00:00But man, we haven't been able to stop talking about the CBS interview.
00:07Ta-Nehisi Coates is opening up about his much-talked-about CBS morning interview.
00:12Coates discussed the controversial interview in a trailer for the next episode of the What Now
00:16with Trevor Noah podcast, suggesting that host Tony DeCoppol, commandeering the interview,
00:21didn't serve his colleagues Gil King and Nate Burleson well.
00:25I don't think you understand the shockwave that interview created,
00:29not because of what you said, but because of the way people felt like you were treated.
00:33Noah zeroed in on one particular moment from DeCoppol during the CBS interview.
00:37Imagine if I took your name out of it, took away the awards and the acclaim,
00:42took the cover off the book, the publishing house goes away, the content of that section
00:46would not be out of place in the backpack of an extremist.
00:50Coates said,
00:51I love all of those awards and accolades, but they're not really me,
00:54so okay, you take them away, it's fine. You know what I mean? I'm still me.
00:58Coates added that he was prepared for the criticism he would face for the message.
01:02I knew this was coming, and I figured at some point it was going to be a fight.
01:06I didn't know it was going to be right then, but I figured at some point it was going to be a fight.
01:09Coates also indicated that King was thoroughly prepared,
01:12though ultimately didn't get to ask any questions.
01:15While on the one hand, he probably did me a service,
01:19you know what I mean, by just kind of commandeering that interview,
01:22I don't think he did Nate and Gayle a service, and I'm really, really sorry for them.
01:28The full Ta-Nehisi Coates episode of What Now with Trevor Noah drops on October 10.
