00:00Mahmood Abubekir Taib has expressed shock and annoyance after learning that Chahiyah
00:06Mata Sarawak Berhad has initiated fresh legal action against him and six others over alleged
00:12breaches tied to the company's digital transformation project.
00:16The announcement follows a recent claim by Chahiyah Mata's group managing director
00:20Sulaiman Abdul Rahman Taib that he may also be the victim of a boardroom coup at the hands
00:25of Mahmood.
00:26Mahmood told FMT he was confident he will be vindicated in court.
00:30He also said the development has emboldened him in his quest to set things right at Chahiyah
00:34Mata Sarawak.
00:36The new suit comes just over a week after Sulaiman filed an affidavit on Chahiyah Mata's
00:41behalf last week opposing Mahmood's application for access to the accounting records and other
00:46documents of five wholly-owned Chahiyah Mata subsidiaries.
00:50Mahmood, 61, and Sulaiman, 56, are sons of the late Abdul Taib Mahmood, Sarawak's former
00:57governor and chief minister.
00:59On March 5, Mahmood filed an originating summons under sections 245, subsections 4 and 8 of
01:05the Companies Act 2016 which allowed directors to inspect company records and empowered the
01:11court to allow an auditor access to the documents provided the information acquired is only
01:16shared with that director.
01:18Mahmood says the restrictions imposed on him by the company are calculated to deny him
01:23his right to access the records.
01:25Sulaiman, however, claims that Mahmood is looking to remove him as a director.
01:30He also accuses Mahmood of seeking access with the ulterior purpose of benefiting third
01:34parties who are involved in various lawsuits with the Chahiyah Mata group.
01:39He also argues that Mahmood's right to inspect the documents was not absolute and that it
01:43no longer exists as he was no longer a director of the subsidiaries at the time his application
01:48was filed.
