Qualifying for Round 15 of the 2008 F1 season at Singapore.
Transcript
00:00:00The Formula One season is nearing its conclusion, and compared to last year, the tale of 2008
00:00:06has produced the unexpected, with glory spread throughout the grid.
00:00:10The most recent proof comes from the last two races.
00:00:14The final laps at Spa were surreal and exciting.
00:00:17No one watching could believe what they saw, and similarly found it hard to believe that
00:00:22story wasn't over.
00:00:24The Italian Grand Prix saw rain clouds that few of the Tufosi had ever seen at Monza.
00:00:29Their senses played further tricks on them when the Ferrari power plant they heard leading
00:00:33was from Sebastian Vettel's ride, and the Scuderia they saw celebrating was that of
00:00:37Toro Rosso, setting a new high-water mark for the team during the weekend.
00:00:43This weekend marks a new destination, and if Formula One's initial trip to Singapore
00:00:47features a parade of the world's finest racing machines, like the inaugural Valencia Street
00:00:52Race, or gives us a passing spectacle like this year's Wet Monaco Grand Prix, we're
00:00:57still guaranteed to see what we've never seen before in the sport, racing under the
00:01:02lights.
00:01:03The visuals will be hard to believe, and the results could be unbelievable as well.
00:01:07We get another step closer to night racing, as qualifying for the Singapore Grand Prix
00:01:11starts now.
00:01:12Right as a video arcade, bumpy as a washboard in places, but you can't go wrong with a
00:01:41look at the scenery.
00:01:44Exotic Singapore is the newest stop on Formula One's worldwide itinerary.
00:01:49Welcome to the first-ever Grand Prix of Singapore qualifying.
00:01:53Hi, everybody, I'm Bob Varsha with David Hobbs, Steve Matchett, and Peter Windsor.
00:01:59I know we say it every week, but qualifying was probably never more important to a driver
00:02:03than here in Singapore.
00:02:05The track is very tight and twisty, and what is about to unfold will go a long way toward
00:02:11deciding the outcome of Sunday's race, the first ever under artificial light in Formula
00:02:16One history.
00:02:17There's the Singapore Flyer, the world's tallest Ferris wheel, just one of the many charms
00:02:22of this amazing city.
00:02:23The Formula One crowd is having a great time, but one of the big questions coming in was,
00:02:27how do you deal with racing under artificial light for the first time?
00:02:30Specifically, how well will the drivers be able to see?
00:02:33Peter Windsor picks up that story.
00:02:38As we go into the inaugural Singapore Grand Prix on this hot, tropical night, all eyes
00:02:42are on how this brilliant new downtown facility will look, not only through the television
00:02:47lens, not only from the grandstands and from those sumptuous paddock club suites, but also
00:02:52through the visors of the drivers.
00:02:54We have various intensities of filtration, and for this race, we decided to go in the
00:03:00more extreme direction, so we are able to filtrate the light a little bit more than
00:03:06usual, if needed, especially, you know, if they look up and see those bright lights in
00:03:12the sky, that may be very important that we are able to filter that.
00:03:16And on the other hand, we have a possibility to enhance the contrasts if the light level
00:03:22is a little bit too low.
00:03:24After Friday practice, this is how some of the drivers talked about the lighting and
00:03:26the visor choice.
00:03:30The visibility is perfect, so there's no issue.
00:03:34Of course, you can realise in the box, especially if you look a bit up, the lights are so strong
00:03:40that they show you that they are there, but once you are in the pit lane concentrating
00:03:46on driving, it's no issue.
00:03:47And the solution with the visors, would you wear tinted visors?
00:03:51I'm using the orange visor, I found it OK, so maybe tomorrow I will try a different visor,
00:03:57but the visor doesn't make me quicker.
00:04:02The lights are very good, so it's not a problem for the visibility.
00:04:06What sort of visor did you go for?
00:04:08Is it as if it's daytime?
00:04:09Yeah, I got a special one, orange, for when it's dark.
00:04:16What sort of tinted visor?
00:04:18I'm not telling you all my secrets, I drove a clear visor, I don't think there's much
00:04:23in it.
00:04:24What is the favoured colour visor from an R.I.P. perspective?
00:04:28Not one exactly, so they have chosen a lot of different colours, so we offered four different
00:04:34colours today, light, smoke, clear, yellow and the amber one, and I would say, divided
00:04:42by four, everybody used one of them.
00:04:44So it's not really a trend which I can see at the moment.
00:04:50And not a rose tinted visor to be found, interestingly, if you know anything about Singapore, you
00:04:54know it's a very conservative city.
00:04:56A few years ago, a young American created an international furor when he was sentenced
00:05:00to a public caning for spraying graffiti on a street sign.
00:05:04Well, this weekend, believe it or not, the Formula One drivers have had to have an official
00:05:09dispensation to rip the tear-offs from their visors and throw them on the racetrack.
00:05:13Littering is a $700 fine here.
00:05:16Now let's take a closer look at this brightly lit racetrack with our BMW track analysis
00:05:20and his lordship, David Hobbs.
00:05:22Well, it is a fascinating track.
00:05:23It's got a lot of turns.
00:05:24It's 3.1 and a half miles long, so it's quite long for a street circuit.
00:05:28But as you can see, it is pretty twisty.
00:05:3023 corners, including that last kink.
00:05:33Turn one, two and three complex is a little bit tricky.
00:05:36And of course, the pit exit comes out there, which some of the drivers have been complaining
00:05:38about, down to Public Boulevard, through Raffles Boulevard.
00:05:41Pretty straightforward there.
00:05:42A little bit bumpy, then hard braking to Nicole and then that's St. Andrew's Road.
00:05:46Then we come to the place of real contention.
00:05:48Right down the end there is Turn 10, which is a narrow chicane.
00:05:52And it is really narrow.
00:05:54And Hamilton and others have been complaining about you have to drive over the curve.
00:05:57They're too high.
00:05:58And obviously, the wall is very close.
00:06:01Over the Anderson Bridge, tight Turn 13 there, which also had a low curb lowered.
00:06:06A long Esplanade drive, then through Raffles Avenue.
00:06:09And then that last complex there, you go under the grandstand, under the grandstand,
00:06:12under the freeway, out again, and a quick blast through those last two corners.
00:06:16Average speed is about 108 miles an hour, as opposed to 100 at Monte Carlo.
00:06:22And of course, 120 at the new street circuit at Valencia.
00:06:25So it's not much quicker than Monte Carlo, although it looks like it should be.
00:06:30The best clip through the speed trap thus far has been the much maligned Renault's.
00:06:35Young Nelson Piquet hit the speed traps at 181 miles an hour.
00:06:40That's on the start-finish straightaway just before Turn 1.
00:06:43We'll take a break and return.
00:06:45It's time for Knockout Qualifying for the first Grand Prix of Singapore.
00:06:49Stay with us.
00:06:53Speeds coverage of the FIA Formula 1 World Championship is brought to you by Bridgestone.
00:06:58Passion for excellence.
00:07:03The new street circuit at Singapore has gone green for the opening round of qualifying.
00:07:08Q1, 20 minutes.
00:07:10As you see, no rain expected during qualifying.
00:07:12Pretty remarkable in that Singapore, like, say, the South Florida area, gets rain virtually
00:07:17every day.
00:07:18But we haven't seen any yet here in Singapore.
00:07:20Well, of course, it's been a miracle.
00:07:21And of course, the rain obviously not only makes the place slippery, but at night, it
00:07:26does make some incredible light refraction.
00:07:29So it would be very difficult here in the rain.
00:07:31There you see the head-to-head battles between teammates when it comes to qualifying.
00:07:35Felipe Massa out-qualifying his teammate, Kimi RÀikkönen, for Ferrari, 10 to 4 in
00:07:41the 14 races coming into this weekend.
00:07:43Not what everybody expected at all.
00:07:45Well, when you get to the Renault team, you'll see that, oh, we've already passed it, I guess,
00:07:51that Fernando Alonso is the only driver to have out-qualified his teammate, Nelson Piquet,
00:07:56at every round of the championship thus far this year.
00:07:59And looking pretty good for today, too, quickest in this morning, quickest in the earlier session
00:08:04held tonight.
00:08:05This is at 13.10.
00:08:06It's very, very narrow.
00:08:07I mean, you couldn't possibly just drive through it.
00:08:12Those curbs still look very high to me at turn 10.
00:08:16I thought they'd taken some of those high points off, but they still look very high.
00:08:21I mean, if you hit that with a chassis, you're very likely to crack the underside of the
00:08:25top.
00:08:26Beautifully lit track.
00:08:281,500 individual lamps powered by 12 big diesel generators housed in soundproof boxes around
00:08:34the circuit.
00:08:35Of course, all sorts of backup systems.
00:08:37One of the drivers' main concerns was, what happens if the power is suddenly cut?
00:08:41Great.
00:08:42Yeah, come on, Dad.
00:08:43Let's listen to the BMW boys.
00:08:44As well, if you touch the wall for any reasons, and you abort the run, it's good if you come
00:08:45on the radio and say which corner of the car is damaged, and we go straight to look for
00:08:46it.
00:08:47Tony, next time, don't say such a thing before qualifying.
00:08:48If I'm not mistaken, you're the only driver to have out-qualified his teammate, Nelson
00:08:49Piquet, at every round of the championship thus far this year.
00:08:50This is at 13.10.
00:08:51It's very, very narrow.
00:08:52I mean, you couldn't possibly just drive through it.
00:08:53Those curbs still look very high to me at turn 10.
00:08:54I thought they'd taken some of those high points off, but they still look very high.
00:08:55And these carbon-fibre suspensions are very good, providing they're loaded in the direction
00:09:19that they're made to work in, but you just tap one of the walls around here, and you
00:09:23can very easily crack one of the wishbones.
00:09:26That's the engineer's concern.
00:09:27The driver, of course, saying, what are you talking about?
00:09:30This is Adrian Sutil, the only driver in the series who has yet to make it out of Q1.
00:09:35What are we talking about?
00:09:36Well, if you're not familiar with Formula 1 knockout qualifying, in this 20-minute qualifying
00:09:41session, the five slowest cars at the end of the session will be knocked out, eliminated,
00:09:45and take positions 16 to 20 on the grid.
00:09:48Then we'll do Q2, a 15-minute session, eliminate five more cars, and move on to Q3, in which
00:09:54the ten surviving drivers will declare their race-level fuel loads at enough for as many
00:09:59laps as they want to do in their bid for pole.
00:10:02We'll go out and see who lines up where for Sunday's Grand Prix.
00:10:06Just a ten-minute pole session in Q3.
00:10:08As you were saying, Bob, about the lighting, they really have done a spectacular job.
00:10:14I mean, it looks like sunlight.
00:10:17I mean, you can see very little shadow around the car, a little bit.
00:10:20Most of the drivers yesterday, after the practice session, were saying, it's terrific, the lighting
00:10:24is fine, it's not a problem.
00:10:25A couple of drivers saying, well, actually, there are a couple of spots around the track
00:10:29where it could be better.
00:10:30But I think, all in all, it's an absolutely spectacular job, the lighting.
00:10:35Well, that's an amazing engineering job done by an Italian company, I believe, Valerio.
00:10:41And it's been absolutely amazing.
00:10:43And the crowds have been astonishing as well.
00:10:46I don't think it's a national holiday in Singapore, but organisers estimated 100,000 spectators
00:10:52were on hand for Friday, which was basically two 90-minute practice sessions.
00:10:56Let's get more on the atmosphere around Singapore with Peter Windsor.
00:10:59Peter?
00:11:01Yeah, it is just amazing here in the pit complex as well.
00:11:04Valerio Maioli, actually, the Italian who's behind the design of the lighting here.
00:11:08And it is just sensational.
00:11:10Fizzi Keller there, we see, having a look at the monitor.
00:11:13Now, he switched to a clear visor just before he crashed this morning.
00:11:16So, maybe, it's still a big subject of debate what colour visors to have.
00:11:20But Fernando Alonso has also got a clear visor.
00:11:22Both McLaren guys in orange and yellow.
00:11:24And Felipe Massa with a smoke visor.
00:11:26So, lots of different opinion there.
00:11:28But just fantastic to watch the cars down this straightaway in front of the pits here.
00:11:33The lights in the paddock club, the atmosphere, just brilliant.
00:11:36Kimi RÀikkönen recovering now from an incident this morning.
00:11:40We see him on camera now.
00:11:41It looked as if the car jumped out of gear as it bottomed out.
00:11:44And as a result, he couldn't get it back into gear when he went down the runoff area.
00:11:47And Ferrari obviously concerned about the gearbox on the RÀikkönen car.
00:11:51Kimi RÀikkönen still on the carbon industry brakes.
00:11:54Felipe Massa on the Brembo brakes.
00:11:56Kimi RÀikkönen was a good bit slower in the second session than he was in Friday morning's first practice.
00:12:01He said the team made an adjustment to the car that they had tested at Mugello in Italy last week.
00:12:08Specific to the front end.
00:12:09But it did not work and slowed him down.
00:12:10And they didn't have time to rectify it and get a more appropriate time for the world champion.
00:12:17Look at those long grandstands, packed with people.
00:12:20That problem that happened to Kimi RÀikkönen's car with the gearbox jumping out of gear
00:12:24is something that all the teams will be very concerned about.
00:12:26These super slick, seamless shift transmissions, as they're called,
00:12:31with very, very little shift time between the ratios, are sensitive to the car bottoming out.
00:12:36They have a little electronic sensor which tells the transmission software which gear has been selected.
00:12:43And the vibrations of going over a rough track just send that skew whiff
00:12:47and it forgets whether or not it's in 4th, 5th or 6th.
00:12:50Confuses the system.
00:12:52Skew whiff, is that a technical term?
00:12:53Yeah, it is.
00:12:56There you see at the upper left of your screen, only six drivers have turned in hot laps to this point.
00:13:02You notice Ferrari not running their traditional brake fairings on the front rims as we've seen before.
00:13:07Remember where they took those off the previous race?
00:13:10Valencia, they took them off, didn't they?
00:13:11Yeah, concerned about overheating of the brakes.
00:13:13And again, that's another thing they'll be concerned about here, of course.
00:13:17This is very tough on brakes here because average speed is relatively low.
00:13:21RÀikkönen can only manage 6th in this evening's earlier practice.
00:13:26Oh, RÀikkönen was way down there in 17th, so he is again, you know, been outqualified by his teammate.
00:13:34That's a horrible chicane, I believe.
00:13:36I'm a little surprised to see RÀikkönen out there on the Supersoft option tire right now in this first session.
00:13:41Supposedly, those Supersofts have been very, very tricky, a very narrow window for golden laps.
00:13:48Well, I wonder whether or not, Bob, taking up the point you were just telling us about the system that they tried,
00:13:53the settings that they tried at Mugello on the Ferrari to give more front-end grip, which didn't work out.
00:13:58If Ferrari's quick cure to that is to try and put the Supersofts on the car just to get a tiny bit more grip out of the compound of the rubber.
00:14:05It may well be that.
00:14:07While we're watching Kovalainen circulating the track, just keep your eye on the kerbs as he drives around.
00:14:12You'll notice they're all different.
00:14:14Some very flat.
00:14:15There's the big, there's the big nasty turn, yeah.
00:14:19Weaves under the bridge, those kerbs there were high, they've cut them down a bit.
00:14:23But, I mean, every single corner seems to have a different profile and style of kerbing.
00:14:35Lots of drivers on track now.
00:14:37Only five drivers in the pit lane.
00:14:39Twelve and a half minutes to go.
00:14:41They've just come in to the part where you go under the grandstand.
00:14:47Comes out.
00:14:49These last two corners are very quick.
00:14:51I'm sorry, here's the grandstand.
00:14:53There is the grandstand, yes.
00:14:54Thought I'd let you play with that.
00:14:55This is a thing.
00:15:00There's the section.
00:15:01Watch this last corner.
00:15:03Quick corner.
00:15:05Hold your breath.
00:15:09Sebastian Vettel, the Monza winner two weeks ago, going quickly behind Kovalainen.
00:15:13He goes right to P1.
00:15:15Once again, in this first knockout qualifying session, being P1 is not as important as not being in those bottom five in terms of lap time.
00:15:23That final corner was the corner that was so tricky for people yesterday.
00:15:27We saw a lot of cars losing grip and even touching the Armco around there, but Kovalainen's McLaren just handled it so well.
00:15:34Oh, man, that was close.
00:15:37Alonso, Fernando Alonso, was quickest in this morning's one-hour practice session with a 1.44.506.
00:15:44That's the quickest lap we've seen all week.
00:15:4645 flat, it's definitely not hanging about.
00:15:50It's like Lewis Hamilton will go to the top of the charts, leading Felipe Massa by just one point at the Drivers' World Championship.
00:15:57By a half-second plus, the McLaren Mercedes driver goes to the top of the charts over our Monza winner Vettel, Kovalainen, and Glock.
00:16:09Welcome back to the streets of Singapore.
00:16:11The first-ever Formula One weekend under the lights continues.
00:16:14This is qualifying. We have less than eight and a half minutes to go in Q1, the first knockout qualifying session.
00:16:20With David Hoff, Steve Matchett, and Peter Windsor, I'm Bob Varsha.
00:16:23There is the relegation zone in red on the left of your screen.
00:16:26Pultar, Bordet, Button, Sutil, and Fisichella.
00:16:32Watching Kaz Nakajima, a very solid fifth.
00:16:35The Japanese driver in the Williams Toyota appears to be in pretty good shape.
00:16:40His teammate went fourth, Nico Rosberg, on board with Rubens Barrichello, who had a miserable Friday here in Singapore,
00:16:47including a backwards impact with the trackside wall.
00:16:50And you can see he is just wrestling with that Honda.
00:16:53As he does so, let's go to Peter Windsor.
00:16:56Well, Bob, we see that Rubens Barrichello is on the harder of the two Bridgestones, the Prime tyre,
00:17:00but the fastest three have set their time on the super-soft Bridgestone.
00:17:03Big question marks, however, on what they will be using in Q3.
00:17:07The thinking going into P3 this morning was that maybe McLaren and Ferrari would run the soft tyre
00:17:12in the first two qualifying sessions, and then switch to the Prime for Q3.
00:17:16That's what the results from yesterday showed.
00:17:18But this morning... Sorry, this morning I'm doing it as well.
00:17:21But in the first session, P3, today, the super-soft did come into its own.
00:17:25The track's picked up grip, there's less graining, and the super-soft is a fast tyre now.
00:17:28So it'll be interesting to see if McLaren and Ferrari choose it for Q3.
00:17:32Lots of questions still to be answered here in qualifying.
00:17:36Jenson Button, Rubens Barrichello's teammate, after all the Friday activity, had a great comment.
00:17:40He said, I had a pretty decent day of practice tonight.
00:17:51But Carlo Fisichella, still the only driver who has yet to turn a lap.
00:17:54Fisichella had a big accident.
00:17:56Oh, well, he...
00:17:58Dove for the pit lane.
00:17:59I think he can board it, because that car... Yeah, exactly, you see his hands going there.
00:18:03That car pulled into pit lane.
00:18:04The pit lane entry here is very, very, very poor.
00:18:07There's no doubt about it.
00:18:08And the pit exit is also very poor.
00:18:11You... Have to have a look.
00:18:12If we get a look at Turn 1, you'll see that he just ejected right into the...
00:18:17Just before the apex.
00:18:18Watch this. Here he goes, see?
00:18:20That guy's going into pit lane and right, right under his nose.
00:18:23Yeah.
00:18:24So he just decides to abort.
00:18:27But there's nothing that Heidfeld... I think we think it was Heidfeld.
00:18:29There's nothing he could do about it.
00:18:30He's got to get down to that, uh... Yeah.
00:18:3330... 30-what-kilometer-an-hour pit lane speed limit.
00:18:36I just tell a straight that the steering wheel display on Barrichello's car, that...
00:18:40The display, to me, seemed to be cutting in and out.
00:18:43Now, it may well be that Honda are playing with something on the electronics anyway to help him.
00:18:48Fisichella there, by the way, Steve.
00:18:49They're just putting that panel back.
00:18:50I don't think Fisichella's been out yet.
00:18:52He had an accident this morning. He's not been out.
00:18:54No, he hasn't.
00:18:55He went flying over those curbs at the Turn 10 chicane this morning.
00:18:58Yeah. You look at that Turn 10, I...
00:19:01The problem with those narrow chicanes is only one car can go through.
00:19:05There's no question about it. Only one car can go through.
00:19:07And it spreads the field out horribly.
00:19:09Well, that's also the case with Turn 23 there at the pit entrance.
00:19:12And we just saw Rubens Barrichello trip over another car while on a hot lap.
00:19:17You notice the drivers in the relegation zone include world champion Kimi Raikkonen.
00:19:22Along with Coulthard, Bourdais, Sutil and Fisichella.
00:19:25And as we mentioned, Sebastian Bourdais, it's our sad duty to report,
00:19:30if you haven't already heard the news,
00:19:31that artist, racer and racing team owner, Paul Newman,
00:19:36passed away yesterday at the age of 83 due to cancer.
00:19:40Foxer with his wife and family.
00:19:42He was a great, great ambassador for our sport.
00:19:47That is a tragic loss.
00:19:49We'll do more on the speed report,
00:19:50certainly at speedtv.com as the weekend goes on.
00:19:55Thoughts are also with Carl Haas and the Newman-Haas-Leinigan team
00:20:01on the passing of Paul Newman.
00:20:07It's a bit like a video game, doesn't it?
00:20:09Absolutely. Yeah.
00:20:12See McLaren running these little additions to the nose,
00:20:16as Honda have got some very big little dumbo ears on the front of the nose.
00:20:20Anything to try and get more front-end grip around here.
00:20:24Because you've got to brake hard and turn in at the same time,
00:20:27and it's so easy along the front,
00:20:29so obviously you've got to get the brake balance right,
00:20:31but you do need a lot of downforce here on the front
00:20:34to be able to get the car turned in and pointed.
00:20:37Because you want to get rid of that understeer.
00:20:38You've got to get rid of the understeer when you're turning in
00:20:41to allow the car to be relatively balanced on the exit,
00:20:44so that you can get some good traction,
00:20:46because obviously traction here is vitally important
00:20:48as you come off these slower corners.
00:20:50Kovalainen goes to a 44.3 to top the speed charts.
00:20:53That's the quickest lap we've seen all weekend.
00:20:56Kimpstedt is starting a lap.
00:20:58He's got time for two more.
00:21:00He is in the knockout zone right now.
00:21:04Hooking the wheel on a curb like that is not going to help his efforts
00:21:07to hoist himself out of the relegation zone.
00:21:09I'll tell you, this Q1, Q2 and Q3, it's pretty heart-stopping stuff.
00:21:13We saw what happened to Hamilton two weeks ago in Monza,
00:21:17doing the wrong thing at the wrong time with the tyres and the rain.
00:21:20And I mean, it's very easy to make a bit of a cock-up
00:21:22and then there you are, you're out of it.
00:21:25Yeah, absolutely it is.
00:21:27But looking very strong there.
00:21:29Oh, that's it for P15.
00:21:31That's to the bubble.
00:21:32She needs to get it.
00:21:33There are the two hairpins on that overhead shot.
00:21:36The two hairpins, 8 and 14, are within about 50 feet of each other.
00:21:42That's that turn 10.
00:21:44But, oh, you see, if you get that entry wrong,
00:21:46it just throws you right into that wall on the exit.
00:21:49Over the Anderson Bridge, narrowest part of the circuit.
00:21:53Followed by a tight left-hander.
00:21:57Now a long blast down Esplanade Drive.
00:22:04Well, he should be well and truly in.
00:22:06Oh, Fisichella again.
00:22:09You see, you notice that flexible tyre.
00:22:11It's not a tyre barrier, it's basically a plastic highway obstacle.
00:22:14Yeah, so the front of the, you know, the wings off the car again.
00:22:17I was just about to say, we've just seen Fisichella
00:22:19has managed to get the car out on track,
00:22:21but not for long he hasn't.
00:22:23Right front tyre is down, brakes smoking.
00:22:26Must have been on a hot lap.
00:22:28That's what we're talking about, the understeer.
00:22:30The understeer, just pushed right off the road there.
00:22:34No front grip at all.
00:22:35Raikkonen goes to P1 with a 1.44.282.
00:22:39Boy, that is a massive time.
00:22:40Well, that's very tragic for Fisichella,
00:22:44but it really did highlight the problems of the cars
00:22:46that we've seen so far.
00:22:47Yeah.
00:22:48And, you know, it's just a matter of time
00:22:50before we get to the end of the race.
00:22:52Yeah.
00:22:53It's just a matter of time before we get to the end of the race.
00:22:56It really did highlight the problems of the cars
00:22:58we're having around here.
00:22:59As you watch Felipe Massa,
00:23:00the only two cars in the garage right now
00:23:02are the McLarens of Kovalainen and Hamilton,
00:23:04P2 and P3.
00:23:06All of the other 18 drivers are on track.
00:23:10Massa goes to 4th.
00:23:13But with Fisichella out there wobbling around,
00:23:16that could compromise some drivers' last attempt
00:23:19to get out of the relegation zone.
00:23:21Specifically, Barrichello, Coulthard, Bordet, Sutil,
00:23:24and Fisichella himself, who appears to be done.
00:23:28Well, of course, the one that's really going to be hurt
00:23:30is Bordet down there in 18th spot,
00:23:32where his teammate Sebastian Vettel,
00:23:34who had the pole in the wind two weeks ago,
00:23:36is up in 7th.
00:23:37That young lady was David Coulthard's girlfriend,
00:23:40Karen, who's pregnant with their first child.
00:23:44And there is the man himself, David Coulthard,
00:23:46in his one and only Singapore appearance as a driver.
00:23:49He'll be retiring from Red Bull at the end of the year.
00:23:53He's on the white stripe, super soft.
00:23:55Bridgestone using a fluorescent white paint
00:23:58to mark the option tires this weekend.
00:24:06Both are trying to avoid being knocked out in Q1
00:24:09for the fourth time this year.
00:24:14Bit slide there.
00:24:15David Coulthard, of course.
00:24:16This is race number 243 for him.
00:24:19Six behind Michael Schumacher in the all-time standings.
00:24:28He's going to be...
00:24:30He's not going to get around for another lap,
00:24:32as you see, only nine seconds left,
00:24:33so he's not going to get around,
00:24:34and he's obviously off-base here,
00:24:35so David Coulthard, I don't think,
00:24:37is going to make it out of Q1.
00:24:40Sebastian Bordet, what's he up to?
00:24:45Kubica and Raikkonen both hit the pit lane.
00:24:48They are done.
00:24:49No time left.
00:24:51Checkers are out.
00:24:52Session is over.
00:24:53Hot laps will still count if they're underway right now.
00:24:59Oh, he goes to 15th by 9 thousandths of a second,
00:25:02bumping Piquet.
00:25:04But Piquet is still out there.
00:25:05And Bordet, can he get in?
00:25:08No, Sebastian is out.
00:25:11Talk about tinted visors.
00:25:13Bordet, the only driver to wear glasses when he drives,
00:25:15has tinted lenses for the weekend.
00:25:18Timo Black improves for Toyota.
00:25:20He's already had one big accident this weekend.
00:25:25Not too slowly now, Timo.
00:25:28On board with Bordet.
00:25:30Do you have a problem?
00:25:32Ooh, big slide.
00:25:38I'm sure Bordet is saddened by the news about Paul Newman,
00:25:41his former car owner.
00:25:43Piquet does not advance.
00:25:46Well, yet again, Alonso has beaten him,
00:25:48so we're up to race, what, 17 now?
00:25:50That's it.
00:25:53Well, it appears that that is it.
00:25:55Everybody who had a hot lap underway is now in or out,
00:25:58as the case may be.
00:26:02Checking Nico Rosberg.
00:26:04Replay to Williams as he gets to the wall.
00:26:08Doesn't look like it.
00:26:09If he did, it was only likely.
00:26:11Oh, dear.
00:26:12Is that him getting back up?
00:26:14Is that him getting back underway?
00:26:17Bit of a mess there.
00:26:18We'll be back.
00:26:20Back to Singapore.
00:26:22Sebastian Bordet has pushed back into the Toro Rosso garage.
00:26:26Let's check the results of Q1.
00:26:29Well, Kimi Raikkonen's setting an absolute blinding.
00:26:31The fastest lap of the week so far, then, at 144.2.
00:26:34Then, Heike Kovalainen and Lewis Hamilton
00:26:36in the Tour de France, Felipe Massa in the next Ferrari.
00:26:39Robert Kubica keeping up sterling work.
00:26:41Fernando Alonso doing a good job in spite of a spin.
00:26:43Sebastian Vettel also hanging right in there in seventh.
00:26:46Paul Sitter two weeks ago in Italy.
00:26:48And Nico Rosberg in the first,
00:26:50and Williams and Kaz Nakajima right behind him in the second one.
00:26:53And Timo Glock and Mark Webber there for Red Bull.
00:26:55All these guys struggling with that front-end grip,
00:26:57trying to get as much understeer dialed out as possible.
00:27:01Right down there for 15, David Coulthard.
00:27:04For Red Bull, these guys, however, they go no further.
00:27:07Nelson Piquet we saw there in the Renault.
00:27:09Sebastian Bordet complaining that the car was pulling to the left
00:27:12and maybe something broke around the car.
00:27:14Rubens Barrichello not happy.
00:27:16Giancarlo Fisichella, well, he just managed to get in a flying lap
00:27:19during that session.
00:27:22Not a good day for the Italian.
00:27:25Ah, the charms of Singapore.
00:27:27That's the first time that Bordet has been eliminated
00:27:30since Canada eight races ago.
00:27:33Very good shame, great shame here,
00:27:35especially this street circuit artist.
00:27:38Q1 is down. We'll knock off five minutes.
00:27:41Q2 in a moment.
00:27:46Welcome back. The track is now green on the streets of Singapore.
00:27:49Ready for Q2.
00:27:5115 minutes to knock out the five slowest drivers
00:27:54and identify the ten hitters who will move on to Q3
00:27:57in the bid for pole.
00:27:59I hope he's enjoying himself.
00:28:01Glad to see that youngster's wearing hearing protection.
00:28:03You need it at any racetrack, but certainly
00:28:05when you're around Formula 1 cars on a street circuit.
00:28:08It's a pity about Sebastien Bordet.
00:28:10The first time he's been eliminated Q1 since Canada.
00:28:13And really, he just loves those street circuits.
00:28:15He's so used to them in champ car racing.
00:28:18Big disappointment he's not got to the Q2.
00:28:21Barrichello eliminated Q1 for the eighth consecutive race.
00:28:24So, Rubens Barrichello.
00:28:26But going into Q2 for the first time since Hungary.
00:28:30So, one of the Hondas is doing all right.
00:28:32I was looking at that absolutely astonishing girl.
00:28:35I knew who the guy on the left was, Peter Steiner,
00:28:37but I do not know who she was.
00:28:39And it's driving me crazy.
00:28:41Ah, well.
00:28:44No one on track right now, though it is green.
00:28:47So, let's take this moment to remind you
00:28:49that tomorrow morning, David, Steve, Peter,
00:28:52and I will all be here for live coverage
00:28:55of the Grand Prix of Singapore.
00:28:57Now, some of us will be somewhere else,
00:28:59but we kick things off at 7.30 a.m. Eastern time
00:29:01with the Acura Pre-Race Show.
00:29:02At 8 o'clock, the cars will roll off.
00:29:04It'll be neat, trick and groovy.
00:29:05Don't miss it.
00:29:067.30 a.m. Eastern, live here on Speed.
00:29:11My, oh, boy, just look at that skyline.
00:29:13It's absolutely unbelievable here.
00:29:15All these buildings are all lit up just like a racetrack.
00:29:18Some parts of the world are in economic crisis,
00:29:20but they don't appear to be in Singapore,
00:29:22where over $200 million has been committed
00:29:25to Formula 1 over the next five years.
00:29:28We'll be back.
00:29:32Back in Singapore, 12.5 minutes remaining in Q2,
00:29:35the second qualifying session to set the grid
00:29:38for Sunday's first-ever race under artificial light,
00:29:41as well as the first-ever race here in Singapore.
00:29:44With David Hobbs, Steve Matchett, and Peter Windsor,
00:29:46I'm Bob Harsha.
00:29:47There is Heikki Kovalainen,
00:29:50one of several first-time winners in the sport this year.
00:29:54Only he and Felipe Massa for Ferrari
00:29:56have made it into the Q3, the third qualifying session,
00:30:00the run for pole at every race this season.
00:30:03Hard to believe that with the likes of Kimi Raikkonen
00:30:06and Lewis Hamilton out there as well,
00:30:08only Massa and Kovalainen have made it to Q3.
00:30:13There's Luca Badoir in the ball cap,
00:30:17always on hand in the Ferrari garage.
00:30:19He does a lot of the testing and setup on these race cars.
00:30:26There was a rumor going around that Michael Schumacher
00:30:28was going to get back into a car
00:30:30to do some testing for Ferrari,
00:30:32apparently that was ill-founded.
00:30:36So Heikki Kovalainen,
00:30:37another point about his circuit, of course,
00:30:39is it's one of the few left-handed circuits.
00:30:43Most circuits go clockwise,
00:30:44this one, of course, is anti-clockwise,
00:30:46as is Brazil.
00:30:49A lot of traffic up there on the highway.
00:30:53Not down here.
00:30:55So rather than left-hand turns here,
00:30:57it's tough on the old neck,
00:30:58because they're used to going right.
00:31:01Kovalainen came into a lot of criticism
00:31:03after the Italian Grand Prix,
00:31:04where he started on the front row
00:31:06alongside Sebastian Vettel,
00:31:08and given how fast Lewis Hamilton was in that race,
00:31:10although Hamilton, ooh, Alonso is off.
00:31:13He had a spin in Q1,
00:31:15and now it looks like he's just lost the fire.
00:31:18Oh, he's out, he's out.
00:31:20Ow.
00:31:23And he's not happy.
00:31:26I wonder what he said then.
00:31:28Exactly.
00:31:30You didn't need to hear that, did you?
00:31:33Oh, he is frustrated.
00:31:34And rightly so.
00:31:37Well, I think if we see a replay,
00:31:38you'll find out that it was that old front-end grip
00:31:41going away again.
00:31:43There's your replay, David.
00:31:44Listen in.
00:31:47The car stops, mate.
00:31:48Oh.
00:31:49The car stops.
00:31:52Ooh, the engine just shut off.
00:31:54Yeah.
00:31:56Oh, wow, no wonder he said it checked off.
00:31:58There it was again.
00:32:00Remember we were highlighting that on Barrichello's car,
00:32:02that the display seemed to be coming in and out,
00:32:04and as Alonso said there, the car has stopped.
00:32:06I wonder whether or not this again has something to do
00:32:08with the bumpy nature of the track,
00:32:10that it's just playing problems with the common ECU.
00:32:14Man, it may even be that.
00:32:16All the cars this year having to run this standard ECU,
00:32:19as it's called, made by McLaren Electronics Limited.
00:32:23But it may well be.
00:32:25I mean, the Formula 1 cars just do not like
00:32:29those sorts of vibrations going through the car.
00:32:32Now, these cars do have electronics that will shut off
00:32:34the engine to protect it.
00:32:36Our old Seb Battlegeek.
00:32:39Shows no fear, that lad.
00:32:42Alonso's engine was on its second race weekend.
00:32:4544.2.
00:32:48Gently, lad.
00:32:50Is that the quickest lap of the weekend?
00:32:52We saw a 44.2 in the first session.
00:32:54Yeah, right, and it did a 44.28.
00:32:56And that was a 44.26.
00:32:58So it is bad.
00:33:00Here comes Raikkonen again.
00:33:0344.232.
00:33:06But Sebastian Vettel on the game with that Toro Rosso,
00:33:09the Red Bull chassis and the Ferrari engine.
00:33:13After his victory at Monza two weeks ago,
00:33:15Vettel's old high school in Heppenheim, Germany,
00:33:17where he came from, renamed the school temporarily
00:33:20Sebastian Vettel Gymnasium.
00:33:23He's done a 44 flat.
00:33:25Yeah, fastest in sector one.
00:33:26Now, this Q2 is where you normally see the fastest laps
00:33:28of the qualifying period before they have to put the race
00:33:30shield in for Q3, but nevertheless,
00:33:32those are pretty awesome times.
00:33:34He was fastest in sector one and in sector three
00:33:36by some margin as well.
00:33:38Didn't quite have it in the middle section.
00:33:40Oh, man, Lewis.
00:33:42Slipping up there, going to turn one.
00:33:44The chicane master.
00:33:47Ooh, attaboy, Seb.
00:33:51Right out there by the wall.
00:33:53You can see that paint glistening in the light there.
00:33:55It's not exactly a high-grip area.
00:34:01Oh, it is qualifying, after all.
00:34:04Mark Webber up to a 45.2.
00:34:06He had a big crash that took him out of Friday morning's
00:34:08first practice.
00:34:09Maybe Coulthard right there as well.
00:34:11But once again, it's not about being B1.
00:34:14It's about being out of the slow five.
00:34:16Right now, that is Kovalainen, Hamilton,
00:34:18Heidfeld, Kubica, and Alonso.
00:34:20And Alonso, we know, he's definitely going to be out.
00:34:23So he will start 15th.
00:34:26Ooh, a brave boy putting on the blindfold.
00:34:29Well, the primes seem to be working better yesterday.
00:34:34I wonder if Kovalainen has got...
00:34:36Well, he hasn't got his lap in yet, so...
00:34:38I see a lot of smoke coming out of the break-ups there.
00:34:41We're talking how important the brakes are.
00:34:43You notice on the prime tyres,
00:34:45they've taken the super soft tyres off,
00:34:47put the prime tyres on.
00:34:49Remember, we saw both Ferraris,
00:34:51Raikkonen and Massa, making best use of the prime tyre.
00:34:55They're slightly harder.
00:34:57They're using that soft and super soft and...
00:35:00Well, it seems at the moment
00:35:02that those prime tyres are the way to go.
00:35:04I'm sure that was a decision made by McLaren there
00:35:06to change onto Hamilton's car.
00:35:08Options here for Robert Kubica.
00:35:10Both BMWs are also in the red zone right now.
00:35:14We're only a little under halfway through the session.
00:35:18So a slightly shorter session, of course.
00:35:20Yes, and you don't want to come upon
00:35:22a Fisichello or Alonso situation
00:35:24where somebody's car breaks and all of a sudden
00:35:26you get a local yellow flag.
00:35:28At the moment, yeah, exactly.
00:35:29That knockout zone's got some pretty heavy hitters,
00:35:31Kovalainen, Heidfeld, Kubica and Hamilton.
00:35:33And it's a long lap too,
00:35:35so you're not going to get that many of them.
00:35:37No.
00:35:39Kubica has been, once again,
00:35:42yapping in public
00:35:44about the lack of progress from his team.
00:35:47It's very unlike the quiet
00:35:49head-down-and-get-on-with-it guy
00:35:51that we knew early in the season.
00:35:53It got to the point where his team leader,
00:35:55Mario Tyson, had come out and said,
00:35:57Look, we sat down, we talked it through, we're fine.
00:35:59But just the fact that he felt compelled
00:36:01to make that statement...
00:36:03You wonder about whether or not
00:36:05the pressure of a championship fight
00:36:07might be getting under the skin
00:36:09of Nicola Strymer a little bit.
00:36:11Well, you know, he had that win,
00:36:13he knows he can do it,
00:36:14and he just wants the team to respond
00:36:16the same as he is.
00:36:18And, you know, it gets very frustrating sometimes.
00:36:20But what would possibly make him think
00:36:22the team wasn't trying as hard as he did?
00:36:27And this just after he signed up for next year.
00:36:30He jumps the P4, though.
00:36:33Behind Vettel, the three Ferrari engine cars
00:36:36are Masa Raikkonen and Vettel.
00:36:42Jenson Button, just bumped.
00:36:44He's now down 11th,
00:36:46along with Krulik Kovalainen and Hamilton.
00:36:48Nick Heidfeld comes in behind his teammate Kubica.
00:36:50Niko Rosberg still doing a good job.
00:36:52Hamilton is still in the pits.
00:36:54Yeah.
00:36:55At 14th place.
00:36:57Coming up on five minutes to go.
00:36:59Kovalainen's doing all the work.
00:37:01I assume Hamilton's waiting for this track to improve.
00:37:03They must be waiting to see how Kovalainen
00:37:05gets on his prime time.
00:37:07Must be, yeah.
00:37:09Because they got a bit...
00:37:11They haven't got a long time left.
00:37:13No, they don't.
00:37:15Takes a minute and three quarters
00:37:17to get around here.
00:37:19And that's if you're hoping it.
00:37:22Green to the bump.
00:37:24Kovalainen looks like he'll hoist himself up
00:37:26out of the relegation zone with this lap.
00:37:28That's not what he's looking for.
00:37:30No, it's not.
00:37:32He's looking to get to Q3,
00:37:34but, ooh, trapping in front.
00:37:40Meanwhile, Hamilton still shown in the pits.
00:37:45Maas and Raikkonen,
00:37:47one-two in the Ferrari, then Vettel.
00:37:49Kubica and Heidfeld,
00:37:51so the BMW Saubers are now safe.
00:37:53Rosberg, Mark Webber, David Kuhlpard,
00:37:55and Kaz Nakajima and the other Williams
00:37:57are the top nine.
00:37:59Timo Block 10, his teammate Jarno Trulli
00:38:01is 12th behind Jensen Button.
00:38:04Of course, Alonso will not be seen again.
00:38:06Boy, this is going to be a very good time.
00:38:08He was quicker than Maas in Sector 2,
00:38:10so this could put him at the top of the time sheet.
00:38:12So I expect we'll see Hamilton
00:38:14bolting on the primes.
00:38:16Hamilton's out on track now.
00:38:18He's made the decision.
00:38:20That is a very tricky corner,
00:38:22that going under the grandstand
00:38:24and coming out again.
00:38:26One advantage for Hamilton is
00:38:28he will be one of only four cars on track.
00:38:33It's a great corner.
00:38:35How's he doing?
00:38:37By 1.2 to 10th place.
00:38:39That's an exclamation point.
00:38:43That bumps Timo Block,
00:38:45so both of the Toyotas are out of the top ten.
00:38:49OK, Lewis, you have time and fuel
00:38:51for two laps, two laps.
00:38:53The fastest at the minute is Masa,
00:38:55144.0.
00:38:59Yes, let's not forget that,
00:39:01that's the voice of Steve Hallam, right?
00:39:03Or is that Martin Woodmarsh?
00:39:05I think that's Steve Hallam's voice.
00:39:07Looking at the car, guys,
00:39:09look, they've gone back to the super soft tyres.
00:39:11Steve Hallam's voice
00:39:13will be heard on NASCAR radios
00:39:15beginning next year as he becomes
00:39:17Director of Engineering, I believe is his title,
00:39:19with Michael Waltrip Racing next year.
00:39:21Amazing move.
00:39:23I'm still scratching my head over that one.
00:39:25Spent a lot of time with Steve Hallam last weekend
00:39:27and good with him.
00:39:29Home counties and stuff.
00:39:31Let's see how he's going to fit in at all.
00:39:33Good luck to him.
00:39:35Must be paying him a lot of dough.
00:39:37Look forward to seeing him over there.
00:39:39There he goes, off setting up on his...
00:39:41Has he got time for...
00:39:43He hasn't got time to do that.
00:39:45He can start a second lap, yeah.
00:39:49Assuming he doesn't stuff it on this one.
00:40:00Interesting decision by the team
00:40:02to put Hamilton back onto the super soft tyres.
00:40:04Either Kovalainen got on the radio
00:40:06and said, you know what,
00:40:08I think I will put Hamilton onto the super softs.
00:40:10I'm losing a little bit of grip.
00:40:12Kovalainen put in a good time.
00:40:14Or it could be that McLaren and Hamilton
00:40:16want to save the primes,
00:40:18the hard tyres, for Q3.
00:40:20There are those two hairpins joined together.
00:40:22Hamilton off the pace on sector one.
00:40:3028.3 compared to Kovalainen,
00:40:32to a massive 27.9.
00:40:34Another problem the teams are having
00:40:36by bouncing over those kerbs is
00:40:38some of them are damaging the barge boards.
00:40:40Those aerodynamic devices behind the front wheels
00:40:42will block up there off the bridge.
00:40:45That's a nice little kink on that bridge, isn't it?
00:40:47Very subtle, but very unpleasant.
00:40:49It's only about 30 feet wide.
00:40:55Two tenths off of P1,
00:40:57so he should be comfortably into the top ten.
00:41:02He'll be behind his teammate as things stand,
00:41:04but comfortably in the top ten
00:41:06to move on to Q3.
00:41:11Oh dear, Hamilton coming in
00:41:13off that embarrassment.
00:41:15No weather lets him by.
00:41:17That embarrassment two weeks ago at Monza
00:41:19where he picked the wrong tyre and worsening conditions
00:41:21and failed to advance out of Q2
00:41:23for the first time in his brief Formula 1 career.
00:41:27Now, how's he gonna do?
00:41:29Only eight!
00:41:31Wow!
00:41:32Well, he's got another lap's worth of fuel on board,
00:41:35so he's got like three kilos, six pounds of extra fuel on board.
00:41:38Those super soft tyres go off very quickly.
00:41:40I think they do.
00:41:42That didn't help him.
00:41:44The top four, Massa, Kovalainen, Raikkonen and Vettel
00:41:46are all in the garage.
00:41:49Everybody else is on track, except Alonso.
00:41:54Come on, girls, this is important.
00:41:58Come on!
00:42:00Tell you what, guys, now, these closing seconds,
00:42:03there's a lot of personal best times being set
00:42:05through sector one, 28.2, 28.2, 28.3,
00:42:08from Webber, Coulthard, Nakajima,
00:42:11all of those fellows are running fast now.
00:42:13Hamilton's not necessarily safe up there in eight.
00:42:16He is definitely not safe.
00:42:18Truly into the top ten, bumping David Coulthard,
00:42:21Mark Webber, and the other Red Bull is now on the bubble.
00:42:24Here's Timo Glock.
00:42:28Both of the Toyota drivers have been wrestling
00:42:30with this racetrack.
00:42:32Glock to fifth, bumping the other Red Bull of Mark Webber.
00:42:36Jarno Trulli, his teammate, is now on the bubble.
00:42:39Hamilton is ninth.
00:42:43Hamilton's got one lap left, he's out on the track,
00:42:45but he could get bumped down to tenth right here.
00:42:48Now, you wouldn't think Jenson Button and Honda
00:42:50would be a threat, but Button has been quick.
00:42:52He was in the top ten in this morning's final practice.
00:42:56No, he just misses an 11.
00:42:59Coulthard and Nakajima's times are fast.
00:43:02Hamilton is not safe.
00:43:04Nakajima ninth, Hamilton is on the bubble.
00:43:06Yeah, he is, yeah.
00:43:09And Hamilton is off the pace, he's let up.
00:43:12David Coulthard bids.
00:43:15Nope.
00:43:18Here comes Webber.
00:43:20You saw Hamilton's numbers up there,
00:43:22but it's clear Hamilton's...
00:43:23He's in, but by a hair.
00:43:25Oh, boy.
00:43:26And he was lucky there.
00:43:28Wow, well, if that was down to tire choice,
00:43:30they really did cut it fine.
00:43:32A tenth of a second is all that separated Lewis Hamilton
00:43:35from being knocked out in Q2 for the second straight race.
00:43:42Looks like McLaren Mercedes may not be entirely
00:43:44on top of the situation here in Singapore,
00:43:47but the potential is there with his teammate
00:43:49being up in second with a 44.2 to Hamilton's 44.9.
00:43:55A half-second difference between the two McLaren teammates,
00:43:58but not the one we're used to seeing.
00:44:00Yeah, but Hamilton...
00:44:03OK, Lewis, you just made it through P10.
00:44:05Thank goodness.
00:44:08Oh, so it's not all about hard work
00:44:10and sweat equity and all that jazz.
00:44:12Sometimes a little luck helps as well.
00:44:17David Coulthard is done.
00:44:19After a good effort, 10 remain,
00:44:21and we'll be back to see who starts for pole
00:44:24at the Grand Prix of Singapore.
00:44:26Stay with us.
00:44:31Speed's coverage of the FIA Formula One World Championship
00:44:34is brought to you by your neighbourhood Ace Hardware store,
00:44:37Ace, the helpful place,
00:44:39and by Mazda.
00:44:40On any given weekend,
00:44:41there are more Mazdas road-raced than any other brand.
00:44:47Welcome back to Singapore.
00:44:49The ticket prices that went from about $150 to $1,200
00:44:54for a grandstand seat.
00:44:56The organisers here have done well.
00:44:58I'd say so, pretty full.
00:45:00Absolutely, 100,000 yesterday,
00:45:02probably at least that many today or tonight.
00:45:05Here are the results of Q2.
00:45:07Well, Felipe Massa was fastest in qualifying
00:45:09for the seventh time this year in the last 13 races.
00:45:12Kovalainen and Edmund Tharen,
00:45:14Kimi RÀikkönen in the second prior,
00:45:15looking a lot better than he has of late.
00:45:17Vettel again, doing an outstanding job for Tauras.
00:45:19So, Mika Rosberg doing a great job.
00:45:21Robert Kubica and Kaz Dacuzima
00:45:23also went into it,
00:45:24and Lewis Hamilton down there,
00:45:25just getting into Q3.
00:45:28By the skin of his teeth,
00:45:29but these fellas, unfortunately,
00:45:31they go no further.
00:45:32Their grid times are now set,
00:45:34and their positions, Jarno Trulli,
00:45:35Jensen Button there for Honda,
00:45:37Mark Webber, David Coulthard,
00:45:38Fernando Alonso,
00:45:39we saw having problems there down in 15th.
00:45:41These fellas knocked out after Q1.
00:45:43Nelson Piquet, Sebastian Bordet,
00:45:45Rubens Barrichello in the other Honda,
00:45:47Sutil, and then Giancarlo Fisichella
00:45:49having all sorts of problems.
00:45:51Steve Batch's newest catchphrase,
00:45:53you go no farther.
00:45:55Soon to be as famous as...
00:45:57Thank you, sir. May I have another?
00:45:58Well, poor old Fisichella,
00:45:59that didn't even complete one flying lap in the qualifying.
00:46:02I don't think he's had one all day.
00:46:03He crashed on his first one this morning as well.
00:46:06No Red Bull Renault in Q3
00:46:08for only the second time in the last 12 races.
00:46:10But either way, they're not there.
00:46:13Back in Singapore,
00:46:15Sebastian Vettel pulls to the end of the pit lane
00:46:17as the track goes green.
00:46:19Another five minutes gone.
00:46:20It'll just be a ten-minute session
00:46:22on race fuel plus qualifying fuel
00:46:25for the ten survivors of knockout qualifying
00:46:27for Sunday's Singapore Formula One Grand Prix.
00:46:31We're underway.
00:46:32The David Hofstede matchup,
00:46:34Peter Windsor on Bob Barsha.
00:46:35Vettel absolutely brimming with confidence.
00:46:38None of the other Red Bull chassis
00:46:40are into Q3,
00:46:42but somehow the M-German makes it happen.
00:46:45Here's Nelson Piquet,
00:46:46who's had a pretty dispiriting day.
00:46:48A full one second off of his teammate,
00:46:51Fernando Alonso's time in Q1.
00:46:54Alonso himself had the car let him down in Q2.
00:46:57So not a good day for Renault thus far.
00:47:04Tomorrow, Dave Despain will answer your calls
00:47:06and emails about the state of affairs
00:47:08in the world of motorsports on Wind Tunnel.
00:47:10This week, Dave's featured guest will be
00:47:12motorcycle star turned stock car racer,
00:47:14Ricky Carmichael.
00:47:15So tune in to Wind Tunnel with Dave Despain
00:47:18live tomorrow night, 9 Eastern, 6 Pacific,
00:47:21only, of course, on Speed.
00:47:25Fernando Alonso there looking a bit down hard.
00:47:27His engine just stopped.
00:47:29And he knew it.
00:47:30Yeah, it just failed.
00:47:31Before it happened, he said the car's shutting down.
00:47:33Hamilton's going out again on the Supercell.
00:47:36I think it was Kovalainen, David.
00:47:38I don't know whether or not they're just
00:47:39trying to save those, the super soft,
00:47:42excuse me, the harder tyres for later on in the session.
00:47:45Kovalainen may have a set of those softer tyres
00:47:48just to burn a little bit of fuel off
00:47:50in this first couple of minutes of this last session.
00:47:53The team's typically set up for two runs
00:47:55during pole qualifying.
00:47:57And as you guys were saying earlier on,
00:47:59it's a relatively long lap around here.
00:48:01So you've got to get on with the program.
00:48:03There's that cut under the grandstand.
00:48:06It's a very long lap for a city street.
00:48:09145, yeah, three-mile street circuit.
00:48:13Here comes Vettel.
00:48:15Right along with him.
00:48:17But not for long.
00:48:21I mentioned that Sebastian Vettel's German high school
00:48:24renamed itself temporarily Sebastian Vettel High School.
00:48:27And one of the headmasters said,
00:48:29well, we're very proud of him.
00:48:31We're very proud of him,
00:48:33even if we have nothing to do with the fact
00:48:35that he's a Formula One driver.
00:48:37It's only about two years ago he was there.
00:48:39That's right.
00:48:40Don't forget, when he went to...
00:48:4221 years old.
00:48:43How old was he when he got his first point?
00:48:4519.
00:48:4619 when he scored his first World Championship point.
00:48:48Think about it this way.
00:48:49He's 21.
00:48:50He could win the World Championship this year,
00:48:52next year, and or the year after that,
00:48:54and still reset the record
00:48:56as youngest ever Formula One World Champion,
00:48:58a remark held by Fernando Alonso.
00:49:02Bob, I think the operative word there, though,
00:49:04is temporary.
00:49:05Why is it only temporary?
00:49:06Are they saying if you don't win the World Championship
00:49:08next year, it goes back to the old name, or what?
00:49:10That's what I thought when I saw it.
00:49:11Temporary?
00:49:13It's kind of...
00:49:15Backhanded?
00:49:16Yeah.
00:49:18I guess maybe Peter's right, though.
00:49:20It's incentive.
00:49:21If he wins the World Championship,
00:49:22they'll call it Sebastian Vettel High School for good.
00:49:25As they should.
00:49:29The big bulbous-looking building
00:49:31outlined in lights is the Esplanade,
00:49:33an exhibition center.
00:49:38A lot of people,
00:49:39all ten of the drivers are out on track at the moment,
00:49:41and they all keep setting
00:49:42individual fastest sectors on this session.
00:49:45A lot of green on the timing charts.
00:49:47A lot of mode a minute ago.
00:49:49Give me your icon,
00:49:50the people.
00:49:52More purple.
00:49:53Purple.
00:49:55Purple people, either.
00:49:59Popping peas.
00:50:01Thus far,
00:50:02the first-ever Formula One weekend
00:50:04under the lights has been
00:50:06a huge success.
00:50:07Bernie Ecclestone told the press yesterday
00:50:09his next task will be...
00:50:11Whoa!
00:50:13Gimme!
00:50:16Yeah, there's that green badge,
00:50:17couldn't tell you.
00:50:19To finish my point,
00:50:20Bernie Ecclestone now wants the Japanese Grand Prix
00:50:23to be held under the lights,
00:50:25no doubt with Shanghai
00:50:26and the Chinese event to follow.
00:50:27Whoa!
00:50:28Jeepers!
00:50:29Oh, come on, David,
00:50:30we're getting used to it by now, aren't we?
00:50:31Well, that was closest we've seen yet.
00:50:34To tell you,
00:50:35Massa, Hamilton,
00:50:36P1 with a 45.6.
00:50:38Massa has set it fastest first and middle sector.
00:50:43And he's now just set the fastest time.
00:50:45Massa to P1 with a 45.4.
00:50:48Just slightly slow.
00:50:50He didn't get the personal best in sector three
00:50:52by an absolute hair.
00:50:53It's 36.2 to 36.2,
00:50:55but Hamilton's time is purple.
00:50:57But our time in the scoring
00:50:58doesn't go beyond the 10th.
00:51:00Yeah, you're right, David,
00:51:01that paint is slippery,
00:51:02just ask the Iceman.
00:51:03And dusty.
00:51:05Which also is slippery.
00:51:08There's the on-board.
00:51:10Yeah, buddy!
00:51:14Yeah, had it all the time,
00:51:15not a problem.
00:51:17My time of day.
00:51:22Heidfeld up to fifth with 46.6.
00:51:24One would think
00:51:25they would all be fairly light on fuel
00:51:27for maximum speed,
00:51:28given how important qualifying
00:51:30is likely to be in this race.
00:51:32Kovalainen only 10th.
00:51:34He's on the super soft.
00:51:35Is he really heavy on fuel?
00:51:38He's heavy on fuel,
00:51:39but we've seen how relatively poor
00:51:42the performance of the McLaren is
00:51:43on those super softs.
00:51:44I mean, Hamilton didn't have a bad lap.
00:51:47He wasn't bulked by traffic in Q2.
00:51:49And he only just made it in,
00:51:51he was 10th.
00:51:52Super soft Sunday.
00:51:53Yeah, Nick Heidfeld's tires.
00:51:56Let's get down to
00:51:57one of the drivers knocked out,
00:51:58David Koolgaard of Red Bull,
00:51:59with Peter Windsor.
00:52:02David, hydraulic problem this morning,
00:52:04which couldn't have helped.
00:52:05Tell us about the car
00:52:06in qualifying Q2.
00:52:08Yeah, a track like this,
00:52:09you obviously need miles
00:52:10to get your hand in,
00:52:11even if you've,
00:52:12as long in the tooth
00:52:13as you and I, Peter,
00:52:14but I just was making up
00:52:16a little bit during qualifying
00:52:18and trying to guess, right,
00:52:19that's what, you know,
00:52:20that's where the car
00:52:21should be able to go.
00:52:22I didn't do those lap times
00:52:23in the morning,
00:52:24and I pay the price for it.
00:52:25I think that if I drove
00:52:26a tidy lap,
00:52:27there's a few attempts,
00:52:28but nowhere near
00:52:29I've been able to get
00:52:30to where Vettel is
00:52:31with the same car.
00:52:32What was your thinking
00:52:33going into qualifying
00:52:34in terms of the prime
00:52:35versus the option?
00:52:36I went in believing
00:52:37the prime was quicker,
00:52:38because that's what
00:52:39we found yesterday.
00:52:40And then quickly changed
00:52:41from main to the option,
00:52:42because I did
00:52:43option, prime,
00:52:44and then the prime
00:52:45was nowhere,
00:52:46so I went back to the option.
00:52:47OK, thanks, David.
00:52:48Bad luck.
00:52:49Good luck tomorrow.
00:52:50Interesting comment
00:52:51from David Goulthard
00:52:52that he just can't do
00:52:53with the car
00:52:54what Toro Rosso
00:52:55and Vettel are doing.
00:52:56Everybody in for new tires,
00:52:57and while we were
00:52:58listening to DC,
00:52:59you saw that they played
00:53:00a radio transmission
00:53:01from Lewis Hamilton.
00:53:02Let's listen to that.
00:53:05OK, Lewis,
00:53:06currently P2,
00:53:07Massa P1,
00:53:08time losses,
00:53:09first and second sectors,
00:53:10a tenth each sector.
00:53:12Your third sector is good.
00:53:16Well, the third sector
00:53:17starts after you've
00:53:18gone over the Anderson Bridge
00:53:19and turned
00:53:20right
00:53:21down the Esplanade Drive
00:53:22just before
00:53:23Raffles Avenue.
00:53:25Yeah, between turns
00:53:2613 and 14.
00:53:27Yeah, so the first
00:53:28and second sector
00:53:29is where he's losing
00:53:30that little bit of time.
00:53:31Here's Vettel,
00:53:32about to cross
00:53:33the Anderson Bridge.
00:53:34He's in sector two
00:53:35right now.
00:53:37Meanwhile,
00:53:38for the line in,
00:53:39he's on the primes.
00:53:40Hamilton, I thought,
00:53:41was on the options,
00:53:43and that Ferrari,
00:53:44was it Massa,
00:53:45went out on the primes?
00:53:46Yeah, I think
00:53:47Hamilton did too.
00:53:48Here's Massa.
00:53:51Less than two and a half
00:53:52minutes to go.
00:53:53Two laps max.
00:54:13Yeah, you don't get
00:54:14two laps with him,
00:54:15because he's still
00:54:16on the gun
00:54:17at the moment.
00:54:24The way Felipe Massa
00:54:25qualifies,
00:54:26he won't need
00:54:27two laps now.
00:54:28Certainly has turned
00:54:29into being an
00:54:30absolutely astounding
00:54:31qualifier this year
00:54:32on pole,
00:54:33both at Monaco and Valencia,
00:54:34the other street circuit.
00:54:35Yeah, he's very good
00:54:36on the street.
00:54:37Quickest in qualifying,
00:54:38i.e. overall,
00:54:39for the seventh time
00:54:40in the last 17 races.
00:54:41Here comes the
00:54:42Iceman,
00:54:43racking in to start
00:54:44the only hot lap
00:54:45he will get.
00:54:46Oh, and that
00:54:47won't help.
00:54:48No.
00:54:49Oh, he lost all that
00:54:50momentum.
00:54:51Won't help him there,
00:54:52but...
00:54:54He's still got time
00:54:55to regain.
00:54:56The viewers who
00:54:57are not quite up to date,
00:54:58don't forget these cars
00:54:59don't have traction
00:55:00control these days
00:55:01on the back.
00:55:02You're seeing a lot more
00:55:03tail-end happy cars
00:55:04this year,
00:55:05which has been great for us.
00:55:06Of the last five
00:55:07new circuits
00:55:08on the Formula 1 calendar,
00:55:09Ferrari have won
00:55:10the inaugural race
00:55:11on four of those occasions,
00:55:12including
00:55:13Felipe Massa's victory
00:55:14on the street circuit
00:55:15of Valencia, Spain,
00:55:16earlier this year.
00:55:17Interesting,
00:55:18that little graphic
00:55:19we saw there,
00:55:20to give car position
00:55:21on track.
00:55:22So,
00:55:23the running order now
00:55:24as they are on track
00:55:25is Kimi,
00:55:26Hamilton,
00:55:27Massa,
00:55:28Kovalainen.
00:55:29The track's getting
00:55:30better and better.
00:55:31It's typically
00:55:32the last car running
00:55:33that should have
00:55:34maximum grip,
00:55:35best track position.
00:55:36You would expect that
00:55:37to go to Kovalainen.
00:55:38Yeah, he bored with
00:55:39Hamilton.
00:55:40Here comes the bridge.
00:55:41Passing over those
00:55:42Turn 10 kerbs.
00:55:43Might be so easy
00:55:44to get sideways there
00:55:45on the approach
00:55:46to the bridge
00:55:47as the track narrows up.
00:55:48Massa purple
00:55:49in sector 1,
00:55:5028.2,
00:55:51as opposed to Hamilton's
00:55:5228.4.
00:55:54Oh, wow.
00:55:59Hamilton off the base
00:56:00of Massa.
00:56:03Last 15 seconds
00:56:04of the session.
00:56:06There's Kimi
00:56:07under the grandstand.
00:56:09Kimi's probably got
00:56:10quite a bit of fuel.
00:56:11Oh, he's not going to get
00:56:12another lap.
00:56:14All right, boys,
00:56:15this is it.
00:56:16Let's have a look
00:56:17at the last time
00:56:18to shoot out for pole.
00:56:19RÀikkönen will be
00:56:20first to set
00:56:21his ultimate time.
00:56:22Second with a 45.6.
00:56:26Massa fastest
00:56:27in sectors 1 and 2.
00:56:29RÀikkönen was fastest
00:56:30in sector 3.
00:56:31Here comes Hamilton
00:56:32to pole with a 45.4.
00:56:36But Massa's been quicker
00:56:37on both first sectors
00:56:38than Hamilton.
00:56:39Yeah, this is the end.
00:56:40Interesting,
00:56:41Massa's not always
00:56:42the quickest.
00:56:43In fact, rarely
00:56:44the quickest guy in practice.
00:56:45But boy, oh boy,
00:56:46in qualifying,
00:56:47he just drops the visor
00:56:48and goes.
00:56:49This is it.
00:56:50Can he make it?
00:56:52It's going to be close.
00:56:53Yeah.
00:56:54Massa.
00:56:55With a 44.86 tenths.
00:56:57Wow.
00:56:58Fastest in sectors
00:56:591, 2, and 3.
00:57:01Kubica into 4th.
00:57:03Yes.
00:57:04Felipe Massa's dad
00:57:05should be getting
00:57:06used to that by now.
00:57:07A little tail happy
00:57:08in the BMW Sauber
00:57:09is Heidfeld.
00:57:11Kovalainen still
00:57:12could be heard from.
00:57:16A little wiggle.
00:57:21Kovalainen's going to
00:57:22go.
00:57:23Heidfeld's going to beat
00:57:24Kovalainen, I'm sure.
00:57:265th.
00:57:275th.
00:57:28Now he comes in
00:57:29just behind him.
00:57:30Here comes Kovalainen.
00:57:31Here's Kovalainen.
00:57:32Last corner.
00:57:345th.
00:57:355th.
00:57:36Last corner.
00:57:38How far will he go up?
00:57:40To 5th, bumping
00:57:41Heidfeld.
00:57:43So Massa
00:57:44has the pole
00:57:46on a track
00:57:47where he most needed it.
00:57:49Boy, he does because
00:57:50this is going to be a
00:57:51very, very, very
00:57:52difficult circuit
00:57:53to overtake on
00:57:54in the race tomorrow.
00:57:55Six men still
00:57:56mathematically alive
00:57:57for the championship.
00:58:00The top two
00:58:01separated by one point.
00:58:02Hamilton and Massa,
00:58:03they will start
00:58:042-1 on the grid.
00:58:05Behind them,
00:58:06Raikkonen, Kubica,
00:58:07Kovalainen and Heidfeld.
00:58:08The other four men
00:58:09still mathematically alive
00:58:11are all in the
00:58:12top six positions
00:58:13on the grid.
00:58:21Done it, mate.
00:58:22Done it. Brilliant.
00:58:23Absolutely fantastic.
00:58:25Yeah.
00:58:26Brilliant.
00:58:2744.8, you.
00:58:29Hamilton is behind you
00:58:30on 45.
00:58:3345.6.
00:58:34I think that was
00:58:35an absolutely stunning lap,
00:58:36Felipe.
00:58:40What else can I say?
00:58:42Now the question is
00:58:43how much fuel
00:58:44is on board the Ferrari?
00:58:45A huge gap
00:58:46to Hamilton
00:58:47in second place.
00:58:49Have Ferrari
00:58:50perhaps miscalculated
00:58:51a bit on fuel?
00:58:52Or was Felipe
00:58:53just that much faster
00:58:54than everybody else?
00:58:56We'll know
00:58:57when the race unfolds
00:58:58on Sunday.
00:58:59We'll take a break now
00:59:00and return
00:59:01with more from Qualify.
00:59:05Welcome back
00:59:06to Singapore.
00:59:07While we were in break,
00:59:08we were reviewing
00:59:09Felipe Massa's pole lap
00:59:10in his Ferrari
00:59:11and it is
00:59:12breathtaking stuff.
00:59:13Let's hear from him now
00:59:14with Peter Windsor.
00:59:18Very warm congratulations
00:59:19to the fastest
00:59:20three qualifiers
00:59:21for the Singtel
00:59:22Singapore Grand Prix.
00:59:24Third quickest
00:59:25for Scuderia Ferrari
00:59:26Marlboro,
00:59:27Kimi RÀikkönen.
00:59:28Second fastest
00:59:29for Vodafone
00:59:30in the world
00:59:31in the top five.
00:59:32Second fastest
00:59:33for Vodafone
00:59:34McLaren Mercedes
00:59:35Lewis Hamilton.
00:59:36On the pole
00:59:37for the fifth time this year
00:59:38and making it a hat-trick
00:59:39on the street circuit
00:59:40in 2008
00:59:41for Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro
00:59:42Felipe Massa.
00:59:43Felipe,
00:59:44Monaco,
00:59:45Valencia,
00:59:46but here
00:59:47the inaugural night race
00:59:48at Singapore.
00:59:49What an achievement for you.
00:59:51I think it was
00:59:52first of all
00:59:53the car was just perfect.
00:59:55So nice to drive
00:59:57smoothly.
01:00:00And then I
01:00:01managed to do
01:00:02a perfect lap.
01:00:03So that
01:00:04always helps
01:00:05when you have a good car.
01:00:07Don't make any
01:00:08single mistakes
01:00:09in whatever corner you go.
01:00:10So that's
01:00:11always a great achievement.
01:00:13What does it feel like
01:00:14to put in
01:00:15as you described
01:00:16a perfect lap
01:00:17at a venue like this?
01:00:18The first ever
01:00:19night race in the history
01:00:20of Formula One.
01:00:22It's just a great feeling.
01:00:23When you come into
01:00:24the last corner
01:00:25you say I cannot make
01:00:26any mistake.
01:00:27I'm already
01:00:29not trying to
01:00:30go in the limit
01:00:31in the last corner
01:00:32because you know
01:00:33everything can be
01:00:36worse than it
01:00:37actually is.
01:00:40So I just make
01:00:41corner by corner
01:00:42perfect.
01:00:43Not making any
01:00:44single mistake.
01:00:45And then when I came
01:00:46to the last corner
01:00:47I said maybe I take it
01:00:48easy a little bit
01:00:49but I couldn't.
01:00:50So I did
01:00:51quick anyway
01:00:52the last corner.
01:00:53And then the feeling
01:00:54is so fantastic.
01:00:55When you can
01:00:56take it away
01:00:57the best of the car
01:00:58is that
01:01:00it's one of the
01:01:01most incredible
01:01:02feeling you can feel
01:01:04as a racing driver.
01:01:06So I think
01:01:07all of us
01:01:09when you achieve
01:01:10what you want
01:01:11it's always a
01:01:12great achievement.
01:01:13And your thoughts
01:01:14on this track
01:01:15and driving at night?
01:01:16It's pretty tough.
01:01:17It's a very difficult
01:01:18track.
01:01:19To get every
01:01:20corner right
01:01:21is really
01:01:22really difficult.
01:01:25And the lights
01:01:26I mean the visibility
01:01:27I don't think
01:01:28it's a big problem
01:01:29to be honest.
01:01:30I mean
01:01:31we have visibility
01:01:32so you don't care.
01:01:33I mean we just
01:01:34want to take the best
01:01:35out of the car
01:01:36so you don't really
01:01:37think about that
01:01:38during the night
01:01:39or during the day.
01:01:40You just think about
01:01:41what you have to do.
01:01:42And
01:01:43it will be a very
01:01:44difficult race
01:01:45for sure.
01:01:46You know
01:01:47concentration will be
01:01:48ten times more
01:01:49important than
01:01:50whatever
01:01:51normal circuit.
01:01:54Even maybe
01:01:55a little bit more
01:01:56difficult than Monaco
01:01:57because there's
01:01:58much more corners
01:01:59so
01:02:00it won't be easy.
01:02:01And how's the rhythm
01:02:02of the weekend
01:02:03worked out for you?
01:02:04For you and the team
01:02:05very different time zone
01:02:06of course
01:02:07but equally
01:02:08very late race start.
01:02:09Yeah, yeah, sure.
01:02:10I mean
01:02:11I think the
01:02:12the work on the team
01:02:13in a way
01:02:14was exactly similar
01:02:15as the other races
01:02:16but in completely
01:02:17different times.
01:02:18You know
01:02:19so I'm
01:02:20already
01:02:21I got here
01:02:22on Tuesday
01:02:23and I tried to
01:02:24go to bed
01:02:25very late
01:02:26and on Wednesday
01:02:27three o'clock in the morning
01:02:28I was walking on the track
01:02:29just to learn
01:02:30you know
01:02:31with
01:02:32my family
01:02:33with Rubens
01:02:34Barrichello
01:02:35and his wife
01:02:36and everybody
01:02:37so I was having fun
01:02:38but also
01:02:39learning the track.
01:02:40And then
01:02:41also
01:02:42every day
01:02:43I mean
01:02:44I was trying to do
01:02:45similar things
01:02:46I think everybody
01:02:47in the team as well
01:02:48you know
01:02:49trying to use
01:02:50more the European time
01:02:51than to use
01:02:52actually time from here
01:02:53so
01:02:54it's a little bit strange
01:02:56Congratulations to you.
01:02:57Luisa
01:02:58what
01:02:59after what happened at Monza
01:03:00we were all a bit worried
01:03:01in Q2
01:03:02you were out on the super softs there
01:03:03and just made it through to Q3.
01:03:05Yeah
01:03:07well
01:03:08you know
01:03:09the only one I was worried
01:03:10I was
01:03:12it was a little bit nerve wracking
01:03:13for sure
01:03:14but fortunately
01:03:15we got through
01:03:16and
01:03:17managed to
01:03:18still secure
01:03:19a good spot
01:03:20on the front row
01:03:21but
01:03:22obviously not as
01:03:23smooth sailing
01:03:24as most people
01:03:25but
01:03:26nonetheless
01:03:27we've been very competitive
01:03:28all weekend
01:03:29and so
01:03:30I think we're in a good position
01:03:31for the rest of tomorrow.
01:03:32We heard
01:03:33radio transmission
01:03:34saying that
01:03:35great sector 3
01:03:36sectors 1 and 2
01:03:37were the ones you had to try
01:03:38and find the speed
01:03:39on that last run.
01:03:40Yes
01:03:41I remember
01:03:42that
01:03:43the first half I did
01:03:44wasn't particularly
01:03:45fantastic
01:03:46and
01:03:47the last sector was good
01:03:48but
01:03:49the first two
01:03:50you know
01:03:51I've been a little bit cautious
01:03:52and
01:03:53the first time
01:03:54I attempted
01:03:55I think I improved
01:03:56the first couple of corners
01:03:57but then I lost a bit of time
01:03:58through
01:03:59I think it was turn 5
01:04:00and
01:04:01then
01:04:02the rest of the lap
01:04:03was pretty much
01:04:04the same
01:04:05pace
01:04:06as
01:04:07the previous
01:04:08my best time
01:04:09so
01:04:10I think I may have
01:04:11improved it
01:04:12slightly
01:04:13but
01:04:14it wasn't enough.
01:04:15We saw the hard
01:04:16Bridgestone tyre
01:04:17looking very good
01:04:18in Q3
01:04:19what was the
01:04:20thinking going into
01:04:21qualifying
01:04:22well
01:04:23it was actually
01:04:24quite a
01:04:25tricky
01:04:26decision to make
01:04:27simply because
01:04:28normally there's
01:04:29a relatively big
01:04:30difference between
01:04:31the two
01:04:32compounds
01:04:33or a noticeable
01:04:34difference
01:04:35and today
01:04:36was
01:04:37generally
01:04:38both tyres
01:04:39are very similar
01:04:40just that the
01:04:41option tyre
01:04:42doesn't seem to be
01:04:43lasting
01:04:44the whole lap
01:04:45so then
01:04:46fortunately
01:04:47I think everyone
01:04:48pretty much went
01:04:49for the
01:04:50harder tyre
01:04:51and
01:04:52I think
01:04:53it was
01:04:54a good
01:04:55decision
01:04:56to make
01:04:57and
01:04:58I think
01:04:59it was
01:05:00a good
01:05:01decision
01:05:02to make
01:05:03and
01:05:04I think
01:05:05it was

01:05:17it was
