Two men have been arrested following a house fire allegedly started by fireworks, resulting
00:09
in an estimated 510,000 ringgit in damages.
00:14
Kulai OCPD Superintendent Tan Seng Lee reported that the fire occurred around 9.56pm on Thursday
00:21
after a 41-year-old woman alerted authorities through the Merse 999 emergency line.
00:28
Preliminary investigations indicate that the fire may have been an act of arson involving
00:34
fireworks, causing significant damage to the homeowner's property.
00:39
In response, the Kulai District Police's Criminal Investigation Department detained a 30-year-old
00:44
man and a 23-year-old foreign national.
00:48
Various types of fireworks were seized during their arrest.
00:52
Superintendent Tan added that the foreign suspect tested positive for THC, the active
00:57
compound in cannabis, in a preliminary urine test.
01:01
Both suspects are now under investigation for multiple offences, including arson under
01:07
Section 435 of the Penal Code, which carries a penalty of up to 14 years in prison and
01:14
a possible fine.
01:15
They also face charges under Section 8 of the Explosives Act for the illegal possession
01:21
of explosives, punishable by up to seven years in prison or a fine of 10,000 ringgit.
01:27
The Kulai Magistrate's Court has granted a six-day remand for the suspects from November
01:31
1 to November 6 to facilitate further investigation.
01:36
The Kulai District Police have urged the public to prioritise safety and avoid using unauthorised
01:42
fireworks, warning that strict action will be taken against violators.
