00:00Analysts say the leadership crisis within Bersatu at the national level has now spread

00:06to the grassroots levels.

00:07They are responding to calls for Malacca Bersatu Chief Dr. Yazil Yacoub to relinquish his post

00:13after the Jasin division he leads was suspended last week.

00:17Azmi Hassan of Academy Nusantara said the problem could be traced back to July when

00:22Bersatu President Muhyiddin Yassin revealed the formula for the party elections.

00:26Under this formula, Muhyiddin would remain as president, while the current Secretary-General

00:31Hamza Zaynuddin would take over the deputy's post from Ahmad Faizal Azumu.

00:36Azmi said that with this formula in place, Bersatu's grassroots were not given any

00:40chance to determine who they wanted to pick for the top posts.

00:44He said the emergence of three other contenders for the vice president's posts showed that

00:48Muhyiddin had lost some respect in terms of his leadership.

00:52Meanwhile, Shehzad Shukri of International Islamic University Malaysia said Bersatu was

00:57fraught with factionalism because its leaders had not been able to keep members in line.
