People on the street: Surge pricing in pubs

With some pubs now charging higher prices during peak times, we went out into Manchester to ask people about whether they could understand why business are turning to the tactic.

00:00Hi, I'm Theo, and this is People on the Street. Today I'm asking people about pubs.

00:05Now, some pubs are talking about introducing surge pricing, which means that the cost of beer goes up when it's more busy,

00:10and it obviously becomes cheaper when it's a bit more quiet.

00:13We want to know if people think that's fair, whether they understand why pubs would want to do it.

00:17I don't think it's fair because they're already charging quite a lot, like in general, and increasing price even if it's busier.

00:24Because since it's busier, people will go to the pub anyway, and they will have to pay a higher price.

00:32It's more money for them, with the way that beer prices are in general, compared to the rest that you've been talking about.

00:39It's probably already very high. Some places now are kind of getting to almost London prices.

00:45It's not really fair. I get why, I guess it's to control crowds, but I don't know if that would work.

00:52I feel like it depends how big the difference is, but I don't think I'd go home just because the drinks are slightly more expensive.

00:59I'd probably still pay it.
