00:00I'm cruising down Interstate 5 in California's Central Valley in our 2024 Hyundai IONIQ 6
00:06when suddenly a warning pops up on the screen.
00:10Range at 10%.
00:12Charge immediately.
00:14Vehicle performance impacted.
00:17Sounds scary, right?
00:18But I wasn't too worried.
00:20I'd already mapped out a fast Electrify America charger about 20 miles away.
00:25Still, I couldn't help but wonder what if I miscalculated.
00:29Luckily, I made it to the charger with 8% left.
00:33This was just one of the many small decisions I had to make on this trip from Seattle to Los Angeles.
00:39Which chargers to stop at, how far to push the range, whether to charge to 80% or 100%.
00:45All things you don't really think about when driving a gas car.
00:49Our big question?
00:51How far can you actually drive an IONIQ 6 before needing to recharge?
00:55On paper, the long-range model claims 361 miles of EPA-rated range.
01:01In reality?
01:03Not even close.
01:05Leaving Seattle, I drove through cold, rainy weather and big elevation changes near Mead.
01:10Shasta.
01:11That combination ate into the range.
01:14At one point, I started with 100% charge showing 301 miles of range.
01:20But after 216 miles, I was already down to 8% battery.
01:24Where did the missing miles go?
01:27The cold?
01:28The mountains?
01:29The rain?
01:31Probably all of it.
01:32I charged only at Electrify America fast chargers to keep things consistent.
01:38A typical charge from 31% to 100% took 52 minutes, cost $36, and added 57 kWh.
01:47In total, I spent $180 charging from Seattle to LA.
01:52Not exactly cheaper than gas.
01:54In fact, a Hyundai Sonata Hybrid could have made the trip with one tank of fuel.
01:59That said, the IONIQ 6 is a comfortable, quiet, high-tech car.
02:05But range anxiety?
02:07It's real.
02:08And even though this car promises 361 miles, real-world conditions knocked that number down
02:14sometimes by a lot.
02:16We'll keep testing in different conditions to see if we can get closer to that EPA range.
02:21But for now, remember.
02:23With EVE's, your mileage W ILL vary.
