00:00We'll be right back with more
00:01details on this story.
00:06Their county commissioner
00:08Downey couch joins us again
00:10today, and certainly I think
00:12you can breathe a little sigh
00:13of relief as the worst
00:14conditions were off to the
00:16south. But let's get an update.
00:19Danny What's the latest and how
00:21bad did their county suffer
00:22from that persistent easterly
00:26wind yesterday? Well, you're
00:28right. Even though the wind
00:30has abated, it's still
00:32persistent onshore. And even
00:36though things are calming down
00:38a little bit, we're not out of
00:39the woods yet on the coastal
00:41erosion issues in regard to
00:42some of the houses that are
00:44teetering in the surf zone. So
00:46the next couple of title
00:47cycles, high tides were still
00:49in a king tide. We've got all
00:50hands on deck from law
00:52enforcement to human health and
00:54human services and emergency
00:55management and the National
00:57Park Service and the Department
00:59of Transportation. We're all
01:00sharing data. And Danny, I must
01:04say this must be a very
01:06exhausting process for you all
01:09along the Outer Banks, North
01:10Carolina. And I know the D. O.
01:12T. Was adding sand yesterday.
01:13But as I mentioned, this isn't
01:15just the summer problem in North
01:17Carolina. I mean, this is a
01:19persistent problem in the Outer
01:21Banks of North Carolina.
01:22Correct? Yes, sir. Uh,
01:27hurricane surf is problematic,
01:29but it's those northeasters. I
01:31mean, it's just energy upon
01:32energy is it's like having a
01:34washing machine on full cycle,
01:36right? So these kind of events
01:38are the ones that concern us.
01:40Hurricanes and tropical systems
01:42can pass. But when you've got
01:43three or four days of the ocean
01:45at a crescendo, that's causes
01:47all sorts of problems here.
01:48Nuisance flooding, you name it.
01:51Any update on the waterfront
01:54homes that are in danger? Uh,
01:57we are monitoring that. Yeah,
02:00we've actually got, uh, people
02:03on the ground over there. They
02:04made it through. It was we had
02:07we had overhead surf. It was
02:098 to 10 ft. And even though the
02:12winds have dropped off, we still
02:14have two more title cycles.
02:16This does not go away. And yes,
02:19we, uh, stay tuned on that. We
02:22don't know how long it will
02:24last. We don't know how long
02:26it will last. We shall see. But
02:28we've got a couple that are
02:29actually tilting. So we've got
02:33people there. When you have such
02:36a vulnerable area, and then you
02:38have just the normal weather
02:40any kind of easterly wind and
02:42then you pass in the hurricane
02:44you talk about, uh, then in the
02:45wintertime, the nor'easters, how
02:46does their county just stay
02:52We have very little turnover
02:53here in all departments, and we
02:56know what we're doing. We
02:57communicate directly with all
02:59our all our partners, all our
03:01stakeholders, and it's just a
03:02fact of life. It can be
03:04paradise here, or it can be
03:06your worst nightmare, especially
03:07if the road goes out. Uh, you
03:09just it's a challenge. It's a
03:11check. Yeah. Sounds living on
03:13the coast. Well, experience is
03:16key, sir. And it sounds like
03:17you and the other, uh, other
03:19people that are working with
03:21you have a very good idea of
03:22how to keep everybody safe, and
03:24we certainly thank you for
03:26everything that you do. Danny
03:27Couch, their community county
03:29commissioner again, sir. Thank
03:30you so much for taking the time
03:31to join us here in AccuWeather
03:33early. Absolutely excellent
03:37coverage by you guys.
