What is Blue Monday?

With the third Monday of January being labelled as ‘Blue Monday’, we delved into where the idea came from and the meaning behind it.

00:00Hello and welcome to Manchester World, as we buckle in to attack Blue Monday.

00:03Now, for those who are unaware, Blue Monday is a concept that was suggested by a travel company

00:07back in 2005, stating that the third Monday of January is the most depressing day of the year.

00:12Part of that comes from the weather, the end of the festive period, as well as motivation levels,

00:17which are typically lower at the start of the year.

00:19Now, it goes almost without saying that there's nothing actually particularly depressing about

00:24the day itself, despite today's weather being a bit miserable.

00:27In fact, many mental health charities, such as Mind, are keen to dispel today's association

00:31with depression, stating that people can obviously be depressed any day of the year.

00:34Without doubt, though, there is some truth in the suggestion that this period of January can

00:38be particularly tough. The lack of motivation, the miserable weather, and a plethora of other

00:42factors can really affect someone's mood. With that in mind, we're going to end this

00:46video by reminding you to allow yourself a little treat every now and again.
