00:00Dame Sarah Mullally has made history after she was confirmed.
00:05as the first female Archbishop of Canterbury. The ceremony at St Paul's Catella
00:10Cathedral in central London also confirmed the 63 year old as the first
00:15woman to assume the spiritual leadership of the Church of England and its nearly
00:20500 year old history. Dame Sarah who was married to
00:25Eamon Mullally and is a mother of two is now officially the 106th Archbishop.
00:30of Canterbury. She was named in October after her predecessor Justin
00:35Webley stepped down in November of 2024 after an independent
00:40review found he could and should have reported decades-long abuse of
00:45men and young boys by his former friend, former cancer nurse.
00:50Dame Sarah officially took the responsibilities of her new job on Wednesday
00:55the 28th of January. Here is what Dame Sarah had to say
01:00ahead of her appointment.
01:02Oh gosh, so slightly, still slightly surprised.
01:05I was trying to get my head around it, a bit excited, but also actually there's a real
01:09sense of peace.
01:10You know, my faith in God, but also
01:15offering the experience that they've had in the past as a nurse.
01:20as a Bishop of London give me, I think, a sense of which for such a time as this.
01:25Well, I think partly I'm still trying to get my head around being the
01:28Archbishop of Canterbury, but I do reckon
01:30recognise that it's significant to be the first woman. I was the first woman.
01:35to be the Bishop of London, so I've had a bit of experience. And I think for me, the
01:40the real importance, I think, is, in a sense, the role
01:45model I can offer really. And I, I go into lots of schools and meet, often meet.
01:50a female student, and they sort of sit up and pay attention. Now they don't want to be the Bishop of London or the
01:55Archbishop of Canterbury often, but it does enable them to think actually that, you know, that may be something
02:00that may be something I could do. And the other, the other side of it, there will be lots of people who are
02:05absolutely thrilled, thrilled today as well. Sarah's chosen because she is the right person for the
02:10job. The fact that she's a woman is where the joy comes because it shows how the church has moved.
02:15I've watched from the days when women couldn't be ordained priest, then we have
02:20to allow women to become bishops. I know the fact that she has become the Archbishop.
02:25shows that the church is actually accepting the role of women's ministry.
02:30a young 15th century, and she's now basically searching, got yeah,
02:33the client of the church's來了, actually, even we have tod
02:37it only, the seller she exists. I mean it's a commitment to the church as a person.
02:38The client of the church is about how the church should be.
02:55It always coaches too, because we were able to see this throughout the shop today.
