Body cams rolled out in anti-social behaviour operation

Nottinghamshire Police have provided Hawtonville businesses with body worn cameras to help drive down youth related anti-social behaviour.

00:00We take all incidents of antisocial behaviour very seriously.

00:04It impacts everybody's day-to-day life.

00:07If they're trying to do the shopping or go out for a coffee with their friends,

00:11you do not want to be interrupted by large groups of youths trying to intimidate people

00:15and just causing a general nuisance.

00:17We identified issues at Heron Foods in Newark.

00:21They were having a lot of issues with youths going in and out in large groups,

00:25causing other people to the public and staff the harassment, alarm and distress.

00:30So we implemented new body cameras to issue to the staff members

00:34that they can wear during their shift times to act as a deterrent

00:38and it gives us that extra evidence that we might need should they commit a crime.

00:42We've had really good feedback from both companies that the body cameras have been issued to.

00:46For example, Heron Foods, they were issued the cameras in November.

00:50Since that time, I cannot recall any incident being reported to us since then.

00:55It's definitely decreased.

00:57We don't want to be arresting young people whatsoever

00:59I mean, if they've committed a crime, we will deal with that

01:02but it will be proportionate and we'll make sure that they're dealt with in the correct way.

01:06Building the relationships with these young people is really important.

01:09I think if they learn to trust us and work with us

01:12because then they will see that we are actually trying to help them

01:15and encourage them to make better choices.
