National Museums Liverpool will bring traditional crafts, folk paintings, and Peking Opera displays from Shanghai to the city. The show highlights cultural exchange and Liverpool’s historic links with China.

00:00Liverpool is set to host a major exhibition from the Shanghai Art Collection Museum this October,
00:06showcasing a wide range of traditional and contemporary craft and performance arts.
00:12The collection features ceramics, enamelware, lacquer work, jade and stone carving and metal
00:18sculpture, many recognised as national or municipal intangible cultural heritage items in China.
00:26It will also include Shanghai's folk arts, such as paper cutting, woodblock printing, regional embroidery,
00:34straw weaving and farmers' paintings, which depict rural life, landscapes, daily scenes and festive activities.
00:42The exhibition will also present traditional Peking opera costumes and painted masks,
00:48illustrating all role types, from male and female parts to painted face and comic characters,
00:55recognised as a UNESCO intangible cultural heritage, Peking opera is celebrated for its rich aesthetic
01:02language and cultural significance. Laura Pai, Director of National Museums Liverpool,
01:08says the exhibition reflects the city's long-standing connections with China and its vibrant local
01:14Chinese community, one of the oldest and largest in Europe. She adds that cultural exchange helps
01:21foster understanding, dialogue and inspiration, while also encouraging reflection on history, art and
01:28contemporary life.
