Hello and welcome to your transport update for the week beginning January 27th 2025.
00:06
My name is Theo Cuson-Betts and this is Manchester World.
00:08
Now there are two major pieces of transport news for this week that require your attention,
00:13
so let's jump straight into them.
00:15
Firstly, one of the main roads on the way out of Manchester city centre is about to
00:19
be closed for up to a month, and that's as of today.
00:24
Now this is the southbound carriageway of the Bridgewater Viaduct, which is the primary
00:28
route from Deansgate to Chester Road and Trafford.
00:32
The closure is expected to be in place for at least two weeks, but it has been said that
00:37
there's scope for it to be extended by another couple of weeks, taking it up to a month if
00:40
the work to widen the pavement runs over.
00:44
Now the closure is coming as part of a wider drive to make Deansgate much more pedestrian
00:49
friendly, with Councillor Tracey Rawlins stating that the closure is necessary to ensure the
00:54
safety of the workers.
00:56
And she's thanked the people of Manchester for their patience.
00:59
Now a diversion is in place, but it has been suggested that it's best to plan your journey
01:03
ahead of time to make sure you don't get caught short.
01:06
Maybe trying to avoid that area completely could be the best way of avoiding getting
01:10
stuck in traffic.
01:11
Secondly, another month-long delay is about to exist on the city's Metrolink network,
01:16
with journeys between Eccles and Media City being halted between the 1st and 25th February.
01:22
This is because of work going on at the Weast Tram Stop, which is the start of a range of
01:26
products that's set to be carried out on the tram service this year, funded by Labour's
01:30
City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement.
01:33
This will allow the Metrolink to run smoothly and reliably for years into the future.
01:37
Now there is a replacement bus service running between the affected stops, with B network
01:42
buses also operating between them.
01:44
So there should still be ways to get around, you shouldn't be hamstrung too much hopefully.
01:48
Again, please make sure you're planning your journeys well in advance of setting off, to
01:52
make sure that you're not stuck at the mercy of cancelled or delayed services.
01:56
Make sure you know where you're going and how to get there, and follow Manchester World for more.
