00:41may surprise you here's the response from WXYZ TV in New Hudson and right behind these garage doors
00:48is Great Lakes cremation now last week when it was really really hot people who work nearby
00:52started complaining about the smell the Lion Township Fire Department came out and sure
00:59enough there was an odor so it contacted the health department and what the health department
01:04and others learned about the laws as they responded to this is quite surprising the Oakland County Health
01:10Department sent out inspectors to respond to the complaint about strong odors and flies near the
01:15crematorium that's in a commercial and industrial area off Grand River in New Hudson the health
01:20department says it found no imminent health hazard the health department is not in charge of enforcing
01:25crematorium rules and regulations so it contacted the state the Michigan Department of Licensing and
01:30Regulatory Affairs inspected the facility and found no violations it turns out while the law requires
01:36bodies to be cremated within 60 days it does not require refrigeration I reached out to people who
01:42complained about the odor they declined to do an interview but said the law shocked them workers at the
01:48crematorium say about 40 bodies were there at the time of the complaint and about half were refrigerated the
01:54other half had just been delivered people who were here told me off camera that they believe this
01:58problem was because of the extreme temperatures we saw last week and I can tell you that right now as I
02:04stand here I do not smell any strong foul odors Kim Russell seven action news all right so bodies have to
02:12be cremated within 60 days in Michigan but they don't have to be refrigerated until then that's insane
