00:00The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture added the Calorite pear, or Pyrus calorena,
00:08commonly called the Bradford pear tree, to a list of noxious weeds, plants that cannot
00:16be legally sold or cultivated in the state.
00:19Wow, so it adds the list that is populated by the durian and other?
00:24Well, no, no, it's considered invasive.
00:27Oh! So this is the, these are the semen trees.
00:30What? Oh, I didn't know that.
00:32Yeah, so the popular non-native flowering fruit tree naturalizes, spreading from planted landscapes,
00:40crowding out other plants, and disrupting native ecosystems.
00:43So the semen tree is considered an invasive species?
00:46Check that, Nick, double check and make sure the Bradford pear is the one we're talking about.
00:50If you don't know, this is a plant, a tree, I guess, that every year,
00:57emits a smell that many have said, and I agree, smells like semen.
01:02Mm-hmm.
01:02Yeah, it's them.
01:03That's, okay, so this is it.
01:04So the, uh, it apparently, it, it, it's, uh, crowds out other plants, disrupts native ecosystems.
01:10The ban on sale and cultivation will take effect on February 9th, with enforcement phased in
01:16over two years.
01:17I'm surprised, because, like, um, landscapers will sell a lot of these.
01:21Oh, yeah.
01:21They'll use them in, you know, in, in, uh, office parks and, and people's backyards and
01:25whatever.
01:25So, uh, this is, you know, a moneymaker for a lot of those places.
01:28I'm really surprised they came down with a ban.
01:30Well, it's, it's a beautiful tree.
01:31Yeah.
01:32And when it does create that scent, it's got these beautiful white blooms.
01:36It's just gorgeous.
01:37Yeah, it looks gorgeous.
01:37I have three of them in my backyard.
01:39I have a weeping vagina in my backyard.
01:41Oh, my goodness.
01:42And it's, well, you know what it smells like, but it's, it's just, it's beautiful.
01:46So, okay, um, the, uh, now you got me thinking of Pussy Willows.
01:53Uh, the, I wouldn't necessarily categorize this scent as noxious, though.
01:58I mean.
01:59It is, it is different.
02:01If you are around a bunch of them, like, I, I have been in proximity to several of them
02:07and it's, like, overpowering.
02:09Now, not noxious to the scent of, I, I can't breathe.
02:12Yeah.
02:12Right.
02:12But definitely, like, wow, this is overpowering.
02:15So, you know, but, but it's apparently, it, it, I guess it, it, um, it's taking up too
02:21much space.
02:21It's, it's invading the area and it's not native in the area.
02:25So, according to the agricultural secretary, uh, the calorie pear is, uh, another non-native
02:32plant that was brought to the country for its beauty and rapid growth without regard to
02:36its long-term potential harm to our environment and food supply.
02:39I didn't realize it was that sort of situation.
02:42I, I, I, Nick, as you rightfully point out, it, it, it ends up being used in garden plants.
02:48Oh, yeah.
02:48You know?
02:49They're sold a lot.
02:50And, yeah.
02:51Another one that, uh, I've heard people complain about because of the smell is the, the ginkgo
02:54tree.
02:55And they're really pretty as well.
02:56Especially in the fall, they turn, like, a bright yellow.
02:58But people sometimes refer to them as the stinko tree.
03:00And, and I believe, like, it's only the male of the species that, that stinks or whatever.
03:05But, yeah.
03:06Um.
03:06We have a butthole bush by our front door.
03:10And it's, the flowers are wonderful, but it does.
03:12What does it smell like?
03:13It smells like a butthole.
03:14Okay, yeah.
03:18Is it year round or only in the spring?
03:20No.
03:21It's like, it's like for one week.
03:22Oh, my.
03:24You can deal with that.
03:25Is your butthole open?
03:27Don't come over.
03:27It's butthole week.
03:28Is your butthole sprouting?
03:29Yes.
03:30Oh, my God.
03:30Butthole.
03:34The butthole's open.
03:36What's your.
03:36And the scent is.
03:37You've got to come by.
03:38It's intoxicating.
03:39One week out of the year when the butthole's open.
03:40We'll sit between that and the semen plant.
03:44All right.
03:44All right.
