00:0277 hectares of waterfront land, just moments from the CBD.
00:06In a housing crisis, Bays West is a golden opportunity, a project Sydney can't afford
00:12to get wrong.
00:12We want to be critical of what's happened in the past, but we should look at the way
00:16we've done things in the past and make sure that we get it right here.
00:19It's too important.
00:20It's just too important.
00:22Some things are already decided.
00:24There'll be up to 8,500 homes and 25% of the precinct will be public space, including
00:29a waterfront park.
00:30But from July, local and international designers will compete to shape the new suburb.
00:36The look and feel of the precinct, not exactly designing each individual building, but designing
00:40the streetscape, the public domain, the plaza.
00:43We need to make sure that this is a precinct that brings the whole community to life with
00:47entertainment options and hospitality, not just homes.
00:51A brand new suburb deserves a brand new name and the community will be asked to submit
00:56suggestions for what to call this much sought after Slice of Sydney.
01:01I like the idea of a public competition and we're not going to be stupid about it and name
01:06it.
01:07What was that thing a few years ago?
01:09That thing was Ferry McFerryface, the temporary name given to this vessel following another competition,
01:16although it later emerged that entry didn't even win.
01:19The name of Sydney's newest suburb won't be decided by a popular vote, but the government
01:24is looking for inspiration.
01:25I just think we can probably do better than Bays West.
01:27A new name that'll live on long after all this disappears.
