Should Wetherspoon return to the town centre?

In its weekly voxpop, the Advertiser heard people’s views on whether Wetherspoons should come back to the town centre or not.

00:10Everybody went there, all classes, all types, all incomes, and we need it back.

00:16There was a Wetherspoons, yeah, because it's cut down the places you can go.

00:23You've only got a couple of places in town now left, haven't you?

00:29You know, so it would be nice if they did come back, yeah.

00:35Well, we don't normally go to Wetherspoons very often, but this one here has been in this

00:41little town for a while. It just depends on what the local people like, really.

00:46It would be good if it attracts enough people, then obviously a Wetherspoons would be lovely,

00:51but we'd also like to see that the town is lively with lots of places for people to go to and sit

00:57and have cafes and eat and be together and be merry. That's the kind of feel that we would like

01:02in Newark. I agree. Yeah? Affirm no. I mean, when you look at Newark, steeped in history,

01:09beautiful old buildings, if anything, we need to be turning it back to that. Investing money in

01:14the town centre, attracting trade, attracting better commerce, and I don't think Wetherspoons

01:19lends itself to that. You just get completely the wrong type of folk in there, and it puts

01:23other people off. I think a Wetherspoons here would be great because it's always a hive of

01:30activity. There's always a lot of buzz, great value for money, and the experience that I've

01:36had at Wetherspoons has always been great. Loud, a lot of young people there, people having a good

01:44time, and I think Newark is on the up. I think there's growth here, and there's renewal here,

01:50and I think Wetherspoons could play a great part in that, so I hope it happens. I like it because

01:57they have good beer, and the food is usually good. The people, as you know, we're short of

02:03restaurants. There's no fish shops in there. The fish shops have been shut for youngs,

02:08and it needs something to get the people in.
