Drawing from the rich collections of the University of Liverpool and The National Archives, Lightbulb moments displays 150 objects - from archaeological finds and scientific tools to puzzles and literature.
00:00Great ideas can occur in many places, on a walk, in the shower or even in bed.
00:06Many of them come from Liverpool.
00:08A new exhibition explores the origins of some of the city's most remarkable discoveries, innovations and insights.
00:14You could make an exhibition about light bulb moments or great ideas anywhere.
00:19You can make one in Edinburgh or in Stockholm or in Tokyo because everyone has great ideas all over the world.
00:24But the things in this exhibition are from Liverpool or they've got a connection to Liverpool.
00:29And you know what, it's not that hard to find great ideas because Liverpool is a great place for having great ideas.
00:35The University of Liverpool's Victoria Gallery and Museum is welcoming visitors back into the historic Tate Hall Museum
00:42with a brand new exhibition called Lightbulb Moments.
00:45It's a celebration of the city's brightest ideas past and present and the flashes of inspiration that have helped shape our world.
00:53Every single object in this exhibition has got a link to Liverpool.
00:57Some of them are quite tenuous and some of them are really clear.
01:00So we worked in partnership with the National Archives in London who've got a big collection of mid-19th century patterns, like designs.
01:08So walking around the exhibition you get a bit of a look at what people were designing, inventing, innovating,
01:14right here in Liverpool in the 1830s to the 1880s.
01:19From archaeological finds to cutting edge science, the exhibition brings together 150 objects, including rare globes, archaeological finds and even a Victoria Parlour game reimagined by local school children.
01:32It's a board game called Bagatelle and visitors can come and play it.
01:37You can play a game from 1847 that was designed just about a mile away.
01:41We took it down to Pleasant Street Primary School.
01:44They borrowed it for a term and they did a term of work around board game design.
01:48The whole class, I guess, took that game and innovated, moved it on and reinvented it.
01:55They gave us all their designs, which we're showing on the wall in here, and one of them we've chosen and made up.
02:01And you can come and play Sophie's game in the museum.
02:04More than a traditional display light bulb moment, it's a vibrant celebration of curiosity and creativity, inviting visitors to explore how great ideas take shape and inspire them to discover their own.
02:16So when we were planning this exhibition, during the research stage, we went and talked to loads of people, visitors in the museum, academics, students in the university, people, anyone we could find.
02:27And I asked them, where do you have your great ideas?
02:30When you have a great idea, where does that come from?
02:32They told us it's a whole load of different places.
02:35A lot of people have them in the bath or in the shower.
02:38Some people when they're listening to music.
02:40A lot of people when they're going out for a walk or doing exercise when they're reading a book.
02:45Normally it's when you lift your brain up and go and do something else that the good ideas come.
02:50The exhibition runs until autumn 2027 and promises to shine a light on Liverpool's past or sparking ideas for the future.
