Professor Hamid Ghany says a very potent factor in the election was making it a working-class election through the support of the labour movement.

He also says a major signpost for this new government will be the budget presented to the people.

00:00By the time we get to the end of August into the beginning of September I think
00:04it's time for the budget. All eyes will be on whoever the Minister of Finance is
00:09and what budget the government is going to come with. He believes the budget is
00:14where the government will be able to demonstrate if it can put its money
00:18where its mouth is. I think it's first big signpost along the way will be the
00:23budget. That's where a lot of the promises that have been made you know
00:29will be addressed and everyone is going to be looking at that. Professor Ghani
00:34notes that among the promises were the removal of property tax and an increase
00:39in the starting percentage of wage negotiations. According to him during the
00:45campaign the PNM said it would be impossible for the UNC to fulfill those
00:50promises. However, Professor Ghani says that may not quite be the case. In many
00:56respects what was going on as well is that money was appearing out of the
01:01woodwork late into the campaign. So I think that you know if it is that you
01:07know they were in government and they were able to see from the inside that
01:11that kind of money would have been available to double food cards and to
01:15you know address the issue of sudden forex availability for businesses then maybe
01:22there's there's something there for them to to have a look at and to be able to
01:26pronounce upon. He also believes that the pay hike given to the previous
01:30government added significantly to what occurred at the polls. There was a lot of
01:36anger on the ground outside there about that salary review commission adoption of the
01:42report and I don't know if the PNM was aware of the extent to which persons were
01:48reacting against that in contrast to some of the 4% offerings. Nicole M Romney, TV6 News.
