00:00Amid the Los Angeles wildfires, some 2025 award shows like the Critics' Choice Awards have been
00:05postponed, while others, like the Grammys, are proceeding as planned and set to raise
00:10funds for wildfire relief efforts. But this isn't the first time Hollywood award shows
00:14have been delayed or almost delayed amid historical events. We're taking a look at
00:18the times major Hollywood award shows have been postponed throughout history.
00:23In 1968, Martin Luther King Jr. was killed on April 4th, just days before the Oscars were set
00:29to take place on April 8th. Several big-name stars slated to appear at the ceremony, like Sidney
00:34Poitier, were also planning on attending King's funeral the next day on April 9th. So the Academy
00:40moved the ceremony to April 10th. The broadcast opened with a tribute to King from the Academy's
00:45then-president, Gregory Peck. It was his work and his dedication that brought about the increasing
00:53awareness of all men that we must unite. In 1981, President Ronald Reagan was shot and
01:01wounded in an assassination attempt the same day the Oscars were supposed to air.
01:05Producers opted to postpone the show by one day, with host Johnny Carson opening the ceremony like
01:11this. The Academy, ABC Television, and all of us connected with the show felt because of the
01:16uncertain outcome, as of this time yesterday, it would have been inappropriate to stage a
01:22celebration. In 2001, the Emmys were postponed following the September 11th terrorist attacks.
01:28The ceremony that was set to air that same month was then pushed to November. It's also worth
01:33noting that in 2003, the U.S. invaded Iraq just days before the Oscars. While producers debated
01:39postponing the show, they ultimately decided to proceed, but there was no red carpet.
01:44During the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2021 Golden Globes were postponed and moved from early
01:50January to February 28th, the date that had originally been set for that year's Oscars.
01:55The show saw nominees appear virtually. The 2021 Oscars were then delayed until April 25th and
02:01held at Union Station instead of the Dolby Theater. And the 2021 Grammys were postponed
02:05and moved from January 31st to March 14th. The next year, the 2022 Grammys were postponed and
02:12moved from late January to early April due to a spike in COVID-19 cases driven by the Omicron
02:17variant. And most recently, the 2023 Emmy Awards were delayed and moved from September of that
02:22year to early January 2024 due to the 2023 writers and actor strikes. For all of the
