For those not familiar, spin is a high intensity, relatively low-impact workout which is designed to test your limits. Exercise helps to release dopamine, also known as the happy hormone, not only helping us physically, but improving on mental health too.

00:00It's that time of year again where we are all hitting the gym. But fitness looks like
00:06different things to different people. We are here at Babe in Kirby to find out about all
00:13of their classes.
00:14The gym opened its first site in Wavertree in 2024 and has now opened a new space in
00:19Kirby.
00:20So across both sites we've got Reformer Pilates, we've got Hot Pilates, Yoga, we've got Bar
00:28classes, we've got Boxing, all types of gym classes, Kettlebells, Strength classes, High
00:33Rocks, all that type of stuff. Then we've got Spin, we've got Pole Fitness, we do Aerial
00:38Hoop classes, we now do Silks. So if anyone wants to be a performing artist doing Silks
00:44from the sky they can learn how to do that with us.
00:47The NHS recommends that adults should do some type of physical activity every day. Exercise
00:51just once or twice a week can reduce the risk of heart disease or stroke.
00:56It's just so good for the mind. It's waking up in the morning and getting a bit of happiness
01:02by working out and doing something that's for you. Gets you healthier, makes you build
01:07healthy habits, makes you stick to it a bit longer.
01:11Exercise helps to release dopamine, also known as the happy hormone, not only helping us
01:15physically but improving on mental health too.
01:19You know 15 years ago in the city, the women's area of the gym and the ones that we used
01:24to go to was absolutely tiny. It was like a school mat where kids used to read books.
01:29It was tiny and now we've got huge, huge facilities all over the city dedicated to
01:36women and dedicated as a safe space for people. I think it's amazing.
01:39Low energy levels and lack of motivation affect us all at some points.
01:45The reason we wanted to offer so many different types of things is because personally I just
01:50don't like to run. I hate to run. Sian loves to run.
01:54And it's okay. We offer different things because you might come and try loads of different
01:59things and go, do you know what, I hated that but I loved that and I'd maybe try that one
02:03again and that's why we wanted to offer it where fitness can be a million different things.
02:09It doesn't just have to be running a marathon or picking up really heavy weights all the time.
02:14Sian is putting me through my paces with a solo spin class.
02:18For those not familiar, this is a high intensity, relatively low impact workout
02:23which is designed to test your limits. This kind of class is made to build endurance and
02:28strength through various interval routines on a specially designed bike.
02:33I'll tell you what, it's been a good while since I've done a spin class actually.
02:37Honestly, I've got a bit of a fear of them after I fell off a spin bike and badly sprained my ankle
02:43many years ago but as they say, you've got to get right back on there and I had an absolutely
02:49fabulous time doing that spin class. Thank you so much to Sian
02:54for encouraging me. I'm absolutely shattered now but I feel great.
