Why is there a lack of EV Chargers in the UK?

Why are some businesses choosing not to go a electric despite the cleaner results for the environment and lower running costs?

00:00Across the UK and Ireland it's reported that there are around 12,320 EV chargers on streets.

00:09There are reportedly 1,097 chargers in London, but only 754 across Wales. There's 1,074 chargers

00:17in Yorkshire and the Humber, but only 785 in the North East.

00:21Interestingly, as of early this year, the UK has over 1.3 million registered EVs. This

00:26draws attention to the disparity between EV use and available chargers. According to

00:31a report by Vauxhall, the UK's electric vehicle infrastructure targets are too broad

00:38and should be more specific in order to accurately measure progress in different regions.

00:43Furthermore, the business is inviting people across the UK to register streets which urgently

00:49need to see chargers installed.

00:53Already 12,000 streets have been logged as needing on-street chargers. The government

00:58also recently announced that employers will have access to funding to help pay towards

01:04the installation of workplace chargers for another year. This comes as they said they

01:10would prolong the grant scheme. It was found that almost 60,000 charge points have been

01:16installed by employers thanks to funding from the workplace charging scheme since it was

01:21launched in 2016. Yet the Parliamentary Spending Watchdog has found that the rollout of electric

01:27vehicle chargers across Britain is, quote, patchy, behind deadline and ignores the needs

01:33of disabled drivers. Furthermore, a report published by the Public Accounts Committee

01:39said that the charging points needed to give drivers confidence for the switch to EVs was

01:45still lacking, even on Britain's biggest roads. While the PAC report said the government was

01:51on track to reach a promised target of 300,000 charging points by 2030, there were stark

01:57regional differences, with too few installed outside South East England and London. The

02:03PAC chair, Geoffrey Clinton-Brown, said it was imperative that delays were addressed

02:09and no groups of drivers were left behind in the switch to electric. A committee also

02:14found that drivers with disabilities are deterred from using EV points due to the location and

02:20setup of charge points. MPs reported that there is not a charge point in the UK which

02:26is fully compliant with accessibility standards.
