The Gulf of Carpentaria is best known for its world-class fishing, but it also boasts one of the longest school bus runs in the country. With 120-kilometres to cover each way, these students encounter a whole lot more than just learning -- before they even enter the classroom.

00:05From Birktown to Bedungoo, the wheels on the bus go round and round.
00:10It's the longest school bus run in Queensland, with students making the return journey from
00:15their remote outback homes each day.
00:18Come to Birktown, they spend the day at school and then they head back in the afternoon.
00:22The trip takes about 90 minutes each way, and while the kids are tech savvy, it's not
00:26just about playing games.
00:28We do have iPads and technology for them on the bus to cement learning at school.
00:33So the activities are on the bus where they're doing the activities and the teachers can
00:36check the iPads when they come back to school the next day.
00:39Students will have travelled nearly 50,000 kilometres by the end of the school year,
00:44more than four times the distance of the average car registered in Queensland.
00:49But being on the road doesn't seem to bother these kids.
00:52I want to be a mechanic to learn about big cars.
00:56Cutting and drawing, cooking burgers, having fun.
01:04It's hard for school, because school is Birktown, it's far away.
01:12A roster of teachers and parents help keep the wheels turning.
01:16Have a bit of fun on the bus as well.
01:18We're looking at always engagement, getting the students to school to have a good day.
