Gangs are teaming up with other gangs, with a view to having one organised entity - so warns Pastor Clive Dottin and the Scrap Iron Dealers Association. At a press conference on the Brian Lara Promenade on Monday, the Association and other interest groups called for urgent intervention, before the criminals' goals become a reality. Rynessa Cutting has more.

00:00They've been visiting vulnerable communities, carrying out outreach initiatives and connecting
00:06with the people on the ground.
00:08Now they're reporting some news that they say is cause for grave concern.
00:13We see the criminal element, you know, getting together.
00:16And from what I have heard, there is an initiative in the underworld to pull all the gangs together
00:21under one gang leader.
00:23Now that is not going to be such an easy task, but it shows you that they have a plan.
00:29President of the Scrap Anguillers Association, Alan Ferguson, concurs he's sounding the
00:35alarm.
00:36They started to talk to one another, and if we allow this to happen, without going and
00:42stop them, I am telling you, we who get free, we will be able to even come in Poland sometimes.
00:48I am telling all of you, if Poland don't believe it, leave it alone.
00:53But if you feel that what I'm saying is true, let us help.
00:57The association will also visit Tobago in the coming weeks, as the island is seeing
01:02a recent upsurge in homicides.
01:05People giving people a piece of weed, people selling you weed and not paying them, and
01:08they're losing their life because a pound of weed, half pound of weed, two pound of
01:12weed.
01:13And all those know that.
01:14But I am telling you, this is part of the problem in Tobago.
01:17And that is why we say we're going to Tobago and we're going all over Trinidad to talk
01:22to people, to take, not to just go and talk to them, but to try to get them into works
01:29that they could able to work that they wouldn't be in a life of crime.
01:33Given the crime situation, the association is urging government to prioritize funding
01:38for organizations like itself, which it says aims to address crime at the source.
01:44And with the 2025 budget reading coming up on September 30th, Ferguson believes now is
01:51the opportune time.
02:21still help them.
02:22A lot of them now have family.
02:23A lot of them have wives, children, some of them build a house, some of them have vehicles
02:28because they're following the right path.
02:29And this is what we are about, to try to change.
