00:00It's official, these two can finally get married.

00:04The Thai King signed same-sex marriage into law on Tuesday, making Thailand the first

00:08country in South East Asia to recognise marriage equality.

00:12Queer couples will have to wait 120 days for the law to come into effect, but from January

00:17they will be able to walk down the aisle.

00:20And judging by this rainbow display from this year's Pride March, they are sure to be

00:24colourful events.

00:25The law also replaces terms such as men, women, husbands and wives with gender-neutral

00:30language and gives same-sex couples the same rights to adoption and inheritance as heterosexual

00:36ones.

00:37The country's former Prime Minister Sveta Tarasen, who was instrumental in the legislation,

00:42took to social media to celebrate the moment.

00:45Another important step for Thai society, the marriage equality law has been passed.

01:00But the victory did not come easily.

01:02For decades, LGBTQI activists have campaigned for equal rights in the Buddhist kingdom,

01:08where many still hold conservative values.

01:11Then earlier this year, love won out when the Senate voted through the legislation 130

01:16votes to 4.

01:18Thailand now joins the growing list of more than 30 countries who have opted for the more

01:22inclusive form of marriage, and is the third in Asia after Taiwan and Nepal.

01:28It is also widely recognised as one of Asia's most queer-friendly nations.
