Minister of Trade and Industry Paula Gopee Scoon says it is important to note that this country got the minimum of 10% with the new Trump tariffs.

She says the focus now must be on capacity building, trade agreements and production.

00:00Many of our imports come from Europe as well. I'm talking about our cheeses, some of our meats, etc.
00:07And so some items would be impacted again, but the drive is towards growing what we eat and eating what we grow.
00:18And of course, it emphasizes the importance of buying local.
00:22She notes that the manufacturing sector will also play a vital role in the way forward.
00:28Minister Gopiskun explains that there needs to be, among other things,
00:34a wider variety of products being made available for the local and foreign markets, as well as the upscaling of production.
00:43And of course, ramping up of market intelligence and entry into diversified export markets.
00:52It also calls for full utilization of our trade agreements, trade agreements which are not only with the U.S., number one.
01:00But of course, we do have the CBI arrangement with the Caribbean-based initiative with the U.S.,
01:05but we also have a host of other trade agreements multilaterally, bilaterally.
01:11The trade minister further tells the Morning Edition about the creation of new jobs in the business process outsourcing sector.
01:19We have been able to hire 3,000, more than 3,000.
01:24I believe the figure is 3,500 or between 3,000, 3,500 persons hired, young persons hired within that sector.
01:33As I said, we've had, we are now up to 11 entities, nine being foreign.
01:40And with the ability, five of them are in fact expanding.
01:43Minister Gopiskun says she expects that by the end of 2025, over 4,000 persons would have been hired.
