00:00The Victoria Gallery and Museum's latest exhibition explores the legacies of British colonial
00:05rule of India and experiences of people of Indian heritage living in Britain.
00:11Liverpool is one of the most friendliest cities and I can say from my own experience, having
00:16been over a year here in Liverpool, that it's been absolutely fantastic. Every person that
00:21you meet, not just in university, at the city centre or in the docks.
00:25Jasmeer Creed's oil paintings draw on her Anglo-Indian heritage to create large, colourful
00:30paintings reflecting on issues around identity. Meanwhile, Liverpool-born artist Tony Phillips
00:36uses his characteristic socially engaged drawings to look at the impact British rule had on
00:41India and its people.
00:43So I didn't want people necessarily to think, oh, you know, the British Empire was a bad
00:47thing and per se. I mean, it was a bad thing, but that's not the point because it was just
00:53no different from any other empire in that respect. It was an empire, but if we're going
00:57to learn something from it, I think we need to learn about our failings as human beings.
01:02Indian Perspectives features more than 100 works, including drawings, paintings and video.
01:07My role is to make sure that people understand something about the relationship between our
01:12historical past and the present, you know.
01:17A short film's also been commissioned for the exhibition, which features four University
01:21of Liverpool students from India discussing their life in Liverpool. From ballroom dancing
01:26to photography, the film captures the passions of these students who are studying in the
01:30city.
01:31Seeing the exhibit today is such a nice way to see how others view our culture and to
01:36take in the perception of Indian culture. So it was a great experience overall.
01:42I know there are a lot of Indian students who are very sceptical about coming to the
01:45UK at this point of time. So me, as an international student, I wanted to clear the perceptions
01:50that they have about the UK as well, and the fears and anxiety as any student who's coming
01:54down to the UK.
01:55Indian Perspectives runs until Saturday 26th of April.
