Issues with train fare evasion: £100 fine for the west of England

Thousands of rail passengers could receive a fare refund after a major court ruling to do with those prosecuted and fined for fare evasion. The court found that many people were privately prosecuted for travelling without a ticket.

00:00Tens of thousands of rail passengers who were prosecuted and fined for fare evasion are

00:08set to receive refunds after a court case.

00:12It is estimated that around 74,000 people could have been impacted and the Courts of

00:18Service, Department for Transport and train companies will collaborate to identify and

00:23refund those passengers.

00:27In the West of England, according to Great Western Railway, the price of penalty fares

00:32has changed.

00:33It changed from Monday 23rd January 2023 and has been enforced across the network, excluding

00:41South Wales.

00:43The penalty fare rose in 2023 from just £20 or twice the price of the single fare to the

00:50next station to £100 plus the full fare for the journey you take on that train.
