The highly anticipated Gemas-Johor Bahru Electrified Double-Track Rail project (EDTP) is on track for completion by the third quarter of this year, says Transport Minister Anthony Loke.

He said the project, once completed, would facilitate trade services between Kuala Lumpur and Johor Bahru, positioning it as key catalyst for enhancing connectivity and driving economic growth in the region.

00:00The questions still linger in the minds of investors, you know, whenever I talk to investors coming to Johor and Iskandar
00:06around basically the connectivity in Johor itself, basically connecting to the RTS.
00:11And maybe you could share some light really on your thinking around what happens there.
00:16Well, the RTS is designed as a mass transit connecting Johor Bahru to Singapore.
00:23The capacity is 10,000 per direction per hour.
00:27So basically what we need to do and need to overcome is how do we create a system,
00:34a public transport system to support the usage of public transport from Bukit Cina.
00:41It means that we want to discourage people from driving their motorcycles or cars all the way to Johor Bahru.
00:47So they should pick public transport outside of Johor Bahru.
00:51So there are a couple of plans in place.
00:53Of course, right now we have a stage bus system in Johor where the ridership is one of the highest in the country.
00:59We are planning to expand the stage bus services to have more buses on the routes,
01:05to support more areas, to support more routes.
01:08Besides that, of course, I mentioned this now, we are completing our double track project.
01:14So that itself gives us a new railway track.
01:18So that railway track was supposedly designed just for intercity travel between Johor Bahru to KL and Johor Bahru to the East Coast.
01:29What we thought of it is that we really have to track why don't we provide commuter services as well.
01:35So we would like to introduce commuter services just like in KL we have KTM commuter.
01:41We have the commuter services serving the corridor.
01:45Say for example from Kluang all the way to Johor Bahru.
01:48So that is one of the low hanging fruit that we can do.
01:52We already have the track, we just need to procure more train for the commuter services.
01:57Besides that, we are also looking at how to connect between Pasir Gudang to BTP, Port of Tanjung Pelepas.
02:07Currently there is a railway line connecting Pasir Gudang to BTP.
02:11It is a single track but it is quite an old track.
02:15What we are looking at in the medium term is to upgrade that track and possibly to make it as a double track.
02:21So that we can also provide passenger services between Pasir Gudang to BTP.
02:27But there is one area which is very central in that corridor is Kempas.
02:33So Kempas has been earmarked by the Ministry of Transport as one potential growth area.
02:38So we have a big train station there and there is a piece of land where we want to develop into TOD.
02:45So that can become an interchange between people who are living in the Pasir Gudang area to travel to Johor Bahru via Kempas.
02:54So that is also in the pipeline.
