Minister Gatsby Dolly tells the TV6 Morning Edition,
00:04
education must be relevant to the times in which we live.
00:08
As such, she says, the Ministry has cut back on scholarships
00:13
and increased bursaries to also highlight the students
00:17
who excel in creative arts.
00:19
She tells us of training programs for teachers
00:22
to equip them for the students of today,
00:26
as well as the introduction of a new technology unit
00:29
to help teachers relate to pupils in this digital world.
00:34
The Minister also notes that student performance
00:37
is back to pre-COVID levels,
00:39
adding that there is a noticeable reduction in school violence.
00:44
The data is showing us that our students are making better choices
00:47
in terms of how to deal with conflict.
00:50
So while this is not something that is a magic wand that can be wielded,
00:54
it takes consistent and dedicated implementation
00:59
to be able to change.
01:01
Our data is showing us that we have signs of improvement.
01:05
She further notes that while there have been several concerns raised
01:09
over the youthfulness of the SCA exam
01:12
and the impact it has on students,
01:15
there has been no actual consensus.
01:17
When you actually look at the situation
01:19
and everyone is able to contribute,
01:21
there is no overwhelming land bide about changing SBA.
01:26
People have very strong views about keeping it
01:29
and people have very strong views about changing it,
01:32
and it's generally about a 50-50 actually.
01:35
As it relates to repairs at schools and infrastructural issues,
01:39
the Minister explains that it is an ongoing
01:42
and ever-evolving situation due to the age of the school buildings.
01:48
In terms of the allocation SBA, we see that increasing
01:52
because as work is done on one area,
01:57
another area comes into focus.
01:59
So you may change the pipe to be able to make
02:04
a more reliable water supply to a school.
02:08
You change the pipes in one area,
02:10
and therefore the pressure may cause pipes to be used in another area.
02:14
Gatsby Dolly says the Ministry recently allocated $175 million
02:21
into fixing 27 schools that are over 60 years old.
