OPPOSITION LEADER: POLITICAL GIMMICKRY
The Opposition leader calls the State of Emergency political gimmickry and condemns the business groups throwing support in government's direction after condemning the same call she made for this measure in January of this year.

00:00Opposition leader Kamala Bassad-Bissessa recalls the condemnation she faced after calling for an SOE in January of this year.
00:09She says many lives could have been saved had the government heeded her advice.
00:14Without certain restrictions, the opposition leader, however, says many concerns arise.
00:20They come at this 11th hour with the SOE, but again, they say it's no curfews, it's not a restricted state of emergency.
00:31What happens when you use the same police officers, police bandit dressed up in police uniforms and so on?
00:38They could come into your home without a warrant. What happens? Who is going to take care of us?
00:44Bassad-Bissessa says when it comes to the rationale for the state of emergency, the ministers at today's media briefing contradicted themselves.
00:52On the one hand, Heinz concentrated on the numbers of the crimes and the murders.
01:01Whereas in the beginning and after Heinz spoke, he emphasized what he called high-powered weapons, reprisals.
01:14So I don't know if their concern is safety and security or if this is just a political gimmickry.
01:23She says only after having sight of the regulations will one be able to compare the 2011 state of emergency to today's.
01:41But there is one glaring point to note.
01:52We'll be going to an election with this kind of state of emergency where police can walk into your house without warrant, do searches on your properties, confiscate your property and so on.
02:03I look forward to the parliamentary debate so that we can get some answers to these questions.
02:08And the million dollar question.
02:10Where was the Prime Minister? This is a serious matter.
02:14The Prime Minister is nowhere to be seen at such an important press conference.
02:19Instead, we put out two failed ministers to come to say, yes, we're declaring a state of emergency.
02:26They did not have any details.
02:28They say it was carefully considered.
02:30But at the same time, they're saying, well, we did it this morning, last night.
02:34She maintains the government has no cohesive plan to tackle crime and adds the same quote unquote shameless business groups that are now supporting this SOE were the ones who condemned her when she called for a proper SOE in January of 2024.
02:52Bassad Bassasa says the groups have no decency or shame and all they care about is their greed for money and not for the citizens who were murdered in 2024.
03:04And that's what she's been saying.
03:06She's been saying, well, we're going to do this.
