00:00And also, in Uruguay, the electoral campaigns are developing, with little more than a month
00:05remaining and the enthusiasm in the streets is low, according to the supporters and militants
00:10of the parties.
00:12Our correspondent, Mateo Grilla, gives us more information.
00:15In past elections, this square gathered dozens of supporters of the Uruguayan political parties,
00:24all with the same goal, to convince voters to back their candidacies with their votes.
00:28But this time, everything seems different because the public attends with certain apathy
00:32to an electoral campaign that still seems far away from the people.
00:41Very quiet.
00:42I find it more boring this time.
00:43We like politics and debates, and a little bit more of heat.
00:49I find it very calm and quiet.
00:52The discussions seem silly, they don't go to anything deep.
01:00Always within the same theme.
01:01I don't know.
01:06I find it extremely boring.
01:08I'm already waiting for the elections, to vote and get out of this because sometimes
01:13I'm embarrassed to watch TV and see the comments and proposals.
01:17A disaster.
01:25Although the different parties have intensified their campaigning activities, there is still
01:29no electoral climate.
01:31Many believe that citizens do not show interest, which is a huge problem.
01:39I think it used to be different, now with social media and all that, it seems to me
01:43that it has been changing little by little.
01:48People are not very interested either.
01:50I think we are not that interested in the political world and I think it is a huge problem.
01:57Because in the end, it is what is going to force our future.
02:00So I think we are lacking in that sense.
02:07Some candidates for the next legislative term argue that the lack of discussion of proposals
02:11is becoming evident and that this is an objective of the political right.
02:17We know that the campaign of the right is going to be like, the less political discussion,
02:21the better.
02:22The less program discussion, the better.
02:25Like you were saying, it's a campaign where you show muscles, where you show somebody
02:29surfing, somebody walking a dog.
02:31Well, we are talking about something else.
02:37For others, the lack of commitment is also the result of the dismantling of spaces for
02:41participation and ideological formation.
02:45Another element that reduces the levels of discussion, participation and activity of
02:49the people is the loss of ideology.
02:52Here there are shared responsibilities of many organizations that in government have
02:55dismantled themselves from the spheres of discussion.
02:59And this leads to the fact that any media discourse drags people along.
03:07Others mull this situation and argue that the emergence of social media determines a
03:11different type of electoral campaign.
03:16Social media leads to the weakening of certain types of campaign and the promotion of others.
03:21Does this mean that the style of politics in Uruguay has changed?
03:24No.
03:25It can change.
03:26But there must be both.
03:28Social networks are a tool.
03:30The tool can be used in one way or another.
03:33What happens here is that the parties are very strong.
03:41In spite of this situation, everyone agrees that over the next few weeks, the intensity
03:46of the campaign will influence the population, which will end up going to the polls on October
03:5027 to elect a president, a vice president and renew the entire Senate and Chamber of
03:55Deputies.
