00:00The gunfire has finally silenced.
00:03After weeks of armed combat that continued through Friday night,
00:06Thailand and Cambodia's defense ministers signed a ceasefire agreement Saturday.
00:10The agreement prevents further military provocation from either side,
00:14ending a conflict in which dozens of people were killed and over half a million were displaced.
00:20Today's ceasefire paved the way for enabling the displaced people
00:26who are living in the border areas to return to their homes and work in the fields.
00:38Saturday's agreement was signed after international pressure from China and the US
00:42to bring a halt to fighting, which broke out earlier this month.
00:46Both sides accused each other of instigating the violence and violating a previous ceasefire.
00:51However, Thai and Cambodian officials expressed a desire that this time
00:55the conflict will end for good.
00:59I hope this will be the final signing so that peace can be achieved in the area
01:04and people can return to their homes.
01:11The ceasefire will be monitored by a team of observers
01:14from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations
01:16and through direct coordination between Thailand and Cambodia.
01:20The agreement does not resolve the border dispute between the two countries
01:23over territory containing ancient temples claimed by both sides.
