01:00:45Absolutely. They're bringing the whole team on this one.
01:00:48And the Pats take a timeout with five seconds left.
01:00:51Hoping that they have their one last shot here in the first half.
01:00:55Well, if they can get him now, what Farragamo should probably do
01:00:58is hand the ball off to, say, Craig Bell or someone like that,
01:01:03or just do something where it's going to take five seconds.
01:01:05Run backwards, 8, 10, 15 yards.
01:01:08But that doesn't help anybody's statistics, that's for sure.
01:01:14So the situation is this.
01:01:16The New England Patriots leading at 10 to 7,
01:01:19five seconds left in the first half,
01:01:21and the Buffalo Bills with a fourth down and 20 at their own 45.
01:01:28Boy, don't you know Axe is going to be bragging in NFL 85 at halftime.
01:01:32I don't know how Ahmad and Bob are going to live with him at halftime over this.
01:01:38Well, the job of their head coach, Kay Stevens,
01:01:40is to keep his job and have some semblance of stability.
01:01:45This is going to be an interesting play here to see what happens.
01:01:48No, they're not going to punt it.
01:01:49No, they're not going to punt it.
01:01:50They're going with four wide receivers.
01:02:01Going for the tip play, and it didn't work.
01:02:06Well, that was the long pass to use the five seconds up,
01:02:09and in case there was any interception, of course, it would have been run back.
01:02:13But they did use up the five seconds.
01:02:15Well, I'm sure some New England Patriots fans had nightmares of a couple of years ago.
01:02:19In fact, it was the last time the Buffalo Bills defeated the New England Patriots.
01:02:23The Patriots have won five straight in this rivalry,
01:02:26but Roland Hooks catches a pass in the end zone that was deflected off of four or five hands
01:02:31in a memorable afternoon in the fog in Buffalo, and that one smacked the Patriots.
